hey sons of eerie our artwork looks better on your walls hamburg brewing please visit our tap room on boston state road hamburg new york and finally fatboy surf club for all your surfing needs all right and good morning and welcome into another edition of d’s hockey hotline uh i am matt dyer your host and as always with me uh riding shotgun brian 716 beyond 716 how we doing this morning
we’re doing bright and early waiting for saber news refreshing that twitter feed you know basically what i’ve been doing the entire week
well nothing nothing happened this week nothing happened this week so that’s the show goodbye goodbye but quickest hockey ever 15 seconds
uh no but in all seriousness though i mean we saw jj purka get uh get traded this week we had the draft last night um they took uh uh redeem uh murka murka gotta gotta work on saying that but um
how do you feel about how everything went down this week and how do you feel because i i mean i’ve i’ve literally been on a work trip trying to sit with this stuff and
not had anybody to talk because it’s literally go to go to new jersey for a work trip and uh the armpit of america and uh
easy easy you’re talking to a jersey i didn’t say the people i never said the people but driving around that i will say this driving around that city not being able to turn to the left really pissed me off
i will say yeah the aren’t the jug handles a weird concept matt like what is this
like oh my god like every time i’m trying i i try to go to waw wa and i like to get gas or to get a drink or something like that and i have to go i have to go a mile down the road just to turn back around i’m like
“yep you can’t you can’t u-turn to jersey it’s not legal you can’t make a ui.” so it’s
oh i absolutely did if they if they if they pulled me over they’re like “oh i’m not from here.” i have no idea i’ve never been here
and the fact that you can’t pump your own gas in new jersey how about that you get served which i actually think is kind of nice especially in the winter if you if it’s you know the weather’s bad or something or if you’re not feeling well
it is kind of nice that someone serves you gas but you just so when you’re so used to just pumping it yourself like even here in california like i i i’m not used to someone serving me gas anymore so
i’m not used to anybody serving me in general and every everything we did you know you did do in new jersey is like you got to have somebody else touch whatever before you touch it it’s like holy cow in all in all seriousness in all seriousness kevin adams tried to put a little touching of his himself on this team um you know i don’t i don’t like i did not like the trade itself um i mean i like the players we got back like let’s be serious let’s you know i can’t say i didn’t like we got a good good right right-handed uh right shot defenseman in uh kessle kessle ring
um and then you know terry pagula got his uh his son that he never had even though he’s got one in in josh don um because you know shane don is was like his favorite player for all the times i cannot i cannot stand i cannot rem uh tell you how many times i remember um hearing shane don’s name always in rumors to come to the sabres because terry pigle loved them so much but um so we finally got a don uh here with the buffalo sabres um
and i don’t have a problem with the players themselves but you don’t trade a potential 30 to 40 goal scorer for absolutely nothing yeah i think uh i’m just gonna i’m i’m collecting my thoughts i just want to give a shout out to our 716 sport blizzard thank you for joining us as always we really appreciate you as well uh for that but you know one comment in the midst of the almost infinite first round last night which we’ll get into in a little while emily kaplan made an interesting comment that i think kind of relates to what we’re talking about with this trade she said that she’s heard from a lot of teams that player for player trades in terms of a lot of this the talent or if you’re trying to upgrade have been very very difficult to make because a lot of these teams are trying to do the same thing because of the accelerating cap because you have a lot of teams that are towing that playoff line i mean even as the sabres right matt we we had that 13game winless streak we still feel like we’re towing that playoff line right you have a lot of teams like detroit you have detroit has made the playoffs in nine years too just as an example i mean you think they’re feeling the pressure
i’m sure they’re in the same boat as the sabres right now right i mean eisman’s you know light may be getting hot but but i i would say in terms of that i think it’s been very difficult
that’s one that’s one thing right so if if but let’s say you’re trying to get you’re trying to trade b turk and you think man i want to get jordan kyu but maybe the price is just so extreme and we don’t realize it that
again i’m not giving kevin adams a pass here man you know how we feel about kevin adams right it it’s his smuggness his arrogance and the way he is it drives me crazy but i think that i is one thing that is really causing this to be it’s just making it a little difficult obviously the no movement clauses that the sabres have created did that culture themselves it’s hard to ask a player to move we these are questions that we don’t know matt like what if what if purka was offered to team y or x right
we know we know we know this we know this uh frank cavelli and elliot freriedman and drager they all came out and said that there was all these packages that were being put together and the market was huge for jj perka because he’s a 23 year old rfa that is a potential 30 30 to 40 goal scorer like and then there was other teams that were not mentioned like we heard we heard we heard marco rossi plus plus we heard jordan kyu plus we heard um uh a team out there had two picks and a a player and a prospect uh two first round picks not just two picks two picks two or two first round picks you trade them for kessle ring and josh like i get it they could honestly turn out to be
franchise differing players great but you again like 2022 or 23 or whatever it was when we missed the playoffs by 91 or by one point you don’t know what’s coming up with so you know what you have in purka
keep going with with purka give him and you know i’m going to take the victory lap on this and pat myself on the back saying
he did that is the exact i said five years 7.5 he got an extra point two
and there is no reason the savers should not have signed them signed him to a fiveyear 7.2 or $7.7 million contract yeah they could have there have been examples i i was listening to i think it was sneaky joe’s podcast or something he talked about jonathan drewan when he wanted out of tampa and they decided to keep him for over a year they said “okay i’m sorry we’re keeping you.” jonathan drew had a big play in one of their playoff runs and then eventually they did accommodate his trade request he he did eventually get traded to colorado but they kept him for over a year they said “no we have control over you.” that’s one way to do it right matt
the other thing too is i i i hear you on those trades that we were supposed to get i still wonder if there’s more to those that story that we don’t know were they asking for constellaneous were they asking for
asking for bigger pieces
who cares who cares
i i get it because
you know i feel like there had to be and i think rfas are not as valuable as we think they might be because you have to pay the player after you get them right like look purka at 7.7 doesn’t sound as good as purka on the elc not even close right that’s that’s the little layer to this that i think you know maybe look at noah doppson right the islanders traded their number one defenseman got two first round picks middle of the middle of the road in a in a blah draft right they got a good defensive but they didn’t touch one of montreal’s top five prospects not it’s not an amazing return either for for the islanders now they turned out to get great picks with those two picks they got lucky a lot of guys fell in their lap but you know what i’m trying to say like maybe there’s something about the rf phase too but i get i get the frustration when you see those rumors you’re like man what could have been we could have had jordan kyu right now i mean and i’m not saying that they don’t still have a trade worked out for jordan kyu or anything like that with bo and byron they’re just trying to figure whatever else out but um we we heard it from from freriedman and a couple other sources um you know on twitter uh or or insiders not sources insiders we heard i you know insiders
i apologize i was traveling for for you know nine hours yesterday card um if i if i screw up any words i i do apologize but um you got
in all in all seriousness though um you know elliot freeman coming out and saying that the the market is softened on on bo and byum and they’re the sabres aren’t getting um the the the compensation that they were looking for and that’s why he hasn’t been traded yet but then also to come out and talk out of the other side of your mouth saying that um vancouver vegas and and um two other teams are you know very much in the mix on bow and bar like what do we like that that makes zero sense if the market is softened
