BREAKING NEWS: Dallas Stars Fire Head Coach Pete DeBoer – Why Now & Who Replaces Him?

On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, Joey Erickson reacts to the news that the Dallas Stars have fired Head Coach Pete DeBoer. DeBoer had one year left on his contract. After a controversial pulling of Jake Oettinger in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final, DeBoer was on the hot seat and his comments following the game played a major part in this decision. Joey shares why he believes this decision was made by GM Jim Nill, what does it mean for the Stars moving forward, and potential candidates to replace him for next season.

  1. Good- now hire Woodcroft! Now Pete gets to collect $4.25M to sit home for year and has rendered himself unrecylable any longer.

  2. The 2 questions I had after that end of game press conference by DeBoer were this: 1) He said he was trying to put a spark in the players with the goalie change. The Stars were in an elimination game. Why weren't they "sparked" at the opening face-off? 2). He said Oettinger had a bad record against Edmonton in the playoffs. Then why did he start the game if DeBoer had no faith in him?

  3. The otter pull. His actions during the game. The Dadonov scratch. His comments. I mean if you’re rattled? I get it. But don’t let them see you’re rattled.

  4. What about Jere Lehtinen? He was wanting to coach us last go around when they were hiring. That could be cool. Stars legend. Finnish. Fresh. Why not?

  5. You just don’t throw your goalie under the bus — simple as that. In the playoffs, you live and die with your goalie. Pulling the goalie is often less about performance and more about waking up the team. Hopefully the new playing style actually fits the speed of Heiskanen and Hintz better than that rigid blue-line-to-blue-line approach.

  6. They better not be done. Just because you have a new coach preaching toughness and grit; you actually need to have the roster that can execute those orders. The era in the NHL that exists now, does not reward finesse teams. We need to change this roster starting with the captain. We are way too easy to play against when it counts in the playoffs. We need to start making opponents hate to play us.

  7. I still think giving up stank wasn’t a good move. Dude one like 1 of three of our guys that would absolutely badger and fight every time he was on the ice. We missed that all post season

  8. It’s not the coach it’s the players. Vegas, then Edmonton twice just had better players than Dallas the last 3 years, no new players then same ol outcome, Edmonton made Dallas look small and slow

  9. The Dallas Stars the last three postseasons have made it to conference finals, a very difficult feat to accomplish, but have struggled to score in conference finals, losing each of them. DeBoer no doubt is DeNoMore lol, but problems remain with the roster. The Dallas Stars should’ve already made at least one Stanley Cup final appearance, but haven’t. Maybe changing head coach will help but only time will tell if that does happen.

  10. I don’t think it was just Jake Oettinger he threw under the bus but his own players by saying they were the “best on paper” but not the “ best team on the ice.” It seems to me that he really didn’t 100 percent believe that the team could make it to the Stanley Cup final much less get past the Edmonton Oilers. I hope Jim Nill doesn’t stop at the head coach the team needs to be revamped as well. Some of these older players are going to be released. They need to get younger, bigger, faster players across the board. They can’t win on finesse they must play more physical and a tougher brand of hockey 🏒. Edmonton is the standard of play the next HC should chase whoever gets the job.

  11. I know this is off topic but look what the Detroit Lions did. Hired a guy who played the game, was an interim head coach for a team that fired their coach in the middle of the season. He’s a new coach and his team has his identity and intensity. He has the reputation now of being a gambler and sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t. Since he’s been head coach of the Lions, they are top 5 in win percentage. A lot closer to the Lombardi trophy than they were before he got there. And really you look across the NFL and there’s first time and young head coaches everywhere. These young coaches resonates with the players better. And these coaches are so creative now. So the Stars going young and upcoming could bring out some untapped potential for players like Wyatt Johnston.

  12. I am pissed. Name me one coach that will take you to the playoffs next year?!! They could have worked things out. So your goalie's voice runs the team? Otter's performance sucks against the Oilers and the team had very little heart in that series. The heart of the team was traded to Carolina. Granlund was the only one that actually performed at a higher level during that series. Jamie Benn didn't perform at all during the playoffs. Robertson didn't perform, Duchesne had a lackluster playoff performance, Mikko had a great series against his former team but you know Edmonton was a better team.

  13. I believe the owners group and Nill must have looked at each other after that atrocious press sequence by first DeBoer and then Öttinger after who took such treatment on the chin like a southern gentleman with a shrug. As a Pred, my opponents in the south must have realized the obvious.
Texans have honour. This was unacceptable treatment of one of your own, let alone a franchise anchor player. Inevitable that Nill had to let DeBoer go

  14. This is good for Otter… sometimes a goalie doesn't really grow up until he gets his coach fired (after underachieving in 3 straight conference finals in net). Now he must man up.
