Interesting that the ankle overlay is only on one side. Im inclined to think extra protection from an old injury, but leather isn't going to do a whole lot for impact protection. Since he's a righty and it is the lefty skate I wonder if its for abrasion resistance when he turns that leg in on draws.
you didn't mention that he also apparently prefers the older toe cap over the newer lower profile asymmetrical toe cap. which is interesting
