Are Toronto Maple Leafs losing leverage in contract talks with John Tavares?

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to lock in on contract negotiations with John Tavares but how delicate is the situation? Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti discuss the limited trade assets the team has and how it impacts the contract talks with John Tavares. They discuss the latest reports on what the Leafs offered Tavares and if the team needs to be careful with how they deal with the negotiations. To end the show, Mike and Dave discuss how Mitch Marner could be open to a short-term deal and how that could make it interesting if more players look at short-term deals.

  1. The leafs never had leverage, a player saying i want to play here i don't want to leave isn't leverage to low ball a player……..saying i want to play here means offer me a FAIR deal and i will stay

  2. No. End of podcast. Sorry guys, Tavares has no leverage. He is disposable if he does not agree to take a discount. Sorry. You have Max Domi and Laughton who can play centre and people pretend Toronto “needs” to find a new centre. What they need is to fill the roster with value signings if you want to beat Florida next year. What they need is a deep bottom six. Tavares doesn’t accomplish that on an expensive deal. That’s take it or leave it. We really need to fill out the depth of the forward lines. Florida has 3 lines. Toronto needs to cap manage to get 3 good lines to beat Florida. That’s the end of the discussion. Bennett won MVP playing on a $4 million deal. He outplayed Tavares at $11 million.

  3. Marner is gone and the Leafs can't afford to lose Tavares as well. All this talk about paying 37 year old Marchand 8million x 4years isn't making it easier to get Tavares to sign a team friendly deal.

I don't think Marner needs to take a two year deal to bet on himself. If he only cares about money, there are teams that would pay him ridiculous amounts of money to sign, for any term. Teams like the Sabres or Blackhawks. I think it is more likely he is looking to see if it is a winning situation. If he can't win he moves on.

If Marner's short term contract is proof he only cares about money. What does Matthews short term contract say?

  4. So what are the chances Mitch leaves for nothing? Seem like a lot teams would need to do a sign and trade to make the finances work. But i'm new to hockey and don't know how common sign and trades are. And if a trade did happen, what could the Leafs actually get, given how reportedly talks to resign him are at best going poorly and at worst non-existent.

  5. Who cares they get in playoffs and lost or not getting not a big difference I rather they stick with their budget maybe wait for next season to sign someone else who is younger who can play playoffs style hockey

  6. These two guys are the classic quintessentially misguided individuals from the media. I recall that two years ago, these two gentlemen asserted that they could not trade Mitch because there would be no suitable replacement. Now, he has departed without compensation. It raises the question of why they feel compelled to sign JT. What are the repercussions of not having him? Missing the playoffs is one consequence which is not a big deal however this off season has presents a golden opportunity to rectify Dubas's hockey philosophy. Perhaps enduring a single season out of the playoffs to construct a legitimate roster capable of thriving in future playoff scenarios would be a more prudent choice.

  7. Does anyone in this shows check other rosters?, take a look in Puckpedia almost every Roster in NHL has half the roster with some trade protection…

  8. Tavarse, your legend with the Leafs,
will you be leaving for money! Bye.

They don't want to win unless its the negotiations.

Home town boy is screwing the Leafs.

Where have I heard that before? Marner

    Two peas in a pod!

    All about money!

    Disgusting!

  9. Remember Tavares took Knies in as a rookie and are really good friends…better not screw over John over..you might sour Knies too.

  10. leafs lost leverage yrs ago when they gave players multi million dollar contracts that were not deserved, 8, 10, 12 million dollars ???? for what?????

  11. Knies already wants more money than he's worth cause he learned first hand from the core, screw team over for biggest contract possible, greedy, spoiled millionaires playing a game, lmfao

  12. The Leafs never had leverage with Tavares or Knies once it was clear Marner was leaving. Both players are going to wait for July 1 and find out their "real" value. The Leafs can then match or they will leave. Both players know they will be offered more from other teams than the Leafs will offer.
The reason the Leafs have no draft picks is that last season was their "all in" season. It will be downhill for the Leafs from now on.

  13. If he doesn't doesn't sign for less than 5 mil AAV then the cap space is worth more than him, time to BBQ the Porkchop.. either he wants to win or he just wants to Marner..

  14. 100% nobody wants to gamble on Marner. Only takers are interested as a 2 year rental to see how he does. Otherwise nobody wants to buy the guy, just want to rent him.
