  1. I hope that this is a great signing with eyes laid to the future and all that jazz…yada yadda….But I would love to see the "core" return to the playoffs one more time as well.

  2. My favorite hockey quote of all time is from Sullivan actually, "Complacency is the enemy of progress." (irony aside not considering the last 3 years).

But if the Penguins are wide open to new ideas and chances with young guys who know the game, I'm all for it. A new brand of Pittsburgh Penguins hockey is coming soon after 87, 71, & 58 go, I just want to see it be successful.

  3. So we’re near the top of the list for oldest rosters in the league, so we hire a guy who has a lot of experience with development, and helping players grow?
    That’s makes sense

  4. I had heard of the name, but didn't know too much about him. When I read up on him after the Penguins announced the hire, I really am optimistic.

What impresses me the most, is the time he spent with USA Hockey in the USA Developmental Program. He's overseen the development of a lot of good young players that have made it ot the NHL. Some of the players he coached, during his time with USA Hockey Developmental Program were: Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, Luke Hughes, Isaac Howard, Rutger McGroarty, Zeev Buium, and others.

There was an article from the atheltic by Arthur Staple from 2023 where Will Smith and Ryan Leonard had nothing but glowing things to say about Dan Muse and the time they spent with him as their head coach. Given where this team is headed over the next few years, he fits the strength of what they were looking for the most, player development. Plus, he's big into analytics, but also has an old school coaching style as well. So it's a combo of new style and old style. Im very optimistic.

  5. When Mike Johnston was hired he was said to be able to bring a fast transition game; had success at various levels, WHL, as an NHL assistant. And it was to take the Penguins to the point where they can translate their regular season success to playoff success……what transpired we all know. I'm not going to put Dan Muse down before he has a chance to succeed…..but as someone who is critical of Dubas as a GM…his desire to be 'off the radar' with his moves….his analytic approach to the game sometimes ignores the intangibles of the game….many would argue it was his downfall in constructing that Toronto team he did….and I would say it was what had him miss the boat in getting Karlsson when it was clear the team didn't need that type of player. Just like Tavares was not the type of player Toronto needed when he forked over 11 mil a year to him.
I think this hire misses the intangibles….unless it is full rebuild he is going for, which I think he has been but saying otherwise. I think this team is a draft lottery team last year and not winning with Crosby around, I would love to be wrong but I haven't since Dubas has been hired.

  6. This is also a subtle way to get rid of the aging stars without having to be the one to do it….if these players are going down with this ship they will just go with it…if they don't they'll ask for a trade…and Dubas doesn't have to be the one who trades them, 'they' wanted the trade. I work with many hockey players, and the veteran ones I messaged and they were all like "man if I was there I would want out".

  7. I've tried looking for reasons to not like the hire, but I really can't find any. I'm curious to see what comes of it. Also curious how long the leash is? ❤️🔥🍻

  8. Good morning DK, Victor from Canada 🇨🇦 here. Dubas is different my friend…..BUUUUUT, I must admit I've grown to really like him. By that, anyone who methodically thinks, has immense passion for, and is like-open-mindedness to the point he is about how he goes his business waaanting to win, but win the right way, for the organization, players, city, etc is impressive! His year end press conference and how, like you said, he didn't just answer questions with the same old "ya, gotta be here….here's my answer, write it, bye guys" way I really appreciated too like you did! He has this "Iwant you to understand what I'm thinking to help you understand what I'm doing" type answers are so refreshing. Have a great day

  9. KYLE DUBAS IS A JOKE! Puts together the core 4 and gets fired in Toronto. Assembles the core 4 and has a loser team in Pittsburgh. Now he hires a coach with a blah! resume to transform a team with a core 4, that Dubas couldn't do in Toronto or Pittsburgh. You know what they say about a man keeps doing the same thing over and over expecting different results?

  10. DK – Not to take away from any hope and positivity with this hire, but I am very curious to know how much slack you think Muse will get? Clearly Dubas is not expecting this team to be a serious contender or even a playoff team, but do you think he'll be quick to pull the trigger if this team is a complete disaster in the first two or so months of the season?

  11. I think this is a short term hire. But then again, evaluating coaches is neither in my job description nor in my skill set.

  12. Seems as though we are getting what we wanted, at least I hope so. More importantly developing players. Time will tell. Thank you DK, Well now we know who's coach.

  13. I would like to know if Dubus is a Micro-Manager?. What kind of input the head coach of the Pens has in roster choices and such?. Seems to me that Sullivan was one of those guys who just went with the roster he was presented with and tried to make the most of it. I just dont know how much of a difference a head coach can make on a team like the Penguins..Dubus wears many hats in the organization and really hasnt accomplished much in his career to date resultswise.

  14. DK – What does a new coach potentially mean for guys like Graves and Karlsson? New coach, new system, etc… Both players just didn't seem to fit with Sullivan's system, so could a new coach mean rebounds for them? Not that Karlsson was bad, but obviously he hasn't really fit since coming here.
