The Montreal Canadiens made their second big splash of the pre-Trade Deadline period, shipping Ben Chiarot to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night. In return the team acquired a 2023 first round pick, a 2022 fourth round pick, and prospect Ty Smilanic in a huge win for Kent Hughes.
The hosts breakdown their feelings and instant reaction to the trade, with both agreeing it’s a massive win for the Habs and that adding so many futures is the way forward. Also did the pressure of the Josh Manson deal force Florida to potentially overpay?
Who is Ty Smilanic? The 2020 third round pick is off to a great start in the NCAA, but what type of player is he and what is his timeline to the Habs?
Finally the hosts remember the last three years of Ben Chiarot in Montreal, and why the Habs Stanley Cup run might have clouded the judgement of other GMs.

Go Habs Go!!!! A fan since 1971.
😎😉
I like the trade – especially, if the Panthers flop next yr – but I'm not in love w/ it.
Habs dCore is a disaster and it just got weaker.. would rather have a 2nd + a bonafide dMan prospect that can play right away.

…the Habs were a Ben Chiarot away from a win last night…
TLDR; They have 10 unsigned roster players, their cap is going up 9 million because of increase in dead cap/contracts and some players on league min will get a few million on the UFA market
The panthers are in a world of hurt next year, they have 10 unsigned players, Yandle’s dead cap jumps 3.05 million to a total of 5.391 million (they have a total dead cap of 6.575 million next year), Barkovs contract jumps 4.1 million to 10 million and Verhaeghe’s contact jumps 3.166 million to 4.166 million, thats 10.36 million being added on top of what was already there before. The only help is with l luongo’s 1.092 million coming off the recapture penalty. If they want giroux like people still think they do they would only be getting by with LTIR space. Also Patrick Hornqvist will be turning 36 with a cap hit of 5.3 mill (January 1st birthday is pretty cool though.) Mason Marchment will also be a lot more expensive then almost league min
In 3 years maybe we will have a defenseman as good as Charoit. In 3 YEARS MAYBE WE WILL HAVE A FORWARD AS GOOD AS Toffoli. Is this what rebuild means? Trade our best players for players that have yet to prove anything.
Me want more cookies! The next trade for Lekky I hope they shoot to get the back up goalie with Rangers. Me want for cookies!
