Sit down with Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff

Well, as the Buffalo Sabres continue with their 2025 development camp, we are checking in with head coach and former Ammer Lindy Ruff. It is great to talk to you, Lindy. And I guess we’ll start with where we are right now. The dev camp is in the present. The players probably more geared toward the future of the franchise, but how important is this for these young players?
Oh, very important. They get their first a lot of them get their first taste of Buffalo. Um, I think we do a real good job of, you know, where we take them, you know, getting the building, get a little bit familiar with the city and what’s around here, but it’s a big first step. Um, they get to see, uh, obviously where we practice, where we play, and they get to see some sites around town, too.
There’s so many Sabres that at one point in their career are Ammers. That’s something you did as well playing for the team back in ’91, ’92. I’ll just talk about the AHL. How important are the minor leagues to the development of these athletes?
Well, you know, I think almost every good team now has, you know, a backbone of guys that have come from their system. And when you look at the Rochester and the proximity to Buffalo, what a great setup. Uh, you know, you can get down there to to see players players can easily get uh back to Buffalo or go back and forth. So, when you’re looking at a franchise and and their supporting team being that close, it’s an ideal situation. You mentioned the Amirs and we talked about Rochester again. You once wore the red, white, and blue. What do you remember from your season as an Amir?
We had a heck of a season. Uh, you know, we lost um I think it was in the semis um to Detroit uh but had a great great year. You know, won a playoff series. Um I remember, you know, first going down getting on the bus and riding to, you know, a bunch of the places. Uh but just to witness you know I went down there after my career in the NHL so but just to witness uh the young guys journey um you know and some for some guys it was hard for some guys you know I think it’s easier but uh it’s a great place to play the the fans were awesome uh you know I I still remember you know down the stretch getting in the playoffs and then playing in the the playoff battles and the atmosphere in the building was tremendous. So many great names that have wore the red, white, and blue of the Rochester Americans. Getting the opportunity to talk with one right here, Lindy Ruff. Thank you so much for your time.

Andrew Mossbrooks sat down with Buffalo Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff before the 2025 Development Camp Scrimmage to talk about the expectations of the new draft picks and the returnees at camp, along with how pivotal developing in the AHL is with Rochester as he shares his memories.

  1. Wow this really seemed to peak the interest of Buffalo fans. 2 comments. I think that speaks for itself good luck with that clown again

  2. When I was a kid, I would hang out after the games by the locker rooms at the Aud to get autographs. The "star" Sabre players, who remain nameless, never appeared. I found out later in life from someone that worked at the Aud that those players slipped out the back door after every game. Most other Sabre players met with fans and willingly signed autographs, and Lindy was always one of them. I remember him conversing with fans too. Lindy taught me a valuable lesson about how to treat people and so did the "star" players that avoided the fans. 🙌 🏒🦬
