coaching changes on November 19th 2024 the team dismissed head coach Jim Montgomery after a disappointing start with an 89 and3 record over the first 20 games montgomery had previously led the Bruins to an historic 65 win season in 2223 earning the President’s Trophy and the Cursed Jack Adams however the team’s performance declined leading to his departure following McGomery’s dismissal associate coach Joe Sacko was appointed as interimm head coach sacko a veteran of the Boston Bruins coaching staff since 2014 had prior head coaching experience with the Colorado Avalanche from 2009 to 2013 under his interimm leadership the Bruins aimed to stabilize their performance and reestablish a cohesive team dynamic as the season progressed reports emerged suggesting that the former Bruins forward Marco Sturm was a leading candidate become the team’s next head coach sturm who had a successful playing career with the Bruins transitioned into coaching after retirement including a notable tenure as head coach of the German national team his familiarity with the organization and coaching experience made him a compelling option for the Boston Bruins future leadership the Bruins released a press release and it reads “Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced today June 5th that Marco Sturm has been named the 30th head coach of the Boston Bruins.” “We’re proud to name Marco as the 30th head coach to the Boston Bruins and welcome him Astred Mason and Katie to Boston,” said general manager Don Sweeney throughout the process our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively we were also looking for a communicator and leader someone who connects with players develops young talent and earns the respect of the room marco impressed us at every step with his preparation clarity and passion his path playing for multiple NHL teams coaching international and leading at both the NHL and AHL levels has shaped a well-rounded coach who’s earned this opportunity as a former Bruin he understands what this team means to the city and our fans we’re embracing a new direction with Marco behind the bench and I’m confident his energy standards and commitment to competitive hard-nosed brand of hockey reflects exactly what the Bruins should be “i’m incredibly honored to be named the head coach of the Boston Bruins,” said Strum “i want to thank Charlie Jacobs and the Jacobs family Cam Ney and Don Sweeney for trusting me with this opportunity boston has always held a special place in my heart and I know how much this team means to the city and our fans i felt that the passion as a player and I can’t wait to be behind the bench and feel it again i’m excited to get to work and do everything I can to help this team succeed strumm 46 served as head coach of the AHL’s Ontario reign for the past three seasons from 2022 to 25 under Sturm the team compiled an overall record of 119 80 and 11 and made three consecutive playoff appearances prior to his time in Ontario Sturm spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings from 2018 to 22 in his final year behind the bench with Los Angeles the Kings earned their first Stanley Cup playoff birth since 2018 and posted a 99 point regular season 4427 and 11 before joining the Kings organization Sturm served as a head coach and general manager for Germans men’s national team from 2015 to 2018 in 2018 Sturm led Germany to a silver medal finish in the 2018 Olympic Games becoming the first German team to ever appear in a gold medal game and the first German team to make the Olympic podium since 1976 sterm’s coaching tenure with Germany was additionally highlighted by a Doang Cup title in 2015 and back-to-back quarterfinal appearances in 2016 2017 at the IIHF Men’s World Championship the best final placement for Germany since 2011 as a player Sterm skated in 938 career NHL games with Florida Vancouver Los Angeles Boston and San Jose from 1997 to 2012 recording 242 goals and 245 assist for 487 points with a plus 59 rating he scored the game-winning overtime goal for the Bruins 2-1 win over the Flyers at the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway i was there the Germany native was originally selected by San Jose in the first round 21st overall of the 1996 NHL entry draft he leads all German players for the most NHL games played and ranked second for career goals and career points internationally he represented Germany at three Olympic games in 1998 2002 and 2010 for IIAHF men’s World Championships in 1997 2001 2004 and 2008 and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey sturm’s impact on German hockey was immediate and profound under his leadership Germany qualified for the 2016 IAHF World Championship quarterfinals a major achievement given their struggles in previous tournaments however his most notable accomplishments came during the 2018 Winter Olympics where he coached Germany to a historical silver medal as I mentioned before Sturm doesn’t exactly bring NHL head coaching experience because he was only an assistant to Boston but I don’t see that as a bad thing he has coached at almost every level and had great success he’s been around the game his whole life knows the organization and I think he’s been away long enough to bring a new perspective it’s not exactly like he’s been in the Bruins organization for years like many of the head coaches in the previously besides Jim Montgomery i can see that as an asset the LA Kings have done a fantastic job developing young talent and he’s a big part of that and the Bruins are going to be a young team now sturm isn’t known as a pushover either and known as being a fair coach and sort of a player’s coach cuz he’s been around the game so I’m hoping with this new leadership corps he can bring a fresh perspective and help that new leadership core grow i want to hear from you what are your thoughts on the Bruins hiring Marco Sturm as their What are your thoughts on the hire?
