I think that matthews should goto UTAH, And they could get like durzi guenther or like picks it's so hard to figure out where he could even fit in not many teams honestly. I feel like utah could use scoring as a 1C I don't think cooley is 1C yet but would make a fine 2C

Rielly is the new Phaneuf who was the new McCabe who was the new Larry Murphy who was the new… well let's just say Leafs fans love scapegoats. Like how they made Jake Gardiner a scapegoat for Game 7 even though that was bogus. Or how Reimer was the scapegoat for Game 7 even though that, too, was bogus.
I think some Leafs fans should relax. Okay, so Rielly is not Cale Makar. But he's not Michael Kostka (remember him?). Leafs fans will soon realize once Rielly retires, that while he wasn't a HOF d-man, he was still solid for what he brought to the table.
MR needs a new start somewhere else, he is wearing out his welcome in TO.
The scouts aren't a counter-argument. The scouts are in addition to the taxes benefit. Listing a second positive doesn't make the first positive a negative. EDM's D core looks pretty effective too though they are tight on cap space with 9 UFAs and 2 RFAs this year as well as 12 UFAs and 2 RFAs next year. They have a triple mortgage on their house and I am not sure the rising cap ceiling will be enough but for this year they are strong. I look at the Hits disparity between EDM and DAL and wonder if FLA has the muscle to hold up if they are the two in the finals.

Shopping Matthew’s is a no go, similar to an Yzerman/Sakic you just have to tough it out till he leads you to victory. Your point about Reilly is fair, he is not the number one guy. The way I see it is this, Toronto needs to start investing young and trading for young guys who have number one guy potential. Bowen Byram is a name on that list, Brandt Clarke as well. Two guys who are rumoured to be on their way out. This is their move going forward, having that one DMAN who is a legitimate Norris contender every year elevates that Toronto defence to elite status imo.

I am a TOR fan and I would take SO many defense with lower cap over Rielly it is not even a point in talking about it.
Rielly is awful at 7.5M no team will take a trade for him unless he is retained.
Our best bet is buy him out and get a real top pair defense.
TOR management has been the worst in NHL for so many years it has gotten WAY past the point of embarrassing!
I would not put all of the blame on Rielly , it was as you said a bad mix that we all knew about for too many years.
I agree with exploring a Matthews trade if the Leafs could get a lesser #1 C and top defenceman back it'd be worth it. Trouble is the that Matthews has a full NMC.
So I've heard elsewhere that the key to the Cup is a strong D-core.
But the logical question is what happens if you don't have a top-5 Norris candidate leading your corps every year? Because if every team had a 70-pt, +30 defenseman, the bar for a Norris trophy would probably be set at 85 pts and a +40 rating.
And let's also be honest–how many top-5 Norris candidates come out of the draft every year? The Bruins felt they had one in McAvoy and probably set the team up this year and the next couple of years with the expectation he'd score 25+ goals.
Morgan Rielly for captain
6:15 Ekblad needs more respect than this man. He has 10 points in 12 playoff games this season and had more points than Jones did in the regular season in fewer games. Hes better than Morgan Rielly at this point in their careers
Leafs are trading Matthews, there is no world where you get good value back. Plus if you trade him and the team gets worse the Toronto fans will actually kill the GM and team owners

