Scary hit, I was at the game and he was knocked out before he hit the ice. He was down and unmoving for at least 30 seconds. You can see how bad he was in the clip, head wobbling.
I will say that while I dont think it was a dirty hit, do think it was irresponsible. The D-man came across Smith, in FRONT of him.I do think he was going for the shoulder, but Ben Smith is a small guy (relatively) and the wings player needs to lower his body more, even if he slows down in the process
Plz… before you talk, learn the game. If you watch the film he lines him up to hit him shoulder to shoulder. Smith puts his head down and tries a pull move which basically lined him up to take Brendan's shoulder right to the head. Brendan didn't stick out his elbow to catch him or anything, this was suppose to be shoulder on shoulder and Smith dropped his head and turned right into his shoulder. Hockey is too fast of a game to react any differently then Brendan Smith did.
Accidental or not, what was its effect? Smith has a concussion. Brendan made a mistake and will learn from the incident. We can't have it both ways. Make the call and suspension or not…….
@MrSniffles06 yes, but Shanny is right, he didn't change direction enough to make it his own fault. In leading with the shoulder, it was wing-smith's recklessness. if he had played the body, he would have been fine.
accident.. for those of you talking about his elbow being raised afterwards… you were obviously not taught how to hit nor have you played hockey.. your elbow is supposed to follow through on ur hits to help push the person off the puck, but if you miss obviously it will look like you are trying to elbow someone. 2nd, brendan smith's timing was off, it wasn't that he was trying to go for his head because he did make body contact, ben was jus toe dragging with his head down. shit happens.
Ben knew he was going to get hit in this situation but decides to toe drag. I blame ben for putting himself in this position as much as Brendan for following through.
Normally I'm ont he side of the hitter. But u can clearly see in the first replay that Ben never changed his direction nor did he drastically move his head at the last second. He may have moved his arms and his stick, but other than that he didn't really move. So this hit is absolutely a suspension.

GO WINGS…but that was a nasty hit. No place for that stuff in our game!

I'm a Wings fan and I thought it was an unnecessary hit…not the way to make the team for sure. Hope the guy will be ok.
I don't know what a Dman is suppose to do in that situation he put his head down

Well maybe they are all skating too fast. How do we limit accidents on the road? Speed limits! Give the linemen radar guns! – Max (Pardon My Sports).
are they brothers?

@NHLandPS369606 gumble to gumble ahahahaha
that was not an accident clearly after the clash when he lifts his elbow is most clearly relates to things like headshot
