How important is it for Leafs to look like they won Tavares deal?

Bryan Hayes joins SC with Jay Onrait for another edition of Harvey’s Hot Takes, where he gives his thoughts on how important it is for the Maple Leafs to look like they’ve won the John Tavares deal, all signs pointing to Mitch Marner heading to market on July 1st, and how much he believes it’s mainly a buyer’s market.

  1. Treliving is a joke not having any of the leafs rfa's or ufa's signed by now is financial suicide and he's been unable to trade marners rights sure throwing money at free agents is a way to change their dna but it can also destroy team chemistry taveres at 4x5mil , knies at 5×7.5 mil

  2. Toronto is going to struggle next year when Marner leaves, John Tavares needs to be signed since he’s still a good player but at a good price. Unfortunately Matthews will not be as good next year without Marner so if they also lose Tavares and Marner then next year will be a write off.

  3. Sens and Montreal getting better next year and the Leafs are going to go backwards… hopefully not all the way out of the playoffs.
Potentially losing Marner Tavares and Matthews stuck with a chronic injury that never lets him get back to his contract signing level

  4. Locking up Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, William Nylander and Morgan Rielly to contracts most of whose seasons had been structured to have contained full no-move clauses, is partly why the Leafs find themselves where they are: not being able to easily trade any of those players, and possibly this coming season ending up being a write-off on playoff qualification.

  5. Bryan Hayes Is the NOISE not the fans and he keeps blaming the fans and not taking responsibility for the SPIN he's personally responsible for. Bryan apologize or Quit because many fans blame YOU for needless rumors!!

  6. Lol what is this? A pitch to marner and Tavares to stay in TO? media getting paid by the team or something😂 what a joke

  7. Treliving should rethink his statement that Matthews will automatically make more money on his next contract. One should say that Matthews has not earned his current contract. It could be that Matthews will be on a different team and earn more money. This would make more sense at this point.

  8. Let him walk he's a career loser change the loser DNA, the leafs were headed in the right direction until the sign 91

  9. Its a business and if he doesn't fit into the model Toronto values him at for the present and the duration of the contract then he is free to get his money elsewhere. There is no owe anyone anything here and no I win you lose mentality. What are you going to say of Detroit offer sheets Knies for 10 million, you gonna match or take the picks. I'd take the picks, you need them more.

  10. I’m so sick and tired of hearing about leafs contracts – media constantly amplifying doesn’t help

  11. Take a look at what treliving did to the Flames when he was there. The players he got rid of. He’s a joke of a GM and we’re all about to witness it within the next couple of seasons.

  12. The leafs definitely won last contract with Nylander when he was making less than 7 million

  13. Hilarious listening to Hayes talk as if practically every star player that has left Toronto, hasn't won the cup elsewhere after doing so.

Marner is going to be just fine outside of Toronto, and Toronto will continue to circle the drain as Matthews gets older, and Nylander gets softer.

  14. Tavares was massively overpaid the last few years. He should accept a team friendly contract and not a contract based on what he can get on the market. But with JT’s tax problems, he’s likely gonna test the market.

  15. John Tavares probably left $2 million/year plus on the table this year but guaranteed himself a blank check in endorsements in Toronto until the day he dies.

  16. Brad definitely did a great job with Johnny's new contract. Love the term and love the 4.38 aav cant wait to see what happens in the new couple weeks…
