The Kings Simply Can’t Beat Edmonton, so What Changes Are Coming?

The coach stays and the GM is replaced. There’s cap space there to change the team’s make up if Ken Holland chooses to do so.

  1. They are not in contention based 100% on the results , they should move the vets go younger , not a full rebuild . But trade away kopitar and doughty, if you can't extend Kempe and fiala , trade them also . They are stuck in the worst place possible , not rebuilding and getting better but also not a threat to win anything.

  2. I think Holland is the difference maker and maybe brings us a young star like Bedard. Hiller is a rookie and has got to learn fast or he will be gone.

  3. I disagree that this was the Kings best chance. Of course I know hindsight is perfect but I think that the 2022 series was their best chance. Right now the Oilers are too experienced, versatile and talented to lose to the Kings. Most pundits were massively overvaluing the regular season form of these teams when previewing the series. There is a general trend among pundits to undervalue the Oilers in any given situation. For example, compare with the Carolina-Washington series. Most pundits were willing to forget the regular season and (correctly) pick Carolina. There is this perception that Carolina are a veteran team built for the playoffs but the facts don't back it up – they haven't come close to a cup in the last 5 years. The Oilers OTOH really do fit that profile. Its pretty laughable that moneypuck currently has the Canes at 27% for the cup and the Oilers at 19%. To bring it back to the topic of the video, the Kings are a decent playoff team, but the Oilers are top 2 in the league (Dallas might be better with Rantanen in current form) and have not lost to anyone except the eventual champs in the last 4 years. The best strategy for the Kings is just to not play the Oilers in the first round.

  4. Oilers vs Kings: 9-2 alltime
    Habs vs Bruins: 25-9 alltime

So when can we start saying that Kings vs Oilers is a bad matchup for the Kings? That's now 7 straight losses going back 36 years to The Trade.

  5. It really felt like the Kings were going to do it this year. And then they let their foot off the gas pedal and let Oilers do what they do best. The Oilers are the most offensively talented team in the league, and trying to sit back and weather the storm against them is a recipe for disaster. There is no lead that is safe against the Oilers and yet time and time again the Kings play aggressive, get ahead and then turtle up as if the Oilers didn't come back the last 20 times they tried that. There may be other factors at play, but coaching is the first thing that needs to change.

  6. I dont know how the placement system works in the playoffs but how are they always paired in the playoffs?

  7. As it goes in the West, the road to the Cup goes through Edmonton- with Vegas dropping off this rivalry could go on for years…

  8. Kings are going nowhere. They'll never get by McDavid and Draisaitl and by the time those guys slow down the Sharks and Ducks will be in their primes.

  9. McDavid and Draisaitl will always give the edge to Edmonton. These two superb forwards will always find a way to score critical goals. Break up 97-29, and the Kings may have a chance to beat Edmonton in the post season.

  10. The 3rd period scoring is evidence, to me at least, that Hiller’s shortening of the bench absolutely gassed the players despite all the talk that they were fine.

  11. Lobby the NHL to change the playoff format. Keep Gavrikov. Turcotte's been a complete bust at 5th overall in '19. Holland made some bad moves in EDM and said he wanted to retire. Now it sounds like he was forced out. Kempe has the best release in the league.

  12. Keep: Kempe, Danault, Kuemper, Gavrikov, Kuzmenko. Trade: Byfield (Meat Headed Player with Inaccurate Shot), Moore (Too Light/Head Case) and Laferriere (Uninspired). Release: Rittich. Retire: Lewis (with great retirement ceremony)

  13. Moving forward the LA Kings should 1st sign Gavrikov, Kuzmenko, Laferriere & Jeannot. Yeah, I believe the team is really good & one big name away from a great team. Keep Hiller, he had the whole team bought in to his game plan. Excellent goalie coming up next season in Erik Portillo, who had 24 victories last season which were the most by a rookie goaltender in Reign (AHL) history. I believe GM Holland will be patient & ready to make that big move when the time presents it self either early or at trade deadline. Let's see what happens… Go Kings Go!!!

  14. I don’t see how you could keep Hiller as coach after that series. I still have no idea what that Goalie Interference challenge was about. Terrible challenge that really swung the momentum of the series.

  15. Danault also had McDavid's number in the Covid "Canadian Division" season… the only center to do so in the division.

  16. As an Oiler fan that was the best kings team I've seen in the last 5 yrs. Let Byfield have the reins play him as your number 1 c Kopitar as 2 and danault as 3. Keep kempe for sure, retire lewis, get a good 4 th line center. Trade targets would be to sign a fast skating puck moving d-man or a fast speedy center for match ups. Other then that the kings are well built to compete in a tough western Conference.

