The Buffalo Sabres DID WHAT?
we have a late night blockbuster trade to talk about and it’s a bit of a shocker i mean we all knew there was a pretty good chance JJ Purka was going to be traded at some point but it’s the return for Buffalo that really surprised me here are the full details of the trade the Utah Mammoth have acquired JJ Purka from the Buffalo Sabres and as part of this trade JJ Purka has signed a 5-year extension worth a total of 38.5 million so that is an AAV of 7.7 mil in exchange the Buffalo Sabres are receiving Michael Kessle Ring and Josh Stone that is it no picks no prospects this feels like a very light return for the Buffalo Sabres but we’ll get into that more in a little bit let’s first start off by talking about this trade for Utah and I think this is an absolute slam dunk for them based off of everything that was being reported I think we are all expecting Utah to make a big splash of some sort this off season whether that was making a trade like this or signing a bigname free agent and this is definitely a big splash if you’re a Utah fan I feel like you have to be thrilled about the fact that Utah was able to pull something like this off without giving up their fourth overall pick i think JJ Purka is going to be a fantastic fit in Utah they’re a young upand cominging team who were looking to add some scoring punch in their top six their offense was a bit topheavy this past season they didn’t get a ton of depth scoring so bringing in somebody like JJ Purka who’s coming off of back-to-back 25 plus goal seasons should help take some pressure off of guys like Clayton Keller Logan Culie and Nick Schmaltz and Dylan Gther adding an offensive talent like that overall just makes Utah on paper at least a much deeper and a much more dangerous offensive team and the best part is he’s still just 23 years old he fits right in in that age group with a lot of Utah’s other important core pieces when you consider all the moves Utah’s front office made last off seasonason reshaping the blue line and now this JJ Purka trade this summer I think it’s pretty clear that they want to get this team into the postseason sooner rather than later and honestly I think they’re going about it in the absolute best way possible not by going out and throwing huge contracts at aging veterans in free agency but instead trading for players referencing last offseason again like Mikuel Sergachev and now JJ Purka who can come in and help Utah win right away make them a better team immediately but also be huge building blocks for them long term so again absolutely love this trade for Utah and I really think Bill Armstrong hit a home run here shifting focus now and talking about this trade for the Buffalo Sabres and the return that they got in Michael Castle Ring and Josh Don now even though I said that this return feels light for Buffalo just compared to what I was expecting them to get for JJ Purka I’m not going to sit here and act like I think this is one of the worst trades of all time i actually do really like Michael Castle Ring and I think he’s going to be a great fit on the Sabres he’s a right shot defenseman which is something Buffalo has desperately needed he should round out their top four nicely he’s big moves well for his size put up pretty solid 2-way results this past season and he’s still only 25 years old he signed through next season at a very cheap capit of just 1.4 million which I’m sure the Sabres cheap owners absolutely love so I don’t really have any doubts that Michael Kessler will be a pretty impactful defenseman for the Sabres but honestly I feel like this trade for Buffalo is really riding on what becomes of Josh Don because even though I like Kessle Ring’s game at the end of the day he is a second pairing defenseman hasn’t gotten a ton of minutes on special teams up until this point in his career maybe there’s another level he can get to playing bigger minutes in Buffalo but ultimately I think he is what he is at this point and that is just you know a really solid two-way middle pairing defenseman whereas JJ Purka I think has the potential to be a real game breaker a guy that can score 30 plus goals in a season and be around a point per game so if Josh Don doesn’t pan out and doesn’t become an impactful player for the Sabres this is a trade that I definitely think a few years from now is going to be looked back at as an absolute fleece job by Utah because you just don’t trade young top six forwards with star potential for middle pairing defenseman so that’s why I think if this is going to turn out to be a good trade for Buffalo or not is really riding on what becomes of Josh Stone and I will say even though he spent some time in the American Hockey League this past season what we have seen from him at the NHL level I think is pretty promising the counting stats don’t really jump out at you with just seven goals and 19 points in 51 games but he was playing very limited minutes and his underlying numbers look phenomenal so if you’re the Sabres I think there is reason to believe that Josh Stone in a bigger role could become a pretty impactful middle six winger maybe a guy who can get you 20 goals in a season but if not like I said I think this is going to be looked back on as a pretty brutal trade for the Buffalo Sabres for Buffalo Sabres fans sake I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen because man it just feels like every move that the Sabres have made over the last five six years just seems to be the wrong one right when they traded Jack Eel he goes and wins a cup with Vegas sam Reinhardt obviously has become such a huge important piece for Florida he’s won multiple cups with them it really just feels like the Sabres just can’t have nice things which is super unfortunate for Sabres fans those are pretty much all of my immediate thoughts on this trade though as always I want to know what you guys are thinking especially if you’re a fan of either Utah or Buffalo sound off down Brooo f work we got an oh nyquest upload at 1 ammm😮💨😮💨😮💨😍😍😍
Quick, quick, someone trade a fourth round pick for Tage Thompson!
