So Tony doesn't know where the Wings are picking this year. That's when I shut the podcast off.
The biggest 40:48 knock in Lakovic is his compete level. SY doesn't draft low compete players. And I think Carter Bear could be around at 13. He's a winger with a significant injury in his draft year. I think O'Brien and Mrtka have a good chance to go higher.
Not to say it's the same situation… But I had a fractured pars (L5) due to a defect in my pars. I have instrumentation in my back, had a fusion between my L5-S1. And honestly, I'm fine. Again, the situation can be different for each person. But once that fusion "takes", it's solid. So yes, definitely need to know what the medical professionals say about his back injury and surgery. But it can absolutely be solidly not an issue.
If they cannot get a top forward who will join soon. Go LHD for that top pairing with Seider who could be ready in less time.

Trade the pick for someone who can help the roster now. Whoever the Wings would pick wouldn’t play on the team for at least a good 2-3 years.
Assuming the pick isn’t traded, which they’re trying to do. You take the most skilled forward you can unless Smith falls.
Be careful not to forget about risers like Boumedienne and Cam Reid, who could be a surprise at 13, but both are very skilled dmen.
The target should be Cullen Potter 100%, hands down.
I think he’ll already be gone because he’s higher on team’s draft boards than he is Central Scouting, that most mocks are based off of. If he’s gone, the next target should be Justin Carbonneau. He has NHL goal scorer written all over him. That’s assuming Martin, O’Brien, Smith and Potter are off the board. He’s a kid who could make the jump after next season as well.
Back to Cullen Potter…
If he had played at the Development program this past year or in the CHL, he would’ve dominated with massive numbers. He played college hockey and dominated at times, at only 17.
He should be the target. He’s small, but he’s going to put up points in the NHL. He’s Stankoven who processes the game faster. He too, will be playing in the NHL in the 2026-2027 season.
He’s as dynamic as it gets after the top 3 in this draft. He’ll be a better pro than Hagens. It’s ridiculous he’s being mocked to go around 15-20. That’s all about his size but haven’t we learned that small is ok these days?? As long as they can build core strength, which he already has for his age, and that they can process the game at an NHL level.
He’s the best chance they have at landing a dynamic player at 13.
Lakovic and McQueen are both highlight players. Watch them play entire games and you lose lots of respect for their game. They’re both players certain scouts are trying to turn into something they haven’t yet proven against 16-17 year olds. If people hate Rasmussen, you’ll hate McQueen twice as much. The back makes picking him even scarier. Spence is similar in many ways. Because they have the perfect physical makings, draft gurus shoot them up draft boards. Hopefully teams have learned their lesson and don’t pass on actual producers like Potter and Carbonneau.
I’m not sure where you’re coming from saying Lakovic is an Yzerman type pick. He lacks the #1 trait Yzerman picks forwards for. Creating space in traffic. He just doesn’t. That’s a prime reason of concern when they haven’t shown it against 16-17 year olds.
We’ll see though. Can he develop? Sure but he should be dominating those same 16-17 year olds with his physical gifts.
