The Blue Jackets conceded to the thin UFA D market and signed Ivan Provorov to an eye-popping contract extension, coming in at over 2 million more than Aaron Ekblad and over 4 million more than Dante Fabbro. I can understand why GM Don Waddell made this decision, but it’s going to take some time to know just how bad or good this signing was for the team, as they are now set to run back the same defence as last season, despite claims of needing to upgrade on D.

If they sign Ehlers tomorrow I'll forgive them. I don't hate the length but I don't like the amount.
Only 1 mil bellow Dobson’s cap hit. Considering the money Hague and Bahl got, it was to be expected.
I think the market is far worse than we think it is and the cap is going to go up so other teams are pushing their cap space way harder than they traditionally would.
And i gotta say, "worst case" is a hair hyperbolic as worst case would be letting Provi go into free agency and us missing any defender at all. Im not saying its great, to be clear. It really does limit other moves.
DW was screwed when he decided not to trade him at the deadline. We got nothing for him, the contract is awful and now he's basically untradable. Now they have both Severson and Provorov as anchors for the next 5 years!! This kind of mismanagement will handicap their window before it even opens.
With Ekblad staying in FL and taking a discount the market for defenders was getting tighter. Provorov at 8.5M for 7 years is as good as we could expect. With the cap going up it's not a huge anchor.
He's a solid defender. The Top 4 is intact. We got Werenski/Fabbro and Provorov/Mateychuk. We'll see how it goes. Who else was out there? Orlov. Just wasn't a lot of options.
I am a Flyer’s fan… I loved Ivan Provorov’s work ethic and availability. He is the type of player who could play into his late thirties… I just wish he could play consistently to his potential… There is just something missing with him and I think it is ultimately psychological/confidence-related… and I wonder, ironically, if his religion preclude him from going to a sports psychologist because I think he’s a type of athlete who would flourish with one
Why hasn’t it been announced by by the team yet
He doesn’t get hurt and is a steady defence man and they wanted I wanted Provy and so did many others the defence wasn’t the issue it’s the goaltending
With the salary cap going up, his money consumes about the same percentage of the payroll as it did before. I like Provorov. I also like our top four D-men. It's the depth after that that is the problem. That shouldn't be that hard to fix. The big problem is Elvis. That trumps everything else.
