Breaking Down Blackhawks’ OPTIONS with No. 3 Pick with The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler

On the latest episode of the Blackhawks Breakaway Podcast, Pat Boyle and Charlie Roumeliotis are joined by The Athletic’s NHL prospects expert Scott Wheeler to preview the 2025 draft class. Is it a foregone conclusion that Matthew Schaefer and Michael Misa will be the first two players off the board? Could the Blackhawks be choosing between Anton Frondell and Caleb Desnoyers at No. 3 overall? And if so, who has the edge? What about dark-horse candidates like Porter Martone or James Hagens? Wheeler breaks it all down. Plus, Pat and Charlie react to his analysis and put a bow on the Stanley Cup Final, where the Florida Panthers completed their repeat over the Edmonton Oilers.

  1. I've no interest in seeing GMs and their staff on the floor at the draft…I just want to see who drafts who and possibly some interesting trades…the 'poor' NFL seems to do just fine the way they operate…this is more writers and insiders wanting them on the floor so they can feel more involved….

  2. What excuse is there for his no show, horrible performance at the U18's. Was he tired ? Did the dog eat his homework ? Barkov my ass.

  3. You draft Hagens, who has the biggest upside at three, develop him, and if he reaches his potential, you shuffle and trade for pieces to build a playoff roster down the line. Like every cup winning team does. Just because the Hawks have all these smallish players doesn't mean they're going to be here when they start winning. Maybe Hagens becomes so good that Frank becomes a piece you can move for a big guy. The Hawks are so far away that worrying about size over potential is kinda silly.

  4. Jagens disappointed despite his provildege ontopteammBostonColkege all season…And playing with Leonard and Perraukt…they giyvdid not live up to hos hype…us he isc5'10.5 …not another shrimp…please.

Frondelk is nitcas goid as Eklund.. Frondelk went pointless on 15 out of his last 20Gp.

Meanwhile Brady Martin got points in 15 out of his last 20GP…was best pkayer at u18s. …PLAYEDVON A BAD team I the SOO…was +15 at u18sx..Hitsclike nobody else i the draft..Generational hitter…Great 1 tiner equal to Frondell or maybe better….

Many scouts think Frobdelk is not a Center.

Martin was the 1C in the Soo but pkayed LW at u18s..

Fromdell scored 3 g 3a in his ladt 20GP…15 with Djurgardens and 5 at u18s..

Come on…plus he looked slow at u18s. BTady Martinson much better.

Brady Martin gets no credit for pkayongbona loss OHL team..

Put Martin on a top or good OHL team and he gets 20 -30 more points.. =92-102 points..
    You gotta take Martin.

You will be sorry when Martin hits Bedard or Nazar and sends them to hospital.

But if you have to take another pkayer then Take Desnoyers…very good on draws. Very goid defensiveky and maybe woukd have had scored more if not pkaying injured this season..

  5. Iโ€™m surprised they didnโ€™t ask him who he would draft if he was making the decision for Chicago. Never asked about who might be available at 25. Not the best interview guys.

  6. Greene, Misiak, Hayes, Felcman, Broisvert, Vanacker, Mustard, Pridham, and Spellacy, 9 forwards 6'1" and up in the first 3 rounds since 2022, plenty of size up front to play in the top9.

Savoie is 5'10" but he's around 200lbs and plays like a tank.

Why do people keep saying the Hawks drafted a lot of small forwards? Or fast, Broisvert isn't known for being fast.

  7. kucherov and point, crosby and guentzel were pretty successful line combos in the stanley cup playoffs. the hawks were just trying to sign guentzel last offseason (who is smaller now at age 30 than hagens currently is at 18yrs old). so why the complete about face 1 year later? the hawks now have too many "undersized" players on their top 6 and don't need/want anymore? even though hagens is better than moore and will most likely be better than both nazar and moore? fwiw, hagens is over 10lbs heavier than desnoyers is.

  8. Cats level of compete was the edge. That's precisely why I hope Hawks draft Desnoyers.
Of course, I say this as a fan. Certainly, I'm not an expert.
    Great show, guys!

  9. I'd go Desnoyers at 3, he the 3rd best player in the draft IMO. he really doesn't make mistakes, very mature game….he's 6'2 and he'll eventually be 200lbs.

  10. Iโ€™d be happy with Frondell, Hagens, or Desnoyers. Best case scenario is Misa if the islanders or sharks donโ€™t pick as planned. I think Hagens is probably the safest pick, Frondell biggest upside/ceiling if he ends up another Barkov type two way center, Desnoyers seems like kind of a Mitch marner type great playmaker. Martone wouldnโ€™t be awful either and has some size but his stock has fallen a bit. Weโ€™ll see what they do!
