Personally, i would be ecstatic is Porter Martone fell into our lap. You are always asking for more sandpaper. Here you go! Not just fourth line sandpaper either. First Line potential physicality, size and goal scoring. Wouldnt be mad at Mrtka either, but I say best player available, which appears to be Martone. Cant wait for Friday!
I like Mrtka a lot, but he’s still very raw. I think he has the upside, but he’ll be 4 years away from getting to the NHL. Who knows what this team will look like then.
Martone is a consensus top-5 prospect right now – he’s only projected to fall because of everyone’s preference for centers. If he’s there at 8 it would be a huge win for the Kraken. He is the kind of creative physical goal scorer that we’ve been missing.
I think drafting in the top 10 again you have to pick a forward. There isn’t a defenseman that obviously projects as a top-pair player besides Schaefer. We need more offensive talent on this team and the easiest way to get that is to draft it. High-end forwards are rarely available for trade or in free agency where decent defenseman are a lot more common.
If Martone, Hagens, McQueen, Martin, or O’Brien are there at 8, one of them will be the pick. Go for upside defensemen with our 2 picks in round 2.
As an aside – everyone is saying that we don’t have solid defensemen prospects, but that’s not true. Evans, Dragicevic, Ottavainen, Ty Nelson, and Caden Price all project as decent defensemen at the next level if they develop as planned. Mrtka isn’t a sure enough thing for the majority of national media to continue to say that the Kraken “need” to pick him because of their lack of defensive prospects. Unless he can take massive steps, his ceiling isn’t much different than what we already have in the pipeline – he’s just significantly bigger (and more raw) than most.
