Bruins Name Sturm as Coach, Monahan Wins Masterton, PWHL Vancouver Adds Sarah Nurse

welcome back all right news of the day video for all you fine people on the internet for your Thursday June the 5th uh starting off at the top of the board so yesterday I talked about the National Hockey League and how they’re not intending to make any changes when it comes to uh the salary cap based on local taxes and there’s certainly been that discussion on the channel since then and one thing that was pointed out and so I’ll go ahead and throw this on the board uh Austin Matthews in terms of his actual pay this year 16.7 million US how much is that Canadian um according to current exchange rates and these fluctuate but actually it’s a little bit lower than what it was during most of the season uh 22,816,77.74 that’s not bad in fact his signing bonus Austin Matthews signing bonus 15,925,000 US in Canadian 21,757,247.79 so getting that every July 1st not too shabby and uh yeah so and and this is something that I will be talking about when we get into free agency too because this kind of bonus that Toronto gives out not every team is going to be able to give that out and Toronto can afford to give that bonus to basically any player they choose and what it does is it means that those contracts are then buyout proof but it does mean that the team will get the player that they want right would you rather get paid 10 million upfront or 10 million paid out over a bunch of payments you probably want that up front anyways uh the other point that has been made and we’ve talked about this on the channel over the years is if you look at in Pittsburgh Crosby Malcolm Latang uh they stayed with the Penguins when they could have gone elsewhere to make more money there were players in Boston berseron how many times could Berseron have left Boston and made more money somewhere else marshon uh now he’s out of Boston cuz he wanted more money so Marshon took team friendly deals for quite some time uh Charara took team friendly deals as well at points in his career it’s just it it’s more complicated than just the well we’ll just go and and say this is one thing that we’ll clean up because if you do clean up the whole tax thing then there’s other things you’d have to even out as well and the NHL just figures this is cyclical anyways at least that’s what’s being said at this time um so we’ll see we’ll see with the salary cap going up as I said it may be more of an issue with the cap going up as it is but um at this point in time it’s just one of those issues we will continue to argue and quarrel about uh Marco Sturm has finally been named the head coach of the Boston Bruins so we went through the whole process and weeks after it was reported that Sturm would be the next head coach now he is the next head coach uh Marco Sturm was a good player at the National Hockey League level i’m anxious to see how he does with Boston uh the Boston Bruins I think are going to be in the midst of at least a retool for a year at least uh but we shall see uh what the plan is going forward and see how aggressive they are next month when free agency rolls around uh a feel-good story today uh Shawn Monahan awarded the Bill Masten award and the nice touch about this is as the NHL is finding creative ways to award players uh their trophies uh this one was given to Monahan by Johnny Gudro’s widow Meredith uh so nice touch fantastic really well done the NHL posting this on social media and congratulations just congratulations to Shawn Monahan uh definitely a deserved winner of the Mastered Trophy for dedication to the sport of hockey uh Kaden Lindstöm so Lindstöm missed the entire regular season for Medicine Hat this year he played some playoff games and then in the in the uh Memorial Cup i I don’t think he was 100% at the Memorial Cup and so for Columbus this is I think good news he is going to play for Michigan State 2025 2026 so this upcoming season he’ll be playing for Michigan State and it it definitely you know kicks the can down a road down the road a little bit uh means he’s not signing his entry- level contract as of yet uh but it does mean that Lindstöm gets a chance to play against men and gets a chance to play a full season uh at a higher level than he otherwise likely would have been and uh so all the best to Lindstöm playing for Michigan State who I understand’s pretty good in the NCAA right now when it comes to hockey uh Sergey Castitson there’s a name a blast from the past isn’t it uh he’s announced his retirement from pro hockey he played his last 11 seasons in the KHL at the NHL level played 353 games recorded 67 goals 109 assists for 176 points so Sergey Castitson ends his career played nice long time with the in the KHL and uh all the best to him in retirement uh so from last night’s hockey games uh in the AHL it was Cleovic who scores in double overtime to give Abbottzford the 5 to4 win uh and a 3 to1 series lead the interesting thing with this is Abbottzford wins their game right around the same time as Edmonton won theirs last night so I was very happy to see Abbottzford win right after uh Edmonton gets that thrilling victory so that’s part of the reason I was so over the top last night i just felt like man this is great you know Abbottzford’s up three games to one edmonton wins the game just towards the end of that first overtime absolute thriller uh game five in that AHL series between Abbottzford and Texas is tomorrow uh that is the final game in Texas and then if needed game six would be back in Abbottzford on Sunday uh Tuis Rivier uh they won 3 to2 last night they lead their series against Toledo uh two games to one game four in that series is tomorrow uh so that one of course if you need game six that goes back to Toledo so Tu Rivier is going to try to get the three-game sweep at home and end this uh we’ll see what ends up happening there keep in mind that the Abbottzford series of course is a conference final meaning that Charlotte’s sitting around waiting so if you’re a Charlotte fan you don’t want Abbottzford to win tomorrow you wanted to go the full seven uh whereas in the ECL this is the final so Tu River trying to win the Kelly Cup um so there’s a free concert in Edmonton tomorrow uh before game two uh which will feature the Glorious Suns and Triumph uh this is the most or most Canadian concert I think you can throw uh right before a a a matchup and uh yeah it’ll be in the ice district before game two and it’s free so you can go and listen and apparently this is the first time Triumph is going to have played live um since 2008 so we’ll see how that goes triumph triumph I listened to them back in the 80s i did and uh Lay it on the line is probably a little I think it’s a little bit before my time of listening to music but um I I know they’re going to be playing it apparently they’re playing three different songs so yeah uh we’ll see how that goes but City of Edmonton right now it’s got to be a great party environment and we saw last night the difference between Dry Cidle going into the final kind of beat up and Dry Settle going into the final feeling pretty good so for Florida they’ll be trying to answer that tomorrow and they’ll be doing so after a very Canadian concert is being thrown um in Edmonton so yeah uh we’ll see how all that goes uh PWHL news so both Vancouver and Seattle have been signing players uh they are allowed to sign up to five players before we get into the expansion process on June the 9th um and PWHL Vancouver I wish they had a name um they’ve signed Sarah Nurse to a one-year contract sarah Nurse probably the most visible person in terms of female hockey players maybe outside of Hillary Knight Hillary Knight Marie Phillip Puland Sarah Nurse all in that same same area and uh I think that’s great Sarah Nurse coming to Vancouver for a year that’s excellent uh I know my wife and our daughter they’re planning on going to PWHL games next year so should be fun uh so far Vancouver’s been seemingly prioritizing the the defensive side and I think they’re doing pretty well uh and with the PWHL uh league attendance grew from 483,530 fans the first year to 737,455 fans this past season now with Vancouver and Seattle being added to the mix we may pass a million paid attendees to hockey games next year for the PWHL and the per game average rose from uh 5,689 fans in attendance per game to 7,230 or a rise of 27% so while there are still those who will say nope it’ll never work a women’s hockey league could never work and and there will be those who believe it um it definitely seems like the PWHL’s turning a healthy profit at this point in time at least that seems to be what’s going on if they’re expanding right and uh once we get full visibility of what the salaries are like in the PWHL that’s where things will get interesting i’m sure teams are not spending all the same amount and um some players might be getting some some healthy amounts of money u Sarah Nurse being a good example uh Vancouver um I I think would be wise to you know part with a little bit of money to get to get nurse and so yeah um it’s a one-year contract we’ll see how things go but there’s definitely some excitement in the market when it comes to PWHL and we’ll see how it all turns out should be fun uh let me know your thoughts hit like and subscribe if you haven’t done so already and yeah I’m wearing an Abbottzford jersey cuz they’re up three games to one they could be in the Calder Cup final we could see the Calder Cup award at Abbottzford that would be insane i could be there in person talk to all you fine people on the internet could be great all right that being said if you haven’t already hit like and subscribe please do thank you guys so much for all your support as always i will talk to you again soon

