Boston Bruins Sign Soderstrom | NHL Trade Rumours
the Boston Bruins signed newly acquired defenseman Victor Solderstrom and from the looks of his new contract they will give him every opportunity to make the Bruins out of camp the real question is what kind of a player is he i’m going to cover this and some players I hope the Bruins should look at via trade in my latest video so buckle up Bruins fans i’m here to give you the latest info on your beloved Boston Bruins if you’ve been liking my Bruins content please leave me a like and subscribe if you’ve already done so thank you and let’s get into it he scores when the Boston Bruins announced last week that they had acquired Victor Sodestrom for Ryan Mass and a 2025 7th round draft pick my immediate reaction was “Who is Victor Sodestrom and why does his name sound familiar?” Sodestrom was originally drafted by the now defunct Arizona Coyotes in the first round 11th overall in the 2019 NHL entry draft in 53 career NHL games all with Arizona he tallied one goal and 10 assists for 11 points he accumulated these points over a span of four seasons though in the NHL from 2020 to 2024 i will say that during that time the Coyotes were a brutal hockey team and from what I can see he never played over 30 games in one season and he averaged around 16 minutes a night i can’t tell if they gave him a chance or that he was an issue with his compete or skill level transferring to the NHL he was touted as a good skating two-way defender who had a potential to be a top pairing defenseman in the NHL i think this is why the Bruins took a flyer on him the Bruins signed the 24-year-old Soderstrom to a one-year two-way contract through 2025-26 season with an NHL cap hit of 775,000 that cap head isn’t something to shake a stick at and it tells me the Bruins hope he can play in the NHL this year considering he’s a right shot guy it also tells me the Bruins are not looking to bring back Henry Yuki Hairo who played on the bottom pair right side last season and as a UFA it doesn’t mean the Bruins won’t sign any other free agents but we’ll be giving Sodestrom a chance on that right side maybe they bring guys on PTO but I kind of think they think this is the solve on the bottom pair because of his two-way deal they can start him in Providence no problem chicago acquired him from Arizona but he wouldn’t sign there but he did choose to sign with the Bruins i’m sure fellow sweet Elias Lynholm and Hampus Lynholm had something to do with it last season Sodestrom appeared in 49 games with Bionis if of the Swedish Hockey League recording nine goals and 28 assists for 37 points he won the Boreal Smalling Trophy as the league’s best defenseman and led all SHL skaters in plus minus at 28 can’t be disappointed in any of those stats his stats in the SHL last season I’m sure made it so the Bruins weren’t his only suitors this offseason but the risk of him not signing I’m sure was an issue with a lot of teams my guess the Bruins got permission to speak with him before making the deal and is the reason why they could get the deal quickly done and they signed him after the trade if he didn’t sign by Sunday he would not have been able to play in the NHL or the AHL this season ryan Mast wasn’t even a top 10 prospect in the Bruins system so it’s not like the Bruins gave away a lot with the hopes of striking lightning in a bottle with Sodestrom we have seen the Bruins take flyers on former first round picks that didn’t work out in their former club and they’ve had some success but a heck of a lot of failures the most recent one was Oliver Walstrom who was selected 11th overall but was in the 2018 NHL entry draft by the Islanders in 43 games last season in Boston Walstrom scored three goals and three assists for six points he really didn’t look good and we were all excited when he was going into the lineup but then he just he didn’t seem to click they throw him in the top six he didn’t work there they throw him in the bottom six he didn’t work there maybe the AHL is the career for him pavlzaka though is the prime example of when it’s worked so you never know with Sodtorm being a two-way defender with strong skating and can move the puck can’t hurt and if he can climatize himself to the North American game and excel with the Bruins it’s we’re all going to be laughing about this one i have seen some tweets saying maybe he can be the next Forsling that you know Florida just had but let’s let’s stop comparing to other things let’s compare to something that’s happened in the Bruins organization he might not make the team out of camp but if he does I will be paying close attention it’s hard to say if this is a win trade or not until he plays but considering Mass wasn’t going to play in Boston this season it doesn’t hurt the Bruins if you know more about Sodesttorm drop your comments down below as I haven’t seen him take one shift so I can only go off what I’ve read about the guy the next thing I want to talk about is what I think the Bruins should do this off season instead of poking around the free agent market my hope this summer is the Bruins look more into the trade market because there seems to be some pretty big names available according to insiders and some I think would fit in very well in Boston i want to start off by saying I’m not saying someone has linked these players to Boston but I’m just spitballing here and having some fun because these guys names have been thrown out as potential trades from their team and I look at them and say I would like them in the Boston Bruins uniform the first player I want to talk about is Jason Robinson and the reason being is I want to say I seriously doubt the Bruins have any assets to acquire him and it sounds like Dallas would only trade him if they have no choice it’s just everybody’s talking about him right now so I figured just get it off my chest if you look at the Dallas Cap situation it’s very easy to understand why they need to make some trades almost half the Stars roster is UFA this offseason and some big names on that list starting with Mikuel Granlin and Jamie Ben also don’t forget Matt Duchain ben being 35 they can give him an incentive/bonus type contract but he isn’t