Seems like a great choice all things considered. This season will be a challenge and hopefully have some growth with buy in with patience needed. Much better than a Tortorella type retread. Cam and Sweeney need to stay in their lane and stay upstairs. Let Marco actually be in charge and stay quiet.
..now just get rid of GM and management..!!!
I'm not impressed, just another ex-Bruin to join Neeley and Sweeney. I guess we'll see how this works out
love it. always a fan.
I hope it works out. My pessimistic side feels this is setting up for a good excuse if things continue to crater. Enough accolades to be legit and yet ready made to be chucked under the bus.
Nothing against Sturm but I am not sure about the hire. He does not have a ton of NHL coaching experience and he did not light it up as an AHL bench boss. I am rooting for the guy but I feel like this is a stretch.
I've seen alot of people saying this is a "boys club" hire but i think people are overlooking his experience, yes he hasnt been an NHL head coach before but he has been a good coach in the AHL and overseas as well, the same people who dont like the hire because hes played for the bruins would be jumping for joy if big Z was hired as the coach even tho he has never done it at any level, not saying he wouldnt be good at it by any means but i find people are contradicting themselves. Its not the most flashy hire ever and wont turn this team around overnight but i dont think there is any coach that couldve done that. I just hope he can help this team form an identity like he did when he was here as a player and help grow the young guys so they can be back in the mix in a year or 2
100% hire for me
Ok, screw the Winter Classic goal lol. The first game I finally decided to drive back up to Boston for since the Neely retirement night was 2008, game 6. THAT is the Sturm goal as a Bruin, and was the beginning of being respectable again. That was a great night. 🙂
And I am 100% fine with the choice of him as the next coach.
Nobody on the planet was ever happier to score a goal then Marco was.

Sweeney has been successful identifying head coaches. No knock on Sturm but I just keep thinking Butch should have been here all these years.
Without top talent in lines 1-3 we are doomed for mediocre seasons and getting bounced out of the playoffs in the first round.
I don’t hate the hire.
Excellent choice! With Chara as an assistant, that would be good too.

He may look like a young Jerry Seinfeld but If he can turn around our power play I won't be laughing. I like him and hope he can be the spark we need.
I see Sacco is an assistant on Rangers. Good for him!
With the state the Bruins are in right now, what the heck? It's kind of hard to say this is a mistake, whereas hiring Tortorella or Laviolette would be a definitive mistake. I actually prefer this than just hiring someone from the endless coach carousel…Tortorella, Tocchet, Laviolette, Sullivan, DeBoer…heck maybe they could have enticed coach Budreau to come back and yell at the players. At least Marco has something to prove as an aspiring coach, plus has some competitive roots in Boston where he played his best years.
I am thinking he is a pretty good fit. I hope he can turn it around – he definitely knew how to bring out the best in himself as a player.
Thanks for all your updates and videos on the Bruins. I live in Australia so hockey news is extremely hard to come by here. Appreciate your time and effort mate😊
Looking forward to seeing your next video and insight.
Sturm has earned this job. I think he will b a good coach. The only thing i fear is management interfering with what sturm wants to do with implementing HIS own offence and defensive systems. Our "alleged" zone defensive system sucks and needs to be changed. Kelly and Leach need to go bye bye too. Let Marco pick his assistants like they let Foote do in Vancouver. And Tocchet got his assistant from Vancouver.
20 years later, the JoTho trade comes full circle!
bruins will miss the playoffs again!!
I'm optimistic,give the guy a chance.
Love Marco
Personally I believe that they may have tried speaking to some top NHL coaches that were shall we say in need of a team to coach and that they may have declined the idea of coaching in Boston given the high turn over rate. The Strum pick screams to me that this is the guy we can scapegoat from Neely and Sweeney should they have a repeat of last year. Just an opinion.
Yeah I think that he’s gonna bring great things!
