EVERY EXCELLENT WAVE – VIVO Rio Pro presented by Corona Cero since 2016

the defending event champ but also just the most consistency at this venue gabriel now hitting the section real hard blowing the tail and hanging on and through the turbulence to survive that was remarkable there was a lot of obstacles trying to take him down to try to get the lead here i think he’s done that yeah this board looks great too ooh had the rotor on the outside too Joe so lands it we see the grab rail carve right there and combos it up on the inside with a couple extra maneuvers into the lip line so Medina with a fantastic combination to me this is the best wave we’ve seen all day long and here he goes again this is wave number three for Cole Halman finds a corner at Itana off the bottom smashes off the top with a huge turn throwing tons of spray back up with a vicious snap two-turn combo big smile on the face of Coral Hoshman and he’s going to extend his lead over Matthew McGill d psycho killer dang dude that was it right there i’m telling you that was the good call Mitchell not just the combination Kaipo the effectiveness of the turns too no unnecessary movement right there in between maneuvers deep bottom turn on both of them and really love the quality of the wave he selected to excellent use of priority right here but the variation of turns this just reminds me of his surfing that he did for CS wins over big Narabine he was doing that turn right there at the end section there in Narabine it was similar to this as well conditions wise it’s pulling them back out every single second of time out there in the water he has a rebate here kypes nice little rebate on the inside here ferrer looks down the line searching for a ramp finds it flops it up in the air right around air reverse for continuing momentum down the line some froth to deal with takes it straight to the face there no problem and he’s going to ride out of that back in that 783 and getting the crowd riled up on the beach he’s giving him chicken skin look him how is this strider check it out i mean it’s just you could see him telegraphing knowing it was coming but the the amount of distance that he threw on that air was ridiculous he he flew 20 ft across the lip line landed and there you know I know there’s all this talk about wave pools and and wave systems and and and giving yourself the reps but that wave was way it was three times the size of any wave in a wave pool so like doing it on a on a bigger wave like that is is so technical so hard and finding a a a ramp and a landing place i mean this is just super impressive beautiful work harnessing the power and then look at how boned out tail high like this is what we came for and I am so stoked to get to see this right now because this is making us all smile as he did on that first wave will he top that 7.83 Mitchell i think so ju just due to the radical nature of the maneuver the progression and we haven’t necessarily seen an air today and that not only was an air it was a radical air too kypo yeah I’m going excellent yeah but you know what it’s easy for me to say that because like just when you see something like that in my mind as the most d maybe the most dangerous surfer in the draw right now or at least one of them as far as the performance level that he’s bringing here he goes woo smash let’s get they give the people what they want yeah I might have to drop the headset and get down on the beach i’m missing the energy down there you saw this kind of surfing right here Mitchell this was insane well I really like the grab roll carve right there by It and then throws in the rotator on a pretty hefty size wave right there towards the end too and the claim obviously one of the best in the world at that too and should be replacing the 7.83 if not very close to it but just the variation once again and we talk about him putting in so much time in the gym it’s definitely noticeable with the power turns Skypes yeah love that grab rail strider and then this full road well you can see his eyes eyeing up the landing as he left the lip line that replay that was a 5.83 big drop here for Tatiana western Web racing down the line gets up into lip with a huge snap for Weston Web answering back gouging down carve for Web lines up a finish roller coaster to finish and applause like I said the energy for Tati is going to be high there’s a coach Ross Williams right there for Tati on a major wave too and look at the size of this thing kipo you know coming around the first section right there a lot of speed into the lip great projection down the line frothy Face does very well just to control her board coming out of the carve and clean things up here on the inside made sure just to finish on her feet and get a completion right there towards the end majority of the points though will be coming from the first turn all the way on the outside major wave critical section and as you can see right here on the outside steep drop Kipo that looked like Sunset Beach but as a left-hander out there comes around the section took her a while to get there but once she did she really made this wave pay and the opportunity to crack this thing open on the outside section major commitment right there kypes i like how much speed she had after this look at her hair fluttering down the line just speeding down the line and that was a tricky section to turn with all that froth on the face sharpie looks good though seems like she has great equipment under her feet and once again just getting the completion she should be getting the better of the exchange right here oh it seems like Yago might have a wave here though kao Dora good looking wave for Yago uh-oh bigger wave big snap off the top nice wall in front of Yago Dori pulls the rail down though on the down carve one more snap building momentum down multiple maneuvers some variety in the line great rail surfing by Yago this wave keeps on giving low road on on the end here claps his hands and his support squad goes wild as well as the beach yago Dar is going to start running away with this one after this number drops yeah and somebody woke up the dragon right there kypo he is awake right now and he’s Check this out and I’m going to give you guys the number for this as we watch this replay so you can appreciate it this is a 9.17 the variation right there kypo grabel Cuddy into the lip once again i mean not only the combination of major maneuvers the flow he was able to keep on this wave right here matched the pace of it had great speed and of course the power aspect of it on the outside how about the size of this wave too how about all the judges from this all the scores from the judges couple of 95s in there throughout the high the low way into the excellent range with that 9.17 yeah welld deserved for sure but man that carve right there was powerful it was intense and truly a masterpiece being painted right here by the youngster from Floripa what incredible surfing well it’s time for us to announce Gabby Bryant there’s a good looking wave for Brian on the comeback here we go gabrielle snaps off the top powerful snap there hangs off the bottom and hangs one off the top again you saw the nice line on this wave when it presented itself hippity Hoppity into the inside section wants a little bit more on the shore break with a little redirect she’s just going to take a jet ski ride in and that’s going to get her right out of combination Mitch yeah what a way to respond to KD2 great first snap right there in the pocket managed the backwash greatly the first two sections and then a third strong turn with the variation out of two more of a carve right there on the back end so should easily be one of the best waves of the heat right there 12.5 heat total is what she’s looking to beat right now but once again look at the way she’s able to bottom turn through the backwash right there keep her composure throughout the turn has to cut it just a bit short then eventually is able to get this second one in very powerful too look at the rooster tail on that kites and then the variation to bring it down just a bit more is going to ride a lot of waves right now italo feeling this one on the right glassy open face already starting to jam down the line loves a backhand rotation so much hype perfect landing his good friend and manager Marcos is celebrating on the beach a signature move for Italo that he can provide on demand incredible execution he’s of course going to get a bunch of waves and that’s why you talk about full rotation this is over rotated full rotation as you see right there he’s landing it with the nose inside more that was beautiful so much loft perfect execution from him you’re going to see in slow motion be able to really break it down you’re going to see his head right there halfway through he’s going to look to the tail and that’s what’s going to bring all that momentum to flip not flip the board but to keep the board rotating all the way around and he overdid it that’s psycho how much control he had on that wave jordy looks like he’s going to have a look right here now rolling into this one nice wall on the back end for Jordy Smith big power hack off the lip perfectly transitioned into another power hack third turn solid right on the money and he’ll just trim this one all the way through to the end section and that last bit of backwash trying to make it difficult to ride away and it will get the best of him but did a lot of damage yeah damage was done look at how calm he is on this bottom turn here massive first turn and this is money coming from behind the section as he was bottom turning just driving through rail the whole time beautiful surfing for him right here quite a bit of a mistake cuz he wanted to finish the wave this is This is going to be a massive score for Jordy great way to answer cleaner wave steeper at second turn so much power driving through it another one this is beautiful surfing for Jordy just fun to see him unload on a running left at this size all starting off with big bottom turns yeah and this is this is what set him up for such a big maneuvers right there look at this bottom turn coming from behind no downtime whatsoever engaging that inside rail stomping on the back foot right there to lift the the nose from getting caught in the water because that wave got pretty steep as he was doing as he was driving through the turn and then right here was a bummer for him cuz that finish is going to take a little bit of points out of that out of that wave cuz it was a great finish you see the good release right there but the wave converges on from into him and often tail high but when he gets so tail high he can turn it into a back roll pretty easily where he’s almost flipping out of it there’s a cool looking front side power carb to show his depth layback blowtail again for Dora for an absolutely devastating combination as he’s looking to go two in a row how about this i mean look at this layback right here this is fullon movie style right there like so much style so much control and finally he got a wave that actually was a excellent scoring wave and he just over surfered once again but now a way better quality wave the speed was there the power of the wave and you’re going to see him bottom turn right here