are joined by the esteemed the ever knowledgeable the always patient Tai Anderson 985 the Sports Up ty how you doing it’s like Fugazi said I am a patient boy i wait I wait I wait and so that’s where I am at uh I am doing wonderful uh how about yourself uh Ty I’m doing well uh it’s still a little odd that we are breaking down uh the end of a Bruins season instead of potentially broadcasting from a random Marriott somewhere across North America it feels odd that the Bruins are not in the playoffs uh the one thing that it’d be one thing if these playoff series in the first round were really riveting kind of suck to be honest with you which is a bummer because I think the first round is usually beyond the fact the Bruins aren’t in it is always like you cover a game you’re on the road you’re at home but there’s always a really fun other first round matchup or two or three this year doesn’t seem to be the case a lot of duds so far which really really sucks and that usually isn’t a good omen of what’s ahead i feel like the first round is always the chaotic start and then it starts building up a little bit more and things kind of even out but not that great to open up uh this playoff run yeah I mean speaking personally it’s always fun when when we cover a playoff series and you know we’ll text each other and be like “Yo you want to watch the game or whatever?” And then now we’re in again as you alluded to you said some random Marriott where flicking the channels trying to figure out which channel ESPN or TNT is in that hotel uh or we go out and eat and watch a game you know I I I I do miss that it’s not It’s not fun to be on the sidelines I must say and you know what i will say this Connor thank god that all the teams with the exception of Ottawa that were down 2 won their game threes because it was looking like we were going to get a round of uh four and five gamers which would not have been great for the league uh not great for the product obviously um but these are to your point these are the elite sports days on the calendar you have baseball just firing up you have NBA and NHL playoffs going on at the same time you have the N the NFL draft if you’re into that i’m not but people are this is the ultimate Masters it’s always a good Yeah April is the best sports month of the year every year bar none in my opinion um and so yeah it’s great to have some series that are looking like they’re kicking into gear here and and potentially becoming series you you want to see that you need to see that I think for the league uh to be in a healthy spot um but yes it is very weird i I’m still not used to it this is the first time obviously the Bruins have missed the playoffs since 2016 um back then 2016 I was uh I was 24 years old um my friends that you know are still my friends uh did not have kids they were not married they did not have homes and so we could just text each other and be like “Hey let’s hang out today.” I don’t have that anymore and what I’m learning Connor is I don’t have many friends the people are my friends but we’re shared our are our our our we are shared through the Bruins experience right now we got no experience right now for the Boston Bruins at least on the ice I would say yeah it’s not great you know like the meme of um the guy who plays Pablo Escobar and uh Narcos where he’s just chilling like at the pool or he’s just like staring you don’t realize how accurate that is once like again everyone everyone’s lives you know everyone’s got their own thing everyone grows up it’s part of growing up but it is a lot of like once you don’t really have like the fallback of like oh let’s just go to the bar or let’s go hang out it’s like oh now I’m just sitting around i’m like I’m like hu in Breaking Bad when he’s like just chilling in the hotel like that’s how I feel right now i’m just waiting for like oh has the NHL announced when the NHL draft lottery is No why would they it’s only like in two weeks like Yeah why do anything like that so why help us out why give us a bone yeah exactly so it’s not great there was some Bruins news this week however uh what’s the best way to put this Ty it wasn’t great it wasn’t No you look back on it wasn’t ideal the Bruins had their end of season press conference on Wednesday i think we both have uh talked about it quite a bit um but for anyone who hasn’t been following along or hopefully thankfully maybe avoided listening to it uh Wednesday uh Bruins leadership Charlie Jacobs became Neilie Don Sweeney did their usual end of season press conference and these things all can vary every year in terms of the message the tone all these things usually there’s there’s central themes that go into play right there’s the disappointment usually it’s after a failed playoff run come up short you address the flaws you set expectations for next year and it’s kind of status quo um this year obviously with the way the team had completely bottomed out the fifth worst record in the NHL a lot went wrong and so you imagine kind of the same things right of you know taking the L saying you’re accountable and all those things and at the start of it uh you know you can dial up you know the accountability expectations sharing disappointment all those things as maybe empty platitudes but it’s what you have to say right it’s it’s what you expect especially if you’re a fan who’s been going to these games seeing a terrible product on the ice you want to hear the ownership and the leadership of this team say “Hey we share disappointment we’re going to be accountable.” All those things got a long way to go but check it off the list and what Ben followed I think we all echo the same uh sentiment here is just a lack of clarity accountability and it’s just not what you wanted to hear from from ownership in terms of instead of it being uh an hourong press conference where you’re looking at hey we messed up big time we’ve got a lot of work to do we [ __ ] up we admit it but hey we took steps forward at the trade deadline we’ve got draft capital we’ve got uh cap space we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure this year was a one-year blip and put this in the rearview mirror and we’re going to attack this and you guys please buy in as we do this and instead became an hour of defending credentials pushing back at uh you know track records everything you just don’t want to see from an organization that needs to hit the ground running this off seasonason to get their [ __ ] back on track and it’s just it’s not what you wanted to hear at all especially if you’re a fan that is just desperate for some good news after a year where there was that was in short supply I would say yeah and the Bruins have a really interesting way of of even when they do what’s right for the organization they find a way to kind of step in the mud right like this has sort of been a problem for them i just don’t think they’re really effective communicators um doesn’t mean they’re bad people doesn’t mean that they have nefarious intentions but I don’t think that they are very I don’t know and this ironic because now I’m having a hard time saying this but like they are not efficient at expressing the message that the fans want to hear um and I think the worst element of that press conference on for 52 minutes of just bickering basically was that I walked away and I said “If you look at this from the fans point of view you feel like you’re being talked down to like you’re going to question us do you know what we’ve done?” And it’s like “Yeah I do you’re the team that has been great in the regular season and lacked the weaponry to go on deep runs for one reason or another.” And typically those reasons have come back to moves that you have made or not made in your front office so what are we doing here and and I think to your point you know off the jump there are days you can do that right there are days and times where you can take your victory lap and say “Oh you guys all said we were wrong about this but turns out we were right.” There’s a time and a place for that the end of season press conference where you were the fifth worst team in hockey is not the time to do it it’s just not it’s not the time to peacock and crow about how