  1. I know a lot of people thought hed be signing fairly cheap. I think that was before he dominated the Calder voting. For myself at least I always expected he'd be demanding 10mil +. But this news definitely has me a bit nervous that he doesn't plan on making this negotiation easy on the habs.

  2. Calm down people, Hutson only has one complete season in the league… 12.5$ is really exagerated… let's slow down a bit here… not worth more than 7.5 m… you guys are throwing money left and right here, let him prove that he can backup is rookie season, then we will know for sure…

  3. Comparable Contracts:

Jake Sanderson (top pairing defensemen RFA years): 8.05m x 8y (9.15% of cap)
    Jacob Chycrun (Top-pairing defenseman, UFA years) 9m x 8y (9.42% of cap)
Quinn Hughes (Franchise Defensemen, RFA Years) 7.85m x 6y (9.63% of cap)
Roman Josi (Franchise Defensemen, UFA years) 9.06m x 8y (11.12% of the cap)
Carey Price (Franchise Habs player, UFA years) 10.5m x 8y (13.21% of the cap)

    Lane Hutson contract possibilities:
The cap in 2026/2027 will likely be 104,000,000$

Minimum to sign in my opinion is 9.16% of the cap = 9,525,000

If Kent Hughes can sign Lane Hutson between 6 to 8 years at the above AAV, that is a nifty piece of business by Went Wughes.

The highest Kent Hughes should pay for Lane Hutson in my opinion is 11.44% and only if it is at 8 years.
I got that number by dividing 9.63/11.12 multiplying the result by 13.21.

If Lane Hutson were to get 11.44%, his cap hit would be 11,895,000$ for 8 years. In my opinion Lane Hutson should only get that offer if he scores 15+ goals and 80+ points in the 25/26 season.

Lane Hutson will not break 100,000,000 total for his next contract. He might get close, if he increases his output by 25% from his rookie season. Maximum 12m x 8 at 96m total value.

To summarize, if Lane Hutson’s low-end AAV would be 9,525,000 and his high-end AAV would be 11,895,000. We can assume his middle-ground AAV would be around 10,750,000. That would be around 10.34% of the cap. For each year Lane Hutson wants to knock of his contract, I would remove around 0.35% of the cap.

Fair offers would be as follows:
    8y x 10,750,000 (10.34%)
    7y x 10,385,000 (9.99%)
    6y x 10,025,000 (9.64%)

The 6 year offer is almost identical to what Quinn Hughes got in his extension. Lane Hutson would get 9.64%, instead of Quinn Hughes who got 9.63%.

10m – 10.8m is the sweet spot for a Lane Hutson extension. Anything below or at a 10m AAV with at least 7 years is a Went Wughes negotiation. Anything between 10m – 10.99m is a fair deal. 11.5m+ AAV is Lent Lughes unless Lane Hutson becomes a point per game player next season.