Oddly, although I generally like THG, his comments about Toronto & the acquisition of D he is making more simple than reality. Florida had no clue Forsling would be this good as a waiver wire pick up. The bigger question is why did Chicago waive him? Ekblad is a worthless comparison as he was the #1 pick in the 2014 draft by Florida. Anyone with half a brain would have picked a stud RD at #1. Mikkola is an indictment of another team. St. Louis drafts him, but trades him to the NYR with Tarasenko. He is signed as a UFA by Zito. What did Doug Armstrong not see with this guy?
Kulikov is amusing as Florida drafted him, gave up on him & he bounced around the NHL for years before Zito deemed him worthy of a return. Schmidt & Balinskis were both undrafted, but obviously Florida's pro scouts saw value in them. Schmidt's played with 4 other NHL teams over his decent career, but he's never been more than a 3rd pairing guy for the most part. Seth Jones is another no brainer. A top drawer RD he was traded to Chicago by Columbus & signed a big 8 x 9.5M deal with the Blackhawks. After 4 years of losing he requested a trade. Florida, with Ekblad suspended & Tkachuk conveniently on LTIR, had the room to take him on with Chicago retaining 2.5M aav. Sometimes you have to be good to be lucky & lucky to be good. I will admit Zito is unafraid to move on from guys & roll the dice on other guys. It's paid off so far with most of his moves.
A short note to THG, Matthews has a full 'no move', so unless he decides he wants a change of scenery, he's not a trade option as you proposed & neither are Rielly or Nylander. No one ever claimed Rielly was a number one D ever. Burke claimed he was the best D available in the 2012 draft & got him at #5. He told anyone who would listen he would've taken him at #1 had he had the 1st pick.
I disagree, Shannon. Morgan Reilly is NOT A #2 defenseman. I always liked his game BEFORE HE SIGNED HIS LAST CONTRACT. Since that time I feel his game has dropped a ‘notch’. This last year he was NOT SLATED IN THE TOP 2. He seems to have similar demons as Mitch Marner, GLARING ERRORS at critical times in the playoffs. He still does some good things but like some of the other ‘stars’ on the leafs, he is OVERPAID FOR WHAT HE IS just to be coaxed to play in Toronto. MLSE has mismanaged the roster since they caved in to Nylander several years ago. I feel like the leafs are a more ‘expensive’ version of the Buffalo Sabres. Not a desirable destination UNLESS THE MONEY IS THERE.

I think it would be really interesting to see Toronto, NJD and VAN do a 3 way. Q Hughes to NJD, Hamilton to TOR, Reilly to VAN. Obviously other pieces involved, but i think NJD would pay a premium to get the third Hughes, VAN would prefer something for Quinn rather than walk for free, and Hamilton probably would like to be a #1 d man offensively and leave the D to others. Now there are a number of NMCs that means any player could nix it, only player i could see doing so is Morgan.
Let's be honest the no income tax states such as Florida have a massive advantage. Other cities have to compete for example by paying much more than a team like the Panthers. Teams like Florida and Tampa etc etc will always get what looks like bargains and be able to fill out their roster with depth because other NHL teams have to pay more just to get to the same take home for said player. The NHL really needs to step in and regulate this as it gives teams a rather large advantage.
It’s not solely the D that play deference lol forwards who are capable of playing two way hockey can make the d look better. This all goes back to nylander and Mathews and marner not being good defensively lol then it’s a trickle effect with other forwards not playing good two way hockey. There’s a big gap between the blue line and forwards.
Calgary, like Winnipeg had to go thru Edmonton to advance, tough ask and those teams were really good imo……..

I agree with you, tavares has been the anchor that has crippled the Leafs chances at winning (include rielly too). Can you imagine what $18.5M could get in today's NHL? 1 decent d-man and 2 decent forwards (i.e. imagine verhage, bennett, and forsling as Leafs in place of rielly and tavares… Cup winners for sure)!
A lot of casual fans in this comment section and people that don't watch leafs games. The scapegoat argument is a lazy strawman, you missed the point entirely Shannon. Its not about him no longer being a #1, he has a 7.5M cap hit and is worse defensively than their 6th Dman Benoit (1.3M) without providing nearly enough offense. For years we've seen the revolving door of D partners for Rielly and it has never worked. If your 7.5M Dman can only play with Luke Schenn then who's at fault? Rielly was the worst player on the ice in game 7 by a country mile, the next worst was his partner Carlo. He's also been terrible in the regular season, just not the playoffs, including on the powerplay. It got to the point where Berube had to take him off PP1 so he could run 5 forwards with Marner quarterbacking.
Toronto always hype their picks, Sandin, Liljegren, Robertsson, you name it. Almost like they force them into the line up. Maybe their overall scouting is so much worse than fx Tampa and Florida?🤓
