John Gibson traded to the Detroit Red Wings | Day 2 draft round up

After years of speculation and rumor, it finally happened. John Gibson was traded by the Anaheim Ducks to the Detroit Red Wings for Petr Mrazek and two picks. How much of an upgrade is this? Also, we round up day 2 of the draft and cover the comments Yzerman made in the post-draft media availability. #LGRW

  1. Let's hope there's a decent D-corp playing in front of him. Stevie's job isn't complete for this off-season, and I'll "grade" this acquisition after he's done.

  2. Hard to hate this trade when you realize Anaheim is paying Husso and Mrazek 6.45 million to back up Dostal.

  3. I noticed many teams drafted quite tall players. Maybe you could do a show sometime on the theme of the NHL starting to become more of a taller and bigger size player league (if you agree with that premise)

  4. I am very surprised that Veleno is being bought out. I think he is a decent player. Meanwhile, Holl is still with us.

  5. Dont know enough about Gibson to comment, but the fact that Stevie is FINALLY trading future picks is the momentum swing we needed to see. Maybe a year too late, but this is a good sign going forward.

  6. Demko is the only other clear upgrade via trade that immediately comes to mind. And who knows what Vancouver would be asking. Demko is 29, makes 5M for one more year. But it also sounds like he is more of a serious injury concern than Gibson. It's a very reasonable swing to take. And the backstory shows that sometimes the GM is actually working on something productive. It's just that the player was injured when they were previously talking a trade. Not all the time! But sometimes.

  7. Over thirty. Injuries. Last time he was a starter his save percentage was under 900. Lots of mileage. 2 million less in cap space for the same problem as Mrazek.

  8. 🤷‍♂️its a start to some of the many problems this team has faced for the last 8 years;new nhl coach and goalie hopefully #19 gets the D-core figured out as well this season?🤷‍♂️🙏🤷‍♂️👍

  9. I was thrilled with the trade. I'm not expecting earth shattering moves, but I think Yzerman can address the D situation and maybe a top 6 LW.

  10. Something SY said in his presser that I thought was important (and has been said by other GMs this year), teams aren't looking for futures right now. So he's hoping other teams over extend themselves in FA and have to make trades for cap space. I.e. NYR get Gavrikov so they trade Miller for picks or prospects.

  11. Another season and another veteran goaltender. The wings draft goaltenders and the fan base never see them play for the Wings. It would be nice to draft a excellent future goaltender. Other than Jimmie Howard or Chris Osgood and both were expendable aß both weren't looked as great goaltenders by the Wings. This problem has to improve to have better goaltending.

  12. Genborg is a great pick!!!! Seen a ton of this guy live here in my hometown, i felt just like i did when i saw Gustav Forsling play at same age in SHL, loads of potential here🩵❤️🤍 was super sad that he left this offseason to play in Timrå (Zetterbergs old team) instead from next season. Super happy though to see Detroit draft him so i hopefully get to see him on my other fav hockey club in the future🔥🙌 #LGRW

  13. Yzerman not buying out the lackey's tells me this season will be more of the SOS. Why wouldn't you do that? He knows the fans aren't stupid. Amazing.

  14. Totally on board with this trade barely gave up anything and its def an upgrade but for the love of god Stevie please buyout Holl the clock is ticking 😅

  15. Just send Hall down to the minors. You get just as much relief if not more. You only have one more year on his contract. Rather see the cap hit for one year rather than spread it out over two years.

  16. Thanks for the content fellas!!

Cam Talbot and John Gibson on paper is actually UNREAL… I thought Talbot was phenomenal last season aside from 5-6 games here and there in the season. If Gibson can come in and share that weight with Talbot things could be VERY interesting. Here's to hoping they can find a flow together (and the "injury bug" stays away!!)

I'll stick up for Justin Holl. He's a fine 7th man, and i think he's ok with that. One more year and you could potentially offload him for a late round pick. With injuries teams can get desperate, and i think SY is hoping for that.

I hope Stevie takes a short to mid term shot at Ehlers in FA!!

  17. Apparently the reasoning to trading for Veleno was that he is a cheaper buyout. He's only 25 so it's only a 1/3 buyout cost.

  18. In the Gibson trade, they basically flipped back ups, Gibson had become the back up in Anaheim. Is he better then Mrazek? 100%, is he going to be 24 year old John Gibson? No. My issue is we have Cossa, Talbot was on the team to be the starter, you bring Cossa up to be the back up, get a year under his belt to get some experience. If he is our future goalie I keep hearing he is, when do we start playing him? He doesn't need to be the starter with Talbot. The Yzerplan doesn't seem to have any urgency so why not start playing him? That's what doesn't make sense.

  19. With all the possibilities, THIS is the big move? Another goalie past his prime? Has the fan base lost its mind?
