Evgeni Malkin won’t be playing in Pittsburgh passed the 2025-2026 NHL season and if the Penguins decide to recoup assets for their pending UFA, the Montreal Canadiens would be the perfect landing spot.

Yeah, no thanks. I don't think we're that close to be a contender to pick up an expensive, old 2C. If he's coming for a few mil, sure, but I don't know how much PITS wants to retain.
Malkin had the choice to go anywhere he wanted 3 years ago and chose to stay in Pittsburgh. Why do people think he’s gonna greenlight a trade?
Malkin’s trade value isn’t high enough to justify potentially harming your relationship with him. Call it stupid that the Pens locked themselves in with Geno and Letang but what’s done is done.
Pens fans are a bit sensitive to this subject because we saw franchise icons like Jaromir Jagr and Marc-Andre Fleury leave town for NOTHING. Let them finish their careers in Pittsburgh.
Why trade for him when we do not have to give up assets for someone we can get "free" next year if he wants to play in the NHL?
Gee Jesse for one you have a real bad take on a situation.
Sorry dude but this idea is laughable. The absolute last thing the Habs need right now is to waste assets on a guy who is on the verge of retirement. This goes against everything management has talked about for years. If he gets traded anywhere it's going to be on a team that needs that extra kick to be a contender. Habs are looking for young guys to add to their core and grow together. This makes zero sense.
Ironically, the one exception to all that would be another guy from PIT: Crosby. Difference is Crosby is still producing like a top tier guy, doesn't seem to be thinking about retirement for the forseeable future and always wanted to play for the Habs. Oh and it's Sidney fucking Crosby.
Kent Hugues has said a few times that he won't sacrifice the future for short term right now, at least until the habs are better. 3 months of geno isn't worth it. If they were going to get him at all, it would be the start of the year for the help getting back to the playoffs. Not sure even that makes sense though. Maybe for demidov, but a full year makes it a lot more worth it if you are giving up newhook (which we paid more for). I'd much rather see them go after crosby (if that's even possible).
When you say pittsburgh want to "recoup assets", what kind of asset are you talking about? I woud not give more than a 3rd a 4th and a 5th. Never ever a 2nd rounder or more.
No.
The Canadiens refused to sign Monahan back when he hit Free agency after we traded him to the Jets, because he was too old and injury prone (They didn’t know Dach would self-destruct and that Newhook was a horrible center …).
Not taking a much older, costlier and arguably worse player.
idk why the comments are talking like the Habs are selling the farm for Malkin lol, its at most a 1st and a sweetener which the Habs have 2 firsts this year and could add protection to next years if they're worried about struggling a bit.
Every Habs fan is screaming WE NEED A 2C WE NEED A 2C and then you propose a trade to address the 2C issue and they're suddenly not willing to trade anything away. Well hate to break it to you fellas but thats how it works. You need to give up assets to get new ones. If you don't want to sell the farm, Malkin is probably among the most affordable options you have. AND if you believe in Michael Hage as a potential 2C of the future, you only really need a year or two of a stopgap 2C to hold you over until Hage arrives and is ready.
The cost would matter a lot. I think it would be tough for the Habs to give up anything substantial for a pure rental at this stage of their rebuild. At the deadline a 2nd + B prospect would be something I'd consider if the Habs were in the middle of a playoffs race again. The real dream is Crosby coming to play for his childhood team though.
Sorry, but not happening. It just isnt likely to happen. Were stuck woth the big 3 till they retire. If any of them woild be moved it feels like letang. Would it be interesting? Sure. But it isnt a flower to vegas thing
the problem is his NMC. If he didn't have this clause, I could see this happening this summer
Jesse teying to sabotage the Habs.
Kyle Dubas is the worst General Manager in the league and has been for his entire run in the league.
Doesn't believe in goaltending because he thinks Hockey players can out score there problems. So he hires goalies who let in muffins.
Doesn't value defense so signs a bunch of midiots for cheap who can move the puck but can't defend someone throwing a beach ball at them.
