The Gomez-McDonagh Trade – Buyer’s Remorse

On June 30th 2009, the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens exchanged 7 different players. The Rangers would receive a 12th overall pick from two years prior and a 30-40P forward, whilst the Habs would pick up a 2-time Stanley Cup Champion, a 3-time All Star and one of the league’s top playmakers. However, one team wouldn’t quite get what they paid for…

Here’s how the Scott Gomez-Ryan McDonagh trade gave the Montreal Canadiens all the buyer’s remorse!

  1. Imagine McDonagh on a line with Subban! 😫

WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN US BOB GAINEY?!

(Don't take this too seriously. Lol)

  2. Another one to do would be the Alexei Yashin trade for, among others, Zdeno Chara and the draft pick that became Jason Spezza. Yes, in the late 1990s, the Islanders had Chara, who, after this season, will likely be the only player who played in the 1990s still playing next season.

  3. Was looking forward to this video, it still haunts me till this day. I wonder how the Habs would have been if Gainey traded Price, Pacioretty and Subban for Lecavalier

  4. If you factor in asset management, this trade looks a lot worse for the Habs. The biggest mistake the Habs made was not flipping Gomez when he still had some value left prior to buying him out. In contrast, when the Rangers started blowing up their roster and began trading their best players for future picks, McDonagh (alongside JT Miller) fetched a pretty good return from the Lightning (Namestikov, who was flipped for a prospect and future pick, Howden, Hajek, and two picks that became Nils Lundkvist and Karl Hendriksson). While neither team won the Cup (although the Rangers came VERY close in 2014 with McDonagh in the lineup), the Rangers at least managed to get something in return to build for their future, while the Habs are still looking for their top line center till this day (Kotkaniemi may be that 1C in future, but as of 2020, he does not look ready yet to play a top 6 role).

  5. As much as I hate this trade for Montreal you got to remember that they brought in Gomez so they could sign Gionta as they both played together with the devils. Gomez was a factor in Gionta's decision of signing with the Habs.

  6. As a Montreal fan, writing this even before the video starts… I couldn't believe we traded Higgins… he was a fan favorite. Also Scott Gomez was a SUPER nice guy. I met him twice… honestly one of the nicest players I've ever met… He was without a doubt the most over priced player I've ever seen.

EVERYONE knew at the time that Gomez was overpaid and on his decline. Bob Gainey (GM) was hedging on Gomez still having a few years left in him. Gainey was always chasing old players who were past their prime…. it ruined the Canadiens for years and years.
