Sharks EXPLORING All Options with Dallas Pick | SJ READY to Make a SPLASH in the Trade Market?

The San Jose Sharks stand at a crossroads with their 30th overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft, facing a decision that could significantly impact the team’s future. JD Young dives into the myriad of possibilities, exploring potential trade scenarios that could reshape the Sharks’ roster. He examines young defensive talents from the New Jersey Devils, such as Simon Nemec and Seamus Casey, while also considering established NHL targets like Samuel Girard from the Colorado Avalanche. The host even touches on the tantalizing, albeit unlikely, prospect of acquiring Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars.

Young doesn’t stop at player trades, however. He meticulously analyzes the option of packaging picks to move up in the draft order. Using Puckpedia’s value chart as a guide, he illustrates how San Jose might potentially climb as high as the 19th overall pick. This strategic maneuvering could dramatically alter the Sharks’ draft position and the caliber of prospect they could potentially select.

The podcast delves into the complex decision-making process facing the Sharks’ management. Young carefully weighs the pros and cons of acquiring immediate help versus long-term assets, taking into account Mike Grier’s past draft strategies. He speculates that the Sharks are more likely to make a bold move rather than simply selecting at their current 30th position. Listeners are invited to tune in for this comprehensive analysis of the Sharks’ draft options and the potential roster-shaping decisions that could influence the team’s trajectory for years to come.

  1. Getting Simon Nemec and putting him with Sam Dickinson as the top pairing D-men, to me would bring the rebuild closer to being complete.

  2. I heard rumblings Nemec was the defense target in the Timo trade and NJ wouldn't budge on him at that time. Has his stock fallen enough to be obtainable?

  3. Use Dallas pick and our own 2026 1st round pick to get number 1 pick. Take Schaefer AND Misa.
McKenna would be nice but it’s not a guarantee that the Sharks would get him. Specially because I think the Sharks will have a Ducks type of jump this year.

  4. OK trading for Girard, but he needs to be long term. Not a 2 year rental. Though I guess they could trade him at end of year 2. Byram is a solid player, but the injury history makes this a bigger gulp.

Still like the idea of trading up with MTL Picks (16 and 17) and including the Carey Price deal, which could help them navigate a potential cap bonus issue, makes sense.

Fiddler does feel like a good fit

The era of GMMG 'manufacturing picks' is going to end in the not too distant future.

  5. I say if we don't get Schaefer I still think we need another defender, so I would love Simon wang late first casue what he has you cant teach and I would feel comfortable taking a guy like that considering how deep our prospect pool is at forward and center. If we do get Schaefer, I would say double dip, get both, cause you can never not have enough good defencemen

  6. Hate to be a buzz kill, but…
Strongly disagree that Girard is worth a 1st. If thats the target i would just re-sign Ferarro.

And the price for Robertson is going to be Eklund and the Dallas 1st. At minimum.
Just grab all the BPA defense you can and see what sticks.

  7. Rumor was Aves were interested in Ferraro at the last trade deadline. Maybe one for one with Girard? Aves get cap relief and Sharks get a player with more offensive upside

  8. I would argue next year is the year to make a trade splash. The consensus value of next years draft is much higher than this year and it puts a greater premium on the draft picks. Take Misa or Schaefer, see who falls into the mid teens.

Packaging the DAL 1st and SJS 2nd makes sense to move up in the draft. Pretty sure there will be guys dropping out of the top 15. I've been a Blake Fiddler fan since the start of the season but I've liked Logan Hensler more. I would like to see Grier go after either but I think Hensler has the better game.

I wouldnt be interested in paying for Girard or Byram. Sharks have their own Girard in the pipe known as Cagnoni, same type of player. And for Byram it's buyer beware, injury history, contract extension and playing with Dahlin pumping his output, could he do it by himself? Just too many red flags for my liking.

  9. Going to be super interesting what MG does with pick 30 & 33 (& 53) if we get Misa at 2 compared to if we get Schaefer at 2.

If we get Misa at 2, then it’s pretty guaranteed MG will move up to get a d-man in the teens/20’s like Aitcheson, Jax Smith, Hensler or Fiddler.
But if we get Schaefer at 2, it lessens the need/desire to move up from 30-33 to get that better d-man.

—> So, if we get Schaefer at 2, does MG still trade up to pick in the teens/20’s? And if yes, does he move up to get his 2nd defenseman in the 1st rd? Or does he move up to get a forward that falls?

I would love a combo of something like Schaefer-Hensler-Ryabkin for our first 3 picks. Or Misa-Fiddler-Brzustewicz. I think we need 2 D and 1 F with the first 3 picks.. no matter what order they come in.

  10. Grier would love to punt 2025 quantity for quality if it’s in 2026. I think he’d take anybody’s 2026 first for the bundle of 30/33/53, even if it’s protected. Trading up from their own pick next year is the thing.
