A Look at the How the Panthers Roster Was Built

It seems to be a point of discussion that Florida has an unfair advantage, but they’ve been really smart about which players to pick up and when.

  1. They had their best regular season in franchise history, a 58 win team in 2022. It takes guts to trade a 115pt player from that team in Huberdeau. Zito knew his team wasn’t good enough after they got swept in the 2nd rd by Tampa.

Ironically the Leafs also had their best regular season that year – 54 wins. The similarities end there with their refusal to take any risk and move one of the core 4.

  2. Only addition: Kulikov was drafted by Florida and said in interviews he wanted to come back in the worst way, he never wanted to leave. That plays into that contract for sure.

  3. So I can't believe this kind of got glossed over–Florida wins the President's Cup in '22 and loses in the 2nd round. They fire the coach, trade the star player, and then make a their first of 3 Stanley Cup runs…

  4. To quote the poorly timed Tiger Woods advertisement after one of his scandals, "Winning takes care of everything"

  5. Barkov is still underrated. He should be getting Hart consideration because he's that good. He's the centerpiece of the strongest team of the last decade. The only player that's maybe better is McDavid, except having Barkov on your team directly counters the opponent having McDavid.

  6. I definitely said Reinhart to florida was gonna bring them a cup. Being a sabres fan i was disgusted how the organization treated their star players at that time. Reinhart wanted term and the team rerused to offer him anything but another bridge deal. He wanted to stay here so bad and the organization basically told him they didnt think he was good enough to commit to him.

  7. Yes i was happy we got levi at the time but it wasnt because he was proven. It was because we actually got similar value back for once. I work for the amerks ice crew and Levi is absolutely incredible in the AHL. We will see if he can transition to the NHL begause the sabres have already tried to force him before he was ready twice.

  8. UPL has a new goalie coach this offseason he is training with so if he can fix whatever his issue is and levi can get eased in as the #2 then the sabres could have a killer duo for years to come.

  9. I remember years ago on the Overdrive podcast noodles saying "if bob can win florida 1 cup no one will talk about it being a bad deal" and look what happened 3 straight finals 1 win and its looking like they'll probably win again this year

  10. When Montreal was winning cups in the 70's, Sam Pollack was the GM and like Zito, he knew how to build a team, and got the right coach in Scotty Bowman as has Zito with Paul Maurice. It's the brains behind that build the team, not the money. The only difference is the Habs drafted 14 players and added others, with Florida it's the other way around, but they won one and are going for their 2nd. I still get the feeling from time to time, that there's a certain "magic" that comes along when a team is ready or poised to do it, maybe it's momentum, but it's in the room.

  11. I’ll be honest, I’m an oilers fan. I don’t think it’s a big deal with the cap here. People lump in Florida and Tampa in one for their argument. Nashville and Seattle aren’t competing for cups. Dallas is competitive but get dismantled by the oilers, Colorado, Vegas, etc. Vegas won one, but most of what they do is trades, not showing an advantage. Seems like a coping mechanism. Adjusting for a “tax advantage” hurts players if they are ever traded. Again, as a fan of a Canadian market I should be screaming it’s unfair. But I don’t think it is. Players take discounts to win, you can find players on value contracts with a good gm & staff. I don’t get the arguments against here

  13. There’s no shot you just contrasted cost of living with tax… tax can be millions for these players… I don’t think Tkachuks wallet cares much that dinner is 6$ more a meal looooool

  14. Hey big dog, remember me? I called your playoff predictions wrong when you took Tampa…

Thanks for the deep review of the roster.

  15. Bud you’re interpreting the information backwards , Florida is the 40th most expensive state cost of living wise . Massachusetts is the 8th most expensive (don’t think that stat is accurate either it’s universally known that after Connecticut , Massachusetts has the highest cost of living in the country ) meaning it’s extremely cheap to live in Florida and it’s very expensive to live in Massachusetts, the tax break athletes get in Florida is a cheat code , 3 of the last 5 cups have been from Florida lol

  16. You mention Nashville as a no-state-tax team that is struggling to ice a championship team, but to be fair, they were signing free agents in a similar manner to Florida just a few years ago. It’s just that the team’s players didn’t mesh.

  17. Also in regards to the tax benefit in Florida….when was the last time the Dolphins won a playoff game? Tennessee has no income tax either, how often have the Preds been good? The Titans?
