NHL Boston Bruins NEW Jerseys & Branding! RETRO!

hey everybody Neil here from Post to Post it’s been a busy week i had other videos planned for yesterday and today actually and then St louis went crazy boston went crazy with their announcements so we had to pivot and make some changes here on the channel so we talked about St louis yesterday in that video if you haven’t seen it go check it out i did a deep dive into the jerseys uh the logo we got right down into the details of the angularity of the logo and stuff we’re going to do the exact same thing here today a little bit with specifically the shoulder patch uh we’re obviously going to look at the jerseys so this one isn’t as big a surprise as St louis we knew this was coming because of the leak that happened in April i actually already talked about that on the channel so this video should be a little bit quicker than the St louis one but nonetheless let’s dive in let’s look at the images that has been provided by the Boston Bruins and I’ll just go in order of how I saw them essentially and how they were released and we’ll just talk through them so this first one um well I guess my first impression is I love it i don’t think Boston had bad home jerseys or bad away jerseys but I like the retro look here boston’s an it’s an original 16 team it’s an old team so it fits that kind of retro mentality and retro visual this is the it’s you know it’s the happy Gilmore uh jersey and I I love this this makes me very nostalgic as someone who grew up during that time when that movie came out um I think this is the perfect move by the Boston Bruins a perfect design honestly I really like it i love the fact that they just let the shoulders breathe up with the black there’s nothing up here i think that’s excellent and the uniform also looks tremendous so not a Boston fan but a fan of these uniforms for sure next image you got Pastor Knack here and you don’t see a shoulder patch there but we will talk about that soon cuz it’s actually on the other side and uh from that angle it looks pretty good let’s continue and you can see Makavoy and Pastor Knight together now you can kind of see that that shoulder patch just creeping in there a little bit you can see the number kit as well it’s got a pretty thick white stroke on it maybe a little bit thicker than I would have anticipated it almost is a little bit too bright in that section you almost need like an interior black stroke or something just to add a little bit more separation but it’s okay uh moving on there you go there you can see the logo i’ll zoom in so you can see a little bit more although we are going to take a closer look later uh you can see it’s the bear with the Bruins font in there let’s continue get a a full you know head to toe look at this uniform i don’t love the fact that there’s only one shoulder patch on there i would have preferred some symmetry and have them both have both or have none i don’t love the idea especially on that side where you have jerseys with C’s and A’s and you’re already weighted visually from the the A and then you add another shoulder patch on there it just makes the jersey look very offkilter just from like a you know visual perspective and then this is empty i’d prefer to see it on the other shoulder if I’m being super nitpicky let’s move on uh another another look you got the Boston Bruins font at the on the front of the the pants i think that’s um I think that’s pretty good that’s a nice word even though I’m not a fan of word marks in general so yeah looking good still and there actually there I forgot I had this image it is a better look at the of the shoulder patch i like the shoulder patch it’s cool it has some flaws and some what I think are pretty serious design flaws which we’ll talk about but in general I like it uh now moving on to some graphics and images that they provided on their social media so you can see the Away jersey here it’s essentially an inverse obviously the logo is has been inversed color-wise and I think the Away jersey is really good like super super good these are jerseys not as a Boston fan but as a jersey collector these are jerseys that I want in my collection because I think they are so perfect for Boston i really think this was the right decision for them and you can see down below there’s two spoke bees and you can see them side by side so that’s a great great presentation here by Boston Bruins as well so shout out to the team graphic designers uh next is just an individual graphic here of the jersey and then down below you can see that little tag it says Boston on uh on the home and it says Bruins on the away there are some other teams that do this on some specific areas of the jersey florida it’s one of those teams they use Panthers on one jersey and then then use Florida on the other which is pretty cool so I like that little I like like that little touch uh the next one here is calling out the shoulder patch on there so the home shoulder patch and the away shoulder patch I think are pretty much identical other than the actual jersey that they’re stitched on but in terms of color and design and stuff they’re very you know they’re identical the next uh one we have here is the Away jersey you know that looks good i really like the black at the bottom of the sleeves that was a great decision i think it’s going to blend nicely into the pants so to have a a better relationship there so absolutely fantastic away jersey that’s likely the jerseys I’ll probably try and get first if I get any of these and then uh they also provided some marketing mumbo jumbo I guess I’ll call it it is a bunch of stuff that I’m not going to read feel free to read it if you’d like pause the video or go to their social media they talk about tradition and you know it’s not nonsense it’s all important stuff it’s just a bit fluffy it’s just a bit fluffy okay moving on to the shoulder patch there is text down there again but I’m not going to uh I’m not going to read it i just want to talk about the actual logo itself the first thing I noticed about this logo is that the text is not in the correct position it is not symmetrically placed within the bear or the Bruin it is it is left justified too much it’s closer to the edges of the bear on the left than it is on the right uh top bottom and I I will prove it i’ll prove it to you cuz I I knew it was the case i’ve just it’s gut instinct okay you I can just tell so I went to Photoshop and I uh I proved it to myself and I’ll prove it to you as well with some images so here is a closeup of the logo and I created a red line from basically the I guess I didn’t want to go too far right i wanted to keep it a little bit in the center so I went off to the right of the tea and I just made a red line from the the yellow at the bottom of the yellow and then the top of the white of the tea just to get a baseline of okay positionally this is generally um how far away it is and then if this was designed correctly every point that you would copy and paste that line to