and really going to be able to open up actually kept that um carve really tight and aggressive and then transitioning right here just look at his eyes iring it down the close out section he’s going to go for a massive layback big hammer there there’s the blow tail there’s the score a 933 sammy Poo looking down the line looking for Ram finds it stomps that landing big rotation he says that’s a three-pointer give it to me crowd loves it they should he dropped a 6.5 for his previous there so this should be right around that range and he’s asking for more noise for this right here well gained a lot of speed was eyeing you know the section down the line and a big rotation too lands in the flats you know nearly loses it in terms of control right there at the end i love the claim though count it it was in but as you see right here the amount of speed that he garnered with those pumps at the beginning a full route as Chris would call it that was definitely a 540 straight away all the way to the beach and his positioning on top of his board is as clean as it gets yeah that JS Industries is looking good on the feet of Sammy Poop was waiting for that score but looks like Medina wants to keep things rolling catching over 10 waves now setting up the punt gets there early for the big rotation above the lip the magic man Gabriel Medina during that recap Yagodora went right and saw a huge ramp absolutely incredible inverted upside down backside full rotation from Yago not many guys on tour could do this Jesse wow look at the how inverted that is and what made this air so impressive it’s how um high his stay here’s some replays we’re going to start with John John right here here we go winding up big alleyoop and sticks the roof are you kidding me oh we went away and we came back to some delightful news probably feeling like you know a champion it’s just really cool how’s this start for Ethalo Ferrer talk about stomping it Mitchell that’ll be the best number in this heat so far but Ian’s already answering snap and then a two for one getting back to the lip for a float hanging in there and he will get the completion okay that was interesting as soon as you’re expecting Oh he’s going to get a little bonus section right there bonus reform wraps it rebounds off the water patrol snaps it on the inside fades out well done for Gentio finding a lot of energy on that last wave here goes Caroline nice carve winds up off the bottom needs to attack this does so with the backwash manages that turn one more snap for Caroline working down the line foam climb there maybe a little bit more on the inside for Caroline marks searching for a connection into the shore break three nice turns for Caroline and she’s going to get a little bonus on the inside as she redirects for a bank on the backhand fist pump did she turn the Heat needs a 7.43 mitchell I think it’s the best way with the Heat i think she attacks his first corner i mean you know she comes up into this next one throws the fins out has a little drama with the backwash and then finishes on the inside and then takes it all the way to the beach and bangs it again from that angle I can definitely see it being a lot more the second turn specifically Kypo lays it on rail fully engaged a lot of commitment there so say she needs the 75 it right around there i think this extra little turn on the inside too was pretty crucial to her getting the score or not um but the commitment to the two turns on the outside specifically the second one that one she kind of missed just a little bit but look at the way she’s able to engage the rail here for the second one whack in the pocket from the other angle it didn’t seem like she got that much engagement from the front angle it looked way better yeah I think uh I I think she did really well on this wave and and found herself back into the heat um proper proper wave out the back three turns you know the work was done before she even had to milk to the inside tricky wave to ride too a lot of backwash a lot of movement on that wave and 3 minutes to go very backfooted surfer mostly also because she’s from Hale Eva oh I see um Carissa up and riding glassy open face big opportunity carissa drills it off the lip hard off the bottom and lays into a hammer of a turn and that was a lethal combination from world number one and that was a huge mistake from Betty Lou cuz I think she had priority on that and let that one go and Carissa did damage on that so much drive throughout those turns as you see right here nice clean wave doubled up and see how much drive she gets on that first turn and right here just unleashing really pushing hard at rail um perfect clean cut throughout the wave and yeah that was that was an amazing wave for me this is going to be probably on the best wave of the heat so far and probably excellent another big wind up it looks like she didn’t want to let any bit of that section go wasted she drilled it he could tell by her wind up too she was putting everything she had into that finish mitchell Ross put his acai down and Oh but Ryan maybe is going to answer back here aral sets up his first hook absolutely drills it how about that lean back hammer to shut it down a tidy two-turn combo and all the athletes appreciated that exchange that’s the best day ever when you’re up there you watch the exchanges go down and you see how into it and what fans the athletes are themselves and you watch their excitement in the scores and watching the the the the scores drop and you know what they all come up with their own scores in their heads and they’re telling each other and then you know this is this part is really fun and this was brilliant from Ryan man that’s what I’m talking about right here how he’s able to open up and knife it like he’s just as good as anyone on rail and just That’s a It’s a dream wave just two major maneuvers on rail the whole time amazing and clean bottom turns just perfect reading wave for Ryan so it’s going to be so fun to watch these scores come across so is John John here’s a replay this happened during the break well and he’s looking to take the lead and it seemed like he did it ko big turn right there from Jon John and a strong third one and he is just on a roll on this wave right here finding a wave that offered up multiple sections and you can see right there with the body language he loved that one that body language told me take that Grom because John John is on the comeback over Baron Mia taking a look at this replay one more time talking about critical surfing mama Mia I like this one kypo a lot of strong turns right there and a combination of major maneuvers his technique on the back end has improved so much over the last few years i think people forget how good of a complete surfer he is top two wave scores here’s Baron live action on the comeback looking down the line again he needs something spectacular to finish and he’s saying give it to me he’s feeling it we got to catch up with that wave because Baron we don’t see Baron no celebrate like that well a good looking wave steep section awesome first turn from Baron Mamia and a strong second one too wow goes up for the third one and you know it was a combination of strong maneuvers the first two definitely as critical as they possibly could have gotten and you look at the drone angle right here deep bottom turn that first turn was just precious the second one strong as well oh man wave’s not as big as Jon John’s but it doesn’t have to be the score that Jon John got 8.93 for Jon John Florence baron needs a 8.27 and that’s a great start on his way and he finished this in a spectacular fashion great flow and the composure too needing a score right now if he gets it he’s got to be very stoked with the way he competed in this one and was just able to maintain a sense of calm out there in the water in a moment of difficulty kaipo some great stuff meanwhile Ethan behind him great opening snap right in the pocket excellent second turn as well looking to better a low six and is able to fit in a floater up the end it’s a heat steel and you need to apply pressure as early as possible how’s this gem for Caitlyn Simmers setting up her first turn a nice swing through the backwash setup works she wants a ramp she’s got a big wind up as she goes off the lift into a float so much air under that course design the finishing move Jesse yeah smart surfing here in the beginning um just keeping her rail going and keeping the speed to set up for this right here huge lip line kind of going under the lip upside down and we had glimpse of that but not completion from her earlier um in the event but now just nailing right there that was perfect execution and the judges are going to love that i’m calling one of the the you know moments of the event right there i feel like her coming up underneath it right here look where she places her board and she’s literally inverted then pushes out in front of it just cat reflexes right there just pushing to come down i mean there’s a lot that goes on into that right there this just happened during the break that was impressive right there rode him off i thought he was just going on the wrong wave had no time whatsoever but eyeing it down straight from straight from takeoff full rotation and look how much gap he had in between the air and the landing that was just impressive from Yago one of his best buddies is one of the best skaters in the world Pedro Baros they might say “Hey he landed bolts he landed so perfectly so smooth it comes in at a 10-point ride.” And the fans are absolutely bump so oh Jack’s coming wow fifth wave for Jack Robinson thanks to the sky and falling from the clouds Jack Robinson with a massive front side air strong but look at this jack Robinson lining this up he sees the section gets that wow so huge pushes through the f the foam there that was amazing that was one of the biggest straight airs I’ve seen of the year i mean Lucas you’ve surfed out here a million times you know the ramps out there but right there that was perfect but did you see the land like I love you how you what you said about his boards it’s just like you see how hard he landed on the board and he doesn’t care oh it’s going to break no he just landed i want to make this this maneuver right off the buzzer let’s take a look at Felipe Toledo oh unsurprising activating pumping into the tube could have an exit driving and somehow miraculously comes out of nowhere a Sakarama surprise from Kaioi let’s check it out on the replay kyle deep in the barrel cavern headlamp on spelunking through there finds the exit sees the little light at the end of the tunnel and is able to find it here we go again ebelli deep in the barrel gonzo way behind the foam ball he’s able to find that little ray of light and able to aim for it gets the exit and he Here we go one more time slow motion and you can really appreciate you know what this is this is a perfect coin ride kaio a rare perfect 10 in front of this rockus Brazilian crowd they’re loving it we’re loving it the judges loving it nice and clean across the board all five of our judges throwing out that perfect number andre Agassi was well aware of that throughout his tennis career where he had the crowd play into his hands as we have a big bottom turn attacking the