but you still have four or five teams uh you know involved he’s got to be go he’s got to be going to one of those teams so that either tells me that they’re further down the road with those teams or kevin adams just we know he he’s not doing what he what he what he’s meant to be doing you know
i’ll tell you matt i have a major problem with what he said about that by the way why would you publicly say that the market softened for a player i’m really trying to move no you go the opposite if i got three teams in the mix i’m going to tell the media hey we got we got things i i’m not going to say anything i’m not going to allude that the market’s hot and we’re but why would i tell my why would i tell my competitor you know the teams that’s trying to get bombard hey the market’s off oh oh really so maybe i don’t have to give you as much now for for bone bar no maybe i want to drum up interest from vegas maybe i want to drum up interest from from la right and and have them pay me what i’m really looking for and maybe they sweeten the deal enough where it’s over the top the other thing i’m seeing matt if you look at the draft yesterday right emphasis on two-way players emphasis on defense emphasis on size things like that where you know florida the copycat league like everybody wants to be florida now right they they want to have that kind of team that’s nasty etc and i think that’s like for example you know nicholas hey on the on the knights i mean he’s a defenseman i would love on the savers 66 blocks shots all over the place hits everything i heard ellie freeman said if or was it i think it was drager said if the sabres want to trade byron for hg we got to get more than byron to get nicholas h
oh and i’m sure
that that tells you the prices of these these type of players have really gone up like i think the league is understanding how important those players are and i think the prices have just increased you know at a very high rate now i’m okay with doing that believe it or not like you said like if we could i mean our defensive group would be amazing if you had got nicholas hey we’ll have everything that we need and we’ll improve our defense dramatically with him and kerling but
well and i think i i think the nick heg stuff was being talked about before they got they got kesser kessle ring um
you know so i i mean it i just i really don’t think that they’re going to have another defenseman come in especially aftering after uh drafting uh mka um so i think that they’re done on the defensive side i think that um
it’s it’s either going to be like you and i talked about last night on the when i was driving home and in the space that you had
i truly think it’s going to be dene samson um power um power and kessle ring and then uh clif clifton and and uh jacob docker so and the reason why i think that is you saw what dene did with byum to kind of um cover up some of those deficiencies that byum had he’s going to do the same thing with with samson and we know that we know that that’s when that’s when samuelson played his best hockey was with dene so why not put him there and just leave him there and let him play his defensive style game he doesn’t have to pick up the puck and carry it he can just hit people and and get the puck out of the zone you need to play that defensive style hockey in today’s nhl yes scoring is is is up but also during the regular season it feels like scoring’s at a premium also so it is
you have to you have to kind of find a way to if you’re going to play in these one- nothing 2-1 3-2 games you have to find a way to be the one on the lower end of the goal side um as far as defense goes you obviously the name of the game is score score more than the other team right but
if you’re playing a defensive style hockey and you’re giving up five goals there’s something wrong yep absolutely and and part of that part of that goes to upl so i can’t i i’m super excited for july 1st to see if the sabres bring in a a goalender to compete with upl because i again i’m still going to sit here and say that levi needs one more year in um in rochester but i did want to get to i did want to before uh before we kind of move on more to you know the draft and things like that i did want to i did want to get to ryan’s uh ryan’s question
um
you know and again thank you ryan um i i i know you’re you’re new to the channel and stuff like that but thank you so much for hopping on um thank you
i hey depending on what they get for brian rust or if they if they that’s still a thing i would be ecstatic because i think he’s that great you know maybe second or third line type player you could put him with zucker and you know he would he would um
he would improve this team and i can see why the sabres covet brian rust
yep and you know what else matt he’s he’s the kind of winger that you could you know how we talk about that owen power needs like an adult next to him like a guy like kesserling like maybe someone that could settle him down during a game kind of allow him to play his game i look at the same with a guy like zack benson right zach benson
and even benson even jack win
put a put a brian rust with him a 32-y old vet that’s won a lot of hockey games in this league that can say hey jack just settle down we’re going to be okay here or you know maybe be that extra coach you know to kind of develop a guy like like a like a a benson or like a quinn right so i also like ricard raquel i now i know he’s going to cost more if the penguins you move him but again the savers need to be aggressive here as we know um i think there’s opportunities like there’s not a lot of options for the sabres to pick from now raquel has a no tra he he has a no movement clause where brian rust does not so brian rust is 33 he could play both wings he makes 5 million for the next three years sabres can absorb that that’s really not an issue we don’t have to worry about it so i don’t think he’ll cost as much but it would be a nice addition will he score 70 points with us probably not maybe 60 you could put him even with tage matt you could put him on the top line at times he’s a guy you can kind of move around right and be comfortable uh with that so we we’ll we’ll see what what happens
well and that’s that’s that’s the thing with with with uh with rust is he’s that guy that’s going to score a short-handed goal every once in a while he’s the guy that’s going to be on that that um that second power play and scoring you know scoring the the anywhere from the the pretty goal to the to the um to the garbage goal he’s going to be a guy that is really what this team needs um
we we saw they needed a jason zucker type player last year and nobody realiz like we all realized we needed that type of player but it wasn’t it wasn’t um it i thought it ended on july 1st um uh cuz uh ryan just brought that up in in the in the chat i thought
has a no trade i thought i thought it
i didn’t see it i didn’t see it on
i thought it ended i thought it ended on july 1st not began on july 1
i’m not 100% sure i’d have to look that up but
we’ll have to validate that but good call out because he may or may not i didn’t see it on the site on puckedia but you never know sometimes maybe it is the other way so but that’s
and that might be why you didn’t see it on puck pedias maybe they removed it because it is coming off on july 1st
maybe um i know i saw that from uh from a couple sabers discussions discussions on twitter last night um when i was when i was falling asleep so maybe maybe i did uh nope uh thank you ryan it does end on uh that’s what i thought it ends on ends on july 1st so on july 1st they can they can acquire him and they and he has no say in where he goes
um which is which is a a thing so uh you know it could i think that they can if they if they agree to something with the penguins they can go to russ and be like “hey do you want to wait like four days or do you want to just like wave it now?” like um
absolutely
but i i would i would enjoy uh having brian rest i love watching him play with the penguins um and as as you know as many people know on on on here from talking bills and sabres my second teams are the penguins and the um and the steelers so uh you know because i grew up with them that’s who i grew up with
my sympathies to die no i’m kidding i’m just joking i got i got dj
hey i i got to watch um the uh two the the two of the greatest players to ever play the game so in in lemieux and yagger and then even even with the savers la fontaine and mo gilni and holy [ __ ] [ __ ] finally alexander mcgillni
alexander mgillny is going into the hall of fame and it is about and i apologize for my language but it is about [ __ ] time
yes
i’m sorry like there is no reason that he should have been almost snubbed yep
for the for 14 years
one of the most exciting players i ever watched i he was just dynamite he was you know
even though even though it was um uh i can’t remember his name from the red wings um uh they ca no no no no they came over from uh like was the first defector of um or yeah fatisoft so he was the first like defector mogilli mgildy was like that second defective that came over
