Let’s talk about building the Montreal Canadiens defence. Do they have too many of the same type or are they building something that will be the envy of the NHL. Join Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico as they break down the moves the Habs have made and look forward to the Canadiens finding another level

4 am drop 😂😂😂
Wasn't Ekbkad an offensive defenseman when he was drafted?
Mailloux ?? Wasn't he traded
Since Hughes became GM he only drafted a handful of players who are under six feet. You can see his vision.
I like the idea of keeping Matheson around to help with veteran presence on the back end. Habs D is looking scary good.
Im not concerned about vetren presence, I'm more concerned about the lack of toughness to clear the front of the net.
My acid kicked in when the more ice time for Mailloux chatter started.
something is telling me that we will rely on Mike Matheson once again…and I belive that we should keep him, he is very good if 'utilisé' properly, as Marco mentioned..
Ghule & Reinbacher the 2 tough guys prone to injury, not reassuring, Matheson as a 3rd pair doesn’t work, we can’t pay him 5M, defense is getting too expensive.
Matheson-Carrier will be a sick 3rd pair
Keep Matheson unless you can get a strong second line centerman. He's great because he loves playing in Montreal, he's a veteran that helps younger guys, his speed is elite so even when he "slows" down with age he's still competent, he's a fantastic back-up if an injury occurs, capable of playing lots of minutes and probably going to be more efficient with less ice time.
Trade for Anderson
* Please note that this video was recorded right before the Logan Mailloux trade**
I think MM8 has the capacity to be an effective defensive defenceman.
With the addition of Dobson, he will be able to focus more on the defensive aspects of his game. He showed the ability to be very effective in this role at times last year. If he can be relieved of some of his ice time and need to be a jack of all trades, I think he becomes a very effective second pairing defenceman you can play against the other team's top forwards.
Ya no kidding ur mentioning a name that’s not even there anymore wouldn’t even of dropped this video boys
Hutson, Dobson and Matheson are all puck moving defenseman. If we utilize them in that order, given Matheson stays for this season, having one of those players on the ice every shift would do wonders for the offense.
Love the trades and deals Montreal Canadiens have made this Month! Gonna be an exciting start of season! Can't wait 😂
Trade Matheson to accumulate assets for a 2c next year. Plain and simple..would be nicde to keep him but we have mre improtant needs
You talk about veterans but you forget that Carrier is a young veteran and he can play a role with the young players.
Thank you for the content!!❤ All we need is the right advice on how to invest in crypto and we will be set for life, made $58,000 profit from trading last month regardless of how bad it gets on the economy.
Uhhhhh of course the left side is set with Ghule and Hutson there. The LD for the third pairing is whatever cause those you can easily get via trade or in house. For Starr’s comment about our D, the top 4 of Dobson, Ghule and Reinbacher except for Hutson provide flexibility. The 3 are two-way defensemen and can be shutdown players unlike Hutson who’s the QB for the PP1. So, no we do not have too many of the same type of players. These podcasts are more like fan discussions than real journalism. The Bob MacKenzie’s of this world will be sorely missed when he retires for good.
You really didn't answer the opening question – Do we have too much of the same type of D? Shaun Starr's opening comments are my main concern along with having the right team salary for D two years from now. Huston/Carrier are very small and not physical. Dobson/Matheson are very similar – skate like the wind but not physical. All 4 are not physical and do not hit a lot. The Caps ran all over Hutson/Carrier/Matheson in the playoffs. So much so that everyone was screaming for Xjekaj. Adding just Xjekak did not make a huge difference – they still ran over Carrier. A stated goal was more grit/compete. We are going in the opposite direction – adding more skating/skill, not more grit! Also our salary hit for D will be the highest in the league if we give Hutson @$9.5M next July 1st without even considering Matheson UFA salary or that Carrier will also be on contract year. If we spend $ on Matheson/Carrier as 3rd pair D it will keep us too close to salary cap and spending way to much on D but it will also be a really soft/small D – I am not sure soft/small D works in the NHL playoffs as the series against the Caps showed.
The only 2 clear offensive Dmen are Hutson and Dobson, im not worried at all
I have hard time to see your most used D going to a 3rd pair. Unless there is a trade, I see Guhle-Dobson, Matheson-Hutson, Xhekaj-Carrier. Pairing Hutson and Carrier would resolve in 2 sub six feet players. Once Reinbacher is ready (next year) I would replace Matheson with him and move Hutson to the left.
when was this recorded?
WIFI should be on 3rd pairing
There is rumor about McTavish wanting out of Anaheim! Any thoughts??
I disagree with Marco D’Amico
RNH or an other experienced center, even at 32, would be perfectly acceptable
That gives Hage or Paupanekis or others plenty of time to develop
Mtl has already forgot how they got pushed around by was they constantly say get bigger while getting smaller
They use Mike Matheson wrong. Everyone sees it. He is an offensive defenseman being used as a shutdown guy.
Very Strong words but I love the pick-up. I'm a big Dobson fan. I feel this is an attempt to address that need for a number one defenseman. He was certainly the number one of the Island. The trading of Mailloux helped alleviate some of the logjam of defense prospects and added a forward prospect who us two years further along his development path and has a pretty good NHL season under his built. The two teams traded from strength to fill weaknesses so good for them. Mailloux for a variety of reasons will get a much better chance in St Louis.
Montreal now is looking at Dobson, Matheson, Guhle, Hutson, Carriere, Reinbacher, Struble? Xhekaj ,Engstrom, Trudeau, del gaizo and whatever Handel, McNeil, Pickford and Vig might be.
Can make a deal with Matheson at leisure.I love Matheson. One of my favourite hab pick-ups.
Perhaps this year for that second line center.
See this year how well the habs do controlling shots against. Montreal was 23rd in the league last year giving up 29 SAPG. Lets see if that improves.
I wouldn't take RNH on a bet.
Matheson will be mo0ved at the deadline or offseason, depending on the habs in the standings, just do tot he number, habs need money for other players. Jackeye / engstrom can play bottom play ld. carrier is 3rd pair when reinbacher is ready/
If I was Marty I would go with 1-Guhle/Dobson 2- Hutson/Matheson 3- Engstrom/Carrier 7th Xhekaj
We lack toughness on the blueline big time.
Add Dobson, Bolduc, Blais and you are better off than DVO, Armia and Pezzetta. We have vets remaining on the third line and kids that are almost ready to take over on the forth line. We are solid in nets and on défense. I hope Matheson takes less to stay in MYL because a bottom 3 on D with Carrier on his right would be SOLID.
Habs have a good defense…great? …I hope so. They are still young and prone to mistakes but as they gain experience, yes they can be great.
Didn’t even listen to this. Just can’t forget
“summer of Pierre,’ summer of Trotz’ …
Summertime doesn’t win anything. If you ask your players for loyalty & buy-in; you better be prepared to show it too.
It's an 82 game season, plus playoffs, plus practices. A wise man would know that there will be injuries. (and or personal matters) that will affect players. Your D and forward lines will change throughout the season; therefore, a wiseman will know that they need to rely on other players to fill in as required and just on 7 D men or just eleven forwards. It would be best to be able to rotate in guys to keep everyone healthy, rested, and motivated. So the team is much more than the 7 – D or 11 forwards.