good you’ve been in the regular season nobody cares nobody cares that day they want to know what what the future holds for the team there was way too much focus on the past and what the the winning reg the winning percentage in the regular season what’s that like and how they’ve been able to be successful and how they’ve had to pick at the end of the first round like it was very odd to hear accountability is higher than ever and then for 15 minutes to hear accountability go anywhere but the three men on stage it it it was everyone else’s fault they had a bad training camp they had a head coach that didn’t want to be here it takes two to tango they like they had injuries they took accountability sure in the opening statement but then it became defending credentials to your point it became defending what they’ve done and who they’ve been and I just think that that’s a that’s a frustrating thing if you’re a fan because you want to know the future you want to know the vision you don’t have to tell me your entire plan but you got to sell me something about the future and instead I got well don’t you know who we are this is why you should trust us and it’s like okay that’s great but what’s the plan what’s the plan moving forward because you don’t have Berseron you don’t have Marian you don’t have Charara and you don’t have Cr so where what are we going from here where do we go from here that is what fans wanted to know and instead they got a bunch of corporate speak and uh data-driven decisionmaking your fans don’t want to hear that they want to know what the what the hell the plan is moving forward and we didn’t get that on Wednesday yeah and I I think it’s important to view this from the fan perspective right because listen like for what our job is we can deal with snack the what about it like whatever like that’s part of the job and we’ve done it for a long time part of the business if you want to uh you know peacock and talk about other things when things go well sure and again I think we’ve both not uh you know my my paycheck from the Bruins for an office hasn’t come in yet but like you you look and they’ve had good uh things that have happened and we have praised them when things have gone bad we’ve also done that i think a lot of times when it comes to the various things we can look at what has gone uh well and what has gone wrong with this team there’s usually middle ground right and I think for anything we can look at uh the way that they’ve you know made situations where you can look at 2015 you can also look at 2023 and they put them in a best spot to put themselves over the top like there’s good and bad and you can find the middle ground but from a fans perspective and you know what our jobs are in terms of you know echoing the concerns of the fan base the people that pay uh you know hundreds upon hundreds of dollars to go and watch this team a team that was really bad and was a really bad investment in terms of going to watch them when you look at how bad the park was on the ice like we’re asking these questions not just for ourselves in terms of you know mapping out what this team’s going to do we can infer and we can look at Puck Pedia tai and we can look at draft capital and do our own work right of to like what this team could do that press conference is also important for the the top brass of management to be like hey this is our way to talk to the fans because hell they don’t talk they’re not an accessible group anyway like that’s your kind of one chance to kind of map out your vision and they didn’t do it like it it’s you know you have sentences here and there about you know adding some offense or or you know adding scoring on the wing but like that whole press conference should have been hey we [ __ ] up but look at all you know look at what we did at the deadline look what we can do moving forward um and the fact that I think the fans the ones that lose out on that right like whatever like it was frustrating for us because we didn’t get any clarity and that is what we expected in those press conferences when you’re talking to the fans and you’re echoing concerns and you’re getting questions about you know a new coaching hire uh season ticket prices and the responses you get whether it’s unprepared dismissive stuff like that if you’re a fan how do you feel because I don’t know like I think you go into this offseason as a Bruins fan not happy with how the year went but there’s a lot I think excitement right of like hey this is a new chapter some younger guys are in like we feel like we could actually really build something does that enthusiasm carry over into that press conference went because now it feels like I’m I’m back on the carousel of here we go again like and I don’t know it just I think from the fan perspective is how I I look at these things it How do you not be like just disappointed of that enthusiasm feels like it’s been tempered off of just how they conducted that thing on Wednesday yeah i I think to your point they’re not accessible i think I want to say they’re the only team in town that does not have a coach or front office figure who regularly appears on a radio show or a a television program like like Cam Ney used to be on our used to be on our our airwaves at on Felgger and Mass once a week he he didn’t like doing that he didn’t like the question so he stopped doing it don Sweeney doesn’t rarely holds any sort of media availability we get three maybe four a year uh with Don Sweeney ownership we don’t hear from unless it’s a radio teleathon which again is a great cause but that’s when we hear from ownership we don’t really hear from these guys a lot and so when you finally do hear from them um and it’s a press it’s a press conference setting after one of the worst seasons in franchise history the worst season in franchise history since I think 199697 um which was ended with them winning the draft lottery and getting Joe Thornton um by most measures this was their worst season since then in terms of stats slumps losing streaks all of that um so when you have that kind of season like you don’t want to hear how good you’ve been that’s not really that’s Oh well you made the cup in 2013 and 2019 awesome hey did you win okay yeah great like and so that’s that’s the the the disconnect there and and I think the Bruins do have to fix the relationship with their fans and and and I know that you know that sounds like fix relationship you you know you’ve had all these playoff experiences appearances you you had a great season in 22 23 what are you going to fix no no i think I think the fans are kind of awake now to where the league is going to where the game is going the speed and the skill and they want to know what the vision is to get the Bruins back to relevancy in the NHL in terms of keeping up with the true contenders of the league right um you lost in the first round in 2023 to a team that went on to the cup final the following year you lost to the team that won the Stanley Cup um and and this is kind of been a theme here of late where the Bruins are just a step behind the rest of the league right and so but I think I think as it relates to the fans they think “No our fans like fights and they like physicality and and they’re going to be happy to pay the prices that we demand.” I think this year was eye opening i think this year was eye opening where there were tickets available for very cheap compared to where they were in years past you did have Fire Sweeney Chance at home games that were audible on TV you did have fans demanding to know what the vision was for the future and so if you’re the fan if you’re the ownership in the front office you got to break out of the mindset of well our fans are so passionate that they’re going to come to our building we’re going to feed them whatever they want and they’re going to eat it up because they just love hockey no you can’t be irrelevant you can’t feed them slop and say “Eat the slop.” You gota You gota have something that gets them back in the building and I know back in the building is strong they haven’t left the building yet but we’ve seen it in the past when the Bruins are bad the fans will not go they will stay home apathy sets in