and they had to uh i think it was jerry mian and don loose they basically had to hide moilnney in a hotel and then smuggle him out of out of russia to get him to come to buffalo and for him to um for him to play and be as good of a hockey player as he was and on top of that
as much as i hated seeing the sabres trade him
we got pek out of the deal we got jay mcke drafted that year out of the deal we got you know so it’s not like it’s not like we didn’t get anything for him we got one of the better players in in in in the sabres history in in uh in michael pek
um
well we were building a hockey team and that you know what’s weird is that kind of i know it’s not the same thing not not a onetoone comparison right but burka is is a guy that he scores a lot right but i feel like he’s a little bit of a one-trick pony right he but he’s a good five on five right
but with kesserling and don i feel like what is the common thing we’re seeing here kesserling and don by the way they’re going to roommate together they’re supposedly close and they’re going to be together so it sounds like these guys are pretty excited about coming to buffalo right i think don’s going to get an opportunity comes from a great pedigree his dad even murka who he took i mean i listen to his comments he sounds like my kind of player right he
he wants to be here he wants to he said “i’m excited to bring buffalo back to glory.” like i like the things he’s saying said he’s a great teammate right those i like this little change from the sabres right now that they’re
i mean what else is he supposed to say like i mean what else is he supposed to say that
and i get that too but what else is he supposed to say like you know i’m going to be here until i’m 20 i’m going to be here until i’m 27 years old at minimum i shut my mouth
and i’ll be gone then i’ll and i’ll request a trade in 2032 no i’m kidding but a player comparison that i did i did some scouting i did watch some videos would you sign up for a colton peno type defenseman that seems to be his comparison not flashy offensively he’s not going to be a big offensive player don’t expect 70 80 points from this guy but very responsible defensively not incredibly physical but phys he has some physicality right he covers a lot of ground he’s got that long he’s like a cage on on on the defense like he covers you know who else you know who else he reminds me of
who’s that
um and it’ll actually um is is the penguins defenseman ryan ryan greaves
yes yep even a little bit of time
i was calling for him last year yeah i was calling for him last year when when he was free too yeah and that’s listen i think i think the sabres could we could debate who they could have taken i right-handed defenseman obviously are harder to find right it’s a but this kid is only he just turned 17 man that’s the other thing too he’s a year behind
some of these guys that are 18 so he’s just he’s a guy you just put away we’ll see you in three years like we’re he’s not going to be around so
yeah i mean that’s one of the things that like i saw i saw aj post something last night aj sapolski um good friend good friend of the uh the network and uh shout out to him but um he said i um
let me let me kind of read it here real quickly so give me one second i’ll pull it up
right there uh if uh redeem murka is the guy to bring the sabres back to glory so be it welcome to buffalo sir and i i quoted or i said in three or four years maybe he is very talented but very raw the bad man will be gone by then as in kevin adams will be gone by then so i i mean it’s it sucks but you know i mean you kevin adams i i don’t think i think it more goes to the simple fact that he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing with his job i don’t think he knows what either that or he has he has no fear of terry pigula because of whatever whatever pictures or
or whatever pictures he has on on on terry piguller or whatever incriminating evidence or
hey matt let me let me give you let me give you some examples we’ve seen some trades in the league recently do you ever see tweets from like the florida panthers that their owner has to sign off on a trade before it’s going to happen no what i mean is remember did you remember when took a traded oh poula gave to sign off why i mean i just watched the movie giraffe day on netflix this week right remember when kevin coer makes that deal does does he ask the owner
the owner wants pancake eating [ __ ]
exactly one of the best lines ever right i mean it’s a great movie right you know and uh but you know it’s it goes to show you like you’re the gm like he should have autonomy to like make that’s his job to make the team better right why does he have to sign off on every trade i don’t i don’t like
here’s the thing i don’t i don’t think it’s a i think that the media made much more of that than anything else um and i i honestly think that everybody thinks that and we do it all the time i think everybody thinks that they know more than the people that are in charge of the buffalo sabres we did it with the bills too when when it wasn’t brandon bean and sean mcderman all i’m saying is i think that they are trying to put the sabres in a bad light and this is only this is only personal preference or personal feeling or anything like that but i think that a lot of those guys are um
whether it’s because adams rubs them the wrong way in press conferences or whether he just doesn’t give them information and they they’d like to see him out as well i don’t know i i honestly don’t know i don’t know what to tell what to say to that but i just feel like with all this stuff out i think that they’re trying to put the sabres almost in like a bad light or bad situation if that makes sense
um whereas i don’t think it was hey i need to get terry pigula’s permission to make a trade it’s just i wanted to make sure that he was okay trading jj purka because um you know i’m gonna do it anyways or i want to get his input on you know hey i have these five deals in place which which should i go with or kind of just kind of bouncing things off of because you kind of do that in any job like whether you’re a a salesperson or a store manager assistant store manager district manager anything like that you always have that that resource to kind of b bounce something off of and i think that kind of goes back to what you and i have been calling for
is that director of hockey ops
so that he has somebody to bounce it off of so he can he can you know and i said last week that i truly feel that what’s going to happen at the end of the season no matter what whether it’s playoffs or not i think that kevin adams is moving up into that director of hockey ops and i think yarmmo is going to be taking over as general manager yeah and that’s the thing like maybe kevin adams does have some good qualities i don’t i don’t think kevin adams is i mean i don’t like him as a general manager personally because of the like even when they ask
he doesn’t know what the [ __ ] he’s doing he doesn’t know what the [ __ ] he’s doing
yeah some uh some famous person said that recently but anyway but um it’s just it’s just the snarkiness and the smuggness that come across with adams like even last night they asked him about purka and you know what the players want out and he just goes it’s just the way he is like just just acknowledge that there’s a problem here say hey we’ve had a problem here in the past and and tell the fans like hey we’re working hard towards this thing and we’re going to change that culture we’re going to flip that script right you know how you get those while
you know how you get those those questions and things to stop and people to stop when
you’ve now been in a playoff drought for four 14 years yes you’ve only been here five
stop being an [ __ ] and stop talking out of both sides of your mouth and just be upfront and honest hey we’re trying to make the team better
hey we’re trying to make if you have to say the same thing over and over again hey we gota you know fine don’t sit there and say it goes back to the palm trees and taxes thing it goes back to h you know the smuggness on his face during that press conference it goes back to him him not being ready or what what perceived to be like hey
i’m not doing my job everybody else is doing it for me hey i’m just going to sit up here and talk to the media
yep yeah it’s just a it’s just the tone it’s the and you know and listen if you don’t think other agents and players see that don’t don’t kid yourself because they do right like they want to play for there’s just go watch other gm’s press conferences or president’s press conference is way different it it’s just the sabres like to put this guy always in front of the camera like you said we need a present we need someone with experience to go up there let kevin m do his job behind the scenes i don’t need to hear from him every minute
and on top of that too yeah on top of that too i i want to say this about um about uh um the whistle and those two like i’m sorry like who the [ __ ] cares if he’s out until 4:00 in the morning who cares they don’t have practice until 11:00 in the morning they don’t have you know practice until or they don’t have a game until that night they don’t have i don’t give a [ __ ] as long as he’s not meeting let him be let him be 23 years old because andrew peters you’re putting [ __ ] up your goddamn nose at 23 when you were in this with the buffalo sabres
