Hope we can keep Sammy
So we have a bit of a dilemma. With where our cap will be, even if Tkachuk starts the season IR, we’ll have to unload other contracts to bring him back. If we werent in this position i’d say give him as many years as possible at 4-5 mil. Overpay now but not later, plus we dont have to worry about offer sheets until down the line.
But thats not the reality here. We have to give him a low number, and since he is young, he wont want term on a 1.5 mil contract. The issue then becomes if he only gets 1-2 years, he will definitely get offer sheeted once eligible. He is our Halloway in 1-2 years.
He wasnt eligible for an offersheet coming off if his ELC this year, but if he was, given that teams dont want to lose out on a shot at McKenna he wouldnt have been offered anyways. I dont think we will be seeing the same RFA environment in two years.
I do think we are committed to keeping Mackie. Him and Lundy represent the future beyond 2030, but the next five years come first. We cant give him a fair deal without having to move contracts.
Petry is going to thrive here. Cats system is just built to bring out the best in every guy. Petry has a great shot from the blue line and can move the puck. He will do well here.
Mistake was keeping Marchand, this will come back and bite us.
I'm excited to see what Mackie can do with the Panthers. I wonder though, why did he get benched in the playoffs? Was it simply a matter of he wasn't ready, and in future years he'll be able to fill in? Excuse my ignorance on the subject lol