big section is Callum Robson throwing down a top turn into float on the transition and now he’ll fade his last wave gave him a nice solid run through this little river to give him an end section he’ll hang in there little front side slash just to get a final move in but very different approach from Medina goofy verse regular and Callum’s got a different very unique style low and compact and this is a vicious first turn look at the rail work just in the lip the very vertical section to be able to do that type of carve in that section very well done the second turn a little bit more of a floater move i would have loved to see a little bit more of a release out of there to really make it into that excellent range i think it’s still going to be a great score he’s going to get the lead from Gabriel Medina you look at what Gabriel Medina was able to do on his 75 snap to big layback carve this one now the layback carve first then with the extra floater wasn’t like we had seen a million of those types of waves that day it was such a wonderful surprise especially for Ebelli quick whip off the lip for Sammy Poop belts it nice and tight in the pocket and he will stay on his feet there’s his connection with the crowd poop is going to see a lead change here yes for sure uh speed power and flow part of the criteria ton of speed coming out of Sammy Poopo on that wave i mean electrified the lip every time he’s coming out of the maneuver super quick and fast i mean he packed those moves in didn’t look rushed very responsive in the surfboard see right there hooks it super quick comes out he was able to put his board back under his feet two in a row and then a third again just punctuates that back foot into the lip powerful move there that’s also part of the criteria is that power so speed power and flow definitely on showcase in this wave nice work there done for Poop more vertical approach which adds difficulty to the maneuver getting some release so showcasing the variety all of those elements are part of the criteria so he is hitting it to a tea and then use that crowd tap into it um and then the speed the power that he was able to do especially that last move where he really punched it into the lip he wasn’t scared to put everything into it as he got a little chip into this section backside full rotation for Sammy Poop watch out for this kid man i feel like he is Wasn’t an easy takeoff gets the wedge though and yeah you’re right it goes in look at this section here punches it all the way around and the landing out down in the transition of the wave wouldn’t say it totally into the flats and that’s actually probably a really good place to land you get a little transition to land that tail down so it’s not a very hard landing all the way around in the spin didn’t quite have the amplitude I guess but the way he you pull those moves off a lot of times you got to punch it out towards the beach in order to get the rotation and stay in the wave a lot of times you can do a flyway but look at that just lands right on that little cushion of white water and transition of the wave he’s kind of sees that end result you know of course the cliche marathon not a sprint feel like that’s kind of the mindset that Ethalo has been in his team told him as he goes out there have fun do that do things like that that is when Ito starts to thrive as we check it out in the replay you can really see the fact that he does a really nice turn but his spin as he looks down the line is a full rotation gets it all the way back around fully lands it points those towards the beach and that spin that rotation that he’s able to achieve on the back end it was so impressive and it’s really impressive to watch this in slow motion and you can see the leverage on the front foot the back foot pushing back down gets that rotation around Chris and he’s done it time and time again it’s a go-to maneuver and it always Gardner is a score yeah and you know just to add to the difficulty there the tail kind of going higher than his than his head you know that just adds the element of difficulty that the judges want to see his numbers from his losses would have beat 80% of the rest of the heat’s numbers he was getting you know crazy 16 17 18 point totals big clean connected front side carve layback hammer from Connor Olirri he better apologize to that wave you know what’s crazy too is that he is a big kid how quick he is on backhand sections but so much time on these enjoyable cars Pete yeah and it just looks like you know you talk about the confidence in his equipment he’s just gotten dialed in on the boards that work for him now uh which has given him this confidence i mean and again wave choices there impeccable he’s got this wave little smaller wave but look at the juice and the and the cleanliness of the face uh and this one feels like another um uplifting number to what he has already just by you know the virtue of that was just vicious and a decided advantage to Jackson Baker both these surfers regular foot so we’ll see a backhand display right there was a powerful hack followed by a second callum Robson throwing hammers at the wall that was a contrast as we look at this replay again between the two it was all about timing for Jackson Baker it’s all about positioning and power for Callum Robson two big exaggerated backhand re-entries we can see it right here look at this pushes hard tons of spray flying off the lips the board skips out there’s so much power lines up again lot of leverage on the bottom turn and even more on the toes as he kicks it off the top for turn number two that was some powerful surfing so nice contrast between the timing of Jackson Baker sammy definitely a lot of energy really lively miguel Poo super calm very confident he’s kind of been that mentor this year for a lot of the younger Brazilians from his brother to Joanka here comes Italo looking to change things up he’s going to his secret weapon full rotation on the back hand right into a rapid cut back it’s not over he still has some room left and he slams it shut okay he’s asking for an 817 i don’t know if he’s asking for it but he’s surfing to it let’s take another look oh he saw it coming a mile away again out into the flats so it wasn’t a critical section to land in but man that was so clean just ultimately carrying a ton of speed and then the finish move yeah um this is a good wave has to be excellent to turn the heat though [Music] again from the drone view so well done and that’s why Italo is so dangerous cuz it his consistency in pulling those types of move off with amplitude is just so amazing it is so tough to do and I suppose the critique that you’re giving often times he’ll do this on a big closeout section that’s where it goes excellent this one was beautifully done and lands perfect but didn’t have that big hollow section or the flats to land on exactly so again the judges take to note the sections you’re doing these maneuvers on to appear in the Ripcur WSL finals but you know win here of course would change all that here we go answering right back toed upside down throwing spray into the sky working his way to this inside section blasts the finish releases the fins the crowd goes wild look at how clean Felipe Toledo’s wave is and look at this action now this wave tapered off a lot more offering Felipe Toledo time to set up time that little backside lip slide and that finish timing with the white water as well for the little accentuation look at this beautiful surfing extension why not he pokes the nose on the way down doesn’t bother him at all sets back up and now this wave really tapers off Chris so it allows him time to set up look down the line spot his line lip glide throws the fins explosion little bit of backwash no problem for Felipe Toedo excellent surfing the score comes through huge listen to the crowd and there’s a saying uh in Brazil when their soccer team won the World Cup the chant was tetra tetra meaning for Pete and right now trying to stand in the way of that tetra is Yagodora three laser sharp turns finishes with a fourth really smart surfing by Yagodora right here backing up getting another number now this is going to apply mental pressure to Felipe Toledo and I feel what Yago Doro is going to do is get these numbers put that pressure on Toledo and try to get Toledo to surf outside of his skin take a look at this replay and this was a beautiful wave with a lot of opportunity opens up this time with that layback hack another snap projection down the line has more time to bring that one all the way around but nicely combos that up so beautiful arcing turn at the end and comboing up again starting now with that big layback slash instead of ending there way more risk at the beginning of the wave this is a projection down the line you can see he keeps on his tow rail and then this is very impressive all the way around launches it right into a bottom turn and combos it up for the finish speed power flow that wave had it all and for Felipe 2021 while it was his majorly successful year still a heartbreaking finish so trying to live up to what feels like destiny right now toed searing three turn combination adds a fourth lays down here’s the cheers that is going to make this a heat you can see Felipe Toledo just twitchy right here big vertical snap right there gets a little bit caught on the heels and he’s trying to force a few turns in doing a great job of getting multiple maneuvers in and gets this one but you see not matching exactly the pace of the wave for that clean finish now he’s not going to get discounted for that but I’m seeing you know an urgency from Felipe Kedo’s surfing as we look at these replay the speed and the power is there the only the only subtle thing that you could take away maybe is just a little bit of the flow because you saw you know some some rails in the water a little bit of spray off the board of course that is you know that is really digging deep into what was an you know expertly a perfect surf wave he couldn’t have done any more on this wave well yeah we you can really analyze it in slow motion here and it’s just the beautiful surfing and the technique superior technique actually from Filipe Toledo we are one ocean love to see it and right back at it live action from Sakura the Oi Rio Pro presented by Corona Rolls on Chris Cotay here with Kaipo Guerrero here we go the replay of Felipe Toedo so this is quality versus quantity two big vertical bangs for Felipe Toledo now that was excellent surfing why because of this connectivity here carved shows a ton of spray there and this finish again straight up straight down dynamic surfing in a high risk position on the wave and the completion he’s going to get rewarded for that you know that’s one of those waves that in the moment uh you know it’s it’s great looks like there’s some lumps coming let’s see if this can turn into anything for Carissa Moore one last chance looks like she’s taking a paddle carissa Moore looking for a 641 has some to work with here big opening snap and another wow hangs on carissa Moore a rare claim from our she take a look back at one of the highest single wave scores of the entire event a 9.5 at the exact moment she needed it leave it to Carissa Moore to do exactly what she needs to do