Worst Trades in the NHL

the NHL’s biggest fails starting off with the Pittsburgh Penguins trading for Eric Carlson the Penguins gave up quite a bit to go allin on an aging star only to miss the playoffs it cost them cap flexibility and didn’t even solve their biggest issues they tried to do a quick rebuild and then they had to go into a full one this trade just made no sense the Buffalo Sabres trading Jack Eel they had a franchise centerpiece who just wanted to get a specific type of surgery but the team doctors in the team didn’t agree and Eichel stood his ground and they were forced to trade probably the best player they were going to have for years they got a decent return but Eichel went on to have a massive amount of success and Vegas won the cup buffalo’s stolen a rebuild and all of this could have been avoided

Pittsburgh Trading for Erik Karlsson (2023)
The Penguins gave up futures and depth to go all-in on an aging star… only to miss the playoffs. It cost them cap flexibility and didn’t fix their biggest issues. They tried to quick rebuild then months later had to bail on that plan.

Buffalo Sabres Trade Jack Eichel (2021)
A franchise centerpiece forced out after a brutal public battle over medical treatment. The return? Decent. But Vegas got their Cup… and Buffalo’s still rebuilding and it all could have been avoided with common sense.
