Anaheim Ducks selected Roger McQueen No. 10 overall in the NHL Draft last Friday, and sent the 18-year-old from Saskatchewan on a whirlwind week. From a helicopter to Disneyland and a private dolphin cruise, to throwing out the first pitch at Angel Stadium and finally landing at the Ducks development camp this week.
The 6-foot-5 center–who has embraced the moment by choosing No. 95 as his jersey number to match the number of Lightning McQueen from Cars, which he took pictures with at Disneyland–has compared his game to fellow Saskatchewan native and Ducks legend Ryan Getzlaf.
McQueen will need to build up his lanky frame to continue his ascent from the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL to the NHL level and to strengthen his back, which suffered a lower spinal injury two seasons ago.
For now, McQueen is another key piece of the Ducks’ future build, alongside 2024 No. 3 overall pick Beckett Sennecke, who competed in drills directly against McQueen at this week’s camp and would possibly be teammates on the Canadian World Junior squad this winter.
