I like Julius Miettinen but if we pick a C it would mean that theyāre not as high on him as I am.
I think Catton gets nine games and thatās it. Heās not big enough for a game thatās trending toward big and tough. And you donāt come to the NHL to develop and he may be good, but heās not ready.
Iāll be crushed if we trade Eyssimont but if GMJB comes through with a better player, Iāll be pleasantly surprised (but still bummed bc I really like him). I think heād have decent trade value though.
I think I recall SOH saying the org already contacted Karts about a contract and I suspect they have a special āinā with the organization as they seem to be a mouthpiece for the Kraken vs. voices with true independent opinions and are very rarely overly critical or at all critical of the organization. Also they get access to team interviews that you donāt get unless youāre in with Kraken PR. So theyād probably know. I donāt always agree with their takes, but I do think if we keep Karts (who likely doesnāt have much trade value) itās in the 13th/alternate spot.
But I think Hayden is a WAY better choice (I suspect the Kraken are doing a Donato on him however and donāt appreciate his all-around value with talent, grit, size, versatility, and dressing room popularity/contribution to team identity/culture). Theyāll probably keep him in the exact same call-up role he played this year (silver lining: I think he and his wife are really happy in CVF).
GMJB is definitely not done making moves and Elliotte Friedman again said on this morningās 32 Thoughts pod that we could see the team utilize offer sheets, which would make sense since GMJB said or strongly implied on King 5 yesterday that we arenāt going after anyone in FA (good).
Iām reserving judgment on the roster until GMJB is done making moves, and obviously weāll see how Camp goes (maybe Catton does make the roster since we canāt send him to the AHL?)
I don't think Berkly Catton being ready or not ready will have any impact on the decision with the #8 pick. GMJB has already said that he favors going BPA over picking for need, and BPA could very well be a center unless Martone falls. There aren't any consensus prospect rankings that have a defenseman besides Schaffer in the top 10.
I do want to clarify ā I wasn't speaking about you specifically when I said national media is saying that the Kraken have to pick defense. I specifically brought it up because almost every mock and content creator for the last couple of months has specifically mentioned the fact that the Kraken have never picked a defenseman in the first round, and then says it's time to do so because they don't have any blue-chip defensive prospects in the pipeline. I take issue with that, not just because I think we have some decent defensive prospects, but also because most rankings don't have the defenseman anywhere near #8 overall, so why reach for a prospect.
Mrtka has fantastic size, and he's a very good skater ā but the rest of his skills are raw. Like I said before, I would be fine with him at #8, but I think we should (and will) go in a different direction. There are a handful of defensive prospects ranked between #30 and #45 with a ton of size and upside as well, just not as much as Mrtka/Smith/Aitcheson.
As for the Cs ā Martin brings the physicality we're looking for, O'Brien has a good balance of everything, and McQueen brings the size but could stand to get a little more physical and motivated. There is a lot to like about all of these prospects and I think from what this organization wants to do (be more physical, be more competitive, play more net-front, play stricter defense) I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Victor Eklund is worth a mention, because even though he is 5'11", he is all compete all the time, and one of the more physical players in the draft + he has a ton of offensive upside. He'll fill out eventually, and is only 18, so who knows what size he'll play at when he finally debuts.
Not happy with the pick tonight. IMHO, several better options were there. Mrtka, did they even check him out? Eklund, Aitcheson, Smith. But of course, the team wants to build through center š¢
