  1. I think the only way this signing works out is if he completely leans into being a defensive defenseman. He’s not going to get the minutes here that he got in NY (playing with Fox) so I’m not expecting his offense to make any impact. He’s responsible defensively and physical in front of the net, and if that can be the main focus I think he’ll do ok.

He’s a slight upgrade to Oleksiak, who won’t be here after this season (if not sooner), for slightly less money. Once the forward market started shrinking it made sense to start looking to strengthen our D. However, Oleksiak was very bad the last couple seasons – a slight upgrade doesn’t really move the needle. I would have liked to see them go after an even bigger defensive upgrade, but those started drying up very quickly.

Overall, this is the sort of “mid” signing that we’re used to the Kraken making.

I hope it works out – if it does he’s only 27 so he’ll be in his “prime”. If it doesn’t work out, he plays the type of physical, net-front defense that teams like. With the cap going up that AAV won’t look as bad in a couple of seasons and he could be moved without too much effort.

I just wish they took a bigger swing.