like i’m sorry like i’m sorry like oh what’s he gonna do come find me and beat me hey i’ll give you my address message me on twitter you can come show up we can go meet at a bar somewhere you’re an absolute garbage human being for talking down to a 23-y old kid because you think you’re a you think you’re you’re you’re above that
um we could tell some stories we could tell some stories because i know a lot of the same people you know and and if you want to hear those stories so
i didn’t mind yeah i didn’t mind their assessment of the trade and the reasons that they liked it right but when it got a little personal i’m like okay that’s that’s a little much right we don’t need to go down there right in terms of okay kesling fits a need right and i like what rey said about the reasons why it it was a good move and josh stone
absolutely absolutely perfectly understand that
stick cocky on that though you have to go too over the top on that i mean but i listen there are times i appreciate their brutal honesty right in terms of sometimes we need to hear these things right in terms of management things like that but that you know i in terms of
let a let a kid be a kid he’s 23 years old if he enjoys bartending on his time off and and kind of blowing off steam like that let him let him stop being an [ __ ] stop being an [ __ ] and start stop talking down to him
i went out to 4 in the morning quite a bit when i was 23 so i’ll just leave that there i’m sure a lot of us may have so right so yeah i get that and again as long as it wasn’t impacting the the team on a day-by-day basis so that’s but anyway but that’s that’s that but so another nugget from kevin m’s press conference last night is that he did mention that he may feel comfortable going with bow and byron going into the season if he doesn’t get the right deal i know it’s not what we want to hear but i would kind of agree if it’s if if the trades are just that bad then i guess i’m okay with it
hey and i’m i’m the same i’m in the same way i i like if they go into the season with bow and byron
do you think
fine you’re going to need to move somebody else because clearly you have eight defenseman right now
and you want to carry you you want to carry seven on the team uh like on the actual buffalo sabres
so you’re going to either need to move connor clifton you’re going to either need to move uh uh uh samuelson and find a way to sign bowen byum if that’s the way you want to go but you have to make the decision you can’t go into the season um like and and that’s fine if if you wanna if you want to wave by uh uh not byum um uh bryson and send him down to the miners fine i get it cool
yep
you know but until you trade until you trade byum okay fine i get it he comes in and plays but what’s going to happen if he comes in and
you know the first 30 games of the season he has like 38 points what do you do at that point who are you trading at that point are you trading by him or are you trying to sign him
yep that’s my it’s a double-edged sword it’s it truly is a double-edged sword absolutely uh there is not i mean even looking at the free agents right i mean you have mitch martin obviously mitch is gonna mitch is going to command a ridiculous amount of money because there’s really not much after him by the way did you see tvaris took four something you see his contract with toron i commend i gotta say i gotta commend tvaris for that he
did you hear what he said not exactly
he said “hey i might have left some money on the table but i want to stay i want to stay in my hometown i want to stay with my hometown dean i want to
you know.” yeah
[ __ ] like great great
yeah i commend him for that he’s he’s a toronto kid through and through he’s always wanted to be there so good for him eers would you want to pursue nikolai eers now we do need a left winger our left wing depth is a little questionable right now so
i mean he would it it it depends on what we do between now and july 1st but yes i would love nikolai eers ellers steelers what however say his name he literally is just
the table yeah i mean a lot of guys he’s literally
he’s literally coming from the number one team in the nhl last year like yeah
obviously obviously florida won the cup i get that but they were what they were fourth or fifth
or even sixth
um in the standings and um i mean you had had somebody that was playing for the number one team in hockey last year he they know he he’s coming from a place that knows how to win he’s got he’s got that little bit of scoring touch to him um he’s not going to be your 4050 goal scorer but
he’s he’s probably 25 to 30
um regularly
he could pop 40 for you but
yep yeah absolutely and the thing is you know a lot of what the sabres are looking for is not going to come in free agency and the trades you know another thing that emily kaplan said last night too is that a lot of teams are not interested in getting picks and prospects back prospects are one of the the the strengths that the sabres have that they can offer in a deal for a guy like a kyu for a guy like but there’s still matt there’s still chatter out there about jason robertson now
in that case that’s the one interesting guy because dallas fars are going to want prospects in that deal matt they’re not going to want guys with term they’re going to want
like let’s say they’re really interested in mitch mner right they could actually get him and then they’re going to have to trade jason robinson i mean that could happen right
so in that case i’m backing the truck up i’ll i’ll trade four big pieces for jason robinson in a heartbeat if i’m the sabres
right then we’re a better hockey team today were significantly better today
i mean like i would trade them bum i would trade them um you know if they wanted helenius i would trade him that um i i would um you know i would include a protected 2026 first round pick um i would also include i would include something else like like that’s that’s your four pieces and i think something like that gets gets done um you know gets you done for jason robertson
even if we got to take another contract from them or something like make it happen like let’s you know let’s get aggressive here i’d rather them go down swinging like that than kind of kick around say “oh let’s just go get you know a third fourth liner.” and you know i ve look at vegas vegas has that
f them pick kind of mentality they just go out there and get everybody i mean that’s what they do
yeah it’s f them picks f them picks f them money like like they’re just throwing at everybody
we can weaponize our cap space with the knights too listen go hard after tomas hurdle he’s out now he’s got a no trade but he’s a he would be a nice addition to this team you could move way you know he he if you get him
if they need to sign mitch martyr we just again we’re a better hockey team today than we were yesterday that’s
well and that’s that’s how you improve that’s how you yeah that’s how you improve you weaponize your salary cap you weaponize uh your draft picks your draft capital you have eight picks today mhm
why are we picking somebody from the fifth round that’s going to be here maybe in six years
maybe in four years like
yep absolutely and today is really about organizational depth right it’s really hard to to uh project you know what these players are going to be by the way the tweet of the day this morning matt speaking in the draft don’t forget folks from ryan kennedy from thn day two of the draft starts at noon eastern today and runs until mid august ah that that was that’s a drop the mic tweet right there that’s for as speaking of the four the four and a half hour cringy weird production known as the first round last night four and a half hours for for the first round matt what are we doing right and you had multiple teams making picks
yeah pittsburgh had four first round picks
now crystal tang’s son stole the show last night he was great by the way i love that kid like that was really cool
but and of course you know gdro’s what you know widow coming out her way that was awesome too i mean there were some good moments but it’s just the league just has to understand like you got to keep things moving you gotta right it’s just they’re trying to do all this dog and pony show stuff and it the tech they were having technical issues with everybody last night it was just it was just a weird production that i hope they scrap going into next year but we’ll see
yeah i did not like the decentralized draft i i i caught some of it
um you know uh on the end of it when i got home um
i mean clearly it start clearly it started at 8 o’clock
and i didn’t get home until about 11:30 and it was still on like mhm
like i i get it the first round takes a little bit because you’re you’re waiting for guys to come out of the crowd and come down and you know have teams up on the podium and shaking their hand giving the jerseys and but they’re still they’re not holding off the draft picks to do that
or the like it’s still moving on so like after after uh the first overall pick you have x amount of time on the clock that time is still rolling even though they’re they have to get to every and it just makes makes everything go a lot quicker so