around that degree of arc in the text would be would would line up exactly with the tip of the yellow and the tip of the text the arc of the Boston font is not the same degree as the bear itself so I decided to go all the way around the logo and add a bunch so you can see that it is too far uh to the left it you’re starting to bridge into the yellow on the left you’re and then on the right you can tell that it’s it’s not far enough on the right it’s there’s this big gap and then down below doesn’t touch at all actually doesn’t touch at all doesn’t matter what angle I make the red you know that red line at or whatever it doesn’t touch the yellow u it it does at the top and it does not at the bottom not only is it a little bit left justified too much it is um it’s it’s higher it’s higher than it should be as well I wanted to dig even a little bit deeper than that I wanted to See I I needed to add something to see the actual specific arc of the bear and the curvature of the back to see if it was like perfectly aligning to a certain degree it’s not as you can tell here and then I wanted to see very specifically if the actual arc of the text was symmetrical and centered like just the not where it was on or within the bear but the the degree of arc in general of the text u it is correct hi it’s future Neil we’ll get back to video Neil here just in a second but I wanted to point out that yes although that the arc is correct the actual specific angle of the text in general is wrong it’s actually skewed to the bottom right i’ll prove that by introducing horizontal lines at the top of the left of the B and the bottom of the left of the B and both of the corners of the left of the B if you follow that horizontal both horizontal lines across to the right you will see that they do not align with the top of the right of the N and the bottom of the right of the N that’s because that person whoever designed this arked the text and then skewed the bottom right corner i’m assuming to take up more of the negative space of the bear because there’s more uh negative black space in the rear of the bear because of the legs are shorter there’s no head and stuff so they’re trying to fill that void so they actually skewed the text a little bit that’s also working against having it look symmetrical so I did forget to mention this when I was filming um however future Neil has fixed this mistake so back to video Neil i think that yeah I think these are this is a mistake that shouldn’t have happened and if it’s not a mistake and that was on purpose well I think that’s wrong personally if I was the art director I would have not uh I would have not approved that to be completely honest now I’m not saying that the Boston Bruins themselves designed this logo very very typically in the world of graphic design and media and and uh big companies and stuff yes they might have an internal graphic design and uh marketing department but they would hire an agency a marketing agency to create a rebranding for them so I’m not saying that anyone on the Boston Bruins actually designed this logo or made this mistake uh I’m saying that whoever the Boston Bruins hired whatever agency if that’s the case that happened they made the mistake and the Boston Bruins did not notice it so maybe it’s not a mistake i But I think it is it drives me nuts it’s Why isn’t it centered it should be centered and that’s just that’s just good followrough that’s just good technique so now that I found this I’m going to be keeping an eye out for the future to see if they actually change this maybe they change it in a year maybe they don’t change it at all but if they do change it I’m going to check about every 6 months that I see them post this logo or next season the following after if I notice that that that text has changed a little bit then I’ll know that it actually was a mistake but if I keep it the same like I don’t know i I just think it’s a mistake i’ll leave it at that enough of my enough of my rambling okay the next graphic they have here is actually one that I’m maybe most excited about because as someone who does not like textual style fonts like you see on here whether it’s script whether it’s just you know a regular font like you see in the bottom of the Boston with a puck going through I don’t really like them that much i think they’re mostly executed poorly in the sport of hockey baseball fine i’ve seen them in some other sports as well that are fine but in hockey I I just don’t think that they always fit i think more often than not they don’t but with that said I really really like what the Bruins have done here with this word mark i think that is absolutely fantastic whether it says Boston or whether it says Bruins it doesn’t really matter it’s the same type face and it looks so good with that very basic almost chalkboard chalkboard style drawing of the hockey stick i can absolutely see that on the front of a future Winter Classic jersey i wouldn’t love it but I’d like it for sure i think having that little bit of element of hockey and the sport itself really transcends a script font into a hockey logo if that makes sense so I like the hockey element that’s in there i think that was a great decision again whether it was the Boston Bruins who did this or an agency that they hired whoever made this decision I think made a really good one and I think that looks so good that’s going to look good on the front of a hat on the front of a you know t-shirt on a future potential jersey for sure on the front of the pants i think that would have been a great logo for the front of the pants so anyways I really like that i think the Boston Bruins made a really good decision there and overall obviously I’m being a little bit crazy with the alternate logo or the uh the shoulder patch but overall Boston did a great job a really really good job i’m super pleased with their decision i would probably give it a nine out of 10 maybe nine and a half out of 10 i can absolutely see them or hoping that they use this home and away for at least six seven years i would really like that a lot and I think Bruins fans are happy with this as well nothing wrong with their old jerseys like I said nothing wrong with the home nothing wrong with the away maybe they bring back bring that back as an alternate in the future or something but uh yeah I think this is the right direction for the Boston Bruins sometimes you need to look back in your past especially when your past is so vast and so rich and in history that the Boston Bruins have so we’re in a retro phase now in the NHL with a lot of teams so some teams are stepping back eventually we’re going to get to the jump forward stage again the modern stage we saw that in the ‘9s and the early 2000s we’ll get there again okay things are going to flop everything’s in a cycle it’ll happen okay the retro will die but right now we’re in the retro phase the Boston Bruins are on trend so I will leave it at that and now it’s your turn if you’ve got a couple of minutes down below in the
