Donnie and Rick react to Abbotsford’s Calder Cup victory

In our opening segment Donnie and Rick react to the Abbotsford Canucks Calder Cup win last night.

  1. All the credit for the Calder cup goes to Manny Malhotra, Ryan Johnson and the players. The management in the Vancouver office doesn't deserve any. In fact, they should be held accountable for what happened last year.

  2. It's also an impressive win considering how few first round picks the Vancouver Canucks have had in the last decade of drafts. Abbotsford had to win this cup with the equivalent of several checking lines.

  3. People hate me for saying it but Silovs is an outstanding AHL goalie, I dont see it translating to the NHL. Much like bains, dominates in the A but when called, up really struggles. He's out of position a lot and is small in net. Silovs benefits from a more hectic game while someone like Demko really strives in the structured play of the NHL. Willing to be proven wrong of course.

  4. I really wish more of the media was covering the AHL playoffs.
None of the major groups gave a damn about it.
Sportsnet barely referenced it at all, TSN had virtually nothing about it.
The entire fanbase had to follow through flosports. So big thanks to Flo, and…. I expect more and better from the big companies

  5. While I love Malhotra I agree that Ryan Johnson is an absolute gem. He’s been the most constituent builder for this franchise. I think he’s the next in line to move up when Rutherford leaves.

  6. Why are these guys so blinded by homer recency bias? So blinded… Hilarious they keep worrying about Manny getting poached after 1 year and 1 championship. Todd Nelson has won 5 Calder cups and never been an NHL HEAD Coach. I've been a Manny fan from when he was a Canuck player, and thought he was a great Asst. Coach with Van. Super impressed with him in Abby, and I wanted to see him get a chance to coach on the big team again. I also think he'll get consideration, but I don't think he's really, really a threat to be hired as an NHL head coach this summer. I do agree they need to give their prospects a chance, but with this ownership group it'll never happen. The media also is terrible with rolling out "hot takes" and stories, and talk supporting signing free agents, trading picks and prospects… Year after year…. I have yet to hear a talk show, or podcast come out and say "Don't make a trade, don't sign a UFA, but give some spots to your prospects…" Always, guys gotta earn a spot… Seriously look at all the guy's FLA got for nothing because teams gave up on their prospects for UFA, big name trades… Guys we want back… Chatfield, Forsling, Gadjovich, McCann, Peca, S.Walker just to name a few. Guys who were never given a chance to play in roles they were drafted for, but were forced to change into 4th liners to stay in the NHL, but then thrived after given a chance to shine.

  7. After the soul crushing disaster that was the Vancouver Canucks' last season, the fans really needed a feel good story for a change. Sasson and Raty would be an improvement on what they have at centre for the first, two lines. Petey needs to go back to being a winger.

  8. Bains has NHL hands and IQ, Karlsson has NHL grit and toughness and Sasson has NHL speed. They’d be a great 4th line next season.

  9. I am thrilled for this Canucks win, and very happy for the team's management, coaches, and players… But in terms of how a Calder Cup win would translate into future success for the Vancouver Canucks, I am hesitant to say "the future looks bright." Many of Abby's players have already had stints with the big club, but when you go down the list – Bains, PDG, Blais, Klimovich, Lekkerimaki, Karlsson, Mueller, Raty and Sasson at forward, Woo, Hirose, Mynio, McWard, Brisebois, Kudryavtsev, Wolanin, Mancini on D, and of course, Silovs in goal, how many of these players can we actually expect to develop into regular NHLers, much less top-end NHLers? To me, only Lekkerimaki and Raty on forward, and Mancini on D and Silovs in goal, seem to have the ceiling to become top six forward, top four D, or a 1B in goal; the rest are likely going to be role players if they can craft out a NHL career… The Vancouver Canucks' aspiration to win a Stanley Cup still requires top-notch talent, and sadly, the Abby Canucks likely would not be the pipeline that feeds that.

  10. Honestly, Canucks should just bite the bullet and build around the players coming up in the farm. There's just too many holes in the top 6 to fill atm to be a serious contender. Pull the ripcord on Hughes and EP40 before July 1 and get some more high end 20-22 year olds to compliment these Abby boys.

EP40 is questionable, Hughes may not stay, and Canucks are still saddled with OEL's 4.7M cap buyout for the next two years. How the heck can you seriously compete with a missing $5M in cap space?

It'll mean losing the next 3 years, but the Canucks will have a golden generation down the road and be a constant playoff team afterwards.

  11. I am completely thrilled Abby won the Calder, Donnie and Dhali are absolutely correct, Karlsson Sasson n Mancini should be on Canucks next year, they earned it and deserve to be on the 4th line, Mancini on our D

  12. Karlsson, Blais, Mancini, Ratty, Klimovich, Bains and Silov to crack Canucks line up this year .. that’s quite a lot of EL contract here.

  13. forget about Bains, Sasson and Karlsson as a third line for vancouver. straight swap for the first line is what id like to see

  14. As long as Alvin & Rutherford don’t trade them off !! Manny, Manny, Manny deserves his Manny, manny, Manny!

  15. Sasson, Lekeremaki, Karlsson, Mancini, Silovs will be your main bodies with some NHL time next season. Don't forget about Raty

  16. Finally, at long last, the Canucks name is on the right side of hockey history.

Every Canucks team that has had Johnny Canuck as a primary logo and as a primary sweater crest has won a championship. 6 PCHL/WHL championships and 1 Calder Cup. NHL
Vancouver Canucks -> never had Johnny Canuck as a primary crest nor as a primary secondary logo -> ZERO Stanley Cups. Time to promote Johnny from Abby back home to Van City.
