James van Riemsdyk headlines a quiet day 1 of free agency for the Detroit Red Wings

Most of the leagues top free agents didn’t make it to noon on July 1st. Meaning rather than overpay for a mediocre player, Detroit opted for several cheap depth players to help the team on the fringes. That’s fine and acceptable. BUT, missing on K’Andre Miller will hurt as the defender would have really helped Detroit now. #LGRW

  1. Wings will move the needle with time. Prospects need to progress. We had rookie man last year that only get better.

  2. Steve yzerman haters need to realize he was left with nothing but overpriced bad contracts this team is still paying for so i guess after next 2026 season and 1.8 million dollars is off the books #19 can work his magic until then staying under budget for the immediate future of this team so fans just don’t get or care to know why it’s taking so long for them to get completely competitive and still complain about it is embarrassing for those of us who went crazy watching n waiting for this team for decades to finnally raise the ultimate goal in hockey 🏆🏆so 💩relax and just enjoy it for now younger redwings fans! 🤷‍♂️💪😊👍

  3. So the Red Wings are:

a: a freight train with a bunch of empty box cars and five cabooses
b: a freight train in a large rail-yard with 32 sets of tracks, on a siding, not moving, waiting for other trains to pass first
c: a freight train who's engine needs an overhaul
    d: all of the above

    please vote

  4. Team podcasters like Brian Fisher and Ryan Hana are why there is a toxic anti-Kane meatball contingent on Twitter and even on youtube. Fisher during the depths of Kane's slump made a tweet complaining about Kane being used to market the team on national TV games, saying it should be Raymond or Seider or Larkin used. He set Kane up for Wings fans as the Other, an outsider, an enemy stealing something that properly belonged to beloved homegrown recent lottery picks Raymond and Seider. This tweet by Fisher was frankly bizarre in its tone and content – he was angrily attacking and setting a mob of fans against a member of the Red Wings, for – being used by a third party to advertise broadcasts. You will not find any posting even remotely similar to this by him about any other player ever.

Fisher and his co-host also keep repeating on the podcast nonsense about Kane being terrible or a liability 5v5 and a power play specialist, something not supported by any data from the time McLellan took over onward. Ryan Hana went out of his way when the Kane/TOR rumors were heating up to make a tweet bashing Kane and saying Toronto fans were crazy if they thought Kane could succeed on their first line, as he was a power play specialist who was terrible at 5v5. This is quite strange bc Kane has been a great success in Detroit played on the top line. And in fact his 2nd lines w Copp and Kasper became effectively the team's top lines down the stretch.

Under McLellan, Kane this past season had the 2nd most minutes per game among forwards at 5v5 behind only Dylan. McLellan was trying to make the playoffs and his playing time tells you who he thought gave him the best shot at doing that down the stretch.

These kinds of tweets and comments during podcasts all seem calculated to create a toxic feeling towards Kane and undermine his acceptance by Detroit fans, and his reputation as a player among Detroit fans. This seems like it's being done on Raymond's behalf, as there persists a belief they are competing for linemates, prestige and attention. That is part of it but another part is even more sinister; Kane is hated by leftists more than any other player in the history of sports. Fisher, like most sports podcasters, like Ryan Hana, is a strident leftist. The moment it seemed as if Kane was no longer going to pay off as a hockey player or be a viable player for the Red Wings going forward, the mask came off, the public tolerance for Kane ended – and the nastiness came out. Then Kane became Kane again – and the nastiness had to go back in the bottle and the hatred had to once again be more subtly delivered, this time as undermining the player's reputation w little asides lying about his performance.

Congrats on having succeeded in creating a genuinely toxic element in the Wings fanbase online and having turned a significant % of the fans into rabid haters of a player who has been nothing but a bright spot for the Red Wings the last 2 years. The beauty of leftism.

  5. We can cobble together an unfunctional defensive core but we have no answers for top 6 winger… cold but true

  6. Detroit isn’t a bad team. They just have a few bad holes. Yzerman has 13.5 mil in cap after signing Soderblom. He probably isn’t starting the season with that much cap left. Who knows what he will do but that cap tells me something will happen. Don’t know if it will be good. But something at least.

  7. they traded in division because the return they got for a player they HAD to trade was RIDICULOUS. Brian if you were a GM your NHL team would be the worst in the league. you have no concept of value. this is a tremendous overpay for Carolina. i cant believe how easy it has been for this New York GM to continue to fleece teams for players he clearly doesnt want on this team. just a year ago New York was in cap hell with long term contracts on underproducing aging players. somehow he managed to turn his crap into a multitude of draft picks and young players and one of the best defensemen in the league for peanuts. Miller is no better than a 2nd line LD. they gave up a top of the second round RD already NHL player that MAY be better than Miller, the best 1st round pick they have next year and a 2nd round pick and ALSO handed out 7.5 million for 8 years to a 2nd pairing dman. what kind of contract would Detroit have to give Edvinsson next year if they make this deal and Edvinsson plays with Seider this year???? think McFly THINK

  8. By the time the free agency market open it was a barren market. So it came to what was expected really; nothing to brag about or that really met or addressed our needs.
Just JVR the replacement at the loss of Tarasenko at a lower cap hit.
Hopefully we find something out there via trade amongst the RFA market. Like a Luke Hughes, Byram, Rossi or McTavish.
We certainly have the cap space and the only way I see us addressing our needs in the present.