He overpays for the top six especially on the wing and then hires a bunch of "Diamonds in the rough" who can't score and don't put up points. He signs these guys because he spends all his money on the top six so he is strapped for cash.
He always has to spend to the cap every off season so the team is built before cap and you can't do anything when somebody shows they can't hang in camp and your stuck waiving them and losing them for nothing.
Has to do right by the player by trading them where they want to go and handing out no movement clauses to make them re-sign.
He values Stats over the eye test. Looking at you Engvall, Cici, and Kerfoot.
Dude you just made my heart skip a beat with that thumbnail before i read it
It would be more like this :
Caufield – Suzuki – Slafkovksy
Demidov – Malkin – Heineman
Laine – Newhook – Dach
Gallagher – Evans – Anderson
100% No! Doesn't fit what they're trying to do at all
Jesse this is the dumbest thing ever. Stick to Leafs content
Send this video to Hughes and Gorton asap! 🙌🤓
Just the title alone and I knew this video would be atrocious 😂
If I’m trading for a center who is nearing the end of their career from the penguins it’s going to be Crosby. Getting a older vet at center when Montreal true window is in a a couple years is not great
Ovi and Geno aren’t going to team up in the KHL. They aren’t really friends. Ovi will go back and play in Moscow and Geno will go back to Metallurg.
Pittsburgh doesn’t need more picks.
DONT DO THAT
Love the idea but I think the Habs will be looking for an upgrade on Dvorak. A good faceoff guy who can also kill penalties to ease the load on Suzuki.
I’ve been saying this instead of going for other 2c’s. helps bridge the gap till Hage is ready. I feel it would help Demidov, and Malken was his favourite player growing up.
NO! He's a plug
The Jets would do better with him
The Leafiest thing that can happen is Malkin is traded to the Leafs 😂😂
Montreal doesn’t want him, to old not worth giving young talent or draft picks for him. We can get younger nhl center who can add 15 to 20 goals. Plus the contract…hmm NO
Considering he is Demidov ‘s idol, would be a stop gap for Hage and is a good 2C
I’m not overly opposed
Still prefer
Duchene
Or
Granlund
On 3 year deals
Or a younger option that can play 2C then drop to 3C in 3-4 years
But Malkin if healthy still an elite point producer
Dach – Malkin – Demidov
Not a bad second line
Laine – Newhook – Heineman
Decent 3rd line
If they trade for Malkin it won’t be at deadline it makes no sense !
what ? they play all season with no real 2C then wait until deadline ?
Montreal needs to find the 2C for take 1 of season not with 3 months left in a killer division
If they do it will be this Summer and play the year out with him there
are you NUTS …… take him to retirement plz….
Agree with the idea but not the timming you do it at the draft because you have sooo many draft pick this year and he plays the hole year with demidov… also get crosby in the trade pretty please
Geno is an old man and Hextall's contract was meant to walk him to retirement. I don't see him trying free agency after winning THREE Cups with the Penguins. Maybe he'll surprise me, but I doubt it.
It sounds great in theory but I think malkin at this point is to slow to be the 2c in Montreal
They should never have re-signed him. It was clear he was on a decline but being the new guy in town, Dubas did the popular thing, but not the smart, fiscally responsible thing, and re-signed him, along with signing Karlsson. This decline was blatantly obvious last year, with his scoring line of 16-34-50 and a shameful -24. To go along with his lackluster performance, he was his usual hard-to-coach self, with his freelance and undisciplined play, taking bad, selfish penalties, capping off a Pens franchise leading 1202 PIMs over his career. I say, Thanks for the Memories, Geno, but it's time to go.
C'mon, Jesse. No.
Alex Ovechkin grew up with and played for Dynamo Moskva, Malkin is from Magnitogorsk deep in Siberia. If they want to go home I doubt they’ll play for the same team..
Would he help Demidov enough? Age has a way of slowing the player down but also recovery time from injury. I would opt for a younger 2C.