quick exactly you saw it in 0506 you saw it in 0607 you got to do something to get fans to want to pay your prices if the prices aren’t going down tell me why I should bring my family to a game that’s the job not defending Don Sweeney and Cam Neely tell me why I got to get back in the building that they missed the mark on that in my opinion with that press conference on Wednesday yeah to your point about like the fans also evolving right it’s like tell you what if it was three four years ago and I tweeted out uh the Bruins should pay Mitch Mer 13 million plus and not look back i feel like a lot of their replies would be like [ __ ] idiot like we don’t want that guy everyone’s like yeah no we could use that guy it’s like if like again uh and you look at just the identity of the team and the identity of how they’re trying to build a roster in 2024 25 now how it clearly didn’t work out i don’t know i feel like you’d rather you know spend the money on a guy like Jake Gensel a guy who maybe he’s not a prototypical Bruin he can [ __ ] he can fire the puck into the net he’s got two goals I think as we’re recording right now keeping Tampa Bay alive like that’s a guy that helps you out in terms of you know what the end product has to be which is just can you score can you win games in today’s NHL and that should be the most important thing not saying that you can’t you know Nikita Zadorov can’t go into a playoff run next year and make an impact yeah but like you can’t build a team around just big guys that that knock you around when other teams are skating laps around you and oh yeah you want to get you know it’s kind of the same thing as to but has been the issue with Florida for you know years now it’s like yeah you got bigger this this off season you’re you’re able to you know settle the score with these guys you can drop the gloves and p punch them out yeah after the whistle who’s the one that’s leaving the ice with a win who’s the one that kicked your ass on the [ __ ] ice who’s the one who’s ended your season the last two years oh Florida a team that’s got a lot more skill and a lot more talent all across the lineup than you do and it’s like it’s not I’m not saying it’s not good but it’s pretty damning I guess is the best way to put it that your fans who have bought into the identity who have relished for years they’ve their grandparents and their parents and them have got highlights of Terry O’Reilly and all these things they loved O’Reilly to Luchi to everyone else we know what the Bruins identity is that fans now see how bad the Pros was on the ice and like yeah we need 510 Mitch Mner because he can [ __ ] score and create offense it’s like they’re getting with the times you need to do that as well because you’re the ones that are making the decisions here yeah and and and to that point that we’ve expressed here there were only three teams out of the 16 that made the playoffs this year that ranked in the bottom half of the league in terms of goals for per game it was Montreal it was Minnesota and it was New Jersey new Jersey missed Jack Hughes for the the stretch run and they also were without Nico Heir for quite a while as well in the middle point of the season uh Minnesota had a great start to the year uh and then they kind of fell off and they kind of backed into the postseason montreal we know what Montreal is they were a flawed team that went got hot at the right time in an Eastern Conference where no one wanted to get hot at the right time so you look at that 13 out of the 16 teams were top half league in goals for per game the Bruins were I think 28th I want to say in that that category so that speaks to the point you got to get more scoring and entering the weekend all of the teams with the exception of Dallas that were averaging under three goals per game this was entering Friday so my stats might be a little off now as we record this on Saturday but all of the teams that were averaging under three goals per game in the playoffs were losing their series with the exception of Dallas you got to score that’s this I think this has been a trend since the Colorado uh Tampa series in 2022 where you just look at the lineups now you got you go “Oh you need scoring you need scoring on all four lines you need star power you got to have a great power play.” Like unless your goalie goes sicko mode and and posts a 940 you got to score goals in this league it’s just it’s the way the game is gone now and if you’re late to this party you’re going to get left behind and it feels like the Bruins got left behind last year and Connor deep down I fear they may get left behind again because there was a whole lot of talking in that press conference on Wednesday about the defensive structure the defensive identity and then when he was asked about players breaking through and getting some more scoring he said “Yeah they got to score within our structure.” What are we doing here what do we What is your So that’s my other question what is your structure what is it tell me what their structure is please anybody because right now their structure to me is David Posternok oh that was what I was going to say yeah that’s what it is so what are you talking about within your structure you don’t have one it’s David Posternok when he’s on the ice good things happen when he’s on the bench bad things happen that’s your structure the hell are you talking about within our structure yeah uh I think that’s something we have to hit on next is looking at the identity but more importantly what this team needs to address moving forward and whether I think the most important thing cuz I feel like we all know what they have to do it’s does ownership and the guys making the decisions are they on the same wavelength of what they need to do doesn’t really seem that way so we’ll talk more about that in a second before we do that take a quick break here from our think when you look at what you want to hear as you’re as a fan of this team of you know improvements and again that was not a lot of the discourse was looking ahead on Wednesday of what this team needs to do it was fleeting thoughts who is smaller sentences as part of a a you know wider word salad of you know expectations what have you but it does seem like the most obvious need is just adding scoring and like Sweeney mentioned it once of like scoring talent especially on the wing which again I think signals like hey guys holy [ __ ] the center market this year is not good if we are going to add talent it’s going to be we’re going to be prial golden we’re loading up on the wing I like to hear that as opposed to like yeah we got to get you we got to get a top six center it’s like well don’t give Sam Bennett eight and a half million guys like don’t do that so that’s at least some progress of like not the same thing that we always hear of like you need a top six center we know I’d rather you kick the can down the road see what’s out there next year and or let your younger players develop whether it’s the guy you draft what have you like you can’t do it all in one off seasonason especially down the middle progress it all went downhill after that right because as you said it should just be like scoring scoring like we didn’t give our defense and our goalending enough margin for error and all those things and to your point a lot of it of what they said went wrong harps once again on the defense defending urgency uh playing within their structure and it’s like to what you said do you even have a foundation to build off of like you just need skill you just need guys that like can can make plays you the amount of uh guys on that roster that have to work so faking hard just to generate chances let alone score it’s not like a sustainable way of building a a functioning roster whereas again you look at you look at Dallas you look at Florida you look at Tampa yeah they’ve got like their elite players right you got the Coocharovs you got Kachchucks you got all those players they are just inundated with players on the second line third line that skate well and can just make plays happen and bury chances when they’re there can capitalize on the rush can you know make something out of nothing the amount of that