Another Late Collapse for the New York Islanders But This One Wasn’t a Surprise

The New York Islanders blew a 3-1 lead to the New Jersey Devils in the last 4 and a half minutes of regulation time and lost in OT 4-3. We break down another late Isles collapse and what went wrong. We also discuss why this one doesn’t quite hurt as much as some of the others.

We also discuss a great honor for Brent Sutter and some bad news on the injury front for Mike Reilly, although the Isles do have an available replacement.

Plus, we answer your mailbag questions and a lot more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. NO Fkn LEAD SAFE WITH ISLES. I have never seen a team blow leads consistently like isles do. Just pathetic. WELL DESERVED LOSER POINT. SAME OLD SCRIPT. Can't hold 3-1 3-2 third period lead give up late goal and this time lose in ot. pk gives up yet another goal. It seems the same shit continues under roy. Lame-0, roy it doesn't matter. pk and blown leads isn't a coaching problem. Nor is the injury excuse. Shouldn't happen with 30 in net. This is a roster problem. Louzer needs to dig deep to figure that one out and why weak pk/blown leads continue. And funny thing is lame-0 is a laff ass'st coach now in charge of pk.
Isles will leave at least a dozen points behind the door once again thanks to failure to secure leads. That may cost isles a playoff spot this time around. And nj is improved and playoff caliber. Caps are improved as well. So who do isles take out to get into playoffs? rags, fla, canes, laffs-doubtful b's struggling, tb not ready to go away. Louzer should be glad wings sabres can't improve their rosters as well and continue to look up at playoffs.
GOTTA LOVE THAT ISLE DEFENSE WHEN LEADING IN THIRD PERIOD. It's called the hand grenade defense. Isles are so removed from the trotz shut it down days. This core either forgot how to do that or are too fkn lazy-no will to do that anymore. The same old roster just getting stale-needs an influx of hungry fresh youth.
And 21 was a valuable isle thru the dynasty and the transition years. At least bow tie knew when to move 21 for assets including dual deals with 16 trade that got isles much needed scoring help in s thomas who formed a nice top line with sneaky pete/d king after acquisitions. Louzer can only wish he had that when/how to trade touch. 29 should ring that bell for louzer, same type of situation as playoff contenders look for 2 c help..

  2. Okay so they blow another lead with new players and no matter who they put on the ice over the last few years they continue to blow leads. So you would have to say its the system they are playing, and as you have said before the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Same with the penalty kill same thing over and over same result. Ownership its time for a change!!!!!!

  3. Why is Engvall even in the NHL, can anyone explain , bring in the Future, it’s obvious that the past is not working, young youthful players, they had the game Won and lost, but if you look the oilers aren’t playing much better or worse, go figure ? Thank you Gil great job !!!!

  4. Gil, I agree 100%. This wasn't the same old collapse. This group shouldn't have been competitive with 5 starters out of the lineup, but they were. They should be proud of the point they earned. What really cost them was fatigue in 4 of the defensemen, who have been logging huge minutes because Cholowski and Hutton aren't NHL material.

  5. Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? Before I begin, I want to 🎊 to Brent Sutter on making the Islander Hall of Fame, and that means his #21 will be hanging in the rafters. Now back to business at hand, every time the Islanders take 2 steps forward, they end up taking 1 step back. Patrick Roy was uncomfortable with Dennis Chulowski, but he scored the tying goal. Hero, Simon Holmstrom for the one goal and 1 assist. 🐐, Noah Dobson -2 1 shot on goal. Ilya Sorokin was solid in goal. Those loser points may bite them in the tail if they're still in playoff contention. Bad news for the Islanders. Mike Reilly will be out for an indefinite period of ⏲️. Isiah George is still playing well. I still hope thru don't send that kid back to Bridgeport. Now, getting back to Brent Sutter, the ceremony isn't until January 18th against San Jose. I hope to 👀 his brother's number in the rafters right next to his someday. I also hope the current Islanders don't ruin it for them by losing. They better get it together, especially all those teams at 500 or better. HAPPY 🎂, MICHEL BERGERON. I do remember 👀 as a coach of the then Quebec Nordiques, who got the broom taken to them by the Islanders in 1982. If they're not in playoff contention, that would be a good time for Lou Lamoriello to start retooling. Hear from you later, Gil, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

  6. Let me be the first to channel Jim Mora "Playoffs! You want to talk about Playoffs?!!!! Playoffs!" Sorry had to do it. They're competing more than I thought they would. I can tell you that! Am I happy………..ah not really.

  7. Good morning team! Gil, another disappointing loss after having a lead in the 3rd. The PK gave up a goal, and playing against the empty net hurt us as well. With a depleted team, I was happy to get the loser point, against a Devil's team that has it going on right now. This one didn't hurt as much as most losses. When we get a few injured players back, maybe we can hope for a better showing. Glad to see the players that are playing right now, for giving it their all. Reilly gets hit with the injury bug. Please, stop the bleeding! I agree, Holmstrom as hero of the game. Thanks again, Gil. Looking forward to the next episode. Everyone, have a great day! Happy Veterans Day! See you all again tomorrow. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  8. Just an unlucky goal with the goalie pulled. I actually though Hutton was in good position. I don' t think there was a defensive breakdown, just on the wrong side of puck luck again but if this team can hang until they can get some players back it could be character building which could help later in the year. Isiah George had me out of my seat in O/T. How nice would that have been?

  9. To me this is the same old problem, or one of them, rearing it's ugly head again….3rd period collapses….bad teams do the things the new York islanders do

  10. Another blown lead, I don't get why they can't shut it down with a lead, that Isaiah George kid is a keeper, I hope they keep him in the line up

  11. Hi Gil! Don’t know what to say—-They’re trying and honestly don’t have major talent but they are trying. It just feels like “We are waiting” for our full team to come back. That “Full team”got blanked 2 out of the first 4!! These blown leads are mental. There is no other explanation. When ya get rid of the usual culprits out there—-then things will change. Gil—I know it wont happen but until this guy is gone, it won’t change. We are stuck in limbo with this guy but I would be just fine trading Palmeri, Nelson and JG and brining up the kids. I want to see the kids!! Enough with this ridiculous “Win now” crap!! I’ll say it till I’m blue in the face—-if ya can break up the Dynasty teams, I just don’t understand the misguided loyalty here. Take care Gil!!

  12. Though disappointed to have let the lead slip, they earned a well-deserved point, proving their grit even under difficult circumstances. LGI

  13. Patty Lafontaine should absolutely be in the Islanders HOF. I mean seriously he was a rock star for us.
