  1. If the team believes they can get 40 pts out of Engvall, then it doesn't make sense to buy him out. Does he have the skill to do that – yes. Does he have the will to; he hasn't shown that. The LL way of doing things was to pay on potential. That hasn't worked. I think they have to try and trade Mayfield as a throw in for another deal and eat half of the salary. Unless they are ok with him playing 10 minutes of even strength hockey.

  2. If the Sharks want Schaefer badly enough, Isles could trade down to 2 to take Misa. If that's the case, from an Isles' perspective, not only should they demand a top prospect in return, they should also demand the Sharks take on the full contracts of Mayfield & Engvall. San Jose has $41 million of cap space and needs to get to the cap floor. It all depends on how much SJ wants Schaefer. This gets $6.5 million off of the Isles' cap for each of the next five years.

  3. Plus when u send him to BP… he can be brought back for nothing if injuries.

    Mayfield could be same …

They also provide leadership in minors

  4. Firstly, Lou would never buy out contracts he negotiated. Secondly, no smart GM would ever admit they are considering a buyout if there is a possibility of a trade. Signaling a buyout would undermine your position and teams would offer slightly better cap clearance than a buyout would yield.
My thoughts on Mayfield: Until the Isles re-sign DeAngelo, they need Mayfield or some other RD. There are teams out there who need a punishing, shot blocking right-handed D-man. Perhaps a 500K to 750K retention would get a deal done without giving up any prospects or picks.
Engvall is the tougher dump. Some cap challenged team may take him on for a 3rd round pick and a small cap retention. The guy plays a soft, Euro style game, and that will never change. What was Lou thinking?