same personnel that the Bruins have it ain’t there like it’s it’s stark when you just look at the lack of talent uh on that on the Bruins compared to several other teams as you said it’s not just the the juggernauts all these teams as you said that are in the upper echelon of scoring are in the playoffs it’s because they have talent all across their roster all across their depth chart you you don’t have the same you just need talent right now as opposed to who’s the right Bruin that fits in with what we’re doing need talent that’s what it has to be it has to be and and and honestly like you know when you finished the year bottom four in goal scor per game power play percentage and I think shots on goal per game they were they were also like pretty rough i think they were I think they were bottom five in that regard too i haven’t looked that up entirely just yet but like when you’re bottom five in key offensive categories I don’t care about the defensive structure and guess what that should be better because guess what you’re going to get Hamilton home and Charlie Mackoy back that’s assumed you’re going to be better defensively it’s the forward grouping what do you have what do you have beyond David Posterno and Morgan Geeki right now and Morgan Geeki may be a product of David Posternok that is possible i mean he he assisted on I believe I believe it was 22 out of his 33 goals to end the year i think Posnock assisted on uh for Morgan Geeki so you know that’s 68% of of his total production has David Posnock involved in some fashion so where is he what is he what is he a top liner is he a third liner what where does he fit into your mix moving forward but if you’re going to go up there and talk about defense it’s like yeah you’re going to be better there if Swayman is is better which he should be and if Makaoy and Lindel are back yeah you’re better there like you you do need somebody to take on some of Brandon Carlos minutes obviously um but your main issue is scoring it’s it we are completely fooling ourselves if we think it’s anything but other than scoring right now is the issue for this team it’s just like the other stuff is going to naturally improve with health and with training camps and all that but talent up front I don’t know man there’s there’s quite a there’s quite a gap there in my opinion between David Posnock and the next best weapon that you have up front in that forward grouping and so um I think whistling by that and clinging to the defensive structure that I I I I heard that and then I read it again because sometimes you lose things in the moment hearing them live versus reading them i went “Oh wow they’re not going to change anything they they they believe this is how they’re going to win which I don’t think it’s how you win in 2025.” I just I just don’t I I I fundamentally disagree with that you have to be able to play defense in key moments but you gota to do that you got to score goals so that you’re protecting a lead late not chasing a game i don’t think they have enough to to win games that you have a lead offensively yeah i think it’s like not seeing the forest over the trees right like do the Bruins need another right shot D to account for some of what Carlo provided yeah and I think like you can either see try to find a value you know free agent in signing or try to you know similar to like the Andrew P trade find maybe a guy that’s underutilized a big right shot stay at home D and see if you can unearth more value or you know trade a player and get a move up in the second round for when like those NTDP uh right shot D are available probably like in the late 30s early 40s all that works for me because as you said like yeah they could use help but they should stabilize between you expect Jeremy Straman to be better makavoy is back Lind Holm things should at least even themselves out if the Bruins next year are thwarted and they plummet once again because of a top five worst defense there’s more serious issues then we’re like this team is the roster is rotted out like we and I don’t think that is going to be the case but if you’re going to then on like the first day of free agency when you’ve got you know Mitch Mana and you’ve got even guys that I think have red flags in terms of how much you want to pay them but Nikolai Eers Brock Besser these kinds of players if you’re avoiding signing them because you like oh we’ll get like Yol Arma you know a nice like scoring the third line guy because we’re going to spend all of our money on Aaron Eblad no don’t do that like that is that is the issue it’s like yeah like Aaron Ecklad does he help yeah sure but look at like you know you’re snuffing out the one fire you’re putting like the sand on it and you got an inferno on down the block that you’re not taking care of like and it’s the same thing that burned you last year like if you were to tell me what is like the the one thing in terms of the flaws of the 2024 25 Bruins that’s going to carry over it’s the offense because you just don’t have the horses you don’t have the personnel there if anything you have to I think assume that there’s going to be some regression from guys like Geeky like I really like Morin Geeki and I think him and uh Pos are a great combo together but I’m also not going to be like yeah I can pencil him in with 35 goals in next year same as like hey Charlie Coyle had a great year last year i can’t expect 60 points right i don’t think people thought the drop off was going to be as severe as it was but you can’t go with those expectations so yeah you just need more talent across across the board whether that’s throwing the bag at Mitch Mner trying to sign a guy like Besser and Eer just because they can generate something look to see who’s out in the trade market i I know you’ve mentioned it’s a guy that I’ve talked about before that I love connor Garland a guy on Vancouver who skates his balls off and just makes plays happen because he drives the net even though he’s what 59 but he makes plays happen that guy when you look at uh the way this year ended on the second line with Cole Kepky and Vinnie Lati and I’m not trying to be a dick talking about these guys like but they’re just not top six players a guy like Connor Garland maybe on a very good team he’s an elite thirdline player but he’s an automatic upgrade if he’s with Casey Middlestad or something like that like you just need talent all across the board on this team and if you’re going to focus in on the defense you’re I think you’re looking at all the wrong reasons to why you’ve gotten to this spot because it’s also just not 2425 man like the Bruins got to the second round last year and every single game was a white knuckle stressful game because you needed to rely on Jeremy Swimman to keep you afloat because you couldn’t [ __ ] score the Bruins had a a gaping hole on their second line in 2019 in the Stanley Cup finals and when Ryan O’Reilly was equalizing or playing better than the Bersron line you were [ __ ] like this has happened time and time and time and time again you lose to Carolina in the first round in 22 because Eric Hall and all these guys you didn’t have the horses to drive play beyond your top line every single year the personnel has changed it all goes back to the same [ __ ] thing every time we look at it like you really want to peel it back and again I sound like the Bruins uh front office by looking in the past it has plagued this team time and time and time and time and time again every year every year like they win in 2019 if they have a better option in game seven than Carson Kman or David B mark Stone even not even Mark Stone even like a another 20 goal guy like not even a Allstar player right and and I look at the teams that are equipped for deep success and deep runs like Warren Fogle is playing on the third line in LA you know uh Edmonton’s third line if they pull off a comeback has Evander Kane Adam Henrik uh look at Tampa right now their third line has Yanni Gourd and Nick Paul these are all these are all players that you that you look at and go you know what I’m going to get something out of them i’m going to get a goal or they’re going to grind guys down and they’re going to pave the way