  17. It’s tough, they are a great team, capable of winning the division and capable of going on a deep run but Edmonton is the kryptonite. it feels like they are just 1 piece away every year, wether that’s a playoff performer goal scorer to put the puck in the net at high stakes moments, maybe its a tough 4th line that could score like they had when they won the cup in 2012 and 2014, maybe its just as easy as a coaching or GM change and a desertion of the defense first mindset.

Don’t get Mitch marner please. Or any leafs for that matter. We need young dogs to take over the locker room after kopitar and doughty are gone not more losers.

This is why i want one of us or Edmonton to either win the division or get a wild card spot, while the other finishes 2nd or 3rd as usual. Despite them being my favorite team in Canada (minus the Senators) i rooted against Vancouver winning the division last year as the season was winding down for this very reason. If Edmonton wins instead, we play Dallas, meaning we either win, or (more likely considering the juggernaut Dallas was last year) we lose, and with that loss, management loses the ability to excuse it by saying "It's just one team that we can't beat", because there's only so many teams that you can be unable to beat before you stop being able to maybe get lucky and not have to play any of those teams en route to the SCF.

  19. I really do think this team can contend with the right tweaks to the lineup (and potentially some slight system changes). Byfield and Clarke are going to be insanely good next season. Laferriere is also a verrrrrry good young player that could take another step. I'd like to see them trade for Byram's rights (or offer sheet him). I think that's one thing the Kings are clearly missing – a left shot d man who can skate and move the puck well and contribute offensively. You look at their left side now and it's nothing but stay at home shutdown D. Free agents like Bennett could certainly also help. Perhaps the biggest changes though need to come from head coach Jim Hiller – He needs to learn to trust his players more and manage ice time better. Kings were playing 3-4 skaters down all series because Hiller was terrified to give certain players ice time. As a result their key players were completely gassed by the time the 3rd period rolled around. Not a very strong game plan / recipe for success.

  20. Really glaring miss not addressing Hiller's player management in the playoffs. A huge part of the 3rd period goal difference is the team having nothing left in the tank because he'd only really used 13 skaters.

  21. It's a shame to see my LA Kings just constantly get paired to the Oilers for the last four years due to the playoff format Bettman introduced.

I'm sure I speak for many if not all Kings fans that we could easily dispatch of several teams in the West (Blues, Jets, Wild and Golden Knights at the very least) if we were paired to them. I had full confidence we could have beaten Vegas this year if we got paired but sadly it's been Edmonton. They are the ones who can penetrate LA's defense given the unreal and generational talent they've been gifted with.

  22. i am kinda of the thinking that the kings may need to go get someone who brings some fire to the lineup. because they kept letting off in the third period. and it absolutely cost them the series. if they kept the pressure they did through the first 40 minutes for the last 20, i think edmonton gets swept there. but if you give a desperate edmonton team 20 minutes of free rein in your end, you can't be surprised when they start lighting you up. and game 5 was horrific. Outside of Kuemper, NOBODY showed up. and, whether captain or coach, you gotta use that to fire up the team. which didn't happen.

  23. I hear a lot of rumbling about the Kings going after Marner but Sam Bennett would be a better target. He doesn't have the skill of Marner but he sure does have grit which is what this team lacks.

  24. Portillo dealing with a back injury late in season and missed a lot of time, even the playoffs. Don't know how serious it is, but back injuries are unpredictable. Hope he's the backup.

  25. Blake was not fired. I feel very confident that he was offered an extension before the post-season but (to Blake's credit) he refused to sign the extension until after the post-season. I think this based upon what was said in the "stepping down" conference by Luc and KH's comments when he got hired.

The road to the Final goes through EDM. I'm not interested in facing a different team in the 1st round if EDM eventually awaits. Gavrikov is an excellent stay at home d-man, but if he is looking for 9+/yr, he needs to put up more #'s offensively. DD is good for another 2 yrs at 11.0 if he's healthy. Problem there is he was never 100% for the season. Hopefully, he will bounce back.

I'd be OK with a rebuild, but I also understand if they want to slay the Oilers. Problem there is we need a McD or Drai player in the Kings system, and those won't be available. Only hope to get depth and get a bunch of players like Jeannot who have more punch offensively as well. EK91 has been humbled a bit recently, maybe he can be pried out after the championship in AL although who wants to leave playing with McD and Drai?
