Nurse slashing on Hintz – Tough Call Recommendation

  1. The crosscheck excuse is weak. This is freaking hockey, not to mention the playoffs. I'm not a fan of either team, but the slash was the clear penalty. Crosschecks are much more tolerated than slashes (especially when both players are not in motion).

  2. Can we see blackwells interference against mcdavid? I know you tend to focus on the dept of player safety side of things, but I thought it was a pretty weak call.

  3. No one watched ottinger slash oilers players all series long. Didn't hear oilers whine about it like this

  4. The rule as written is so dumb. It must be a penalty if there is an injury. Um.. how can we know how injured a player is? A ref isnt a doctor, and doesnt have an x ray, and cant foresee if the player will return or not.

To me, the rule as written isnt meant for this kind of slash. It is meant for obvious injuries.

Also I disagree with the point that this was high force and targeted. He swung his stick at Hintz in a general way and hit the foot as it was directed down the leg. It was not some two handed slash with obvious intent to injure. It was a retalitory jab because of the dirty cross check that Hintz gave him, that likely reaggravated a previous injury

Six games for slashing is a ridiculous take.

  5. He used the heel of the stick, which is a nasty weapon, and at full speed video the velocity of the stick looks pretty fast. Also as you pointed out the shaft of the stick bent indicating that there was some force applied to the swing. Good call on the number of games.

  6. I disagree with you…. I do agree it's a slashing panelty but definitely not suspendable. He wasn't targeting a specific spot. Slashes like that happen all the time. Unfortunate for hintz he's a good player but yeah like I said slashing panelty forsure but no suspension

  7. Sounds like someone is going to lose in their pool so they're throwing a hissy! Oh there was a cross check , but its only Nurse, so who cares. The league allows him get taken shots at all the time and no one has to answer the bell. Tough 💩 tough call. Hopefully, Roope gets the Hintz to keep his stick to himself in the future.

  8. $5k fine. If ppl really wanted to push it one game suspension. The Pietrangelo slash to Draisaitl a few years ago may not have resulted in as bad an injury as Hintz may have but AP 2 handed log splitting chop should've been more than one game and they only gave him one. Can't be more than a game, but we know how consistent the DoPS is…….

  9. The general consensus outside of Dallas fans is that this is a minor, and you're giving him a 6 game suspension? This video is dogshit

  10. At 0:08 frame 23 to 0:08 frame 28 (this video is 30 frames per second – use frame by frame) you can see the shaft of Nurses stick hits the left shin pad about an inch or two below the bottom white sock stripe. The stick did not contact the skate laces. This is a love tap that the majority of hockey players don't even notice. Pucks from slapshots from the defense hit much harder than this on the shin pads without dropping the player every game.

Additionally, take a look at what leg gives out when Hintz trys to sell it after the stick contact. The stick hits the left leg yet he stutter drops when his right leg contacts the ice at 0:10 in the video like the right leg had been broken. His acting required him to drop when his left leg (where contact was made) touched the ice. Hintz was not hurt in this play without a doubt. He should try Soccer as it appears to be more his type of game if he continues to act like this.

This is still a 2 minute penalty to Nurse and should be 2 for Hintz for diving. Hintz could also have an additional 2 minutes for the cross check that led to this but those plays in front of the net happen all the time and are never called.

  11. So if there is no difference in slashing the wrist and slashing the foot/ankle or any other bodypart, then why should there be a differnce between crosschecking the back or the face?
The bodypart does make a differnce und absolutely should so!
It was still a dirty and absolutely unnecessery slash by Nurse with the intend to hurt but not to injure.
So 2min penalty is correct. 6 game suspension would be more than ridicoulus xD

  12. 100% this was a dirty play by nurse. It’s not embellishment. He missed the rest of the game and he left the rink in a walking boot.

  13. It's unnecessary and a bonehead move from Nurse but it's being blown way out of proportion. It's a penalty but the 2 minute call was enough. No suspension. Maybe a fine though.

To be clear I i hope Hintz is alright. Definitely a big loss for the Stars.

  14. Bit of a slippery slope you are working on with the wrist analogy. I mean, in that case, the cross check to the upper back would have been a major if it was to the face, so can we penalize that as if it was? No? Then using the slash on the wrist as a “for like” is not something that should even be a thought.

The “downward” slash is because sticks are long and held on the ice. If it wasn’t downward, then we are talking some serious chopping! Nurse felt the cross check (a part of hockey), and gave a blind slash towards his legs as a “thank you”… roope’s right leg was the intended target and since it happened to be a bit further back than expected at that point, the long, angled stick mentioned previously continued downward to hit the left foot. It’s a slash deserving a penalty. If they want to do a 5k supplemental fine to say they are sending a message that it’s bad, all that will do is engage more retaliation as they have been told they are now right to feel it was egregious. Just my opinion, but it was not.

