Connor McDavid just shook the NHL world. On July 1st, 2025, the Edmonton Oilers captain officially became eligible to discuss a new contract—but there’s a problem. Talks haven’t even started. After a heartbreaking Stanley Cup Final loss, McDavid isn’t rushing to re-sign—and it’s sparking massive speculation about his future with the Oilers.
Could McDavid walk away from Edmonton like Gretzky did in 1988? Will he sign a short deal to keep pressure on the team? Or will the Oilers be forced to consider a blockbuster trade before 2026 free agency?
In this video, we break down:
Why McDavid might reject a long-term deal
What NHL insiders are saying behind the scenes
How new contract rules and the rising salary cap affect him
What role his wife, Lauren Kyle, might play in his decision
Which teams are quietly watching the situation unfold
This could be the biggest NHL decision since the Gretzky trade. Stay tuned—McDavid’s next move could change the entire league.

I bet Connor signs a 4 year 70 million contract
If the Oilers lose McDavid i will never watch another NHL HOCKEY GAME IN MY LIFE.
HOW MANY CUPS DOES HE HAVE…. 0000000000000000 SO THAT PROBABLY MAKES MARCHAND A BETTER PLAYER WITH 2 CUPS SO FAR
I just got out of the pool here in kelowna with Connor mcdavid aFer smoking a big fatty & he says he wants to sign in the KHL for 30 million a year and a life of Lada SUVs and hang out PUTTIN
You should get your facts right. Gretzky was sold due to Pocklingtons personal financial situation. McDavid will sign a 2-4 year deal and then move on especially if the Oilers don't win a Stanley Cup which they will not due with their current goal tending situation. Hate to say it but see you Conner.
McDavid reminds of Ovechkin, both are great individuals but have been struggling to win SC. It took Ovi 13 years to win his first despite playing so long for a strong team therefore McDavid can look up to Ovi for the belief/patience but if he cannot win a SC in 3-4 years he may never win it in Edmonton.
He’s going to LA
I see him in a rangers jersey
Oilers giving mcdavid more reasons to leave