yeah a lot just the surfing the power the extension through the turns brings a 10 as well to these heats one more look here Pete just look at the timing where he uses that ramp it’s a solid overhead wave and just perfectly placed technique impeccable no grab board stays right stuck to his feet looked like the whole time he was going to make that incredible it really truly is incredible i don’t know how he does it throwing down a 10 and he’s up again heading that same direction backhand float big vert with an absolute hammer to follow toed shutting this heat down wow beating Sammy at his own game going now to turns and just electric so quick in transition one more look here Pete wow again that projection floater will push them in perfect position for that just beautiful hook and then again more vertical again variety shuts it down clean three solid moves and he knows it that’s going to be another great number just watch the technique here again the float compresses and jumps off the lip carries that speed into the section there straight off the bottom right in the most vertical section just hooks it throws water off the rail right back into those bottom turn again vertical more vertical on that one getting the twist of the fins out the back and then just a nice clean finish and another excellent number felipe Toledo is feeling it in this final two minutes to go here comes Sammy Poop big snap he’ll control that one second move nice and powerful and loose his best score so far of the final about to get locked in with a minute 45 to go you know smaller wave but these two snaps beautiful just a Christmas tree of water twice out the back nice and loose you know that’s what he’s capable of and I think we’ll see him in some more finals in his career and it won’t be long till you see him in the as a champion but look at that technique again that aggression in the lip and the speed he carries you know you do something a big turn like that a lot of times your speed drops off but not for Sammy Poop or even for Pelita for that matter keep the board but talk about swinging the board chris Moore right behind her it looks like second wave of the set a little bit bigger and a little bit more dynamic and Chrisa finishes off her ride so she’s going to maintain that lead big story though did Keely Andrew do enough for that 5.04 keely Andrew goes to second joan DeFay drops to third as we take a look at Carissa Moore’s last wave oh my gosh carissa Moore just dropped another excellent score i think this is the best wave of the heat 7.5 right now is the benchmark but just the commitment that Carissa showed on that first turn was absolutely amazing it’s going to be go time for Koh and Dino adrian de Sza second place priority over Andino this is going to be a decision time for both of the surfers neither one of them taken the corner taken by Yagodora our heat leader there’s a layback snap to begin with patient off the bottom throws the fins 180 there spins right back around looking electrified yago wow improve his situation i love the bottom turn leading into this next maneuver watch how low he gets jams it off the bottom kicks the tile out control absolute control right there from Yagodora with a 3.53 to move into second place which Sebastian Zets currently occupies on his last wave with a 5.37 clearly out in front Felipe Toledo with surfing like that so let’s see if he just improved upon his 5.57 but he’s looking on fire out here absolutely on fire he just looks better and better and better every time he catches a wave and uh I think the crowd are loving it you know this kid is uh obviously Gabriel Medina probably the best as far as or the most famous as far as Brazilian surfers go but Felipe right behind him there gabriel Medina Philip Toledo and Ilo Ferrer those guys are super dangerous let’s have a look at Felipe’s wave bang through the lip what a snap there from Toledo and again through the lip for maneuver number three three solid turns and that’s going to be a fantastic score it’s going to better his 5.57 it’s going to extend his lead and put a little bit of pressure on Sebass and Maras look at the size of these sets coming through now the surf is significantly bigger than when we first arrived this morning so it’s great to see the forecast following as it should and here’s Conor Coffin big overhead wave you have a Conor coffin almost a carbon copy of his first wave but bigger and more critical circling on that second closeout turn so 583 was the benchmark the judges will review that jet ski will help you out where you make those mistakes and get you back out there as we look at Connor Coffin here’s the big money turn snaps it in the pocket it was actually the turn and the snap was kind of a little bit earlier than than it was needed to be look when you see he hits it and there’s that moment where he just hangs there waits for it all to come around him i enjoy this this overlapping format Bon especially when the surf consistent a lot of opportunity to cause some exciting waves yeah it gives us a lot to see there’s always something going on and Wayne Carmichael just managing a Bronco type rodeo ride there to get this heat started weaving his way back in now he’s going to look for the setup as he goes down the step a glassy face to work with opens the shoulders extends the rail around for a deep bottom turn pushes the tail out perfect afternoon and this is the roll in here of wave car Michael’s wave still waiting on that score to drop in and he did well to get over the bumps the roll in was not exactly what it was that was some kind of Bronco ride yeah as he waits now and you see him drive off the top beautiful top turn this is going to be a big score look at the face in front of him and he just charges at that lip and looks like Jordy Smith behind him dreamy wall squares up the bottom turn big punch out of L there for the South African world number five up and over floats that one down looking to drop a 617 to extend his lead over Freestone 5 minutes remaining job done i would say when you get those clean faces and it’s smooth and it’s silky and you’ve got the opportunity to lay the rail you’ve got to you’ve got to capitalize on that but this one’s help so nice these bottom turns and approaches wow and then you get that little beat oh yeah the wave was like breathing to allow him into it oh that was one of the waves of the day yeah i’m thinking I’m thinking of of of WDE’s 85 and I feel like that maneuver there is perhaps the best maneuver of the day so far backed up with the little floater got a little uncomfortable in the floater for a second there that wasn’t as clean here is Toledo’s first shot winds up off the bottom right by Slater snaps up in the lip double pump off the bottom again for Felipe throws it in the air lands Bolts full completion and hits the lip again with some quick feet full rotation two off the tops that’s the way to kick off a heat that wind is just basically going to stick his board to his feet like glue let’s have a look at this right in front of Kelly bottom turn nice little snap there that was just a setup move because he knew the section was coming into the air perfect landing there from Filipe Toledo and finished off strong this kid is going to be hard to beat out here on this wave just the the speed of the wave itself i mean it’s not a slow wave you need to have a lot of down the line speed you you know even those airs you got to cover a lot of distance to get around that section so what an opening wave there from Toledo at the moment kelly needing an 8.35 that’s definitely uh in within his score line here we go here he goes kelly Slater eases off the bottom stalling for the barrel finds his way into the barrel threads through that first section second section for Kelly Slater and he comes out answering back pointing to the beach let’s get to Strider for the crowd reaction to that wave strider here’s a replay of Kelly Slater yeah you know look at him dragging that hand slowing himself down pulls up into the barrel nice and high drives through that next section and just sneaks through the doggy door pointing at the crowd saying “Yep Felipe got a 9.1 what is this going to come in as?” Let’s see needs to be nice and deep needs to disappear so far right there that second section completely disappeared i think you know the judges are very critical with tube riding Kypo and we got a ski down felipe Toedo looking down the line pulling into the barrel toed threats through that section and answers back to Slater just like that wow we’re not calling it the Super Heat for nothing no exactly right i mean these two guys I wish uh we could give them another hour but this definitely does not disappoint it’s almost like Kelly brings the best out of Felipe and Felipe brings the best out of Kelly that deficit between that 9.5 and the 9 and the 9.17 on the backup but this is the backup right here what a effort to get in there and get out oh that was a good barrel and and a a radical drop as well i mean the tube we can see the jet ski in the foreground getting absolute donuts since you were traveling your days a few entouragees around these days we see Julian getting one up the gates beautiful driving bottom turn to get up and over that section the 4.34 is what he requires he’s standing tall he’s asking the question he has stomped that i love that bottom turn yeah easily he’s he’s known as having one of the very best bottom turns in the business see your little pump there and into a liper holds it and then see how low he got there and just drives it up and over that limb clean precise beautiful surfing from Julian here’s the first turn and you see a little free fall there and watch how low he gets see there and how he holds the rail holds it holds it and that beautiful technique fins out and just timing was exquisite on that one medina is the reason that a lot of these folks come out pots medina mania is rampant in Sakura in all of Brazil gloandino carve barrel nice threading through the section lipline glide goes for the completion there bye-bye to the 2.57 that he has a back as a backup and he is going to extend his lead over David Silva in the red heat shows a lot of passion let’s have a look at this wave here from Andino beautiful rail turn i like the way he slows himself down gets nice and tucked in under that lip and then into that beautiful lip line float i mean three solid maneuvers wasn’t a deep barrel but set up nicely with that sliding bottom turn just tucks up nicely up into the pocket and then that midface lip line float that he sort of kept a lot of speed and you can see how happy he was finishing that wave off the first real wave of substance and uh well he needs it cuz uh David Silva just dropped a 5.0 and Koh just with a 4.9 2.57 so a bit of a slow bit of a slow heat so far having known from experiences last year and what this swell magnet the SAM is what it was capable of producing the round tails are still getting used and some step ups as you said off the bottom back off the top for Sally Fitz Gibbons now looking for an end section front side wrap from the Australian there’s a nice tag to finish off for her she’s looking strong building up momentum 617 and a 2.0 so far she’s locked in wave number three she’s made 11 