People banking on another 66/87 situation forget the NHL is a COMPLETELY different place than it was in 2005 and especially 1984
Nahhh, I'm going for the positive path. The fact is that we can enjoy two more seasons of Sid. How many supporters of other teams have to wait a century for that, if they get it at all? We have a GM who at least has a well thought out plan. And part 1 of which has been smartly executed. Young players you get excited about. And there is plenty of room to shake up and improve the roster in the coming years. Maybe as early as the next few months. Let's go!
this fatalistic negativity is what happens when both city teams are nowhere near competing
Well said….many people are very dumb!!!
Really keep POJ because it's a cheap contract, hard pass
At this point in his career if you watched him play you should know by now he's pretty terrible so I don't understand that logic…
DK, agreed with pretty much what you are saying, there is and has been a plan in place and its being executed, will it work? who knows but at least its a plan and tbh I like it. Just look how fast KD filled the cupboards with picks
Great episode. My negativity doesn't stem from approach or possibility of a quick turn around. It stems from the person who is leading this, Kyle Dubas. If you look at his history as a GM, before he came to the Penguins in 5 drafts, only 2 players became NHL players, one a key player in Matthew Knies. Washington has had 7 good NHL players with 13 fewer picks.
The stats says 8-9 players over 5 year window of drafting will play NHL, and 4-5 become solid NHL players. The stats say that Dubas underperforms. Keep in mind in that window of time he had a lot of picks accumulated.
If you look at his trading history you will see, now with the benefit of time, that most of his trades were L instead of W's. His free agent signings tend to not workout, and often are overpaid. I'm painting quite a negative picture I know, and the guy could improve and make better decisions this time I'm not suggesting that isnt' possible. But his track record isn't good when he has had the exact same situation or similar in the past. Washington is a good template, but they hit, or won almost every free agent signing and trades. And their drafting produced 5 roster spots of their NHL team, which would be considered above average. That is where my negativity comes from, there is no evidence from the past that this time the person leading the ship will be able to hit home run moves. Time will tell, but I would make the arguement in his time in Pittsburgh, free agent signing, trading, has been equally as 'bad'. I would say it looks like his drafting here has the potential to be better than his previous years, but that is incumbent on Burnicke being the top 2 defensemen he potentially could be. That is where my negativity stems from.
And although money won't be an issue with cap situation over the next few years, I still wish they dont' give 14 million for Marner to come here.
Tanking is stupid. I’ve got faith in this DM’s plan. Feel even better about Dan Muse behind the bench. Now if he would bench defenseman who give up on pucks that would be great. Keeping the previous goalie coach on is questionable.
👻
I dont see how the penguins will be any different from chicago or Detroit lol nothing is changing in 2 years and then after that sid will be gone so im not sure how any one could be excited. This franchise is gunna be in shambles soon
How does sending the team into the abyss send us back into contention quickly? Teams that have tanked have not been able to build to a playoff spot, whereas teams like the capitols and St Louis have been able to be in contention without plummeting to 0.
I think it will be a huge win dumpling E65. Man please go on July first. 🙏
I completely agree that a scorched earth rebuild isn't always the right or even a winning strategy, but that's kind of missing the point. On the flip side there's also a danger in becoming a Minnesota Wild type team that is never bad enough to get the high end guys and just stays mediocre forever. The Penguins have a history of staying overly loyal to players and not making the tough long term decisions. So yeah, when people hear others insisting on keeping super mid players like Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell, it conjures thoughts of just being the Minnesota Wild and that's why the push back. And the other thing being missed on purpose is that people want to have exciting players to watch and cheer for. While the prospect pool is no longer bottom of the league, there's still no top end pieces worth being excited over.
Let’s go get Sam Bennett a couple solid defenseman and bring up mcgroarty and koivunen
Thanks DK, I needed that. A new season means a new team, and this one will have more of a new car smell more than many. I think that has been part of our problems in the past. Have we been kinda stale? It's recently been easier to be a debbie downer than a gorilla beating his chest.
if someone wants to be negative online DK there is no stopping it. Letting it get to you is just mqking their day. That said, if Jarry is on the ice om game 1 i will burn my jerseys 🙂
Within the next month Dubas will show some cards.
It really doesnt take much squinting to see a situation where the team makes the playoffs this year while also having its best farm in 20 years
Idk if Dubas is a great gm, but its clear that he *cares*. More than I can say for Ben Cherington.
It’s ok DK. Just get on board and embrace the full rebuild because it is happening. Have some faith in Dubas and Wes Clark, this isn’t Hextall rebuilding this team.
Sadly, at least a part of the whining comes from those who just became fans during Sid's career. Pretty much always in contention. But now that things aren't so great – and it happens to ALL teams – they see doom and gloom.
I don't think Dubas js the right guy. He couldn't get the job done in Toronto, he fired Sullivan, and what's worse, he hired the wrong guy (Todd Nelson). But he's still gotta be better than Tomlin.