um just
i don’t know i mean it just it was a weird night it was a weird
yeah the stage was the stage was really nice though i like the stage i like the the that like there’s some things that i did like about it but overall just the the the weird interviews and for every player i didn’t think i think chad said it best last night you know after the first couple picks you know do we really need to have every single player no maybe maybe at that point just you know let let the get the players off stage maybe bring some of the gms in a little bit here and there in between picks to talk about the picks they made like it’s just it it was a little too much so i agree i mean i hear
the one yeah the the one who was the one megan megan chakra she took a little shot at our pick last night she said the sabres reached and this and that and um yeah maybe a little bit but that that was the one team that got a little shot last night was the sabres of course so
i mean who cares i i like again like i said i don’t care i don’t think they’re taking it i don’t think they’re taking a shot at the savers i don’t think they’re taking a shot at at target
yeah where do you
i don’t think it’s the fan i think it’s i think a lot of these guy and it it just brings more credence to what i said that i truly do think it’s like um the outside media is trying to take shots because something happened with kevin adams where they’re they just are not with them right now or it’s either that or they they just want to see the savers be good for for themselves because when when buffalo is good at hockey it’s good for it’s good business um the outside media it gets it’s convenient to take shots at the savers now it’s easy they’ve earned right it’s like in i know it’s you know in basketball right for the longest time the knicks were a disgrace i’m a knicks fan right and even when the knicks were starting to make really good moves the outside media was still
taking shots at the knicks over and over again well wait a minute they’re they’re doing things way different now right so what i mean is those stigmas take a long time to get rid of right like i mean if florida every move florida makes now is great right why because they’re two-time stanley cup champions right they they’re smart right but if the sabres make the same moves they’re like “oh what are they doing that for?” because they’ve earned that reputation yeah and i see some saber fans out there well it’s hard for the sabres to trade for players why well it’s not the market do the bills have a hard time attracting players right now matt in the same market
no
why why same owner
same city same weather right
they win
they win and they
what cures everything what cures it all winning mhm yep you know a good culture which they’ve created they have a general manager who knows what he’s doing he’s a great i would love to play for brandon bean who wouldn’t yeah yeah i mean that’s that that’s truly the the so like kind of what do you expect to happen not only today but between today and up until july 1 and then also what do you expect to happen between today and the day that i said that i will make my decision whether i’m in or out on the on kevin adams uh experience for the year on july on july 22nd
and i but i like what you said we still got to give this a month right the whole burka signing i know right now the optics don’t look great
right
but like we said what if the sabres do get a jordan kaiu what if they do get you know another top six forward and then they’ve added some grit and some guys that want to be here and we make another move or two and then you’re like okay that i can i can i could sign off on this right like the sabres became a better team today so what do i think’s going to happen i think prepare to be a little underwhelmed folks i think unless the savers are willing to really get aggressive with the bowen byron situation i you know we we’ve said it how many times have we talked about ellis patterson on this on this podcast right by the way you know ellis patterson can also play left wing by the way just as an fyi he’s not just a center so they can move you know he could be their center but he could be a left winger but are the sabres willing to really knock a team socks off and make that deal are they willing to depart with guys like koulique are they willing to even part with a benson are they willing to part with these guys that it’s going to take to get the big impact guys that we really want this team to get like a jason robertson or a ellis patterson more realistically we’re looking at brian rust we’re looking maybe at jordan kyu potentially maybe a guy from vegas uh you know maybe we weaponize the space there and take one of their veteran wingers i believe they have i’m looking at the knights now because they’re going to need some cap space maybe we get a guy like a barbashef maybe we get a guy uh someone like that you know that oh by the way it’s kind of funny to say the sabres need a left winger victor olson’s an unrestricted free agent i just said that for laughs by the way so you can get you get you chuckling on that one but you know there’s there’s uh the rodiaf uh well they’re going to have to sign him the knights have some big challenges so let’s let’s use our space let’s let’s use it to our advantage this time let’s get somebody in here that could really help the top six that’s what i kind of expect matt it’s going to be i think it’s going to be a surprise move one that we’re not really seeing right now on the surface that that might happen for the sabres who that is i am not 100% sure right at this moment
yeah and i mean i i i’m going to bring up what real deal said here i mean this isn’t exactly what kevin adams said but we did touch it on the on it a little bit in a little bit ago um
yeah is the fact that you know he he basically said that byron isn’t going anywhere unless they get a good deal i truly think that that’s a little bit of um negotiation in the media
um trying to hey you better give us a great deal or we’re not trading him
oh you you we clearly see he’s an rfa he’s he doesn’t have a contract he’s not signed he’s not signing with you you’re not signing him for less than $7 million a year he’s gonna get traded like i said i mean adams came out and said “what are you talking about about this purka stuff there’s nothing to it.” and literally talking out of both sides of his mouth and traded him literally the next day
so you know matt i just wonder if the sabres because of what they’ve created we got to keep saying that right because there’s a lot of apologists out there say “well you know players don’t want to come here.” well why is that right and we got back to they keep they refused to acknowledge the why right and it’s because of kevin adams it’s because of terry pagula and it’s about the lack of but they left $6 million on the table the last five years and then they complained about taxes you can’t do that six million per year six million per year
good good point and i mean you you could have waited on jeff skinner a year and the buyout would have been much better they use it last year and then they don’t use the space so who who can why would kevin adams be so snarky when he himself has addressed the problem but i think we got to be resigned to the fact the savers are going to be under the cap again going into this year they’re going to try to hit on guys like jack quinn right they’re gonna
i mean technically they technically they may spend to the cap because they still got to sign alex tuck to an eight eight or nine million deal that they’re going to have to overpay for him because he’s gonna even though he’s a buffalo sabres fan he’s going to take advantage of that as well he might but he might not but his 80 is going to take advantage of the fact
blame him i i never blame a player for trying to get no
no not at all and if it’s the players it’s if it’s the players um prerogative to be here for you know $4 million rather than you know leaving and going get nate that’s that’s on them too like i get it you know that he feels if he feels that he can win he win here wants to be here because of family and and and and you know because they’re
whatever like cool i get it
i i love alex tuck matt but i’m going to say this here and i know some saber fans are not going to like what i’m gonna say do not be afraid and go back to the florida panthers when they had jonathan hubedo and mckenzie wager and they traded both to get matthew kachchuck and they were getting grilled for it how could you trade a 100point guy for a guy like matthew chuck well let me ask you how how’s that going now any thoughts
they they’ve been ever since they traded ever since they traded hubo they’re two for two if the dallas stars wanted alex tuck in a package for jason robertson if it’s right i i will grind my teeth but i will still do it
because those guys do not grind so hard to get
if it was a one for one deal i would do it in a heartbeat i would
have to give a un top three protected 2026 alex tuck and a good prospect would you do that done yeah i know some saber fans will be like “oh yeah.” and i like i love als but what are we winning with outstuck folks they got
