Did Buffalo Actually WIN the JJ Peterka Trade…?
ladies and gentlemen trade season is now officially upon us jj Burka has been sent to the Utah Mammoth in an absolute whopper of a deal and it’s a huge one with JJ Peter being one of the biggest names in the trade market this off season we’re going to talk about Utah’s return what they’ll get in JJ Purka and why I actually don’t hate this deal for the Buffalo Sabres so make sure you guys watch till the end as we go through all the trade details and all the trade talk here today and hit that subscribe button if you’re new for more hockey content just like this because I have a feeling this offseason is going to be nuts it’s already been quite a bit of fun over this last week now late last night we got the tweet from Frank Cervelli breaking down what is about to transpire especially in Frank’s case he had been banging the drums that Burka was available and was likely to get traded for a long time so it was only fitting that he broke the news here he goes on to write “The sources say the Sabres have agreed in principle to trade forward JJ Burko to the Utah Mammoth but that there was a contingency a part of the deal that was likely just the contract extension that ended up getting signed later on.” And then we got the bombshell from Elliot Freeman giving us the complete details on what this trade would look like saying that the JJ Perka deal is complete to Utah in exchange for Michael Kessle Ring and Josh Don and then goes on to say three players and zero picks involved and I think when all of us saw this trade to begin with we were all pretty stunned by just how much Utah was able to give up so little for the caliber of player that Purka is the biggest thing that was a surprise to me was just the lack of picks involved i would have assumed that Utah’s second rounder maybe a third round pick or something in the 2026 draft would have been coming back to Buffalo at the very least on top of those two players going to the Savers but here’s the thing after the trade call was made we got the official confirmation on the extension that Burka would sign with the Utah Mammoth with a 5-year contract at $7.7 million being confirmed and I’ll say this when it was signed and eventually put out it made me realize a lot more why the Sabres end up giving up on Purka even though he is a fantastic player and we’ll get into him in a second i think in the Saber’s case you would have absolutely had to pay more at least $8 million on a five-year term contract which at some points I mean could be worth the impeta but it is a pretty heavy risk especially since of course it isn’t a long-term 7-year type of contract which I was kind of expecting to see going to the Mammoth instead it’s a little bit of a shorter term at 5 years which I think is pretty good for Berturka putting him right into the UFA stage after this deal the big reaction to this trade in general though was that this was an absolute fleecing by the Utah Mammoth and I think when you first look at it when you get your first reactions in I can understand why you’d come to that conclusion it is an underwhelming return for a player that has had some great totals over the past couple years and is still pretty young at 23 years old i’ve been binging the drum on Peter’s case especially this last year for just how good his scoring was how good of an offensive player he was especially in transition you see in 77 games 27 goals 41 assists 68 points one of the bigger success stories for a Savers team that doesn’t have many right now but I think the thing that a lot of people are not really quite realizing here is that there is a reason why Burka was traded in the first place it seemed like Burka for one reason or another just did not want to stay with the Buffalo Sabres which by all means with how they’ve played over the past decade and a half I completely understand that but I mean in Burka’s case it wasn’t really for a lack of opportunity because he got all the opportunity in the world in Buffalo it seemed like just disagreements in terms of the contract negotiations that led to the situation happening personally I probably would have given Peter what he wanted but it’s a hard call to make for a team like Buffalo that doesn’t get to spend all that often because of you know who at the very top but I think there’s a pretty big difference between Buffalo getting fleeced in this trade and just kind of having an underwhelming return i think it’s more of the latter personally because I think the two players that got back especially Michael Kessle Ring are exactly who the Sabres need more of who is the exact type of player that I have been banging the drum for the Sabres to acquire it’s a big steady physical but dependable big right shot defenseman this is exactly what Buffalo needs more of not a Connor Clifton who is just all physicality but can’t back it up with defensive play michael Kessler to me before he got traded to Buffalo has been one of the more underrated defenders in the league and the reaction to this trade further cements that for me at 25 years old I think Kessle Ring has really cemented himself as a pretty competent middle pair defenseman of the future at the very least he’s somebody that I’ve liked quite a bit and this last year he played multiple different roles whether it be in the depth style or when John Marino got injured having a top four role for a big chunk of the season i thought Kessle Ring was great with those bigger minutes and was able to get past them pretty consistently you’ve seen 82 games as well he’s not as slouch offensively he got seven goals 29 points it’s not amazing by any means but for a defensive defenseman especially for somebody as big as him you’ll take that type of offense and I got to say