Habs Acquire STUD Defenceman Noah Dobson for BOTH 1st Round Picks & Heineman
Montreal Canadiens trade their 16th and 17th overall picks & Emil Heineman for defenceman Noah Dobson before the first round in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Who is filling Heinemann's spot? WIth all the fuss about Dobson, maybe I missed it but no one is talking about the 4th line. I'm just curious. Oh yeah, and a beleated Happy Jean!
I'm honestly very worried about his fit on the team and contract. He's apparently a very frustrating defenseman from my conversations with Islanders fans, who can play good defense but only some of the time. Essentially a better version of Mike Matheson or worse version of Evan Bouchard. I hope he adjusts better to the Montreal system cause we're stuck with him for the long term
Seems like HuGo made a huge 'home run swing' gamble on draft day again. Unfortunately the first two have kind of…well…stunk! And sorry, but I'd much rather have 2 first-rounders, Heineman, and Kovasevic than Noah Dobson and a fourth.
Isles fans have got to be ecstatic to get Eklund and Aitcheson @ 16 & 17 – If I knew these guys would be available I might not make this deal. Go Habs!
Full credit to the duo of Hughes & Gorton for pulling off that deal. I really didn't think the Habs were going to be able to pull off ANY deal of significance as there were many teams looking to buy, and few willing to sell, and I just figured another team would have a more enticing offer for players like Dobson or any of the other high end available players…and HuGo proved me wrong. I'm truly baffled at why Darche & the NYI made this trade with the Habs without getting Reinbacher or receiving a better package? If the rumours were true, the only other team trying to get Dobson was the Blue Jackets who had picks #14 & #20…so I wonder if they truly preferred Mtl's offer or if they tried to be fair to Dobson who supposedly wanted to come to Mtl. Wonder if we'll get any insight when the Mtl Canadiens release their usual Draft 2025 vlog. Anyways, a solid addition..and by the looks of how the draft went down, the Habs could of technically selected D Kashawn Aitcheson & RW Justin Carbonneau @ #16&17…but they would not have made the NHL roster for at least 3,4yrs…so time will tell…but as far as the Mtl timeline goes…Dobson fit's in perfectly. It will be interesting to see who MSL & Robidas pair up? Will Dobson play with Hutson? Or Guhle? There are obviously more possible trades to come or UFA additions so it will be exciting to see what else HuGo have up their sleeves. Note that no media seemed to ask Hughes what his plans were considering the Habs are now OVER the cap (~ $4mil) with the Dobson contract? Also, Hughes still seems to want to add a top6 forward and some extra pieces…not sure how he plans to do that being already $4mil over? Is it bye bye Carey in Sept (after his bonus is payed), is Matheson, Gally, Anderson, being shopped around? I guess we shall see what happens in the next few days. Best wishes to Noah and his bride to be on Monday! Thank you Emil Heineman, and best of luck in NY! Go Habs Go!
Drew each good move, decision and idea that proves great takes away many of the bad moves and memories of the 1995 through 2001 habs yrs. Back when many dark days of the habs were happening after the 93 cup team was ripped apart, as well as the farm system. Thnx drew!!! Welcome pei native Noah Dobson. As a maritime this is awesome!!! Thnx Emil best of luck to you, we habs fans enjoyed your efforts and shot.
I'm not super familiar with Dobson because I didn't really go out of my way to watch NYI games but you can't deny he's a solid D. If Reinbacher's knees last next season, the Habs will have a solid D core no mater who plays between Reinbacher or Mailloux. They now have options on RD which they didn't have the last few seasons. They kept having to ask a LD to play on their off side. They lost Savard and picked up Dobson. This team just got instantly better. You know, Hage might have said he wants to play next season in Michigan but with spots opening up on the front end, if they can't find a solution for a 2C, I'm not against Hage playing next season in Montreal or Laval and fast tracking his progression. This team is about to get into their prime and if a 192lbs 19 year old Demidov can play next season in Montreal, I don't see the harm in playing a 190lbs 19 year old Hage too. But if I had to chose, I'd give Beck or Florian ice time in Montreal next season before Hage. They are both centers and it might be a good chance to see what they can do before trading for a 2C and or waiting for Hage.
Regardless of what this team does before training camp starts, I'd be happy if they started the season with the players already in the system. They didn't draft Farrell, Davidson, and everyone else I already named to not give them a chance. I know Farrell is small. I recognized that. I had also written him off at the beginning of last season after he scored 1 point in 12 games. BUT he came back strong and was their post productive players after Christmas. The kid figured it out and became a dominant player in Laval. If you don't trade him, give him a chance on the team.
This might be the most interesting camp in maybe 2 decades? Can you name a more talented team since Bergevin took over? If Dach has one healthy season, just one, they are stacked compared to what the Habs had when Hughes and Gorton took over. I know I'm going on and on but just imagine how Laine will be this season with a few months of resting his bad knee? Baring injuries, this team can and will make the playoffs again next season. They will at minimum play meaningful games all season. I can't wait for it! Go Habs Go!
Stud? Call him an offensive D man, ok, but stud? Drew clearly has been watching too much women's hockey if you think Dobson is a stud, you haven't see physical D men play the game. He is a good pickup, but Montreal is not built for playoff victories. The are a small and non physical team…you did watch the series vs Washington, right?
I'm an Islanders fan. Hopefully it's a deal that will benefit both sides. I'm happy with it from an Islanders perspective. Dobson is gifted on offense. But his defense is below average. I'm happy we saved the money and picked up some promising assets.
Getting a top pair D without giving ReinBacher Hage Fowler or Mailloux is not fair. the NHL is gonna come out with a new rule and Limit Hughes to 1 trade every 12 months lmfao
I am still on the fence with 8 times 9.5M. Would have preferred like 8.5/9M a year but still very happy with Dobson coming to MTL. When a guy spend 40K to make a fake ice in his backyard in order to practice to shoot 20k shot a summer to train, you can be sure that he’s more than welcome! Now where is our 2nd C?😅
A small thank you to Jake Evans for this. It may sound weird, but I think a lot of people around the league noticed when Jake was taken off the trade deadline want list and signed a team friendly deal. He proportionally took a big discount to stay and I’m sure amongst the players, many noticed and I am sure feelers were sent out. Dobson and Patrick Roy’s issues made him look elsewhere. People want to go where players believe in the system and that’s why I think we were appealing for Dobson to want to come here. Bravo to management for finally turning that mantra around!

