Hagel interference on Barkov – Tough Call Recommendation
Brandon Hagel’s five minute major penalty for interference against Aleksander Barkov is the perfect case study for the pros and cons of a puck focused approach to contact.
It looks like he literally thinks barkov has the puck and barkovs form is so tight he kinda looks like he even has it in that frame.
Mistake or not, can’t hit hard without them holding the puck so I agree with your take but people saying dirty play are interpreting a lot of intent. And knowing the panthers, there’s probably some projection going on in such accusations.
It was a bad hit targeted to a star player with the puck no where near him. One game suspension if 1st time. Game suspension f reverse and Kutch was targeted.
BETman said we can start betting on these Types of calls now with our favorite sports betting apps. We can bet if his concision will last more that three games, we can bet if there is additional discipline, we can also bet to see if the guy that hit Johnny G will be guilty or innocent!! Thanks BETman!
In real time, it looked like Barkov played the puck, and was hit afterwards. If he had touched it, clean hit, no penalty. As he did not, minor- interference.
This is a perfect analysis by @ToughCall. Hagel does not leave his feet. However, Hagel targets Barkov with intent prior to contact to make a big hit on Barkov, with it also subsequently being interference. Hagel even had a chance to completely beat Barky to the puck and potentially give Tampa a rush advantage. Instead, he makes a decision that should cost Tampa at lest one game of Hagel's participation. This is not a hockey play. Clean hit, but not a hockey play.
Dude. The puck isn’t being shot around the back of the net. It’s at the same speed as the players. The rule has always been called that hitting is fair game within a reasonable reach of the puck. Which is exactly what happened here. The head contact is a different story. Stick to the head contact.
How you don’t see any upward projection is beyond me. lol
Definitely no suspension. Absolutely not; that is just stupid. He interfered with him. So sure, call a penalty. I could even see a 5 minute major for the severity of the hit that Brarkhov couldn't have been expecting. But let's put away the cute little dresses everyone seems to want players today to wear, mkay?
if hagel doesnt throw a hit on barkov, barkov can hurt hagel. when players come together its better than to throw a hit that to do nothing, you dont want to end like barkov on this play. the right thing would have been for hagel to throw the check and barkov throws the reverse check and they just bounce off each other and no one is hurt. i think hagel should have got an interference call, then go out and have a scrap and call it done. what the hell is fighting for if not this?
Well I could have almost predicted this. Tchachuck levels Guentzel in another clear interference. Having suspended Hagel, the league is almost required to level a suspension on Tchachuck as well. It's just stupid. Neither hit warrated a suspension in my opinion. Let the players play. Unless they do something egregious (e.g. McSorely on Brashear) leave the punishments within the damn game?
Tough Call … Is this the first time you've done an analysis and said you thought the NHL would not issue a suspension (that the call on the ice was enough) and then they did? haha.

i'd rather open season on hagel than a 3-5 game suspension in a series that will only last 2 more games
This is dangerous because Barkov has no reason to expect to get hit at all.
This is 2 games suspension or 3. Puck not even there, he never had possession. It wasn't even late, it was never there
It was dirty play trying to land a hit on a none hockey play on the teams best player. just dirty and should be suspended one or two games
Barkov can opened himself before Hagel laid his hit. So there for Barkov is at fault here not Hagel.

This looked like a targeting demonstration.
This has no place in the game of hockey

If he had the puck it would be clean……. no sht lol.

Just completely ignored the puck. This was idiotic on so many levels.
100 % !!
I agree, but 3-5 is a bit much. I think its worth 2.

100% loss of credibility. 😅

Glad you are not the one calling the shots
It was a horrible decision but 1 game is more than enough….
You think 2 or even 3? Lol I'll go watch hockey content from those that actually know what they are talking about
so u would recommend suspension 3-5 games for interference, and what was the real penalty given?
I think Hagel should have been tossed from this game, if less than 5 minutes remaining then 1 game suspension

I think that the League got it right. If Barkov had been injured or if Hagel had a rap sheet, then I could see 3-5 games.
