Evander Kane was traded on Wednesday from the Oilers to the Canucks for a fourth-round pick in this year’s NHL Draft. No salary was retained in the deal, meaning moving Kane clears $5.13 million in cap space for Edmonton. Is the Kane trade a win-win for both the Canucks and Oilers? What team would be a perfect fit for Mitch Marner? Is increasing the schedule from 82 to 84 games a good idea? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

After watching the disaster Kane was as a team mate and player in San Jose, I was shocked that Edmonton would want him. An analysis of his play for the Oilers for two seasons shows him to be the same low skill player who can easily be goaded into costly penalties especially fights. He has got to be disproportionately responsible for so many power play goals against Edmonton, therefore losing them plenty of games. For example, in the 2018-19 season with San Jose Sharks, Kane had 153 penalty minutes in 75 games. Basically a two minute penalty in every game he played. Add to that his chronic gambling problem and you have a player that should be out of the NHL completely, not trying to sabotage the Vancouver Canucks, now his fifth team in the league.
Oilers got fleeced 😅🤣
Boring and obnoxious "talking heads".
You're assuming a lot about Canadians. Maybe some Canadians want hockey in June, some certainly don't, especially as the game is now.
Foegele, Holloway, Broberg and McLeod are really missed. There was no way to hold Kane, though you would want him.
It`s just cap that needs to go.
Kane is a good player but the Canucks management is delusional, acting like a contender and not thinking of the need to develop in-house talent for the future
Evander Kane if healthy for the 2027 season, I can see him back in the oilers uniform on a 2 year deal for like 2m’s. it’s a genius move Stan Bowman just did. Get rid of his contract so that we don’t have to eat his 5mil & at the same time still give Bouch bomb a contract? once he’s a free agent he won’t mind coming back on a shorter term. It’s a salary dump. Big move
I have the same thoughts as Button. Kane has grit and skill, he's in a contract year so he might try even harder next year, and he's physically re-habbed. A 4th-round pick is basically nothing. Feels like it would have been wiser to hold on to him for next year's playoffs and then let him walk for nothing.
Ironically, this is a gamble by Allvin. Hope it pays off.
Edmonton got a bag of pucks in return. 2025 draft is garbage.
I new he lived in Vancouver
Sorry jay we like hockey in June
Oilers fans wanna see our team in the finals in may, no hockey in June
How much time did Craig Button spend watching the Oilers play over the last 3 seasons that Kane was there other than the finals where Kane played terrible. Highlights do not count it's a false way of reviewing a player. The truth is overall Kane was never a 5+ million dollar player. 2-3 at best.
I have just become a Canucks fan! Oilers suck a$$ and will never win another cup!
Yeah Button two Stanley Cup final appearances equals management not supporting the team right? Offer sheets? I can remember Columbus! Anything to focus the spotlight away from your 67 leafs! Craig, to us all a favor and stick with Junior hockey!
Good move for Vancouver and as an Edmontonian I wish Vancouver the best with him
he's a cancer teammate
This is why Craig is no longer working in the NHL, absolute garbage takes.
The Canucks gave away JT Millar bwcause he created termoil within the locker room…and Evander Kane won't do that? we shall see!
How does the NHL have too many preseason games when you compare it to the insanity of MLB’s preseason schedule
Can't wait to see him at PARQ Casino every night.
Hilariously bad. Trade for a guy who was injured all last year, and pay him 5.5M. Vegas signs the same guy for 2M, this organization is terrible. Go Abbotsford Canucks!
Right on better than another sweed tying us up we need bigger forward for playing in the corners and keep the other team on their toes our forwards are mostly weak snipers welcome kane
Kane has skills but plays a very dumb game. His repeated stupid penalties were tough to swallow in the playoffs.
To my mind Marner is a great player that was not treated very well in TO. Toronto will understand the importance of his loss for many years. We will see him hoist a Cup. There are a handful of teams one player of his stature away.
I agree with Button, I don't like what Kane has done in the past but the Oilers could still have benefitted with kane. I think the straw that broke the camels back is the dumb or selffish penalties kane took at bad times and the constant murmur around kane outside of the dressing room (bad karma) that no doubt affected the rest of the team including McD not to mention hockey players are a suppositious lot.
Kinda weird how they bring up d petey as their first point
Yea Craig!!! Agreed with everything you said man. On point about the uniforms and GO CANUCKS!
Edmonton Oilers trade forward Evander Kane to Vancouver Canucks
totally agree about the Uni's. If you've won the cup leave the Uni's alone…
Honestly love hockey in june its low key still chilly now in may, patio season only comes out last week of may anyway, goin out wtb drink and eat outside and watch the game, ELITE
Not sure how I feel about the trade. I guess it all depends if Kane can cut down on the loss of temper/penalty moments. Not a fan of, and will never defend those stupid slashing type things he does when he can't control himself.
Ultimately it's pretty low risk. 4th round picks are virtually worthless, and his salary is only one year.
"Clear capspace elsewhere" then doesnt give any examples of where that possibly could be
It’s a good opportunity for both.. the Canucks organization is a mess so with only one year left it’s a no brainer adding a potential top 6 forward who is big, strong and can scrap if necessary and only has a year left on contract. Obviously Edmonton wanted him out so kind of a win win imo. What the oilers replace him with will be the key!
Halloway and foegle were true losses , and now Kane 😢.
The beginning of the end… 🥰
I'll be happy to see him come here
Only one homegrown player could replace Marner.
That player would be Connor Mcdavid