this too I don’t think Kessle Ring has nearly reached the potential that he has i think Purka in terms of the scoring especially is kind of plateaued what I see him doing in Kessle Ring’s case though I could pretty easily see him being more of a 35point defenseman while being even better defensively playing even bigger minutes and to me I think the potential here is pretty skyhigh right shot defenseman that are as big as Kessler is and as dependable as they are defensively are extremely hard to trade for extremely hard to find and I think Buffalo got a great one for a long time here somebody that at 25 years old is just now starting to enter the prime of their careers and hey I understand it casser has only been in the NHL for a couple of seasons now and I know the mammoth aren’t priority number one for a bunch of people to watch but when you do watch Utah you’ll see just how quietly effective he is is and especially for his age it’s extremely impressive to watch now enough Kessle ring glazing because I think another underrated part of this deal as well is Josh Don and I feel bad for him because again if there were just multiple picks involved in this trade I feel like a player like Don would be getting a lot more credit for just the player he is the prospect he is and I think what he could become as a bigger wing I kind of see a Matthew Ny light in the future not nearly Matthew NY’s potential but again somebody that’s kind of in that same alley but further back in terms of the pure points potential but at 23 years old he’s somebody that didn’t really really get a ton of opportunity for Utah this last year but still got 19 points 51 games and generated a ton of expected goals so there is something to look forward to there potentially but as a bigger forward the hardworking nature he has the goal scoring potential I think he has too i think he could be a pretty good fit in that Buffalo Sabres bottom six pretty immediately and I think it is best for Don’s career as well utah was absolutely stacked on the wing having so many different options that were pretty similar if not a better player immediately than a player like Don so I think having that opportunity in Buffalo going to a team that has all the opportunity on the wings is going to be pretty good for him long term and I think he’ll be a very solid middle six player with the potential to rise in the lineup as kind of a complimentary piece to your best players the big reason why I think we’ve seen such a negative reaction to this trade is that JJ Peter has a big name in the NHL a lot of points this last year while players like Kessle Ring and Don haven’t quite established themselves completely yet but I think that’s a reason why I’m a little optimistic in this deal for Buffalo is that players like Kessle Ring don’t they have yet to really touch the potential surface that they have in the NHL and if Buffalo is able to develop them rights I think Kesler Ring could become a really solid number three defenseman maybe even better than a number four and Josh Dunn I think could become as good as a second line wing which is what JJ Purka kind of is right now even though I love the kid and I love the amount of points he was able to put up this last year it’s been heavily documented just how good the on ice shooting percentage was when he was on the ice with his teammates and of course him as well on the ice it was it’s going to be pretty unsustainable and I do expect it to drop just a little bit next year though of course the supporting cast in Utah is quite solid so I don’t think it’ll be too much of a decline but what has also been pretty heavily documented is the defensive issues with JJ Burka there was somebody that posted Michael Kessering scoring a goal or at least setting up a play where he absolutely deaked the jock straps out of JJ Burka earlier on in the year so that’s quite funny personally for me I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as it was in Buffalo what I expect to see is a little bit of a decline in terms of his total points but a little bit of a better overall game going forward not you know by a substantial mile but by a decent mark so I don’t think it’s going to be as bad in the defensive end as it was in Buffalo i think Utah’s going to demand a little bit more from him but at the same time I think Peter is at his best when he’s taking massive risks when he’s rushing up the ice in transition and this is kind of the reason why I was shocked the most by this trade is that I really didn’t expect the Utah Mammoth to be the team to deal for i get it if Utah really liked this trade offer which is a pretty good reason to do it then why not take a chance on a talent like Purka i absolutely understand it from that perspective but from the perspective of Utah specifically that is trying to get so much bigger so much more physical so much better defensively i’m gonna play like JJ Purka is kind of the complete opposite of that now as you guys know if you watch the bold predictions video I had JJ Peter landing with the New York Islanders but that was mostly because I thought that team needed more transition speed needed more of offense just straight up the ice in transition and I just don’t quite see the same need for Utah really i mean they’re a team that has a ton of playmakers in that top six logan Culie Clayton Keller Nick Schmaltz you have exceptions of course in Dylan Gunther but even though JJ Purka has had a decent goalcoring streak to him I still think he’s more of a playmaker long term which I just think in Utah’s top six isn’t quite a fit i mean you have the second line listed on daily face off at Nick Schmaltz Barrett Hayden and JJ Purka and I just don’t really see that working out personally with Utah and what I thought