finals for four championship victories and here goes Sally on that replay snaps out of the top quick short snap cuz the wave was running off she wanted to make sure she was out in front of it so she could get a big wrap like that and that wrap timed the close out the third turn perfectly great angle here first snap out of the top and then pumps to keep the speed line and keep herself in front of that so she can get that big round turn and then a beautiful closeout turn into a little foam hit at the end there on that last one two turns fell on the third it now means that Wilson requires 934 if he wants to go into lead he has priority he’s got time for two more he can get it on one if he goes big on this one here he is telegraphing something down the line you know he’s going to go big you know he’s going to go hard big rotation that’s what he’s been waiting for fourth attempt he lands one now things get interesting then he had two alioop attempts and then this one pumping driving waiting waiting sees the ramp hits it spins beautifully nice tail high whip let’s look at this angle this should be great Brad to the air just and the just so clean they make it look so easy what are the judges going to think here it is on the replay look at that no grab beautiful rotation of the body so balanced lands it clean that’s going to be a great score 11.17 required you can actually break it on this wave looking for the tube time it’s a beautiful little corner it comes out nice and clean you set it up she can find the tube out there and then shuts down a closeout turn this is a great comeback wave for Oh exactly what the doctor ordered that one that was really well done and we knew with that with that experience she has with the tube growing up on a point break nobody can ride the barrel as good as Steph here she goes dropping in we’re looking at it from sort of side on here she pulls in deep in the tube nice couple of little sections almost and then fades down to buy some time into the closeout re-entry gives it a little little bit of style as she always does here this is the angle how deep does she get nice and deep for that moment there best wave of the heat so far on calling it will be interesting to see how judges respond because that’s the first completed tube ride we’ve seen so we’ll see how much they appreciate that we know that this break is known for it and in theory that’s what you should be doing it’s like when you go to pipeline and it’s all about the tube coming here really on this wave is all about the tube as we look at that angle from the WSL house how deep and beautiful always like perfect on her positioning when it comes to tube riding you Steph Gilmore hund skills on the sambar wow that was a great comeback wave there from Fria Morice was not rattled at all when you heard that 733 from Felipe Toledo but Toledo continues to charge with a big snap there a little air drop back into the second throws the tail lighting spins it back around hardway and goes complete that was beautiful surfing by Felipe T and that’s exactly what he’s surfing like first turn big snap with a free fall drop and then this turn right here are you kidding me perfect control allah Koh and Dino did one yesterday that looked very similar and this morning I should say and right there riding backwards spinning the board around absolute control fipe Toledo looking sharp here answering back to Frederrico Maras’s opening ride opening ride for Maras a 7.17 but when I see this right here I say riding to fakey that’s tail forward and then spinning out the hard way naturally you would spin on your toes but he’s able to spin out on his heels yeah in fantastic form as well by the way he’s just uh looks like to me he’s just starting to click at the right time but Jordi Smith talking about clicking at the right time started off with a 7.83 this is his second wave we’ll get you a replay of wave number one smith in the barrel finds the exit there and backs up that 7.83 quite nicely in the opening third of this heat actually in the first 5 minutes of this heat against Kohi Andino yeah absolutely right i mean that was probably the best tube we’ve seen all day I think here’s a replay of the barrel yeah straight into the tube i mean this guy’s no stranger to tube riding growing up in South Africa Mosamb beek is one of his favorite little horns to go and surf and these kind of waves are on tap over there jordi Smith nice barrel jordi Smith with his attention to this wave looking down the line and Smith decides to pull back and maintain his priority over Felipe Toledo in the barrel catches the corner there launches a big straight air to find it and gives us the gim on the net he’s the hunting glass that was insane right there jordi Smith with priority just a little bit too deep and Felipe Toledo gets the crowd involved from the get-go that was one of my favorite airs I’ve seen this entire event the ability to be able to control the body through the air and land in in the fashion that he did look at this one right here slides up into the barrel beautiful little tube ride and then bing just flies through the air lands nice and clean and straight in transition that’s as good as it gets i mean to land a big air like that and to go straight into that next maneuver without having to shuffle your feet i like the little tube right as well beautiful little barrel and then right here bingo i mean that is 6 to 8t out of the top of the wave and finishes strong game on says Filipe Toledo slow motion action to really appreciate what Felipe Toledo just did up in the air lofty flying lands stomps the landing but this is incredible just to get back up in the lip there i love that mana live action with Felipe Toedo getting loose there big explosion and Toledo rides out of that climb to the lip after throwing the tail 180 and the crowd loves it [Applause] the chanting on the beach for Felipe Toledo here representing Brazil a proud surf nation we talk about the Brazilian storm we talk about the numerous talents coming out of Brazil filipe Toledo right on the top of the pack here look at the control look at that control right there from Toledo and then to get that board back up into the lip without missing a beat hits a bit of a wobble slides a tail gives that an extra little tweak and then flies through the air on that last maneuver and uh oh my gosh I think we’re going to see another solid score from Felipe Toledo we know that’s where the upsets happen you know that’s where you’re sent home early and you’ve got a lot of time to think about your mistakes y if you get into that second round so you got to bypass that deadly second round and this guy wants to do just that every time toed two big whipping snaps gets to that inside section so that was a one two three punch from Toed he likes it i think the judge is going to react in kind with him kind of checking off everything that they have laid out in that criteria well that was uh that was three solid maneuvers there showed commitment on each occasion we got a P it from the start yeah so again drags right in you can see the red jersey there doesn’t have the clean exit but this maneuver here that is a very difficult section to hit and DA now behind him uses his priority you see something special in this wave squares off the bottom there’s a big powerful hack into the pocket from Doza a free falling re-entry out the lip he’s just saying “I’ve getting the job done here.” What do you think about that that was amazing it really was i mean the quickness that he was able to transition from that snap which again he didn’t Sometimes you have to cut those turns short he timed it perfectly i mean again laid into that turn the big layback gap and then midface bottom turn to get back to the lift gets the drift and then boom into that close out section the big float so good variety in those two maneuvers and again this is what I was talking about the opportunity for Yinga to put some separation between himself and Adriano and this is a great looking wave big late hit up off the top and that was beautiful and he loves it and he knows it considering what we saw from Adriano’s eight this uh would be very similar score line i mean that last move was so committed so late see how he hits it and carves off the lip as it’s coming down on top of him i love it you think he’s happy about that one well and again you know you take those opportunities with the mistake from uh Adriano um he he took that wave got a point two he had priority that would have been an opportunity to put like a five or a six much different scenario for Ingoa now he is going to add points he’s going to add a big number to the score line and he’s going to put some off and while we were away I feel like we may have missed something very special pete Mel this looks like a uh away it could be hospital oh yeah well that’s exactly it i mean he has been training there very deep section look at this oh my goodness he knew he was coming out of that one this one looking more into it look at how intense that wave is that’s the kind of thing that judges want to see is the intensity and the back dooring from the section and driving through it it’s exactly what uh the head judge had mentioned again this morning so this is going to be a great number looking at a 757 in order to turn himself into the number one position in this heat with four minutes to go he wants to ride a bunch of ways and another example there was exactly what I was talking about as you see here first we’re going to watch Jawan Roo on his back end and he just drops in great technique he’s got a beautiful barrel and it looks like the conditions again the waves are starting to really turn on here with that offshore you know you’re going to see the tide switch score has come in it’s a 7.67 dramatic scenes here from Bina in the corner jawan Deroo who has been trading this whole heat now we’ll have to sit back and watch from behind as Sebass calls in another section he’s still going he’s out ladies and gentlemen 4 seconds remaining looking for an 8.04 on that wave pete that’s going to be the best barrel of the day i would have to say it he was going to get another opportunity but this is what happened well again so he is pretty darn deep here that wave goes fairly intense and again a very clean exit you know if you were to compare sizes of waves you would have to say that it wasn’t the biggest set wave but you know what that thing ran he maximized the barrel time still a question mark though you know to me it’s still a question mark trying to avoid that 25th place as we wait for someone to crack this heat wide open tomas Hermes is deep disappeared and reappears wow tomas Air Maze out of nowhere finding the gem straight off the jetty the crowd definitely eating that one up so Tomas Hermes May now just as we thought this heat was uh kind of getting a little bit lethargic huge score across the board tomas Hermes drops a 9.07 so right now Thomas Hermes a 9.07 one of the best waves of this event connor now in a combo situation now you can see Connor having a look at that wave thomas driving through the section super deep up and over the foam ball and then reappears right at the end sneaks out of it on top of that hands up above and why not what a wave there