  1. Marco Sturm just suits boston, i always liked him in San Jose and boston, so Boston got a coach and player in the Thornton deal 😂 worth it now? No, still not lol

  2. I don't know who The Glorious Sons and Triumph are. Are they talking about Triumph the Insult Comic Dog? Because if so, I'm interested.

  3. I don't think the PWHL Vancouver team went defensive at all. They got 2 of the most offensive D in the league, got a local rookie who had the 2nd most points by any rook and Sarah Nurse's name speaks for itself if anything I think we're gonna score a ton and I am so here for it 😀

  4. I am surprised that so many people don't realize that you can pressure your politicians to lower taxes. Hell, we Americans have even fought wars over it. Instead if being jealous of cities with more desirable tax rates, perhaps make your city better.

  5. I don’t think playing against late teens early 20s is men like nhl but a step up for 16 year olds

  6. I know the PWHL is only going to NHL markets but I think Halifax would be a perfect fit. It would be the first pro hockey franchise here in over 30 years. I hope at the least a neutral site game comes here.

  7. I think that’s why Monahan got the award, because it’s a “feel good story“ to give it to him and have it delivered and all that. Not that he doesn’t deserve it, but Landeskog deserved it more.

  8. A more cynical approach and you can call Monahan getting the award from Mrs. Gaudrau an exploatation of the whole Gaudreau tragedy, taking advantage of it for maximum exposure while it's still in people's memories.

  9. Short of a disastrous year, Monahan was the obvious front runner for Masterton the moment it became clear how widely the Gaudreaus' deaths had affected the hockey world. He then went and got his second PPG season in his career. There was never a question. It's also appropriate for the books to record this because so much of this season's story was Johnny Hockey who played not a minute in it but whose presence was pervasive.

  10. I think the "Toronto can afford big signing bonuses when other teams can't" isn't really a great argument

The problem isn't that some teams are run well and are successful, it's that some teams get an advantage that others are unable to replicate. It's something out of their hands
