Should DeBoer have been fired by Stars? | OverDrive

Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan live from the RBC Canadian Open discuss the Dallas Stars firing head coach Pete DeBoer and did he deserve it.

  1. Jake had a terrible series. Only one game over .900. If he made 1 save out of the 2 in an elimination game, their would be no controversey. Call a spade a spade.

It's funny how toronto Can keep the core 4 for 9 years, but Peter debor can't call out his goalie for not stopping the puck…

It would of be just as extreme to trade Jake here.

This is a huge red flag for me because it's creating a soft environment.

Skinner got yanked out of games and didn't even start.

Soft players. Their gunna need to retool. Really surprised when miro and benn are captians.

But we can also say Ilya and Dumba didn't even play the playoffs or just a game or 2. That's 7mil down the drain.

This is gunna be a rough offseason for them.

  2. DeBoer is a jerk. Not impressed with him at all from some of the comments that have come out of his mouth

  3. I'm not a DeBoer fan, but he made the correct decision and got fired for it. Oettinger is a goalie diva. Just like Bennington and Hellebuyck.

  4. Replace players or replace the coach???
Put the same Stars roster in the conference finals next year against the same Oiler team and the result doesn’t change… keep the coach while tweaking the roster and maybe it does.
His post game comments were beyond inappropriate, but Otter wasn’t the problem… the level of play in front of him was and firing DeBoer doesn’t solve that!
Wouldn’t be surprised if Dallas doesn’t even make the playoffs next year.

  5. The pulling Ottenger + wasting a timeout at the same time was basically a resignation call from coaching as a whole. Whether he did that intentionally (like a kid throwing the board game after losing), whether it was a lapse of judgement in the heat of a moment, or he truly didn't realize that he didn't need to waste a timeout if he planned on pulling a goalie.. That move alone screams "Hey everyone, I am not NHL head coach caliber", hope he isn't expecting to be hired anywhere else either. Maybe better suited to the minors

  6. How is it that nobody has brought up DeBoer’s failure to make any changes from a strategy standpoint against Edmonton for two straight WCF? He stuck with the same strategy that didn’t work last year and got the same result. At the end of the day they needed much more than lineup changes. With that said, I am still extremely surprised Dallas pulled the trigger on this firing. Overall, Pete has done a fantastic job with this team and he will certainly find another job going forward. The real struggle now is who are they going to get to actually help get them over that hump? I was hoping they would get David Carle but he already signed a long extension with University of Denver. Laviolette I think could do a great job but I am not sure if that he has the style they are wanting. He is very similar to DeBoer in my opinion so I doubt that is where they go. There has been a lot of talk that they could go after Jukka Jalonen from the Finish team. He definitely has a good resume and I am sure he would fit in well in Dallas with all the Finnish talent we have around here. Ultimately, based on Nill’s comments I think there is a likely chance they just promote Neil Graham from the Texas Stars. He is a good coach but that is a big ask for someone to make the jump when clearly managements expectations are cup or bust right now.

  7. Dallas’ leadership in the locker room is an issue – too many dinosaurs as the leadership core , who play a dump and chase system, and not to develop a youthful dynamic core around robertson heiskanen otter and johnston… but Dallas’ leadership guys are old heads and seems like a young vs old problem in the locker room instead of a single unit of a team. They cannot nor seem to care about winning or getting to that Next level.. some do, but the vets/captains on this team dont have the clutch ability like other captains

  8. If you weren’t in the locker room you really can’t say much about it but what we saw in public showed me Deboer isn’t very impressive

  9. Firing Peter DeBoer is purely dumb. He deserved better. He's a super coach. Getting his team fired up is something a coach does all the time. Dallas controls its division. Colorado, Vegas and Winnipeg have no chance. The Stars are the top dog in that division. Everyone knows it. Why would they fire DeBoer? Makes no sense. If your team is a top four club, you need to keep the coach. Just my view.

  10. Maybe management purposely waited for the other jobs are filled then fire him…not like there aren't coached to hire or anything

  11. Every one says how muon Deboer won. He won nothing yet criticized his players. He should have been fired the minute after that press conference what a loser.

  12. Of course he should be fired if you're a Star's fan. You guys must not have watched his teams in the past. You can't win the Cup. You clowns are overlooking (1) His response to his team on how to handle the Nurse slash, (2) Body language – dropping his head – during any time there was a goal against, (3) The complete lack of checking in the playoffs – look at the hits, (4) The team's inconsistent motivation & effort throughout the playoffs, (5) Putting wrong guys in the line-up – where was Dadonov (7) Misinterpreting Rantanen's hot streak vs. thinking he's now become a new play a making him the focal point of the offense on the fly and logging ridiculous minutes, (8) The unexplainable losing streak – with all the talent they have – to the end of the season (9) Panic move by pulling Otter/Slothinger – and then NOT putting him back in. Why don't you clowns pay attention to the actual games and quit whining about how DeBoer got bad treatment. IMO, he got the treatment he deserved.

  13. Tortorella will probably be the replacement. Whoever it is, it's great timing for them. Seems every guy who gets DeBoers old job wins the cup. See Florida and Vegas.

  14. Lol. Pete De Boer got fired because they lost 4 straight in a non competitive WCF on a 5 year window team. Nill is back to back GM of the year. He knows what he is doing….. Pete knew and said all yr Cup or Bust. He knew what the terms were.

  15. 2:31 "I will torch their next hiring . . . " That's what Jeff O'Neill brings to this panel: a downgrade in objective, intellectual analysis with classless commentary. He's been doing the gig for a while now, so I guess his hoser antics work with Toronto fans. It wouldn't fly with BC media. I am a Toronto fan, but I don't live there or else I'd be trying to get them to hire someone with more dignity than someone who refers to himself as "O-Dog".

  16. The truth is, the team simply doesn't have the playoff quality they need against the Oilers, with J. Benn, Duchene, Seguin, Robertson, etc. They lack speed, tackling ability along the boards, etc. That's why they're simply too weak at 5-on-5 and especially 4-on-4. Pete, as a top coach, has noticed all of this and, with his actions (Jake, Tyler, Jamie, and Jason), has essentially sent a "message" to Jim Nill! And Jim Nill has responded with this "powerful group."

  17. To keep it short and simple, yes. You don’t pull your franchise goalie in the first period of game 7 after letting in two shots/goals. He could have saved face putting him back in to start second. And for the record Deboer is a good coach but maybe his ego got in the way or he simply panicked.

  18. You can't through your goalie under the bus like that and expect to be the coach next year or they have to get rid of the goalie .

  19. They didn't fire him right away because they wanted him to face the music at locker cleanout and have to answer questions, they also wanted to wait till other vacancies we're gone to screw him