from Thomas Hermes up and over that section beautiful positioning and sneaks out saying what else do I have to do scores every judge over nine points nine points or more 9.2 29.3 was the highest average out to a 9.07 wowers and just like that Connor coffin in a combo situation not the good combo by the way thank you for your time we’ll let you get back in the heat and we’ll let you guys get back in the heat of the set waves thanks guys fabio sorry I should say Fabio’s son this is Yavea just trying to find a line through this inside section now it rifles off the bank and he comes through that section listen to the crowd punctuated with a big freef fall floater yanga the crowd erupts crazy and he is like well he’s just he knows it he’s having a ball out here by that’s going to go excellent um you know and he and the crowd right there you see Jordy over his shoulder what just happened what just happened then you know the beginning of that wave he was kind of out running it and then that next section comes but you know what i think the best part of that wave was the close out smash he does watch this takes off again technique trying to slow down on the wave doesn’t really look like it’s going to barrel too much but the next section down the line he sees it gets himself into that tripod position and is super deep spit out but then look at this just tags it and drifts how does he pull that off that is crazy stuff that is going to be a gigantic number again looking at it inside the barrel here let’s see if we can keep our eye on him he even disappears from view on that angle but this here where the drift on that section that is what you call a critical section we have seen surfers hit it time and time again their boards are breaking in two but he keeps it together somehow pulls that one off again that technique everything moving forward down the line this waves running down the line we could even see a perfect score we’ll see it’s been tough to find 10-point rides but this is pretty darn close that end maneuver like you said Pete we’ve seen so many surfers attempted and just be lit up by that white water somehow even with that drift and direction change on that tail he manages to hold on and we are going to see I’m going to say the biggest score of the event dropped you were mentioning could be perfect all day of course yeah look at this this is Marihas steep on the foam ball he comes in from behind that section we’re going to have another look at that one in a moment but man that was just a great barrel ride a perfect line through that foam ball for Feder Rica Maras and what a way to open up your round three wow through the back door of the garage out the front door in a huge way as that wave just coughed i would say belched on the way out magnify to the judges to the crowd to yourself as he climbed over that foam ball section completely behind it glides over it that is good stuff there and a great start for Frederick Mar he’s going to go excellent and he is going to have the best you know I I’ve seen him uh you know I saw him win an event in Fiji on the way home from the airport bought his sister a really nice present that will most likely last her for a long time here we go during the interview this is what made the crowd go wild yeah sebastian Zidz comes from nowhere to get a nice little barrel checks it hits the brakes pulls right back in and somehow comes out of that one and that is the spontaneity of Sebastian Z that’s why we love watching him as I said before his completion rate maybe not as good as Thomas Hermes but he is exciting to watch and as you said both in and out of the water and entertainer although he’s uh probably one of the best out here he’s also had some mixed results we’ve got a wedge for John Florence little bit late on the takeoff gets around this section coiling it up the Cobra will strike it does john Florence blasting the perfectly rotated 540 landing straight towards the beach you saw the tail release whips it around there’s John Florence in a nutshell clutch maneuver so smooth you That was an extended pull back of the bone when he launched the arrow it aimed you knew you know once he got caught behind the section didn’t really He missed that section now he knows he’s got to do something special widens the stance perfect spin perfect landing no glitches whatsoever on that maneuver so John John Florence about to lock in something special and you watch the confidence right now just go through the roof for John John Florence 15 seconds to go more business in the lineup john Florence again coiling up big vertical snap releasing the tail now hammering this oncoming section rides out he does and there goes the crowd i tell you these fans they know a a thing or two about good surfing they love what they’re seeing from John Florence the crow the the sound is just as loud when John goes than as when Miguel goes and he’s having a look here it goes the John John Florence show is on again speed down the line up into the air florence goes upside down the miracle worker somehow inverted upside down nails the front three reverts out in the white water how does he do it look at this one biggest set wave flying along here getting it set wides widens the stance and goes upside down no grab and just lands perfectly so John John Florence showing us why he has got two world titles under his belt and is starting to crank it up are you kidding me he’s upside down landing in the white we know she’s capable of huge things just need to be given that chance here goes Nikki on her back hand big opening snap releasing the fins comes around a quick section up into the limp a huge finishing snap floater combo for Nikki Van Djk the backside hit of the contest so far look at all one motion too beautiful bottom turn here his first maneuver critical stuff throwing a lot of spray and then straight off the bottom into that lip met it halfway and just really launched off it incredible stuff for Nikki Van Djk this is going to be a great score i wouldn’t have minded a fist pump right there at the end of that just to sell it a little bit no claim bonus there for Nikki Van Djk she on her backside as she comes through the inside section now she will looking for that strong finish that opportunity missed meanwhile the Brazilian Savannah Lim on the outside going for the big floater wow can she hold on she does see this is finals day you got to cut loose you got to go big sana Lima knows that that is what she does she loves to go big almost to her demise sometimes you know she’ll go so big that she’ll end up falling not today she pulled that one off so this is going to be a great match up here between at this point in time Lucky Peterson and Savannah Lima as we see the replays yeah again we got Joanna Fay on the foreground she misses the final section but we’re keeping our attention on that outside section watch this she just lip line rides a very critical section she only requires a 250 she has priority and she has an opportunity here squares off the bottom there’s that hook into the pocket and now a beautiful open face turn ahead of her this is much better as an opportunity for Carissa Moore she’s looking to stamp authority on this one and finish strong on the inside section great surfing from the Hawaiian she’s happy with that yeah well that’s going to be the best wave of the heat right there and of course she’s got a smile from ear to ear she’s having a good time when you have a wave like that it’s been tough for her to find a quality wave sage was able to get herself another mediocre number but this number here is going to uh you know lift above that the best wave of the heat so far is the 517 and this wave gave her several sections as it carries a lot of speed through these maneuvers driving through those maneuvers that’s the stuff that the judges want to see and then of course the completion on the inside will he be in position to flip and go he is toedo now a lot of open face to work with here this wave screaming down the line toed matching it speed for speed coming through this frothy midsection straight up into the lip on the attack quick grab rail get around that big section toed with room to work and a quick snap free falling crowd goes wild the exact finish that Toed had in mind on that massive set wave yeah beautiful finish there from Philippi um he went down unfortunately very close heat with Yago but that was a That’s the wave that I was talking about those bigger ones with a big wall in front of you it just give you so so much opportunity to go big like look at this turn boom yeah beautiful surfing uh so Ian Ga really making a mistake by going for that first one giving up priority little things like that can change the the rhythm of the heat right yeah i felt like Ian almost went for a little strategy moment right there to pull him back i don’t know how the wave went down the line but it probably looked pretty good and he didn’t want Filipe to get it but he ended up playing in Filipe’s favor and he got an even another wave so I like seeing Felipe go upside down twice up into the lip and they both have a front row seat the Toledo show taking the highline you see the wind up the coil as Toed punting the section finds it goes to the air a massive backside are you kidding fully rotated 540 straight to the flats nose pointing to the beach you saw that thing happening from a mile away criminal intent for the lip to Where is this going to factor in what are you seeing with the judging you’ve seen so far this year where is this going to go um it you kind of got to go an excellent range you know like he missed a lot of the wave but just that turn itself with so much backwash and bump you know like that thing’s huge look at the distance he cover is that a 10 maybe that’s got to be a 10 right i mean that that’s the the longest i mean the distance covered it’s got to be as wide as this room going 15 ft yeah and landed perfect too i mean there was no glitches there was no Look at Well it’s a 10 from Seabbass for sure 10 from Seabass and uh Well I wouldn’t be surprised if that goes up into that 10point range we’ll come back to Paige Har in a second we got live pictures out the front here this is Tatiana Weston where big opening carvings to the pocket she’s looking sure on her feet another big wrap looking for a finish to the inside section here setting up the section again third big open face from Tatiana this is going to be a solid score and nails the landing she’s just put another bag on her back hopefully she can fight through this one but if you look at what Tatiana was able to do here again taking this first wave of the set and this one just lined up that was a this is a you know solid set so there’s still plenty of surf out there again with this fuller tide these bigger sets stay open off that main peak way on the outside roll all the way through but uh yeah this is going to be probably better than her first number because uh it’s a bigger wave uh had good rhythm she knows it and then of course she has to look over her shoulder and see Sana Lima go down uh that again that pressure is no pressure she’s just literally lifting a bag off and putting it on Sylvan’s back amazing amazing surfing there from Tiana of course the crowd factor not going