Throughout his long Career Yzerman had many tough guys to protect him and others. Now, he won't sign anybody to protect his "stars" who have targets on their backs. Brilliant.
They need to draft Brady Martin at 13 he reminds me of a Martin Lapointe type. But with Yzermanberg history he will draft a European that has never been in a fight in his life.

a core is something that has to be earned imo thru consistent success – even if it's just annually making the playoffs. it's something you identify after the fact, or during the fact.
a good example is Chicago – from 07-09 they had Martin Havlat. He was a star forward for them, was age 25-27. He hit free agency after 09. Hawks had a choice to make. They signed Hossa and let Havlat walk. Hossa became a part of their core afterwards. Havlat turned out not to have been part of their core – just as Byfuglien and Brouwer and Versteeg and Brian Campbell and others turned out not to be.
the core reveals itself thru time and thru circumstance.