for my top six to strike florida right now has Lundelle and Marian on the third line like like that’s you you got to be deeper you got to be deeper and the Bruins have to address that they have to get better there um I think to your point you know and to our point here talking about the spending let’s look at just the own zone as a whole let’s talk about the goalending let’s talk about the defensive spending assuming that Mason Lorai gets like 2.5 million thereabouts as bad as he was like that’s probably going to be the going rate for a guy like that cuz he could put up 35 points 40 points run a power play all that they’re already spending about 38ish million in their own zone between the goalending and their three defenseman they’re spending a combined 21 million I believe on Zidorov Lind Holm and Makavoy how much more can you realistically spend on that side of the the rink without completely sacrificing what you can spend up front which is the main issue in my opinion that that is the main issue is upfront and it’d be great if guys like Fabian Lysel can pop if uh Dan uh Dan’s Lashmelis can can maybe jump his timeline a little bit here and be something for you next year but given the year we saw Connor and we ranted about it again and again and again what confidence do you have that they’re going to give the spots to those players and deploy them in a way that allows them to be the cheat codes for offense you can’t believe in it right now they didn’t do it this year when they had every reason to and so that’s a situation where I’m like I don’t believe it till I see it i’m sorry but yeah to bring it back to what you said I don’t think you can throw 9 million on Aaron Necklad and think that you’re also going to address what you what you need up front which is the more dire pressing need for this team in my opinion yeah it it’s just the way the team is built you just need you just need talent right like how much we tried this a year ago we they tried the building from the Dzone out thing this year and they can say “Oh we were hurt this year so it didn’t matter.” But guess what you sucked even before you lost Hamas Lynholm and Charlie Makavoy you were a fringe playoff team before you lost those guys you got the head coach fired because it didn’t work don’t double down on that you need offense you need offense my god i mean and it’s too like you look at just how much things can change when it’s just you’re adding a player or two into the mix in terms of just how it pushes guys in the right spots too like you look at like the 22 23 team again not to look at the past but like how much a 36 year old David Cr just being back put everyone in the right spots you push guys further down the lineup like how much just throwing the bag at Mitch Mner transforms your entire second line like you don’t have to like you know you can put who Joe Schmo there they’re probably gonna be productive you’re gonna have like two 50 point guys next to Mitch Mner like if you’re able to get Eers and you trade for Connor Garland and you’ve got on a third line and a second line two guys that can score 25 goals that changes things then all of a sudden it becomes hey you know we can then see what a guy like Potra or Minton or Lash Melis or someone can do and it’s gravy on top of it now it’s kind of like a as is and I expect them to do something in the offseason but right now you’ve got a lot of guys that you have options is there anyone that’s getting you excited for where they are no because I don’t know who’s skating with who who’s going to be put in the right spot to succeed can Casey Middlestat offer more if he’s with some talented players if his buddy Brock Besser is there and he’s the guy that’s finishing his passes yeah sure but right now I can’t see that like I like Fraser Mitten i don’t really know what Matt Potcher has to offer there’s potential all across this lineup I guess but you just need talent to push those guys in the right spots and to at least look at the depth chart and be like I can pencil that guy in for 25 goals you can fall ass backwards into 20 goals like that is I think what you need and that’s not what you have right now so you just need to add the talent and thing and then let things kind of figure themselves out i think that’s the most important thing yeah I I think that the talent is the biggest issue here right and and you got to change the way you think and you got to change the way you you bring in talent and I thought they they they showed a little bit of that with their deadline with their deadline when they bring in Marat Husadin off and they bring in Casey Middlestad those are not guys that you look at and go “Yeah those are Bruins.” But you bring them in you see what you have and then you go from there and and that felt like progress and what’s that’s what’s frustrating about about Wednesday is that it felt like a step backwards where you’re going back to well you gotta you got to do it in our structure okay all right cling to those those outdated philosophies I suppose and then get your teeth kicked in every April and May when some team that you got to face has a admittedly flawed player but thriving in a matchup oriented kind of deployment like that like that’s the part that will drive me absolutely bananas right where it’s like yeah but like if you figure out how to use that guy he’s not he’s not a black hole in your system like he’s fine like like and and and this is an underrated part in my opinion of what has made Florida such a great team is that they will bring in a Nate Schmidt they will bring in a Radco Gutas a decrepit Mark Stall and they will say “You know what larson we’re going to bring him in and we’re going to deploy him the right way and we’re going to fix him you got to do that like what’s your version of you being able to do that and to fix a player to fix a team and to get something out of them you know you don’t have to crawl by the way Melissa people know that you exist if you want to come and say hello you can come and say hello i don’t care she was I was like why is I was like why is the floor rattling anyways that Yeah that Yeah uh Connor says hi uh no i like you look at just also the the way the team is set up and it’s I it’s so frustrating when they go back to like the structure part of it it’s like well and it also goes back to the main theme of how we just didn’t have any clarity because like Don Sweeny’s talking about like with the new coach that you have to evolve offensively but they got to play in our structure it’s like well maybe your structure is broken or you don’t have one like what are we doing here ty ty what are we doing here driving me insane that’s what we’re doing i I like like that’s what the Bruins wake up every day and they say “You know what we’re going to do we’re going to drive Tai insane.” No that’s giving myself way too much credit um no i I I think this comes back to when you have the Berseron and the Crown for so long the job of the players you brought in from Providence and from the outside was just exist don’t feel like you got to dominate the game because those guys are going to dominate the game just exist and don’t stand out for the wrong reasons that was I think the motto for a long time but those guys are now gone you need game-breaking talent and you need to encourage players to take chances or to have the confidence to to make a play because 37 and 46 ain’t going to do it they’re not here anymore they’re they’re here perhaps but they’re watching up on level 9 you know as guests or doing a charity event somewhere and so like oh this sucks yes i I I think the development model has to change from simply fitting in to embracing what got you a pro contract in the first place what got you drafted in the first place very few guys are drafted simply because they can they can be a good soldier and muck it up on a fourth line and when they are drafted for that they’re drafted typically in the fourth or fifth round not first round picks that’s something the Bruins got to snap out of they got to snap out of that because that’s the only way to get back to true I think contention in this league absolutely and we’ll talk more about the drafting and another