  15. As per the rulebook its a 5 minute and a game misconduct. I think this is also why the rulebook needs a change. There needs to bee a bit of leeway for the refs to make the call. I dont think darnell necessarily targeted that area he wasnt even looking at the target. I think he was thinking shinpad but hit too low. However i do tbink the rules need to be followed but they also need changes.

Look at what happened to stolarz, nothing came out of it and Toronto never really recovered from losing their goalie. We cant have players getting injured from dirty things without consequences. And i say this as an edmonton fan. But we also cant have automatic 5 minutes over any small infraction. How many slashes do we see a game uncalled? Alot theres a difference from a love tap to the shin pads and a axe swing. And i ultimately think intent needs to be the deciding factor or any little love tap to this shin oads all you have to do is flop around go back to the dressing room and then your team is getting a 5 minute PP and a opposing player off the ice. It incentivizes diving. I dont think hintz was diving its a vulerable spot to be hit by a stick. I hope hintz plays next game. I want edmonton to win but if we dont win i want dallas to win over the panthers and the last thing i want is more injured players on both sides going against a team that intentionally injures players

  16. If this is 5 minutes, NHL turns into fake wrestling. It was a slash in reaction to a cross check, then Hintz thought is was a great opportunity to dive and try and sell it, no academy award for sure but he tried his best. My advice to the Dallas stars, dive at your own peril… maybe worry about playing playoff hockey. If driving is part of "your' winning strategy this year, you should probably start polishing your golf clubs.

  17. If he did in fact hit Hintz on the foot, he barely did. 1” higher and he hits all shin pad. A 2 minute penalty and a $5000 fine, end of discussion. 6 game suspension? You are wrong jabroni

  18. Hey Hintz. here's a couple "Hintz": Don't cross check Nurse in the back as punishment for doing his fucking job and he won't slash you, you squishy nerf half player. And quit with the theatrics. It just makes you look like a little birch.

  19. Definitely embellishment from Hintz, just really committed to it by not playing in the next game.

  20. Discipline is a joke, 5 minute major and game misconduct plus 2 game suspension was to be implemented to any player with this kind of action, clear favouritism

  21. When Pietrangelo took that slash on Draisaitl a couple years ago, I argued that it should have been a much longer suspension (closer to 10 games) and I'm going to do that same here (closer to 8)
Call the 2 for crosscheck on Hintz if you want I guess, but this is an absolutely dirty and unnecessary intent to injure, no way around it. 5+game, with an added suspension on top

  22. LOL. Amazing how this video focuses in on the minor Wack to the shin pad and doesn't ONCE show all the Theatrics of the Embellishment. LOL Hintz should be suspended for the over the top disgusting Embellishment he performed in order to draw a penalty….. so pathetic.

  23. You gotta hope they're watching the same footage we are, as soon as I saw it I didn't like it. Fine, no major, but I thought for sure the league would at least fine him post game.

  24. Have to say that I totally disagree with your assessment. Yes it is definitely a slash penalty of two minutes. If you watch in real time versus picking specific snap shots of the video, you will see that Nurse makes contact prior to turning his head as he was following the puck with his eyes. I know these guys are good players, but to be able to blindly hit a specific target on a body part without looking is a stretch. Nurse meant to hit him, but I cannot believe that he assessed the various risk areas of his opponent and decided to hit that specific spot.

  25. For sure the slash is a retaliation for the cross check, but i doubt it`s that strong nor with that much grip and it`s hard to say where it hit and how it was intended. Don`t forget Hintz is skating.
If he`s a bit faster with his right leg, it only hits the shin pad.
That`s not a 5, it`s actually 2 for both of them, and i would fine Nurse the maximum.

  26. IMO Hintz would get a backpat from LeBron with how much of a flop he took. Nurse def shouldn't have done that and deserved a penalty even agree with the fine. However Hintz 100% embellished that HARD.

  27. Yeah a shin guard that sops 95mph pucks but a stick causes this? Embellishing and the "wearing a boot" the next day was theatrics.
    He played fine last night.
Now lets talk about Marchment's leaving the ice with his right shoulder to hit Hyman in the head and missing him and tearing his rotator cuff.

  28. There's a big difference between the wrist and and the foot/ankle/shins. Sticks are meant to stay at ice level. Players either have shin pads for protection or skates which provide minimal protection. Sticks at wrist level is always a riskier play for other players. Ever been hit by a puck on the wrist or in the foot? I'd take a puck to the foot 10/10 times over a puck to the wrist.