  9. Take a deep breath guys… everyone is losing patience (and I totally understand why), but we should be glad Yzerman didn’t waste his time making any desperate signings today. The only FA still worth looking at is Elhers and going into today I only had interest in him as well as Gavrikov who we knew was going to sign with the NYR. I’m all for Steve making a big trade this summer (Robertson is the guy to over pay for), but again let’s not do something stupid out of desperation. Hate to say this, but it’s obvious we’re waiting for the rest of the youth (another 1-3 seasons) before we go all in. Just look at our future salary cap – next summer we’ll have $46.7M in cap space and only Edvinsson to prioritize in terms of resigning (maybe bring back Kane for year four if he wants to come back?). The summer after that, we currently only have Larkin, Raymond and Seider locked up long term with legit only Compher and Rasmussen the only other players still under contract and it’s the last year of their contracts. I know it’s painful right now, and Steve absolutely could be better, but if we can accept the harsh reality we’re gonna need to wait another 1-2 seasons before this team becomes a regular playoff team pushing to become a contender hopefully we can find some additional patience.

  10. The Wings are in one of the worst positions in the NHL. They're not good enough to be a playoff team, and not bad enough to get a really high draft pick. Look at the Atlantic. Who are we better than? Buffalo and maybe Boston. That puts us, at most, at 6th in the division. That's not gonna cut it. Hopefully we get to see a lot of young guys given a look to see what they got. I'd rather have Antti Tuomisto on our 3rd pair right side than Justin Holl. We know what Holl is, so give a kid a look. Maybe we have a hidden gem, maybe we have a bust, either way, he can't be too much worse than Holl.

  11. Here’s the thing…I feel like it’s a tad premature to get frustrated and mad on day one of free agency. They were never signing any of the big free agents. Sucks to hear…but that’s just what it is. Sounds like the Wings didn’t have what a lot of teams were looking for so far, where trades are concerned. The Miller thing I feel like the Wings could have done…but we don’t know the behind the scenes. Maybe Miller wanted to go to Carolina, maybe Yzerman wants to keep draft picks for a bigger trade or an offer sheet. We don’t know until we know. Seems a bit odd that he’s been clearing cap space though…I would think something has to be coming, but…we don’t know until we know.

  12. Glad to see another year of Larkins prime is going to be wasted while every other team in the east we were competing with improved. Bravo.

  13. JVR = discount Tarensenko, looking forward to his 13 goals and 22 assists. Dude will probably miss 10-15 games. Whatver.

  14. The story I have seen with Miller is that he was prepared to sign an offer sheet with Carolina at the same price point.

  15. No trade, restricted trade and tax haven city's are killing the league. 20 years from now there will be 4 divisions in the league FLORIDA/VEGAS/and will just split TEXAS into 2 divisions. You may think I am crying salty tears here but tell me honestly that this shit isn't causing a major problem in the league now and definitely into the future. This "Free Agency" is a laughable relic of the past man. 👎

  16. Our PP was pretty damn productive last year. If JVR improves the PP, that's great. At $1M, I have no problem with him in a bottom six role if he maintains 0.5 ppg production.
Honestly, this existing roster, maintaining their PP, and bringing the PK to league average will improve us significantly. Gibson in goal could improve us to actual wild card contention.

Bernard-Docker is the piece I am most interested in watching. Looking at his numbers, he could be a sneaky good pickup. And Lord knows we need better defense.

We have lots of cap space to make a trade before the season starts. Or poach from a team who bought big in FA and looking to get under the Cap. I prefer a bunch of options, to an overpay of a FA for many years.

  17. You can tell that some kids in the comments play way too much NHL 24 with their trades and cries.

  18. I think they should start playing the prospects that are ready and then see what they have and maybe they will be better off using them instead of playing slow no scoring players that are not helping the team especially the last 3 years a lot needs to change and it’s not fair to cut Tarasenko for JVR who had one point less last season, cheaper yes but can they actually get anyone who will change the team up front because they sure have not done anything with the back end. Defense is more important it goes goalies Defense then forwards, if you don’t have the defense then it’s not going to change much especially by keeping the same Penalty killers who were last in the league. I think keep putting in prospects as they will get better and you don’t lose them if they need to work on their game. Danielson has done enough to make the team, Mazur had an unlucky injury but give him a chance and if Lombardi doesn’t play well try MBN and see where he is and kisskinen. We need to see what we have and not just worry about overpaying a player who might not be able to play the system. This team needs more than just Free Agents. They need to get the future going and quit holding them back, waive Ras ect. If they are best out, enough of waiting for them to be waivers eligible, I would rather lose with rookies than lose with veterans