thing that was definitely not contentious and really ill advised by the Bruins on Wednesday but before we talk more about the drafting take another quick break here from our good friends over at Game Time Tickets is it game time uh Ty looking at uh the Bruins drafting theater saying why why because because I because I want everyone to be miserable with me looking at the Bruins drafting again fitting the theme of uh Wednesday’s press conference hasn’t been great has not been good i think Cam Neily disagrees with such a narrative as to why he was wanted to do a a podcast apparently with Kevin Baldi Bond breaking down every single draft pick that uh hit and didn’t hit most of them have not but um yeah like I think when you look at like a microcosm of that Wednesday press conference everything that was not right about it it’s you know f harping on the past and not taking accountability for the fact that your pipeline of talent has not been there and it’s not helped you out when you look at just the talent drain and the lack of just again all comes back to talent and the lack of of guys that can make plays and change the course of a game on your roster and a lot of it ties back to guys that you’ve drafted not the guys you traded if you want to look back at the first round picks what have you sure whatever what about you know 2017 18 19 all these years where you should have guys that are 23 24 25 on bridge deals helping you out right now supplementing your core nothing to show for right and so for them to say the narrative has not been as bad as it’s been I tend to disagree and I think a lot of Bruins fans are on the same boat yes and and I think this is where it was annoying because why are we playing narrative buster for the like like let’s just not even like and and and this is what pains me Connor because I do think and I know this makes me like a dick and I’m not trying to be a dick to Bruins fans we got to let go of 2015 none of us are bringing anything new or insightful to the to the discussion it was a disaster it has been acknowledged as a disaster as a disaster even before last Wednesday but we can’t change it unless one of us built a time machine and we can try our best but unless we saw a movie like that I think we could we could get that we can do I I know I know EMTT Brown it’s all it’s cool we can do it um unless that happens like it is what it is at this point but here’s what annoyed me it goes beyond just 2015 Cam it it it really does it goes beyond 2015 the Bruins have to thank their lucky stars every day for Jeremy Swimman being an NHL player because if he was not an NHL player they would have a stretch of a threeyear window of drafting where they got basically nothing 2017 2018 and 2019 2019 and 2018 kind of fall under the radar because of 2015 of just how bad of drafting the Bruins had real quick real quick 2018 they don’t have a first round pick they traded that to get Rick Nash we all support that idea that was a It was a trade they It was a good trade in the moment it sucks you got hurt but I would take that chance to try to win Stanley Cup i I really would but you pick Axel Anderson who is back in Europe by the way not even playing in pro hockey in North America anymore you take Jacob Lalco the only NHL player that you got out of this draft by the way you take Curtis Hall in the fourth round who I think is on a minor only contract with the Red Wings organization yes you take Dustin McFall who’s in the ECHL last I looked not in the Bruins organization and you take Pablo Shen who is back playing in the KHL so you get nothing out of that outside of Jacob Jacob Loco 2019 you take Johnny Beecher who’s played 130 NHL games all of which on the fourth line he didn’t score for like 70 games this year was a healthy scratch for the final two games of the season on one of the worst teams in hockey was a first round pick might not get qualified this this offseason honestly might not get qualified by the Boston Bruins this offseason then in the third round you take Quinn Olsen out of uh he was playing in the AJHL at the time played at uh Minnesota Duth I believe duth yeah does not get signed by the Boston Bruins they opt to walk third round pick they do they opt not to sign him he is currently playing on a minoronly contract with the LA Kings then you take Roman Beach off in the fifth round a Russian defenseman we’re never going to see we’re We don’t even know what he looks like he He’s never coming over we’re never going to see him you take Matteas Miki in the sixth round actually had some pretty good years in Finland you let his rights expire you don’t sign him i was a mentee hive uh stand for a few years and then he’s never never made the way over to North America and then you take Jake Schmaltz who signed an AHL contract with the Providence Bruins uh last month those are two drafts where the only thing you have to show for it are fourthliners that’s crazy you didn’t get a single impact player with that with those nine picks and I like Jacob Loco and I think he is an impact player for your team in the right role but you got to get more than that out of those drafts you just do you do and then and then the 2017 draft as I mentioned you get Swayman but before Swayman’s Vakan and Sudnika and that’s it like it’s crazy it’s crazy how little they have gotten out of their drafting and I do not want to absolve the scouting department and say “Oh well we’re picking late you know it’s hard.” That’s your job that’s your job is to pick players late if you can only pick a freaking lottery pick I can do that i can read Central Scouting and go “This guy is good take this guy.” If you can’t make draft picks because they’re they’re deep in rounds or it’s in the third or fourth round then fire them fire the scouts get new scouts i want guys that can find players deep in the rounds i know it’s an inexact science but if you’re going to absolve them and go “Oh well we’re picking late and you never know right?” Then what are we doing here what are we doing here that is the problem with this front office it’s just accountability where where’s the accountability for the scouting department which has let them down again and again this throughout this entire era of of Don Sweeney and Cam Neely yeah i mean you look Tai with like picks between like the 20s and 30s like you know there’s really the the the talent level does drop off when you look at like Wyatt Johnson um you look at Conor Mcichael like there’s all these guys that just suck that really can’t drive play when you put them in the right spots to succeed which again was literally one of the arguments that came nearly had was like oh you know what do you you know it’s the the talent drops off there and to your point I think you made a very uh compelling argument as to why we need to stop talking about 2015 i agree it is what it is it’s in the past same as 2019 same as 2023 it happened you’re not going back in time and changing it that’s all well and good bruins fans need to move on uh Cam Neely also needs to move on because he decided to share an oral history every year of what is going on with like the the 2015 draft is like next year he’s gonna talk about like Yeah like you know for the buffet food it was it was uh lasagna we didn’t like that either and like that threw us off every year he’s the one who brings up 2015 to both like defend Don Sweeney and also put up like you know uh excuses to why things didn’t work out it’s like why do you keep on picking at the same scab when like it’s a lose-lose situation whatever you say is not going to sway Bruins fans of pain it’s not it’s not like that that meme of future when he’s at the Apple store and he’s like oh like oh okay like that’s why they didn’t take any one of these guys like you know oh that it makes so much more sense now you’re not going to win that argument so why why keep on bringing it up like Kevin Paul Dupon who asked the question about uh the drafting that had you know came nearly extremely defensive was not like hey so like I know not to bring up old news but 2015 still really [ __ ] sucks huh like that was not the question no it was like what what has been the issue with adding internal players developing