Overpaid for him – mark my words. At least it wasn’t a Droon for Sergachev…
HUGE W
Montreal got ripped off!
Ok. Now that they have Dobson Please get rid of Matheson in a package for a center !
we gonna win the cups with those guy ( jeff / kent ) i would be surprise if not , every year they improve the team for long time
Big time steal for MTL
In my 40 years of life, and 40 years as a Habs fan I can honestly say this is the best Montreal team I have ever watched!
the islander's are the dumbest team in the league, they could of built the next Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith def dual for the next 15 y 🙃
Tell us Drew, is this a good trade??? Can i believe the hype??? Havent heard much about Dawson

Good acquisition, hate to see Heinamen go but gotta take that offer. We owe Mathieu Darche.
ole ole ole ole ole !
Can't wait to watch them in person in the fall.
Pei proud
I thought for suuuuure reinbacker or Mailloux was leaving! Its amazing
im struggling to understand if Dobson is really worth TWO first rounders and Heniman……………
Seems like HuGo made a huge 'home run swing' gamble on draft day again. Unfortunately the first two have kind of…well…stunk! And sorry, but I'd much rather have 2 first-rounders, Heineman, and Kovasevic than Noah Dobson and a fourth.
Dobson reminds me of Petry in his prime. Big, but not particularly physical, good offense, good skating.

Merci beaucoup
Carrier deserves his day in court, you get Xhekaj out of my cold, dead hands. Trade Mailloux while he’s valuable.
Same age as Captain Nick and contributes big minutes NOW for two picks and a prospect. GHG!

Xhekaj – Mailloux will eventually be the third pair. Engstrom and Struble are trade chips. Carrier and Matheson will walk as FAs.
Bon choix

Cap going up? Is not a deffininitive it's like gas prices hard to predict

Don't forget Xhekaj, he's not going anywhere.
Habs : "Sssssssssssombody Stop me!"
In Hughes we trust. I personally wouldn't buy a used car from Kent, without knowing my pocket is getting picked.
Getting a top pair D without giving ReinBacher Hage Fowler or Mailloux is not fair. the NHL is gonna come out with a new rule and Limit Hughes to 1 trade every 12 months lmfao
big deal for dummies
mailloux will never make NHL to expectation…….not even close…….. you are all hyping up something that hasnt happened yet
Matheson needs to go.
It will be great up coming season
I love trade
Heineman will be a 20 – 25 goal scorer for the Isles.
