San Jose Earthquakes owner John Fisher has hired an investment bank to sell his MLS club, according to multiple people familiar with the billionaire’s plans. An official announcement is expected sometime on Wednesday.

Fisher, who owns and recently relocated MLB’s Athletics from Oakland, has retained Moelis & Co. to run the process. The move comes nearly four years after Fisher hired Moelis to explore selling minority shares of his soccer club. Fisher intends to sell a control interest in the Earthquakes this time, according to a source, who was given anonymity because the matter is private.

  2. Am I the only one who thinks Fisher thought he’d get the stadium deal the Raiders got in Vegas and is now scrambling?

  3. In my little city in the Central Valley there are two projects, one a 300 plus apartment complex and a second smaller condominium complex that broke ground and now have not had any work on them for the last 12 months. The reason given has been financing problems partially linked to interest rates and building costs. No reason to believe that the same problems are happening in Las Vegas. Does MLB really want to have a groundbreaking and then have a half finished stadium for 4 to 5 years?

  4. If I were Fisher I would sell both the A’s & Quakes and move on. His reputation in the Bay Area after the A’s debacle cannot be helping Wuakes ticket sales.

  5. In terms of possible new owners for the Earthquakes, I think the ownership group that currently owns Bay FC of the NWSL (who also plays at PayPal Park) which includes former USWNT players Brandi Chastain, Aly Wagner & Leslie Osborne will put in a bid so that they can basically own everything soccer related in San Jose. Given how well Bay FC has been running since they joined the NWSL last year, I think this ownership group should they become the new owners will have the Earthquakes in a much better position than they are currently. As for the Vancouver Whitecaps ownership situation, there are three possible groups looking to buy that team with two of them wanting to keep the team in Vancouver. One is the same group that owns the Canucks of the NHL & the other is a group that includes Steve Nash that is looking to build a new soccer specific stadium for the team. Lastly there's a group out of Phoenix that is seeking to move the team there even though Phoenix already has a successful soccer team in the Rising of USL.

  6. Thank you for doing a story on this. I would really appreciate it if you could do more stories on the San Jose earthquakes.

  7. If true, it’s fantastic news to the Earthquakes and their fans. Finally have an owner that actually cares about the team and fans. Well, let’s HOPE the new owners care.

  8. Fantastic! Fisher is a trash owner, and they haven't lived up to their nice new stadium over the last decade!

  9. I still contend, even if financing comes into place and the stadium is built, the attendance expectations are way too high to be able to cover the mortgage. It is 6:00 PM today and it is 107. Right in the middle of baseball season and it is not even summer yet.

  10. Smart move by Fisher IMO. Should sell the whole team if he can find a buyer(s) to take it all – majority owners don't usually want to stick around and become a minority owner, but who knows in this case. Fisher is persona non grata among baseball fans in Oakland (and probably other parts of the Bay area) anyway, so why stick around? Plus, I suspect he'll be putting all the proceeds from the sale of the MLS team into the constructions of the Vegas ballpark.

  11. ‪Dear Mr. Fisher,‬

‪Here is my final plan for you to be a hero..‬

‪1. Sell the SJ. Earthquakes for $600M‬
‪2. Sell the A’s to Lacob for $1.7B.Equally to the Ray selling agreement.‬

‪Now you have $2.3B, pay for the LV stadium in cash. Now MLB will gift you an expansion team because MLB wants LV.‬

    ‪So,‬

‪Oakland gets it team back, Lacob builds water front stadium privately. A’s fan happy!‬

‪LV gets what they want, a team home grown like the Knights. ‬

‪MLB and those owners get new stadiums in Oakland and LV. Besides the Rays are getting sold.. ‬

‪So Mr. Fisher, be hero, here’s your plan.. ‬

  12. This feels desperate. He’s going to fail in Vegas. Hopefully his empire is beginning to crumble. No one wants to invest in anything he is associated with so he’s going to have to go it alone. Boycott anything that he is associated with.

  13. I also agree that the Quakes need new ownership, and perhaps unloading the Quakes to new owners will indeed help get the stadium built. But I can also see him selling the team, only to see that stadium costs kept growing and he still had the same funding gap at the end of the day.

  14. I assume that Fisher would like to keep the land around PayPal Park. I always thought this was his interest in the team, not the on field product

  15. Quakes are decent this season, hopefully, if the sale occurs the new owner can take them to contender status.

  16. In my opinion, this owner was never interested in Soccer, in promoting soccer in USA. He bought Quake, Earthquake just to get the land deal. That is why San Jose has been constantly under spent and been the joke of MLS.

  17. The New Owners should build a new stadium and market the Quakes better and actually invest into the club. Yes the Apple TV deal was an experiment that hasn’t worked the way they thought. I hope the new buying owners take care of the club well

  18. Imagine growing up wealthy beyond belief in the Bay Area, going to Stanford, watching your family start the GAP then doing something so disgraceful as ripping the Oakland A's out of Oakland when there was a plan to keep them. Generations of folks all across Northern California loved this team so it's easy to see why he's so despised in the region. Pretty pATHetic that one could be all too willing to bet on Vegas and lose all of your fans in the process and be happy perfectly catering to tourism. He could've saved the Bay Bridge Series like he begged his family to SAVE the Giants and forever been a HERO in Oakland instead he chose to burn those bridges instead 🔥🌉🔥

  19. Fisher selling the Quakes to build this tiny baseball park contraption in Vegas. SMH. He could've did this and built a new park in Oakland.
This proves he doesn't got solid investor strategy in place.