going to be going for peanuts granland supposedly is the guy they would like to sign and is the reason all this trade chatter is happening robertson is an RFA next season and is going to command a hefty raise and is the reason for all the chatter because they just extended Miko Rantin dallas also has Maverick Bourke coming off his entry-le deal who is also looking for a raise and Mason Marchman who will need a new deal at the end of next season dallas has 35 million in cap space but with the laundry list of guys they want to resign that 35 million will disappear real fast that brings me to the player I hope the Bruins at least call about from the Dallas Stars and that’s Mason Marshman mason Marshman was undrafted and began his NHL journey by signing an AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies in 2016 he earned an entry-level contract with Toronto in March 2018 despite only debuting in the NHL in January 2020 he made his NHL debut on January 2nd 2020 with the Maple Leafs logging four games and one assist he in 202021 season marked his breakthrough 33 games with the Florida yielded him two goals eight assists and 10 points i really think they regret letting that guy go but in 2021-22 he exploded with 54 games 18 goals 29 assists for 47 points and a plus 29 rating he’d logged 121 shots and averaged 14 minutes on ice per game revealing his offensive side in 2022 23 Marchman joined Dallas Stars on a 4-year 4.5 million AAV contract he posted 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points in 68 games with a plus six he averaged around 15 minutes per game took 148 shots and had an 80 penalty minutes playing gritty big body winger role you know that type of player that Bruin fans have said they’ve always wanted well this is that guy and he’s actually good he stepped up in 23-24 delivering 22 goals and 31 assists for 53 points in 81 games and a plus 22 rating and a strong power play production with five power play goals his five on five advanced stats show he improved shot quality shot 11.8% at five on five up from 6.9% more high danger chances close shot distance 23.3 ft versus 26.8 ft and 40% rise in expected goal value per goal reflecting smarter zone play the kid is awesome followed up that season with 22 goals in 24-25 but he was sidelined with injuries and was only able to play in 62 games but he registered 47 points standing at 6’4 and 210 Marshman is known as a power winger who uses his size to dig in front of the net and harass defenders nhl scouts call him an aggressive forward strong enough to make life miserable for opponents who pairs rugged physical play with scoring ability he is increasingly selective using chemistry with linemates like Sean and Duchain to create high danger opportunities rather than low percentage shots he sounds like a guy we would all love in the Boston Bruins while not fast he carves out space with his size showing improved passing under pressure and reliable secondary scoring in a middle to top six role in Boston he would instantly be an upgrade to the middle six and could easily be the second line winger on the Bruins mason Marshman’s trajectory has evolved from undrafted late blooming NHL player into valuable NHL winger starting with a modest production in Florida and Toronto he ascended to a reliable 20 plus goal scorer in Dallas underpinned by improved shot quality netfront presence and physicality his scouting profile highlights a physical intelligent forward whose capitalizes on size and shot selectivity a versatile middle six winner capable of both scoring and annoying opponents he would be a no-brainer if the Bruins could get him in and considering the Stars are not even looking to add salary he could be acquired for picks and prospects maybe they could package Mercul or Trevor Couton plus a first they acquired in the Marshan trade to get a deal done or even a second round pick to get the deal done i’m spitballing here but I doubt Dallas is going to let a 20 plus goal scorer go for nothing herculof as much as I like him has struggled to stay in the lineup in Boston even though he’s had a ton of success in Providence it might be time to package him to upgrade that top six the last guy I want to talk about is someone who I talked about a ton last off season and the rumor has it he’s still not happy on his new team that player is Martin Nes who has one year left at $6.5 million and will be an RFA next season now Colorado gave up a ton to get him and I’m sure they would like to recoup those assets colorado is still in their cup window which makes me think for the Bruins to pull this off they’re going to need a third team they’re going to need to be able to package their picks and prospects to another team who’s looking for that for a player that Colorado’s looking for ness is a fellow countryman and friend to David Pastnac which makes me think it would be an easy transition for him like his other fellow countrymen in Pavazaka he can play wing or center the skating report on nature has him as an elite skater explosive acceleration top tier edge control and dynamic puck handling he’s only 26 which means he isn’t even in his prime and he’s got many years ahead of him last season Nas 16 goals and 39 assists and 55 points in 49 games with Carolina then gets traded in January debuts with Colorado scores another 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points in 30 games all this guy does is get points ns would be a huge upgrade to the top six in Boston and I think instantly put them back in the conversation of making the playoffs as I mentioned before though even though there are rumors out there he is unhappy i’m not I’m just saying what if no rumor out there is saying Nature’s is coming to Boston but him and Marchman would be prime examples of players I think the Bruins should pursue this offseason i want to hear from you though what do you think of the two players I hope the Bruins try and trade for and who do you think if not these guys they should look at let me know in the comments below that’s a wrap on today’s video to stay up to date on all the news surrounding the Boston Bruins please subscribe and drop me a What do you think of Soderstrom?