them and getting them in spots a very valid question and you could push back be like hey we’ve we’ve given up a lot of capital we’ve had you know in recent years we’ve had guys we think an impact at the NHL level between Lauri and Potra and we’ve got younger players in the system we’ve identified we liked Will Zeers and we liked Minton and you know it has not been perfect we admit that but we are in a good spot especially with a top five pick which they didn’t talk a whole lot about of like hey guys we have a potential here to really do something and said let’s defend our track record of 2015 because Bernie Ko played it for a long time a good pick but played it for a long time and you know uh Jacob Forzvaka Carlson played NHL games so like he was a hit right because that’s the only barometer that you really need is playing NHL games it’s not what you do in those games but that’s a hit right is is that how we’re viewing it is like Johnny Beecher a hit because he’s played you know more games i wouldn’t say so i’d rather have someone who puts the puck in the back of the net and helps your team win that’s my opinion i know it’s maybe a bold take but that’s how I stand on it i I mean listen you just can’t expect the Bruins to find better than Johnny Beecher uh with that with that pick just ignore the fact that Shane Pinto got drafted two picks later uh Bobby Brink uh Peter Kachchov Jackson Lome Niels Hoglander Alex Wasik uh who’s been who is Lakumu is filthy this past year for uh the Ducks too yes a bad duck team yes uh but but that’s but like if we’re going to absolve all the scouting of like well it’s not a lottery pick what do you expect it’s like then why do we have a scouting department why like that’s what I would be asking if I was ownership it’s like wait a minute so like we just can’t find anybody after the 25th overall pick so why is David Posternok here by the way why why I mean oh I forgot about him here like that that that’s the part of it like you can’t just like concede that oh it’s a late pick so it doesn’t really matter it’s like no that’s how you stay competitive that’s you got to hammer those picks and so um I’m not going to tell you that every every pick is it needs to be a home run but you got to get a higher batting average and if you’re not going to get it in the first round you got to get it in the middle rounds the later rounds you got to do something because every team has one of those picks like like Brennan Hegel was I think a sixth round pick by Buffalo which god god Buffalo what are you guys doing stop doing this you keep letting every like elite player just walk away um T is gonna be so good on another team in a couple years oh it’s going to be unbelievable and Peter but like if you want to if you want to say well it’s hard to find guys okay like I like I I’ll listen I listen I understand i could be wrong too because in 2019 when they didn’t trade the pick I was admittedly banging the table going “Kalev get KV.” He hasn’t been all that great i admit he hasn’t been he hasn’t been all that great he got he got obviously put on waiverss got claimed by the Rangers and I think he only played like 12 games with the Rangers or whatever so it wasn’t like he played a ton but like Quinn Olsen going back to that pick real quick you take Quinn Olsen and it’s like “Oh it’s a third round pick what do you expect?” Okay well I’m going to tell you within 10 picks you had Matteas Machelli go you had Jordan Spence go like like you had some guys that kind of went like in that same bracket dmitri Veronov went in that fourth round as well and so it’s it is a bit like throwing darts i I admit but like you got to hit I and I know I’m putting a little bit of unfair pressure on the scouting staff but that’s what they’re paid to do that’s what you’re paid for do your job like I like I get it it’s hard but like if you don’t feel like you’re getting enough bang for your buck then make a change there there’s just where is the accountability in terms of bringing in new eyes new ideas new people like they just don’t do that they just tell you oh well you know it’s this it’s that it’s like I just I got to see the accountability part of it that that they keep talking about i just they say it but saying it and doing it are two different things as we’re learning yeah and I think that is the big thing is saying and doing it and what actually works there and I guess to to end this one when you look at again I think before Wednesday and I don’t know if my my stance has really changed all that much but I tend to be an optimist I think Ty I still think there’s a lot to like about what this team could do this off season to not saying this team’s going to be back winning and around it to next year but to get back on track and get at least in the right direction have players you add to help out this team have younger players step in and develop that seems like it’s not far-fetched to think that could be the case and I think I’m excited to see what they do this summer but does Wednesday’s presser dampen that that sentiment right or how do you feel going into it because it feels like they they made the right moves you know in March to put themselves in this spot to really be aggressive and and accelerate this retool but I don’t know maybe it’s just the fact that they just didn’t harp on what we wanted to hear in terms of next steps like what the plan is what the identity is what they need to change but I don’t know it feels like you’re in this kind of state of limbo where what are we expecting they’re going to make moves but are they going to be the right ones because I didn’t hear anything that made me feel like ah this team knows what it needs to do they they admit they [ __ ] up but they’ve got the resources now to really correct those flaws and at least get back on track they should but did we hear enough do do we have enough of a track record beyond them talking about the credentials to be like “Oh they’re they’re gonna do the right things to steer this ship in the right direction.” I don’t know yeah it it’s you know I I I I do align with you in terms of like believing that they will make the moves they got to make now the problem with that is that you you got to hope that you know guys want to come here i I I do think that they do um it’s just like how do you what’s the pitch and what’s the identity what’s the structure who’s the coach there’s a lot of stuff they got to answer between now and July one and and I think that’s going to set the course for you know what they do here now I do feel like they’re going to get a big fish it’s just do they get the biggest or do they get the next best the third best the fourth best whatever i do think they’re going to be in on Mitch Mner if he hits the open market i now does he hit the open market he’s had a great postseason so far he’s looked really good he’s so [ __ ] good i have a I just I have a hard time imagining that Toronto is gonna walk away from him yeah um there’s there’s a difference between not wanting to keep a player and wanting to bring in Miko Rantin like you know what like like there’s like a difference there a slight difference i don’t I don’t think they want to move on from him but like you know what happens between now and and June and how does that sway their their how they feel about it like if they win the cup maybe they go you know what let’s not resign him because like we got our cup we’ve had our point yeah yeah and and so we’ll see what happens there but like I do think they’d be in on Brock Besser uh Brock Besser really good friends with Casey Middlestad who is on the Bruins as we know and I don’t think he’s going away he might but we’ll see uh we’ve talked about that before their center pitcher I think they’d be in on him i think they’d be in on Eers if he’s available um but I I think they’re smart enough to realize that like they got to get a big like a big time scoring presence to add to this roster um it’s just do you get do you get lost in the in the sauce of trying to make a one-year splash and you kind of lose sight of the big picture like that’s the part they’re going to have to wrestle with and that’s what’s most concerning for me my closing thought