I’m honestly done. Done with the team. There’s no direction. Terry pegula couldnt care less what happens to this team
This buffalo fan likes this trade. I'm beyond thrilled to finally see a right handed dman to partner with power and I really liked what I've seen from doan. Losing jjp sucis but he wanted out and it was obvious it wasn't going to work out in Buffalo.
I get the feeling about no picks, but Kesselring is a very good, very underrated defensive defenseman, and Josh Doan is a decent middle 6 forward with decent upside. Doan probably never does what his father did but he's a decent player
Utah wins the cup next year 😅
Ima fucking crash out
Seeing the return, how could other teams not be on Peterka
INTERNAL CAP MOVE. PAR FOR THE COURSE. TANK IS IN SESSION
I've given up on this team
Is Chiarelli Sabres GM and they didn't announce it?
Kesselring is a really good return, but right now he`s a 2nd or 3rd pair D.
Peterka was getting better every year, Kesselring is good, they needed a RD, but value wise it seems they undersold Peterka. He should be worth much more.
Sabres are pathetic
I forgot Utah had a team.
im tired of living…. this is such fucking bullshit.
@minnesotawild will you ever do anything to make this team not be an average age of 33 🥲
I wanted him on colorado SO bad
If the return for Rossi is like this I'm gonna crash out
these 2 logos trading is cool. like Ice Age Matchup
Buffalo only exists as a hockey team because cheap Canadian fans can travel down to Buffalo to see a cheap NHL game.
Buffalo is an embarrassment & the team should have moved away years ago.
I don’t care Buffalo traded away JJ PETERKA. It’s the fact ADAMS AND CREW HAVE NO SPINE! Josh Doan has potential, but Micheal Kesselring is at his peak. No picks. No additional assets, just meh for back to back PURE talent.
I don’t really have a problem with this trade. Seems like this is the same reaction people had with the McLeod trade.
im very happy for utah wow they will be very good! i like that team so thats awesome and as usual ooof poor buffalo fans…
Congrats to peterka for winning a Stanley cup in the near future
I will go against the flow, the Sabres got exactly what they needed out of that trade. It's much more of a win for them than most people realise. It should pay off dividends in the coming years. They needed an immediately slotable promising forward who will not cost much and won't block out the way financially as well as on the Ice for guys like Nadeau, Rosen, Östlund, Wahlberg etc A guy on top of it with much better "play for the team" mentality it seems than Peterka who pretty much played for himself all season, everyone outside Buffalo could see it. Made the job easier for many an opponent (*checks notes again : oh ok, all of them !*). They then got the most difficult thing to acquire in the league in a young somewhat promising RD who doesn't cost much. Gem of a find there. NONE of those are available on the market. Yeah sure he's no superstar and a 2026 2nd rounder would have been nice but Buffalo still has plenty good picks. It is not a bad trade.
Sabres GM Kevyn Adams should be fired. he's made some very poor decisions, its dumbfounding also, that the owner brought Adams back after last year when his contract was up. The management team of Buffalo and Vancouver should not be employed at all
If I were to play Devils Advocate here…In Buffalo's defense – Peterka wanted out, so they had little to no leverage in a trade, and you can't let Peterka leave for Nothing.
Stupid YouTube ain’t working right now.
Can’t watch videos
Good morning to those who didn't watch this video at 2 am
adams must be fired for this trade alone, never mind all his other failings as GM. but he won't because pegula gives zero shits about the team.
listen, kesselring is a very underrated dman, and the sabres will be glad to have him. doan is…a guy. probably third line upside. but there's a significant gap in value here.
"impactful" isn't a word
next up, tage thompson to the habs for kirby dach and jayden struble.
dahlin is next. clearly this team doesn't want to win.
What could go wrong?
As you say, Buffalo can't have nice things! lol
Let’s gooooo
JJ is unleashed
Very easy these days to crap all over the Sabres, and for good reason. But unlike most people, I actually think the Sabres are better after this trade than before. Scoring goals has never been their problem recently, it's been grit, toughness and defending, none of which Peterka provides.
Could the Sabres have gotten more in return, maybe. But despite some questionable moves in the past, this one I actually like.
Somehow the evander kane trade wasn't even the worst trade today
perhaps you're right…then again, the Sabres got much better, both with a good defenseman, and ridding themselves of a high price current defensive liability in Peterka…since both Peterka an Doan are still very young, I agree, it's a little too early to grade this trade now…