there’s a lot of changes they got to make internally and it’s again it comes down to the simple fact that nobody is untouchable there
even even raspusene if if edmonton calls you up and says “hey we’re going to give give you conor mcdavid and our next four first round picks.” clearly that’s not going to happen and i’m being a little little facicious but if they called you up
and were like “hey we want rasmus dene and you hung up the phone before they even said anything you don’t know what they’re going to offer.” so you’re doing malpractice to your your franchise and your fans if you do not take calls on every single player your yes you have the prerogative to say “no he’s not available.” but you know after they give you the offer but if you’re not at least listening you’re doing you’re not doing your job yep absolutely
oh and i and absolutely i do agree with i i agree with real deal here i trust me he’s literally he’s literally on that like that teeter totter of like almost like that no touch mhm
um i have dene as a as a no touch unless you’re getting but again if you’re getting this super amazing deal okay like if literally if it turned around
player right like
if we turned around and and
we got a uh you know we had a team like um even edmonton or uh you know a west coast team that was like “hey we’re going to give you our next six years first round picks and leave them unprotected for you for rasmus dene.” not saying it’s like not the worst thing in the world but i would i do it probably not i still probably wouldn’t do it but
again
you know that that means you go into the next six years of drafts with two unprotected draft picks
that could next year could potentially turn into gavin mckenna
yep
like
yep yep absolutely yes so and the other thing is you know just the one thing about
about uh tuck like we could count in our hands how many guys i would trade tuck for it’s very very specific
adams has to make a buy trade for k
yeah i i agree james and welcome james if you haven’t been here i don’t not sure if you’ve been here or not but um i agree like montre and montreal i’ll tell you what i mean they’re building a monster there i love what they’re doing hate to say it but that’s just
could you imagine if their final piece was to to acquire sydney crosby from the penguins
yep now george lorac did send that tweet out last night nathan mckinnon said fake
i know i know they came and pat bristen or bryson or however you say his name uh crosby’s agent said there’s really nothing to it either to it but
but
but who’s to say that these guys just aren’t like you know again it it’s it’s literally like lying season
mhm it is it really really is i mean and there’s still and yeah but i i agree i would love to get kyu here now the one thing about kyro i’ve heard is that he has some defensive deficiencies as well sounds familiar sounds like a guy we just shipped to utah right so i don’t think he fixes everything but jordan kyu definitely again you could put him on that top line with taage we got a very strong you could even put benson on the left and you can really help his development as well and then i got a excellent first line then i got tuck on the second line second line center
that’s going to be the the pain point i don’t think koulique is ready to be a second line center yet
he was playing first line center last year like we can’t sit here and say he’s not ready i guess you’re right i guess yeah i just don’t i’m not expecting miracles out of him just yet
if you don’t do anything else your center spine is josh norris koulique you still got to sign mloud and then you got um who is the fourth line center um for the sabres
interesting i i guess would it be payton krebs would it be krabs
yeah it’d be krebs yeah it would be krebs now this is interesting what james said this might make me wonder does adams really even want jordan cyro like we want jordan kyro but maybe adams doesn’t want jordan kyro
well and that comes down to it i get the fact
we got josh i’m sorry we got josh norris i keep forgetting
yeah i just said that i just said that yeah i’m sorry
you know what i think i need more of this it’s it’s it’s 8:00 in the morning here so
that’s okay hey that’s the that’s the back and forth we got going so we’re good um you know you’re you’re picking up my words and i’m i’m helping you with the energy so um
but no in in all seriousness like i
i just almost wonder if it was like “hey we’ll give you kyu for purka.” not good enough for me not it would have to it would have to been you know their first round pick or a pro another player because purka is better than kyu i’m sorry i i’m going to sit here today and say purka is going to be a better player than jordan kyu if not already is
what’s the name of the game what’s the name of the game
what do you have to do in the nhl
score
score goals
oh kyle
purka purka will go in and as he continues to develop he is going to be a 35 to 40 goal scorer he’s not going to be that 50 to 60 goal scorer but he’s going
he’s going to be a 35 to 40 goal scorer huh i root 36 31 and 37 the last three years
i understand that but you got to remember also coming into this team where’s he slot coming into this the buffalo sabres not playing he’s not going he’s not staying on on st louis and getting th that that team and that defense that they have over there and everything else with them that
you know well what’s interesting is he’s
and i get that i get that as well like if they can go get jordan kyu
if they can get jordan kyu for byum hey more power to them i think that that is the the even trade i just think that purka was a little bit better and if they didn’t want to do anything more than one for one
i i don’t think that that was that would have been a good trade person
i mean kai kyro is listed as a right winger on pipedia now if he doesn’t play center
where do you put him you got tage there already right
well and that’s fine i think i think taage you can put on yeah i think you could put tage on either side i i know that um i know his natural position is either center or right wing but
i think you could put center right yeah yeah you could put him at center and and have josh norris slide down into the second line center or um you know or or you put or you put paige on the left wing and it’s not you know it left wing is leftwing like i get it it’s it’s whatever you know i just don’t know what else to say about it like because i think that some of these guys that have the position
um flexibility like like tae thompson who can play across all three of the top line you could throw him at left wing and he’d still be doing the same thing and he do it you know because it’s just it’s it’s not necessarily you’re not sitting playing oh you only have this side and you only have this side and you have the center that’s not hockey anymore that’s not hockey anymore you’re always constantly moving you’re always constantly doing this and always constantly cycling the puck and always constantly moving everybody around and sliding from here to here just because you’re playing you’re set you’re you start on the right wing doesn’t mean that you can’t go to the left wing or it doesn’t mean if you play on the left wing it doesn’t mean you can’t go to the right wing what
we can’t sit here and and worry about that
100% we h we have to we have to worry about getting to the playoffs and winning the stanley cup and first things first you got to win games during the regular season let you just give give uh lindy the players that he wants because you clearly won’t give him the coaching staff that he wants so give him the players that he wants and and see what happens and james no he will not he will not make the he will not make the team day one he is 17 years old he needs he needs development he will not be in the nhl i would say probably for three years
yeah 17 he just turned se that that’s the other thing too like at minimum i would say two years now remember tyler myers made a he was picked around the same area he was picked 12th by the savers he he came into the league a lot quicker than we all thought
but i think myers was a little more developed at that time and meyers was more of a need meyers was more of a need they needed tyler myers to come in
but also too remember who you had on that team to help develop
tyler myers you had tinder you had uh um uh uh um uh ludman you had um um
um why christian airhoff you had newman in like all those guys were sitting there to be able to what do you got right now you gonna you’re gonna let um you gonna let matias samuelson develop murka
no like please for the love of god no
i don’t want matias samson develop anybody on this roster i want matias samson with his buddy jason botel in seattle you know that was the other thing the one thing about murka i was surprised seattle didn’t take him i was stunned actually
because seattle’s taken a lot of centers and then they took another center at eight
last night
i i know i i know was really surprised and then at that point i said “oh i think we’re taking america.” that’s exactly what i said to myself matt i said “here we go.” right
i as soon as as soon as i saw philly take porter martone i’m like “what the fuck?”
yep and supposedly i’ve heard whispers “the sabres were enamored with jake o’brien who the who the the kraken took it eight.”