here is just the mix you currently have in your brain trust is a little it’s a little wacky it’s a little wacky so let’s just let’s look over this real quick all right Bruiser calm down um so you got you got a CEO who has admitted that he wants to get another Stanley Cup before I want to be kind here before his father who owns a team passes away it is a legit understandable admirable desire right so he wants to win a Stanley Cup he’s not going to be very patient with it i understand that part of it you have a team president who hired one of his best friends a guy he played with as a pro and a guy he’s worked with for almost 20 years now in the front office he’s worked with Don Sweeney for three decades basically of their lives maybe even more and you have a GM entering the final year of his contract boy I don’t like that mix that’s a that’s that screams desperation that screams potentially ugly contract so this is the part of it that I think fans are going to be skeptical about until proven otherwise what is the vision is it long-term sustainability is it one year because those paths are very different paths and you you got to pick one or the other and so that’s something that the Bruins are going to have to wrestle with here and forge an identity that their fans can get behind and that’s going to be a real challenge for them I think this this summer i really do yeah we will see we will see what they end up doing we got a lot to talk about this summer a lot to dive into whether it’s free agency trades the draft the draft lottery which is coming up thankfully one of these days we’ll figure it out um but a lot to again break down to see what this team can do moving forward with hopefully a lot more clarity than what we got on Wednesday i hope i hope for the fans especially uh Ty before we let you go where can we read your stuff where can we hear you on the airwaves all that stuff yeah so the hockey show’s done so you’re not going to hear me on the airwaves for a little while here a golf clap for for the job you did by the way thank you i I appreciate it it was it was fun learning how to do a show um it was the first time I’ve ever hosted a radio show in my entire life um so if I was clunky you know why and get off my back about it no um it was fun i really enjoyed it the callers made it um really exciting uh this was a year that was definitely challenging um for a lot of reasons obviously off the ice on the ice um personal life uh so it was it was nice to have that every weekend and you know feel good talking hockey passionate fans best city best best sports city in America best city in the world in my in my opinion um so yeah so that was great so uh can’t hear me there but you can find me at 985portshub.com uh we’ll have stuff covered every step of the way here in the offseason uh probably going to start dipping my way into the Celtics coverage a little bit as well i’m wearing a hat i like Celtics i don’t care whatever you can write about teams to like them you might you might be playing for them i’m okay all these teams all these teams beating the [ __ ] out of all these these Boston teams man it’s unbelievable so this happened as we’re recording uh did you see Matthew Kachchuck on Jake Gensel i sure did yeah yeah wow what a shock that they’re going after Gensel what a Oh wow who could have seen this i feel like Drax and Guardians was like “Oh wow what a mystery this is.” Yeah who would have saw that one coming uh so so yeah so you can find me every uh find me there uh for sure uh but yeah Celtics I’ll take out KCP i don’t care going at the knees i’m small enough i’m going to do it so I that would be my service to the Boston Celtics and Joe Missoula uh this spring very good how about yourself though yes you can read my stuff over at boston.com and the Boston Global have you covered every step of the way this off seasonason again looking at the many moves this Bruins team needs to do to get uh back in contention or at least in the right direction moving forward so read all my stuff over there you can also find my stuff on Twitter X whatever you want to call 1. Let me remind you of 1 player drafted by the Bruins lingren top 4 defenceman in the nhl just one. Traded for chances to go for it all we have been spoiled. I could go on and on

  2. They've never paid for scoring under Jacobs. They, in fact, have traded it away (see Thornton and Sequin — who won a shit ton of shootout games for them in 2011). Jacobs bought the team in August 1975. In November 1975, they trade Esposito for Park and Ratelle. The Bruins would have traded Gretzky for two BC kids who play a two way game. This is nothing new. No one knows this better than Neely — the Pasta of his era — the ONE guy who could score AND put butts in the seats. The B's always spent their money on ONE really good scoring line, a top D (Park > Bourque > Chara > McAvoy) and very good goaltending. Always enough to be in it. Never enough to win it, because teams like Edmonton and Pittsburgh were loaded top to bottom and had 50 goal scorers on their third lines.

  3. Pearl clutching ten ply pee wees, your bitching is insufferable …. the check came due, go be a Rangers, Wings or Buffalo fan.

  4. Ty Anderson, no, never, not even close and maybe, maybe you might want to find another sport to cover. The BEST month in ALL North American Sports, October, Start of the NHL, NBA, NFL is heating up and MLB is in playoffs and and and College is setting up the their playoffs. So, October is by far the best month in North American Sports.

  5. trusted? why are they going to take away medicaid and SS? try being a rangers fan or red wings fan.

  6. Be honest . Bruins went all in 2022 and were deep . Where did it get them ? A first round exit to Florida ! So don’t say every year. So we went all in and now people complain we have no prospects . It’s one and year … relax

  7. I honestly don't trust management. Loved Neely has a player like we all did, but management they both need to go

  8. this group, including Jacobs, has won NOTHING, and be counted on to blame the coach (who they hired). The front office needs to be cleaned out or it will just be the same ol'

  9. For me, I'm not even satisfied with just getting "more scoring" – they need more scoring *at center*. They didn't have a single player who could do an impression of a high end 2C for even just a small part of the year in 2024-2025. Every single team that makes it far in the playoffs (especially those that win the cup) has an elite centre, no exceptions. The fact that they didn't even mention their centre situation at the press conference was the most concerning thing for me.

  10. Your points about accountability begin with the part time ownership. But it’s been this way for a while, continuous lack of commitment to their fan base. Don Sweeney or Cam like them or not have not put a cup winning team in their building. They’ve failed to go out and get a stout puck carrying d man. They’ve failed to release players who are just passengers, year after year they held on to the players who cannot produce points. Worse yet, they extend their contracts. They’ve failed to develop his draft picks and the reason doesn’t matter, as an owner you are not getting results and you’re ok with it. Just as your dad Charlie, you have no sports business IQ. That’s why listening to these kids complain about those same concerns (just like me and my friends did when I was their age) sounds all too familiar. Sorry Charlie.

  11. You Boston wokesters with your Communist Mayor from Chicago are a riot…building your team back better, as Sea Bass put it. And how's that working out forya? You are #30 in the farm system ranking and #28 in performance with a lot of bad contracts just starting. You've won once in the past 50+ years with your business model leading the way. Perhaps, fans should follow concession sales and cheers that on, instead? 🤔🤨🤑

  12. Cam Neely will forever be my favorite hockey player. It pains me to see this team where it is. Neely and Sweeney need to be let go. They haven’t drafted well, their free agents recently have been awful bang for the buck. The got fleeced by Swayman. Time to bring my in new blood with new ideas.