to go anyway in this heat there’s two Brazilians in this uh in this encounter looking to book themselves a place in that semi-final and just coming back to uh to Paige Har in the booth with us knocked out earlier by Carolan Marks conditions a bit different back then in the second round than they are today just unfortunate they’ll let him out toledo driving on the outside now just going to be tube time it’s a quick letter of shade there for Toledo and a second section on the inside now he’s going to go to the air rotates and hands out clean ladies and gentlemen Felipe Toledo is on fire in Rio that’s right look at I mean we saw this when he won in Rio at the beach of Baja Dejuka he is a showman he loves it and he’s got this crowd fired up and exactly on top of this this is where the crowd is going to play into Julian Wilson let’s have a look at here on the replay yeah and this one ran the entire bank here he had to put that pedal down the entire way here see how his board he puts it up in his feet so he’s flying through it and somehow look at he just keeps it together that’s the wind right there he knew exactly which direction the wind was going he put his board directly in it and he is one of the best at uh knowing the conditions and adjusting to be able to do those errors i mean even in offshore conditions he knows there’s the wind and that just helped him to loft him up it actually gave him the extra hang time this is going to be a number and he’s going to have a significant lead over Julian Wilson good to see the rookies mixing it up with the world’s best here in the final toledo finding a wedge on the inside this could be more like it for too fans drives off the bottom in the tube driving through and he comes out after the spit felipe Toedo gets the crowd on their feet for good reason an incredible tube ride from Toledo wow that was probably one of the best tube rides we’ve seen this entire event further down the line too you know he wasn’t all the way back up on the peak where Wade Carmichael was look at the crowd the crowd we’re with you we’re losing it right now he is potentially you know feeling frustrated from the beginning of this heat with what could be a score in that excellent if not perfect range yeah oh my goodness i mean look you could see he knew something was going to happen now he drives through the section i mean that was about as deep as you could humanly get and then sneaks out the end covered up again and comes out what a tube ride from Felipe Toledo i mean this guy’s good in the air he’s good on the face of the wave but he has proved to the world right now that he is one of the best tube riders as well there was flying out of that that was incredible here we go with live action nikki Van Djk smooth carves van Dijk working her way down the line snaps it for the finish can she ride out and the answer is yes s yes flipflop here after this exchange let’s have a look at this wave from Nikki look at the energy she puts into this first turn all the way back into the power source and again strong back foot from Nikki Van Djk and this is what I like right here races down the line watch this last maneuver total commitment bang throws the fins out thank you Carlos and your insight on being a champion and having that target on your back everyone trying to chase you down everyone’s trying to chase this lady right here up and riding Steph Gilmore because she’s at the top of the Jeep leaderboard and she’s just bringing that silky smooth technique so easy on the eye to watch times the backwash perfectly just stitched together pots a beautiful ride after that score but Steph Gilmore is going to better her situation with a 6.83 being her second highest score right here trademark stuff one of the best styles in the sport steph Gilmore takes her time as she comes off the bottom and just that swooping maneuver extends that back leg and then just gives it that extra little jam at the end of it and again another one so Steph just building points as she moves down the line and again another one this wave just went at the perfect speed for Steph and allowed her multiple opportunities and finished off lead and here’s the look at it well deciding to go left on her backand and a beautiful opening turn again just jamming it back into the pocket snapping it under the lip again throwing a lot of power into her turns and a vertical snap at the end this wave just keeps giving to Sage Ericson you know you you take a break you get away from it for a bit and you you actually go “Hang on a sec i love this one i want to be back.” Tyler arcing through that first turn and a second gouge to follow up snaps it to finish up she wants more working down the line and floats the closer gets a little bounce on the backwash unfortunate but all the damage was done with those three big turns but take another look at Tyler right yeah watch this first turn here ladies and gentlemen that is pure power pure precision right there from Tyler and again another hooking maneuver dealing with that backwash tyler snaps it through the lip so there we go that that is a 9-point ride in my eyes priority right now and she is now she’s going to have to perform to better her low we’ll see what happens on her way two big maneuvers is that better than 8.93 if Sage didn’t go was Keely going to go so there’s all that stuff that comes into play as well first turn beautiful second turn even better so two solid maneuvers and then we watch Leaky on the right and she is so strong in her maneuver she really doesn’t have to use that innovation it’s almost nice to kind of keep that in the back pocket and really only pull it out when you it’s super necessary and then we watch Leaky on the right and she is so strong in her maneuver she really doesn’t have to use that innovation it’s almost nice to kind of keep that in the back pocket and really only pull it out when you it’s super necessary surfing by both these competitors live action sally Fitzgibbons flowing this leftander keeps the rail work going succession of open face cut backs a little jam just avoids that little lip section so she hooks it in the pocket improve your situation you see again in the center of the peak first move goes straight up the wave starts to flatten out through this midsection she just weaves her way carves her way keeping the motion the flow together she carries the speed to the final section but she attacks but that’s because she’s holding a low scorer as we see here your French lady ripping through the top half of that section now loads up a second one nice and strong little right hand angle in it third one with a roof line so nice variety she goes the little subtle the very subtle subtle yeah the subtle sails pitch push into those turns look at this straight to the bottom right into the lip the snap sits off again right in that steep part and gets a third for the finish connecting with the lip so three solid turns on the outside this may be the first one for Tyler Wright and she’s going to go on the left carves off the top low bottom turn off the and just does a great job of timing that backwash right there put together some smooth surfing let’s have a look first turn nice and powerful and then this turn you can see that lump coming towards it bang just up and over wow and just did not didn’t quite connect with that last turn in 2017 let’s break down this one of Joann’s cuz this is the wave that cleaned up so this I mean it looked like a different surf spot i mean look how clean that section is wow good job she just hammered it again right in the apex of the steepest section cuz Joanne has been on a roll get to watch Joanne on the first turn and look at that she is now loosening up smaller way with a good clean wall and attacks it again you feel like that one will improve even on the 733 and this was Bianca on the first wave of the set so pulling the trigger getting herself into the lip there twice going for the spin reverse end it’s a beautiful thing about beautiful thing time ticking away just under 19 minutes remaining steph Gilmore sitting at the back with priority two ways under her belt nikki Van Djk having a look at this one can she answer back here we go van Djk on the right building up some speed down the line high line lip wide back to the lip again can she come out clean and she does well served oh wow well I tell you what Nikki Van Djk has gained some fans on the beach here today with some of the surfing that she has been doing kao that was commitment with a lot of speed and a lot of power i am actually loving watching this replay this wave standing up and Nikki Van Djk just goes for it on that little tail tap drop and then straight into that next maneuver there total commitment from Nikki Van Djk and that’s what they are doing you know I don’t know I don’t know exactly what they are doing to keep their mind on on the competition but seems like Taylor Wright is going to be the next yellow leadership jersey because she’s doing really great she’s performance very well absolutely tore to pieces and that’s that’s a a scary prospect for the rest of the field watch this first turn from Tyler just hanging into that turn and again this next maneuver jamming it in the pocket So showing some variety showing some variety of repertoire with that speed that she likes to carry through her maneuvers over Tyler Wright with just a onewave score but it’s an excellent score of a 9.4 here goes right big turn to open up look at this wave snaps it off the top just gallons it straight out the back watch this drop a late drop critical stuff watch this first turn just jamming it into the pocket and then as that wave stands up just hooking it again that’s that’s the best wave of the day well the girls are packing in the pace here as we now get more surfing for you in semi-final number two tyler right open face rip that’s a big solid one one of the best arcs we’ve seen tight jam as well and this is going to split the difference here and possibly meet the requirements remind you let’s have a re look at this as the judges work the score again that gouging turn she has that one unlocked straight to the bottom and then snap right in the pocket glides up for that final move such a mainstream sport they love their world champions here and now Tyler leading semi-final number two with two and a half on the clock will go to the backand with a good crack now leads it into the second turn rail control power and she holds it together so three great hits on the back end that was nice watching this very closely as we are beautiful hooking snap for that first maneuver and then gouges it back so two different styles and then the finish but that wave kind of ran away pretty quickly tyler going to the right again long drawn bottom turn and a beautiful arc off the top looks it again right back into the white water loads up for the finish and snaps on the oncoming in the finals with Owen on the Gold Coast watch this first turn from Tyler Wright that is what we’re talking about that board is looking good under her feet it’s holding those turns it’s allowing her just to hook into the maneuvers and she’s trusting it why that is happening is that Adriano sits in that tier A so less picks well one of two world champions at work here now the crowd