was going to be their priority this offseason in bigger bodies more physical players guys that can really bang in goals get in in the net front and make things dirty that’s the type of guys I was expecting Utah to go after and especially with their big need up the middle for it especially a second line center maybe that could still happen but bringing on a big contract like JJ Purka I think makes it a little bit less likely my main point here really is that I think Utah is just kind of adding to their strengths but kind of making those weaknesses a little bit more obvious especially in that top six i love me some Keller guys like Nick Schmaltz but there’s not much defense being played there man and they don’t quite have the insulators to be able to make that work completely especially if they’re going to go after a John Tvaris in free agency then you’re really not getting any defense in your top six i’ll say this though at the end of the day even though I don’t think he’s the greatest fit for Purka and even Utah I think they just got a fit that they couldn’t refuse they couldn’t refuse the type of trade they were offered even though Kessle ring is a solid player Don’s a solid player as well these are two guys that are pretty josh Don in the case of JJ Purka immediately and then in the case of Kessle Ring a player like Demetri Simichev I think could play a pretty similar role for them going forward so when it comes to that perspective I absolutely see why Utah made this deal happen why not get a an immediate player who at his age has proven so much with his production and his finishing level i think in Utah’s case it’ll be just fine even if it’s not the perfect fit I think it’ll still work pretty well but I’ll say this from the Buffalo perspective and a big lover of Zack Benson i’m very happy about the opportunity that Benson will likely be getting next year because Burka is off to Utah plus I think Josh Don like we’ve talked about getting a pretty big opportunity will immediately be the third line rightwing there and we’ll see if Tuck is eventually traded i don’t think that’ll happen but if he does Don will get even bigger of an opportunity and then we of course go onto the defense and the very likely pair at least right now seems to be Kessle Ring alongside Owen Power which I would absolutely adore those two I think would be great together two big bodies but two very different players in their style but it would give a opportunity to a player like Owen Power especially to actually be able to use his offensive skills and be a lot more confident in doing so because he’s really not had many defensive partners that are actually capable like Michael Kessle Ring is so even though the Savers team might not score as many goals as they did with a player like Burka on the roster I think this could actually become a win-win for both teams involved if a Turka does fit on that say on that Utah team becomes maybe a bit more of a goal scorer long term then I could absolutely see it working out for them and in Utah’s case the defensive addition here in Kessle ring which I think really changes that defense and that decor going forward and a player like Josh don’t who I think will be a solid one for them and will be the exact type of hard worker and defensive player too that I think they want a little bit more of in that team i think it could work out for both and I don’t quite see the fleecing that most people are putting out there i understand it because again in terms of the names Burka is a way bigger one but at the end of the day I think Buffalo need a little bit more depth and especially on the defense they get it here but with all my talk about Kle Ring and Don I think being pretty good at this for this Sabres team do I think they are the winners of this deal uh no i still think Utah in terms of the pure value is probably the winner of this trade but really my main point throughout this video is that I think the Sabres did better than I think people are letting on at the end of the day it’s hard to win a trade with a player like Purka that wants out that is as young as he is and as talented as he is as well it’s always going to sting trading that type of guy you’re rarely going to get a better player than a guy like Peturka when you’re dealing him but I think in the Sabres case they needed to fix some holes and the obvious clear one for everyone to see was right defense and my goodness there’s not many younger players that are at the level that Kesslear Ring is and as dependable as he is defensively while bringing the skating speed and the physical body there’s just not that many guys available in that mold and the Sabers got I think a pretty special one so in terms of like the trade grades I would say I think Utah did pretty well here i’d give them a a minus the contract extension I think is still a little bit iffy especially when you don’t have long-term seven-year type of deal especially since that will take them right up into UFA and make things a little bit difficult for Utah but still I think it’ll work out for them pretty nicely but for Buffalo even though I think most people would probably give them like a C or maybe even like a D range because they’re giving up a play like Burka I think it’s more of a B+ type of deal i don’t think it’s this overwhelmingly big fleece though again I still think Utah does come out on top but those are my full thoughts on the JJ Purka whopper of a trade if you couldn’t tell already I have a lot of Oh my GOODNESS man this trade is wild! Even though I'm much more on Buffalo's side than most, JJ is a huge add for Utah! Let me know down below, what are YOUR thoughts on this deal? Do YOU think it was a HUGE fleece? OR do you think it could be a win for the Sabres? Let me know!