Good morning DK and Taylor, your friend Victor from Canada 🇨🇦 here! I, too, have been one who couldn't accept HOW Dubas was changing things. In MY perception and opinion, as a greatly respected hockey analyst within my home, Iol I believe, and have been mentored by a man who used to tell this all the time….." Sometimes good, sometimes bad, you never know!" That used to drive me wacky!!! Later, after years he would start explaining, I also believe as I was growing up abit and seeing the world through A Different Pair of Glasses, that MY reality and perception are just that mine AAAAAND could be wrong, but time tells. I know, sorry DK, I hope I'm not boring you or taking up too much. My point, at first the unthinkable of Sid & boys NOT in the playoffs or taking a run at the Cup was hard and we Pens fans didn't accept it. When change happens, most people do not like or accept it, whatever it is, it's human nature. BUT, after a couple of years Dubas, what he's been doing, and sort of seeing the next year or two play out….there is definitely a lot of potential for our beloved team to enjoy a term of success! Maybe we pick up a player that's 5$ mill out of our pocket to help another teams cap situation but receive a 2nd. So what, pick him up for a year or two and we get a Brunick or someone potentially? Maybe Dubas has his eyes on a certain player next offseason that he actually wants to be a part of this next run for us? Maybe we receive a 1st for Karlsson because we can eat a chunk of retention of his contract for a team that desperately needs him but can't afford him, that would give us 2 1st next year, eh?! Anyways, THANK YOU for the kick in the 🫏 back to reality! Blessings 🙏 ❤️ ✝️
As they build the team I believe they will be better. So good vibes for me. Thank you DK, love the show.
I don’t know how the next few seasons will play out but this team seems properly run. Management has a vision and is executing on it. Night and day from the Pirates management
While I respect your opinion DK I do find it weird to label mine as “ slamming doors “ “ pouting “ or a negativity. Rebuilding is apart of pro hockey not something to be upset about.
You mention that the stage is set for young guys to come in and make this team good or to compete. Well our best young players are McGroarty,Koivunen,Murashov,Blomquist,Pickering,Brunicke and you could add Broz in too. Blomquist played this season and seemed to need some more seasoning. So we don’t know if he will be NHL ready next season. Murashov will most likely not be NHL ready either. Broz may get a shot in the NHL next year same with brunicke
Pickering,McGroarty,Koivunen should all be in the NHL but typically young players in their first season/ seasons are average players and grow into more. I think you may be expecting more than what we will get out of them.
And yes picking up a 2 C via trade or free agency is the likely choice and a great idea. But that’s just to replace Malkin. So when it’s Sid’s time to go what is your plan? To also somewhat replace Sidney Crosby through trade or free agency ? I say somewhat because there is no such thing as replacing sid but I think we both know how unlikely it is to land a 1C through trade or FA those situations don’t come across very often.
For those who think I am saying just tank and we will inherit McKenna through the draft that is NOT what I am saying. As great as it would be to get him no one is promised the first overall pick However in order to be a contender again chances are we need to be drafting within the top ten unless we get lucky landing a pick like Kaprizov, Kucherov, point.
There is a lot of holes to be filled on this team and not a lot of time to do so if the plan is to contend.
You also mention getting an 18 year old from the draft won’t make a difference for a 2C option but then say things will be a lot better after drafting two 18 year olds in tomorrows draft. If your idea is to contend now then those two 18 year olds who likely won’t be in the NHL next season and then maybe get a shot the year after that timeline doesn’t fit very well with your idea of contending now especially with the ages of our top players.
Which is how it should be we will drafting talent to help our future not try and rush players into the NHL.
Our top players Crosby,Rakell,Rust,Malkin are all 32 and over with the Crosby and Malkin both being gone likely in three years that leaves you with a 35 year old Rakell a 36 year old rust and then the second line C you say we get from FA or trade. At this point we hope Koivunen and McGroarty are producing numbers similar to Rust and Rakells current ones. However this still leaves us will a Crosby sized hole to fill which is very hard to fill through trade, FA or drafting outside the top ten.
Every team who wins a cup has star talent and if we’re not gonna get that through high picks in the draft then we’re relying on getting REALLY lucky
Not to mention we will still have a goalie problem unless we pay to move Jarry or he pulls it together. As it would be hard to move Jarry with that contract so likely we’d have to pay.
I wouldn’t consider this being negative but these are realistic points that the team needs to deal with. If fans will get this upset over a rebuild it’s concerning if they’ll actually support the team in one. Pens can’t magically be good forever and treat real life like it’s Franchise mode in a NHL video game. Personally I’m excited for a rebuild and to turn this team around to contending again people should be excited for the young talent we can draft in the next few years.
I would love also if your way of trying to contend now works and pens win a cup again I would love to be proved wrong and see that but it doesn’t seem realistic.
I am also curious to hear your what your full plan would be for the team if contending now is your idea
You nailed this one DK!!!
As long as Dubas doesn't become an analytics Zealot and fondle Cherington autographed pictures I am OK DK. 😂
Buccos ball is not the model for the Pens. Go Dubas!
Thank you DK.
Finally someone is pushing back against this totally bottom out theory.
Anyone know how the 5 million dollar payment the pens owe EK on July 1st? If it means they owe him another 5 million for playing the season then it should make it easier to trade him.
I am tired of hearing all the doom and gloom. They are in a fantastic position to rebuild this team!
