Senate Bill 110, a measure aimed at helping fund a potential MLB stadium in the city of Portland, is one step away from coming to fruition after the Oregon House passed the bill 46-6 on Tuesday, June 17. The bill passed the Oregon Senate 24-5 back on April 17. Backers of the bill, nicknamed as a β€œjock tax,” believe it will bring in $800 million to help fund the new stadium that the Portland Diamond Project has designed on the old Zidell Yards space between the Tillikum and Ross Island bridges on the west side of the South Waterfront. The bill now moves to Gov. Tina Kotek, who is expected to sign it and allow the potential funding to flow. Rep. Daniel Nguyen (D-Lake Oswego and Southwest Portland) co-carried the bill on the House floor and chairs the House Committee on Economic Development, Small Business and Trade.

SB 110 updates previous legislation that was passed in 2003, which allocated $150 million from income taxes paid by the baseball players and is becoming a more common avenue to fund sports ventures. The update raises the ceiling to $800 million to help fund what is projected to be a $2 billion stadium. The designs for the stadium include a retractable roof and 32,000 seats. The idea is toΒ  use the facility throughout the year and not only for baseball games in the summer.

  1. As a Portland native, I believe we will get a team. Hopeful for an NHL team in the next 15-20 years. Thanks for making this one Brodie! If the NHL comes to PDX, the stadium would be a beautiful backdrop for a Winter Classic.

  2. If Portland DOESN'T get an expansion team, the main reason likely will be due to the allowance of civic unrest. MLB is looking to stay away from these toxic areas, which is why you hear more rumblings about Nashville, Charlotte, Orlando and even a return to Montreal over Portland. If a expansion city is chosen in the Western part of the U.S. it's going to come down to Portland or SLC, and I think most will agree that SLC is the most desirable situation, financially, culturally and politically than Portland is. MLB is STILL smarting from forcing to play in empty stadiums due to Covid, and during the Baltimore unrest when fans were forbidden to attend. Especially with renewed attention towards revenue sources and failing cable situations, MLB is going to place higher priority on optics and sale-ability of the locations they expand to. NOT saying Portland will NEVER get a team, let's be clear they could lure the White Sox, Twins (if sold) or even the Diamondbacks if their current situations don't improve.

  3. Portland getting a team is fine, as long as mlb doesn't expand. Just move the bad franchises, like Miami, and Tampa Bay, but do not expand

  4. Portland is a beautiful city that is nothing but trouble. Lots of other cities without the perpetual civic unrest that Portland has.

  5. Brodie, I know you mean well, but please stop perpetuating the myth that it rains all the time during the baseball season. If Portland had a baseball team right now, they'd have the 7th driest baseball season in all of MLB.

And 5 of the teams (currently) are in California (Padres, Angels, Dodgers, Giants and As).

  6. The second coming of the Portland Mavericks, one of the greatest stories in baseball. You should do a featurette on them Brazil.

  7. That entire TAX situation is SPECULATIVE at the very best. You're are forgetting ONE MAJOR INTANGIBLE. The MLBPA, the UNION is NOT GOING TO STAND for what amounts to players on EVERY team that plays in Portland INDIRECTLY/DIRECTLY contributes to the building of a stadium. YOU KNOW the worry is going to be "If Portland gets away with this, EVERY TEAM is going to adopt the SAME strategy. The MLBPA is as Barney Fife would say "Nip it in the bud!"