so maybe that was their thought now the guy that got picked behind him the queen is kind of who was on board with too by the way was that one not one of the coolest picks of the draft by the way
which one
mcqueen roger mcqueen gets drafted by the ducks the ducks put him on a on a helicopter fly him to anaheim go to disneyland and he posed with the lightning mcqueen cars that’s phenomenal like you could for the ducks like that was that was beautiful you know what my favorite picture of last night was
what’s that
was seeing charlie conway and uh uh connie maro clearly not their real names but um taking a p like taking a picture together um
you know at this point at this point in life like that’s just that was a cool thing to see
um
y absolutely and that is 100% true james i 100% agree with that mone would have been a saber if adams had had armstrong to swap four and nine and that is the thing that i think would have been the the overthetop to get
to do a pur to do a purka move like that would have been like because you’re basically trading purka and mertka for martone and kyru which are you taking
i’ll take mau and kyu please that that’s exactly what i’m saying though is is um even even still you if it’s if it’s not martone brady martin goes the next pick at five are you taking brady mart are you taking brady martin and and kyu over over purka absolutely so why was that trade not made
yeah that’s the part of the purka trade if we would have swapped four for nine even if we had to give utah another second round pick i would have been i would have felt a little better about that deal okay we moved up five spots right we got picked four but i think that move from nine to four was pretty rich because this draft isn’t topheavy it there’s a lot of quality between five and 20 it’s a better draft than than i think most a lot of outsiders they they i don’t want to say they trashed it but there were another guy that i kind of wanted for the sabres was carter bear i detroit got a steal of 13 i liked him a lot left winger and that’s something we need in the pipeline a little bit i thought that would have been a good pick too but i mean again i’m okay with the pick the sabres made that’s how i feel i just
i i like murka i like murka i yeah i like murka i think he’s going to be a good nhler but
the thing that we were saying and the thing that we’ve been saying
is kevin adams needs to have urgency he needs to make this team better now it’s been 14 years you’re going into year six so that tells me that i’m probably correct in saying the fact that adams is probably moving up and yarma is probably taking over for him next year no matter what happens or kevin adams is not worried whatsoever about his job because pigoula is not going to fire him bec like and that’s that kind of you know that kind of like kind of hurts this morning you know thinking that after this week after because like i said i was on a work trip so i really didn’t have time to you know sit down and think about like how i actually feel about the fact that kevin adams is not afraid for his job
yep yeah it doesn’t feel that way and that’s the part now listen i need him to operate from strength right essentially like i want him to be a confident general manager yep and this is i you know james is bringing some great points i mean it’s the little things that matter with kevin adams and i think that’s where sometimes like we you know we trade a second round pick for beck malenstein right malstein’s a decent player but second round pick you know it it’s just it’s just some little details that that bother me with adams like how they’re paying some of these third fourth line guys all this money four million for this guy 2 million for this guy the little details matter they add up right you can save a million here a million there maybe they could take a run at a nicollay and feel comfortable doing that now maybe they can because of all those little errors that kevin adams is making along the way
that’s yeah
that’s really the part that that bothers me the most so
want to ask you matt do we get a bow and buy trade by the end of the week today or tomorrow do do we get one today yes or no
today no um i would i will i will say by my preconceived date of my birthday
a birthday match
yep
i think that i think that bow and byum will have been traded by that point i honestly think what’s going to happen is i think that the savers are going to go into free agency with him
and try and sign whatever player and if they don’t if they get that player then they’ll they’ll move bow and byron because they don’t aren’t aren’t required to hold on to you know x to go get y or whatever so if they go get um we’ll answer that in a second we’ll answer that in a second
oh okay all right yes
but um yeah and we’ll we’ll answer that and then uh then close out the show but i i think that uh uh i think a bowen byron trade gets done um within the next two weeks um honestly um just more of a a gut feeling because you you know i don’t i think the sabres are going to find that nobody wants to sign here i think
i think you have to get it done you have to get it done before july 1st and i’ll tell you why after teams go through free agency after they go through trades those that those cap rooms you know the cap spaces dry up fast and then there’s lack of opportunities got to get it done now you got to push it you know i want to see adams push it on that so and i agree with james i want i i want to i want to swing big i want i want robertson i want the savers i want to hear at least i want to see a elliot freriedman tweet savers pushing hard for jason robertson that’s i just want to see it like push it let’s let’s get this fan base excited this fan base deserves it
move the chips to the middle and go all in on your job like
let’s do it let’s do it so do you want to circle back
go ahead josh’s question does that include players only or non-players that’s a very big caveat to this i would say because we all know who would be the number one legend if it’s not if it’s not restricted to players so we’ll wait for him to we’ll wait for him to answer that but um so
going back to what do you expect to happen not only today but let’s say the first few days of free agency this week i don’t expect the savers to be majorly active in for free agency in terms of swinging for eers or of course mitch martin i think the mitch martin dream is over i i unfortunately don’t
i still would love to hear it madam with you on that i i would love to see it i think the trade route is something that we’re going to have to see but again just like you know and again i don’t take everything emily kaplan says is gold but i thought her point was interesting about how teams just aren’t interested as much to get prospects and picks and i think that kind of limits on what we can do and what we’re trying to do because we don’t want to trade
an alex to get what we want yeah we want to keep those players and everybody wants to keep their players so it’s going to be it’s going to be tough um by the way aaa is coming up with some great great comments by the way for the uh wonderful troll job a aaa like wonderful troll job got it um anyway but yes
anyway
i would say byum to i’m gonna predict bow and byum but you know i want i still come back to the kings man and i feel like the kings are a team that likes to swing big and i still look at jordan spence who’s a 24 year old right-handed shot that gives us i mean that would be another nice guy to have in the pipeline for the kings i don’t know if they really have the forwards that we’re looking for i mean quinton biffield we don’t have the the chips to get him uh maybe a trevor moore who’s a good left winger right winger he’s he’s a good point producer
maybe he could swing a deal like that um but maybe i just unless you get like a guy like jordan spence again swinging hard for a big winger
um so and that would be my expectation man how about you what’s your expectation
i i expect i expect one mediumsiz free agency or free agent um i expect the bow and byum trade to be done um i think that you might see some smaller little signings um you know the kevin adams style signings the the smaller guys um and i don’t mean short or small guys i mean
you know moneywise the you know the guys that fill in your bottom whatever um but i don’t
i don’t think that he’s going to go to the kings i don’t see the forwards there that because at this point you don’t need any more defenseman just like we talked about they have se they have seven defenseman right now i understand defense is a big but you already you just draft drafted murka you have i know there isn’t like major guys coming up from the ahl but um the the one guy that we always talk about um what what’s his name um from from rochester um why can i not why am i drawing a blank from him um so isaac rosen
no uh hold on what position are we talking defense defense yeah defense nav
oh oh yeah naver yes and i like him quite a bit there’s uh yeah uh there’s kamarov and there’s also novacov
noac that’s yeah that’s
kamarov’s the right-handed guy he’s a right-handed shot and
which is fine like like i get that you know but i think that we have enough of that stuff in enough defense in the pipeline yeah where