responds people’s hero is the man that grew up in a FLLA here in Brazil and has become the world champion of the sport in 2015 take a look with the replay here one of the best back end so round in his bottom turn to top turn combos keeps that speed doesn’t make many errors at all so consistent getting big scores let’s have a look at Gabe here live action tight pivot now mediumsiz left-hander down the line again goes to the progression element and a much cleaner landing on this one pete just power snap quicker then Gabriel on the other side beautiful first snap oh here it comes you see him telegraphing boom with the whitewashed or sorry with the backwash well again we’ll stick with Wiggly Dantes here on the rightander another big hit for him fin release it and drifts out another big right hand jam the Brazilian crowd goes mad here nice ref reflexes tight package there from Wiggly Dante so fits in a great repertoire on the backhand run there take a look here at Wiggley he loved this wave gets the drift on that first maneuver straight to the bottom another tight arc and then hits it twice at the end four big solid turn so a bit of strategy there see what Mick has for us live action mick Fenning just a Fenning hook second one lovely puts it together wonder how many times Mick Fanning’s done that in his life he drops in does that nice round hooking snap straight out of it into the snap in the lip gets the fins up and over and then the float some whistles and now here’s the positioning in the lineup it’s going to pay out for Jagodora down the line he goes the Brazilian needs to put something together big rotation barkco scores so we’ll stay with the moment here what are you thinking Pete well you saw what he was doing his intentions were so clear full rotation flat spin landed it clean but then you see Mick Fanning paddling into that next wave but beautiful execution the one thing that’s really nice about this aerial it’s an oie and here goes Ace again vertical approach 12:00 lunchtime and another snap boom double lunch time on a little bit of a roll he’s finding the groove he’s finding the rhythm with the sets straight up and down using that backwash straight into the next turn so beautiful flow between maneuvers lightning fast snaps there from Ace Bucken rapid fire it’s an important score and Owen Rice rolls into this glassy wave face looks off the top comes off the bottom again wow pierces the lip for turn number two and stabs it 12:00 keeps going owen Wright going to town can he finish and the answer is yes the fist bow [Applause] julian needing a 7.27 still waiting for that wave from Keno Garashi owen right starts off good gets that board swinging off the top beautiful surfing there and in the tight transition owen Wright finds a couple of big turns [Music] no aarashi good looking right hander opens up drift in the tail snaps it lots of spray flying floats it and complete for Kenoa Igarashi for that big boost and he didn’t get it let’s have a look nice turn from Canoa straight into the next maneuver beautiful surfing so far and this is where I thought he might have gone up above the lip line let’s follow Julian julian looking for an 8.84 needs something special what’s he got for us nice turn there from Julian Wilson off the bottom jams it in the pocket again and another vertical snap is that the 8.84 kenova Egarashi nice opening maneuver waiting for the slave to stand up now he starts to tag it slides a tail out comes up the bottom bangs it up through the lip with a bit of backwash marco on the paddle joe’s up in the barrel can he come out and he does beautiful tube right just sniff that tube out now he’s going to continue down the line with a series of carves backhand loader goes complete finger snap and calling the ski already joe Parkinson looks excited look at that perfect positioning this man is a pipeline master he knows how to get Barrett on the back end grabs the rail gives him that extra point of contact with the board and then rattles off a couple of big turns this is going to be an interesting score it was one of those driving lofty straight air dor right behind him he’s going to need something nuts just to ensure a victory dora goes to the air full row rides out of it and then Yago Dora just up in time I think so this way will count for Yago races down the line and a big air reverse lands on the roof comes out nice and clean if you look at this replay Jord’s got the good start good size set wave here and look at the first turn just nails it they see the conditions holding we do have forecast for some onore breeze later this afternoon but right there Jordi Smith shows towards a 2-nil for Matty Wilkinson unless Canoe Garashi can find the 9.56 beautiful overview of the lineup here as Canoa up into the second turn now seen some great rail work from him through his visit here little snaps now keeps the board flowing rail to rail bumpy section holds on to it wow so he’s going to have to jump on that ski and get himself right back out there under you know just over a minute as we watch the replay here and this is going to be a good wave it’s going to match exactly where Wilco sits you know probably sits in between the 65 and the 783 maybe at least that’s my first inclination when I look at it you know sevenish zone but that’s exactly what he needed to do he’s come off an incredible heat with Wiggly Dantes there we go sosa off the bottom adriano slashes off the top good looking face overhead grabs the rail on the backside bottom turn again little bit more leverage and just works his way through the paces two big DZA watch how he fades off the bottom here snaps off the top but then watch this fade as he draws down and then hooks into that turn grabs the rail and a difficult thing to do that touch the rail with your hand and just unloads a massive turn and you know again this is just where you start looking at that title a third is is a keeper result well we never write off Adrien Ace Buck and white water foam climb for him and yep he’ll pet his way back in so he’ll want some serious rail work now that’s a beautiful hack now off the bottom again lovely this is why they nickname him the surgeon bringing a repertoire now this is going to be a very efficient wave and he’ll ramp it up nicely as well crowd will respond in appreciation in a positive manner so he stayed with it rather than have this little error here which is an error because you get up there and you kind of stall it out that affects your flow it’s basically he’s starting the way right now he’s uh re redone it and this final section is amazing two beautiful arcs then the third again connecting right in the pocket and the final move with the lip to four solid turn ton of speed and flow even with that big round cut back he carried his speed beautifully again there’s that wrap all the way back to the foam little point of difference there’s the carving they really seared into this one and then another big roundhouse where he gets loose gets that board all the way back the other direction and then shows another point of difference by getting the fins released with that snap so this is going to be his best number borrowing a drastic change in conditions we’ll have a winner here today well there you have it we’re going to have a huge rest of the day semifinals they’re going to have that pre-final show and then the finals will be on thanks so much Strider as we’re back with Matt Wilkinson here he is ripping the bag out of this one he’s waited he’s been patient and he’ll flow this one all the way through so strong rail work from Matt Wilkinson and a little chip at the end just to hold it together and he’ll be very happy with that with just a little over 10 minutes to go in this quarterfinal number four great wave choice here from Matt Wilkinson again the big round swooping carves you see him setting it up weights off the tail block and then it gets nice and steep and he attacks that section that’s that steep section that’s a critical section that’s where you need to do the maneuvers he does that again sets up the inside keeping the flow showing a little bit of pizzazz with that tail releasing and pushing on it that’s going to keep it exciting again you know those flatter sections pushing the fins and he completes the ride all the way to the inside guaranteed that for sure and I think he wants more dora off the bottom that’s better off the top showing a little bit more aggression and vertical through the lip there gets up to a more open face layback half yagodora working this wave out and wants to serve himself out of the combination snaps on the inside does he have more for us whitewater climb doza have priority let him go so not buying into it but I tell you what uh this is a good a really good bike variety with that speed i love this turn here just laying into it extending that that big frame that he’s got he’s a big solid kid and he’s surfing amazing i like the fact he just pulled back a little bit there just to make sure he finished this wave on his feet he knows he needs a big score five to get him out out of that combo situation right behind him doza what’s he got on his way vertical snap in the pocket and another beautiful maneuver just extending that body getting that board all the way back around and again and again this man just is tagging this way looking to better a 717 all on the World Surf League app on your handheld device can even watch it live as you watch now adrien Bucken he is surfing so on point at the stop and he is wrapping turns for us can he finish this one yes he does he fits it in so compact zone and Bucken fits in the combo takes off in this one not worried too much about the size of wave as he’s seeing the quality of the first section which he unloads on and there beautiful arc a lot of variety in there that squared up bottom turn going straight up now we have DZA up and running here we go adriano little rock and roll float to start hooks it off the top for turn number two smooth car off the bottom smooth carve off the top continues down the line multiple maneuvers on this inside steeper section the finish lip glide and he’s going to hang on he’s not going to give up let’s have a look caught this wave on the way back out first turn up and over watch the second turn watch the spray go into the air wa that’s how much power you can tell that the surf is putting into his moves by how much water gets displaced and he just keeps tagging it all the way through look at that one and again vertical snap just speed power flow combination of major maneuvers he may not be credited with the completed ride but the damage was done the crowd go wild adriana Dza he’s going to extend his lead look at him yelling at the crowd bringing it up pump it up ace now needs an excellent score of 8.44 here we go with Buckingham off the bottom carves off the top all the way back around another carving maneuver steepens up on the inside winds up snaps backwash timed and goes complete let’s have a look at the first turn very important to start off well first turn sort of nice jam in the pocket real quick transition comes around the section that’s a nice little speed check right there and then off the bottom and bang with that back wash little bit of drama to finish off that wave