Kesselring is a good second pair defenseman, and he's going to be much cheaper than Peterka even when he signs an extension after this contract ends. It feels like this was a trade to save money. It doesn't feel like a trade from a team trying to make the playoffs.
Terry Pegula needs to fire 🔥 Adams & hire a real hockey GM or sell the fkn team already.
Nobody wants to play in Buffalo anymore because it's a big shit show!!
As a Sabres fan, this is so freaking hard to deal with….. 😫🙄
What a waste of talent
I think with the depth Utah has on defense, they were going to lose a defensmen soon anyway. They have more than enough depth on the blue line to cover the loss of Kesselring. Peterka is, IMO, an obvious upgrade over Doan. I'll miss Doan, but Utah scored big. Hopefully, Doan and Kesselring will do well for Buffalo.
I haven’t seen Kesselring play a lot but I thought he was very impressive at the Worlds.
I wanna see who Peterka plays with first.
I think the let down here is the idea that Paterka should be a big fish getter at that age and restriction – fans were thinking Robertson, or Ehlers, or even Sergachev from Utah if that was who it would be.. but i like it honestly. Hope Doan grows up into a role quick.
JJ is NOT a good 2-way player. Not even close. All offense, no defense. Plus, since he got his bell rung at the beginning of last year, he's been shying away from contact. He hasn't been right since getting concussed.
So do I understand correctly that you ADORE this trade from the Sabres pov?
Buffalo got smoked again having to trade away a good player cause BUFFALO FUCKING SUCKS. Sorry sabres fans but its true.
agreed, I like Kesselring, I still think Utah won the trade but I don't think Buffalo got fleeced anywhere near as much as people are saying
We will have to see how next year pans out to detirmine a winner
Kess isn’t defensive d man, he rushes consistently and isn’t great and rush d, more offensive than defensive
There is a theory floating around (that I agree with) that Utah told Adams that they planned on offering sheeting JJ and forced the deal. The term of the contract would be a 1,2 and 3. So Adams picked 2 NHL ready players in exchange for 3 possible NHL players 5 years from now.
Wow, I did not realize how overrated Peterka is amongst other fan bases around the league.
Was underwhelmed at first for the Sabres but as the dust settles I’m ok with this trade. Time will tell.
#1 Peterka cost too much #2 Peterka wanted out of Buffalo #3 Buffalo retains more cap space #4 + Josh Doan #5 Buffalo 29th in Defense in 24/25 #6 Peterkas D is poor
People don't understand how good Kesselring is a good 2nd pair RHD maybe even top pair with Dahlin I could see working really well. I just hope the Sabres don't ruin him
Rumor has it JJ got into lots of late night fun hmmm
Northeastern legend Michael Kesselring
People saying this isnt this bad are the same crowd that would defend the boston seguin trade
Utah gave up too much…in 2 years Doan could be a 40 goal scorer…if Oilers had kept Kesselring they would have a Cup….Buffalo won this deal believe it or not…
If peterka progresses the way he has the last few years, then buffalo lose this. Not sure how they didnt get some picks as well
Can you do a top 20 2026 nhl draft ranking
I read that Minnesota offered Rossi + something else. And Adams refused, poor Buffalo, crappy management their continues