jordan spence is only going to be yes he might fit right in and might play in the top six but you already have your top six in there and we also heard we also heard that they’re not going to buy out samuelson that that that ship is sailed so what it comes down to is you already have you have your top six your your third line is probably clifton and jbd your second line is keserling and uh owen power and your your first line is dene and samuelson like and that’s that’s it like that’s your sixth and then bryson is going to be your seventh defenseman um if i still wonder if if there is a tree with seattle out there involving matias samuelson uh
i don’t know
you know to pay them a little bit and get a guy like a i would love to see them get like a jared mccann i that would be
but you’re not going to you’re not going to get jared macccan for uh uh matias samuelson i’m sorry
oh no i have to pay more for sure
oh absolutely
i’m willing to do that if they want prospects or picks
but i i fully expect the bowen byron trade to be done this week um i expect a mediumsiz free agent um maybe russ how about this brian
real deal hold on hold on real deal
you did not hear his name in the top six because i don’t think he’s going to be on this team um but i mean i think that that was more of a like we talked about before i think that was more of a um a media tactic press conference tactic to be like “hey up your offers a little bit come on let’s let’s kind of go let’s start you know and it was a little bit more of a um and we we can we can buy out sammy but that’s neither here nor there
um
but i just of course the snarkiness of kevin adams say “oh that’s ridiculous to even consider.” like why is that ridiculous i mean he’s been terrible so and it’s actually not the buyout actually is not bad i think it’s $750,000 for the next 10 years or something like that so it’s not really even that bad uh
this is this is interesting right here if they move anderson now i’ll throw this out there to you you’re looking for a veteran winger maybe a guy that has plays with a little bit of a snarl right has experience he’s a little older his contract isn’t good but what about nasam cadri no thank you
34 years old he he still produces
he’s he’s right there he’s right there with he’s a little bit higher up than brad marshon for me i hate
35 goals 32 assists 67 points last year not too bad
don’t care oh you’re
don’t care i don’t like nazen cadrey i don’t think he’s that great of a player i think he’s in in a in a good circumstance right now in um in calgary um i don’t think that he’d come in here and do anything more than maybe score you know 60 points for the sabres i i just i don’t i don’t think he’s that good of a hockey player um
but what are you gonna do
i’m just i’m throwing it in for a veteran guy that
i wouldn’t be sense
yeah real deal thank you but uh i wouldn’t be like i would if they if they acquired him for like a third round pick today i wouldn’t be like “okay you know uh screw this.” you know whatever
i got another guy for you
okay joel farabby from the from the car and guess where joel farabe was born
syracuse new york yeah
right little bit of a western new york flavor um makes $5 million a year for the next three years it’s a manageable deal he plays both wings you could actually left wing right wing so he kind of fits a need gives them a a not a super veteran guy i mean he’s had a 50point year he last year he was he was hurt it looks like he’s had a couple injuries uh you know he could be a 50-point guy um potentially 40 points 50 point i don’t know just just a thought i mean maybe that again these aren’t the news i know we don’t want to hear but this is you know
yeah i mean i’m i’m good like i’m i’m good on a lot of that stuff i i think that honestly i think that the team itself is just needs those few little tweaks and i think the goalender is one of the tweaks i think that you need a top line uh topline center or left winger um i think your defense is pretty much set right now once you move by them
like i am perfectly happy with the team the way it is if they add that topline center left winger if they add the goalender if that’s what they do and they go in and this is all that they’ve done and they’ve traded bum they traded purka and they add a um top line left winger left or center um and then they add a add a goalender in free agency make a couple little little small sprinkly moves here and there
i’m fine i’m not i’m gonna be okay but if they like i told you if by my birthday on the 22nd if they do not do any of those things if byron is still byum is still stick sticking on this team and it’s a it’s a kevin adams thing not wanting to move him i will probably end up at at at key bank center with some signs little protest
live live hockey hotline matt’s setting up a a a little makeshift uh studio
i will take i will take i will take my folding table i will take my folding table i will take a monitor and i will take my laptop and these these heads
i’m flying in for this i’m flying in
perfect perfect we can go sit in front of the we can go sit in front of the thing i think students got the the 30foot mic cable we’ll we’ll start interviewing people coming out of the building until kevin adams wants to kick us out of there yep anybody from western new york come join us we’ll make it a little party right we’ll we’ll go get some drinks or something
we’ll actually have a party in the plaza we’ll have a party in the plaza to get rid of kevin adams and bring bring the playoffs back to buffalo but in all seriousness um to kind of touch on uh to touch on josh’s question real quickly so we can get out of here um
it he said it could be whoever we want um my my three are going to be um rick generette jelber pero
and la fontaine nope nope i lied
i lied um i lied so it’s going to be um it’s going to be rick generette it’s going to be gilbert perau and dominic cashik i apologize yeah i think that’s that’s tough to argue with that’s uh that’s a great list matt i i you know la fontaine is close right because i he was amazing with i i don’t i i just i gota i can’t keep hashik off the list i was considering ryan miller but not quite there
you know he was extremely popular uh with the buffalo sabres for a long time if it was just on the ice then i might put ryan miller in for john rette if you’re telling me that i have to i can’t use rick then but rick to me is the it’s hard to it’s impossible
he is the he is the buffalo sabres like i’m sorry he’s he’s as much the buffalo sabers as uh norbert and seymour knox yes yes he is yep miss him all the time um i mean like i i think of things like like we talked about the other day like if the sabres were to trade for uh e uh for for lafrenier or uh lafayette from whoever wherever he plays i think he plays for the for the kings um uh or if they trade for lafraier from the rangers like it just you think hey i would have loved to love to hear uh r.j they give those calls on on those players and see what they kind of come up with does he go back to la fontaine and go
you know la franier or something like that or does he bring something back new or like what does he do like and it’s like
you know you kind of think about him all the time so and i so i think he is the the the legend for me
um i think he is the number one legend for the buffalo sabres um but you know and i i i i think you’re i’m 95 99% confident that you agree with me with that um and then a after that your list can change whether you think hashik is you know but i i only put uh jelber perau there because he was the the first draft pick of the buffalo sabres and all the controversy around it and everything like that with the uh with the vancouver conucks with it being um you know number one or number 11 which one is it um so it it was just it you know but then you got dominic dominic ashing is is the third legend for me yep absolutely but yeah so we got day two of the draft starting at here at nine o’clock east pacific time little breakfast with the and by the way there’s a really cool i believe the sabres have a guest doing their second round pick i just saw a tweet i think it’s a kid who may have been paralyzed i think it’s a really great thing like i like those kind of stories still i do that’s cool so that’s cool and tuck it seems like tuck was very involved with him and you know and that that kind of tips me into something matt just seeing this video of him you really think this guy’s ready to leave the sabres after doing stuff like this right now i i don’t think so i think we’re going to get alex tuck signed i think it’s just no i think i think that that’s very important to alex tuck and i think it’s very important to the sabres but
um you know i i apologize i should have waited until you said who was doing it before i rolled my eyes because i i just i i think that was the stupidest thing last night with the google dells yeah um and that was more it’s a little it’s just it’s laish it’s very it’s very it’s just they went to that too often right they went to that well too often you could have mixed a few guests in there for some of the teams maybe but it just got a little ridiculous every team had to have somebody
i mean after you know once the islanders made their first pick right i didn’t need to see a guest how about gary bman make that call for those two picks like let’s move it along let’s let’s keep it going right come on let’s it’s just
yeah it’s ridiculous so anyway but we’ll see hopefully we got some great news coming up good to be seen
keep going no no no keep going
