A few things here. Marty isn’t a complimentary player, he’s a legit top 4 shutdown defenceman who has consistently gotten better offensively as well. Without him in the lineup (look at the playoffs) the defence looks nowhere near the same. This is a physical, shutdown, puck moving defenceman who lays tons of hits, blocks tons of shots, and is one of the faster defencemen in the league. This deal is fantastic and will ensure that going forward we will have one of our best defencemen
John Carlson paired with Martin Fehervary is much better than John Carlson paired with Sandin, Chychrun, or Alexeyev. We saw in the playoffs how much the Capitals missed Martin Fehervary.
I like this contract much more than the Chychrun contract. I like Fehervary more than Chychrun, and we're getting him for 3 million per season less than we're paying Chychrun. Chychrun is a great offensive defenseman, but we can't play him on the penalty kill. Fehervary is by far our best left handed penalty killer.
You clearly doesnt know how good Marty is. He is great defensively and probably one of the best skaters in the league. This is a really good deal
Comparing Fehervary to Bahl and Hague is so bad. Gavrikov is a better comparison and he still got a better deal. Find me a big great skating physical 2 way d-man and tell me he isnt worth 6 mill.
Caps fans are delusional and have PTSD from getting knocked out of the playoffs. now because the team lost right after he got injured, theyre all saying "SEE! IF WE HAD FEHERVARY WE WOULD HAVE WON THE CUP!!!!" and its completely divorced from reality. Fehervary is not worth 6 million a year and the guy made statements in the media similar to Tavares about wanting to stay, so the Caps didnt have to give him a 300% raise they could have played hardball.
what the Caps are doing lately has been so disappointing that at some point you have to start talking about whether or not Chris Patrick was even ready to be a GM. it may have been too early for him and they probably should have stayed with Brian.
Fehervary didn't play with Carlson that much this year.. My impression is that played mostly with Matt Roy in the second pairing (Chychrun started with Carlson, but slipped to the third pairing with van Riemsdyk), and the Caps really missed him in the playoffs. They're locking up a key defenseman at age 26 (contract starts next off-season) for the prime of his career.