I think players need to get a trial run these days. I thought all the signings last year were awesome until they hit the ice then nothing fantastic or mind blowing
After watching several videos, he has the kind of skill set the D Corp needs .. don't know about his competitive aptitude.
Seems like a decent shot at developing this late prospect. Must have heard from PJ Axelsson…
Love the two players that you want the Bruins to chase…strong talent.
I think the Bruins need more 3rd line centers and 4th line dead weight. Oh wait that's not what we need but its all Sweeny can seem to aquire
Sign Sam Bennett as a UFA if you want to get better quickly. Soderstrom who knows hope he is good.
Great content – so glad to have discovered this channel through your appearance on Evan's! I really appreciate getting Bruins updates and info with terrific analysis and good research to back up the discussion, thank you! I'm excited about the Soderstrom signing, and totally convinced it would be awesome to acquire someone like Marchment for the B's. I wish Necas had shown more production in the playoffs for the Avs, but I guess not everyone can be Mikko Rantanen, lol.
like you say its a mystery and ill be watching
Bruins need to look at all the above…
Btw, I haven't had a chance to binge watch your prior content, but what are your thoughts on the possibility of the Bruins trading Swayman in a specific/special situation? (I've been extremely "disenchanted" with Swayman after his obnoxious public comments during the negotiations, and his poor play this past season didn't help. Even though I root for underdogs, and Calvin Pickard certainly was one in game 5, I was hoping for a poor showing so I could fantasize about EDM losing the series due to goaltending, which would force them to a crazy trade for a goaltender, like: Swayman and whatever else — except Pastrnak — for Draisaitl, LOL.) It seems Sweeney has been pretty good at finding undervalued goaltenders who succeed with the Bruins' structure (which we all hope Sturm will re-implement).
What can we say about defenseman Soderstrom? He's young, a good skater, a good passer, has good vision, and (due to his weight) isn't afraid of physical play. However, there are two drawbacks. The first: He's not very tall, and this shortcoming sometimes negatively affects his range in zone coverage situations. Second: His slap shot needs improvement, both in accuracy and speed (with better weight transfer, his shot speed could greatly improve). He'll need plenty of playing time to adjust.
But, all things considered, this isn't exactly the kind of signing we're looking for!
I would love Necas, joining pasta, and zacha. I think they are the top line for team Czechia. It would be great.
Hard to see a negative with this Soderstrom signing honestly. He could very well work out fine and turn into a Carlo type by the look of his skill set. Regardless it never hurts to have some depth at defense and we may need him and more if they choose not to resign a few guys from last year. Wotherspoon took a step back last year IMO and I am not a fan of jokiharju.
Marchment or Necas would be an improvement for sure.
Would love to have both but I worry the Bruins have nothing they would take in return
There has been talk of giving up the 7th pick for Robertson.
Had the chance to see Necas playing in Raleigh the last few seasons, would love to see him on a pure Czech line in Boston with Pasta and Zacha..
Im all in for trading a 2nd and merkulov for Marchment, throw him or Zacha on the 1st line with Pasta/Lindholm and the other on LW for the 3rd line. B’s need a shot first scoring LW for the 2nd line tho imo and to help out on the 1st line PP unit to add another scoring threat and help open up more room for pasta on the PP too. Also really need to upgrade Peeke to a higher end DFD to for the 2nd pairing and 2nd PK unit.
👍 Great content.
That's all I could get on Viktor too.
I'll keep trying to find some brynna League highlights..
It's promising, doesn't cost a lot, and he's got the two lindholmes so there's a good chance he'll be happier & invested in the franchise.
R defenseman are in demand whether we keep him or not.
He's another one of those players that came up during the panicdemic
I still wonder whether the covid caused a backup in the nhl pipeline
I thought Bruins wouldn't be interested in Mason marchment?
That would be good
I'm still on board with Granlund if the money is okay, was hoping to get him before Dallas picked him up.
This summer is going to be more exciting than this past season.
